It saddens me to write this as Dags has been a family favorite for years. But, in recent years, the subs have gotten smaller and smaller. The Italian in particular used to be stuffed with meat and toppings, and now they're half the size with just a few slices of deli meat. This has been consistent the past several times I've been. Went to get a snack of a arancini meatball at 1 pm. I Asked them to heat it up , 30 mins later I walked out the door , 6 men making sandwiches not kids, hectic behind the counter . First u need a number and wait . That's ok . The sandwiches u order, the cashier rings it up . How about sticker with bar code to ring up . the cashier is clueless and very rude . , the customer tells the cashier their sandwich order , wow, so bad for inventory . Never going here again . The service is consistently rude and inattentive, and the food at the deli counter is often not fresh (we've even had to throw away items immediately after purchasing). The counter staff seem intent on making a point - demanding your order the moment you arrive, and if you politely ask for more time, they then completely ignore you, leaving you to repeatedly ask for assistance. I hired D'Agostino's to cater a graduation party recently , the food was delivered hot and was so delicious everyone was asking where it was from . I'm Italian and give the meatballs 2 thumbs up! Allergy alert: went in for lunch today and had a horrible interaction with two of the guys behind the counter. Bought $15 of groceries (packaged, so the food had ingredient lists) and as I was checking out, asked if they had ingredient lists for the bread they use for sandwiches. I explained i have a soy allergy. The flippant response I received was that they don't have ingredients but there's no soy in bread (which is completely untrue, as about 90% of store bought bread has soybean oil or soy lecithin). I picked up a bag of sub rolls next to the register and said, "There soy in this bread right here that you're selling." Both guys said nothing, blew me off, and walked away. Word to the wise: restaurants are now getting sued all over the country for sending people into anaphylactic shock. Do not say someone is safe to eat something if you are unsure. D'ags isn't just a long strip of deli counter behind a tiny storefront, it's much more than that. Damn do they know what they're doing. Their Boar's Head cold cuts are so unbelievably fresh and delicious, and their subs are a true hallmark of this small town. Naturally, they're a bit more expensive than Stop & Shop, but it's completely worth it. They have a huge customer base that helps them fly through their stock so everything's guaranteed to be fresh all the time. D'ags is the epitome of childhood in Winchester, and I think everyone from here would agree. Screw the BK Lounge, I would rush over to D'ags on half days to get my favorite Italian sub with everything, extra hots, and a bag of Cape Cod chips on the side. And I still get excited when my Ma throws me a $20 to go pick up lunch for the fam. The service is as great as the food. I might not know any of their names, and they might not know mine, but everytime I go in there they seem to recognize me and ask how my parents, etc. are doing. The only reason I can't give my beloved D'ags 5 stars is because I'm not crazy about their sub rolls. I wish they were a bit, um, crustier? Is that the word? Even though I live in DC now, whenever I'm home I make it a point to stop by and see Ralph or make sure my mom has some fresh cold cuts at home. The service and operation at this place are spectacular even when it is mobbed during lunch and on the weekends. What makes Dags is the Boars Head cold cuts and the bread from Piantedosi. If you are looking for something hot, while you won't find a ton of hot items on the menu (mostly cold subs), the meatballs are unreal. Very disappointing! Sandwich wasn't prepared the way it was ordered, even though it was written down on the slip attached to the order. When I called all I got was a half- hearted apology.
