You just can't beat the 55th & Madison Hot Dog Cart for several reasons. The primary reason is that the hot dogs are grilled, not boiled and pulled out of questionable water. And the quality of the hot dogs is outstanding. Crisp, beefy, flavor, good size (actually extends out beyond the perimeter of the bun), just great taste! They have sausages / bratwurst (I think) as well. But the addition to the hot dog that I chose was the potato knish. Also outstanding. Great potato flavor, great crust, they even cut it open a little and added mustard, without compromising the structure of the square. They moved to the south side of 55th just off the southeast corner (they used to be on the northeast corner) since the last time I was here. Not only are the hot dogs grilled (which is hard to find in NY amongst the many many street vendors), but the couple who operate this cart are just lovely, wonderful people. I enjoy giving my business to them because they work hard, offer a great set of products, with excellent service, and a warm, welcoming attitude. I would seek them out because they really do stand well above your run of the mill corner hot dog cart. It is totally worth it to me to specifically come here for your New York hot dog fix. I cannot believe I actually found the hot dog cart I ate at while in NYC on Yelp! It was an exceptionally cold day and I had been craving a hot dog. (I will only eat a hot dog while in NYC from a vendor. Nowhere else.) So, I ordered a hot dog with lots of mustard and a knish. The guy serving me was on the phone the whole time but that was okay. All I cared about was the food. I received my hot dog and knish nice and hot. This seems to be a foreign concept where I come from, which is the Ft. Lauderdale area. The hot dog and knish were delicious, great flavor on both. But above all, I have to give the vendor props for serving food that is hot when it was about 35 degrees outside. It stayed hot too!! I will never understand why Florida restaurants struggle to serve hot food when NYC vendors can serve food that stays hot even in frigid weather. Go NYC!!!! read more

Overall **** I can't believe I'm writing a review about a Hot Dog Cart! My son wanted a Hot Dog and Schnippers was out of them, if not for Yelp I never would have found it this hidden gem. Setting *** It is a hot dog cart and a pretty nondescript one at that, without the picture on Yelp I wouldn't be able to pick it out from any other cart. It is set on a busy corner with nowhere to eat but if you walk half a block East away from the cart there is a large area with tables in front of a building you can sit at. Service **** An older man and woman run it and they where warm and very friendly. Food **** As far as street dogs go I have to agree with others that these win hands down. They are much bigger than the usual and are cooked on a griddle compared to sitting in hot water so they have much more flavor. I prefer mine a little crispier but I think I got there a little too early. I bet if they would warm the buns open face on the griddle that the whole experience might be even better. Value **** $3 for a hot dog seems a little steep but they are good. All in, two dogs and two large drinks $9. Surprisingly they do not appear to sell any add ons such as chips. read more

The same proprietor has worked this location for at least ten years and has established a faithful following that brings people crawling from their fluorescent-glowed cubbies and caves to brave the mean streets of midtown for the culinary delight that is a new york hot dog. The usual toppings are made available for those that do not understand what it is that makes a hot dog the perfect food. Its the dog and the bun. Mustard if it suits you, but all that other crap is just for the cheapies that want more stuffing in their belly for their money. Go with the straight dog. It will never let you down. Nicely fried, served up in a squishy white bread bun (not mine, I swear), and wrapped in good old fashioned aluminum foil. Last time I was there, the guy was looking kinda old so hurry up and get there before.... well, frankly, its too late. Yeah, I dropped that pun. Frankly, it is the best dog in town. Midtown's finest hot dogs by far are being served up on the northeast corner of 55th and Madison. Sure I could go to one of the 3 hot dog carts right outside my office, but it's worth a walk across the avenues for these pups. As noted in the other reviews, the main distinction is that these dogs are grilled, not like the rubbery boiled dog most carts are serving up. If you're a relish man, there's is top notch. And they wrap your dogs up for you ever so nicely in tinfoil and slip them into a paper sac. The couple (I'm assuming they're married) who run the cart are adorable and also work fast and furious like a well-oiled hot dog machine. Best 2 buck lunch in midtown for sure. read more

Now, on the recommendation of two gentlemen (easy on the snickering there) with the propensity to eat often and well, how can you go wrong? You can't! What an awesome hot dog. i haven't had a hot dog from a street cart in years and with good reason it's dirty dogs in dirty water and the carts are stored on the west side in a warehouse with rats and homeless folks roaming around but i had such a strange strong craving for a hot dog while walking on madison ave and 55th st . i took a gamble and the dogs are on a griddle not in some luke warm dirty water so it's seems like a safe bet . i will get 4 hot dogs with mustard , sauerkraut and onions and i will also get 4 knishes with mustard and make my way back to work and see how my slacker workers will chow on free hot dog cart food like animals . i did also get 2 pretzels but the salt made them a bit dry. nice folks who run this cart and they do really good business and i bet the city charges them some pricey sidewalk rental fee . i had a dog with the works , i had 2 knishes and i did not get food poisoning which is a bonus . thanks for the memories via new york city style . read more

Used to work at 425 Park Avenue (for 10 years) and found this place back in 2003 and have been going here since. I now work at 45th and 3rd Avenue and walk the distance when in the mood for hot dogs. All the reviews are correct. This place is on the Northeast corner of Madison and 55th. The pictures displayed are not the correct cart. It appears as if someone removed the original ones. The owners of this cart are a very nice married couple. read more
