I have really oily skin and recently ran out of my prescription acne medication and needed an acne facial. Being from south Philly, I didn't feel like driving to center city and dealing with parking. I got the Yelp deal online which was $40 for $80 worth services. The waiting area was very calm, quiet, and relaxing- which was a really nice contrast from walking in off of Broad Street. My esthetician, Stephanie, came out and told me it would be a few more minutes because she was waiting for her client to leave and needed to clean the room. She was so sweet and I told her it was no problem. I was so lucky to have gotten Stephanie. She told me her specialty was acne and problem skin, which made me feel so much better. She was so knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. When we weren't talking about my facial, Stephanie asked me questions about myself and told me about herself as well. She is so genuinely nice and I really enjoyed talking to her during my facial. I usually don't like to talk during spa treatments because I try to relax but I couldn't stop talking to her- she was so personable! I told Stephanie how I ran out of my acne medication and asked her for some tips because I felt like I needed a new skin care regimen. She gave me a couple recommendations for face washes and moisturizing serums, organic make up brands that would work well for my oily skin, and acne spot treatments. She wrote all of that down for me, gave me 2 samples of the serums and gave me her card. Stephanie told me to call Hot Hands if I ever had any questions about taking care of my skin. That really went above and beyond for me. I've had a lot of facials at the spas in center city (Toppers, Body Klinic, etc.) and never had anyone take such concern in their client. She didn't try to sell my anything, which I really appreciated, and gave me a coupon for $20 off for my next visit. I've been following the skin care regimen Stephanie made for me and my face looks great. I haven't even gotten a new acne prescription because the products she suggested have been working so well. If you get a facial, especially if you have oily/acne prone skin like me, you NEED to go to Stephanie. I can't say enough about her! read more

DO NOT GET A FACIAL HERE. Unfortunately I purchased the groupon for the facial and the massage. The massage was good/average. The facial on the other hand was awkward and nothing I dont do regularly in my own home. I know there might be a few estheticians that work there, this one specifically was NOT good, curly blonde hair, latino accent, said she was new. I should start off saying that I have had quite a few facials and this by far the worst. She used a weird smelly black light mask to tell me that I had sun damage (no shit I grew up on a beach and i'm fair) and combination skin, which I could have told her if she asked. She proceeded to condescendingly tell me how i should be taking care of my skin, without listening to my actual routine. I told her i was excited to try the dermalogica skincare products (this is what they use and sell) She responded that she was new and that she would not be using them on me, ok thanks.. Then she proceeded to take my makeup off with some sort of a sponge that she kept reusing on my face washing and ringing out in the sink behind me - GROSS! She gave me an enzyme mask and a clay mask, both of which she left on my face for a lengthy amount of time. I probably sat with the clay mask on my face for 20 minutes while she clanged things behind me, washed some things and rustled through papers. During this time she should have been massaging me, i barely got a massage at the end, and it sucked. Her fingers literally felt like sandpaper. She didnt give me any steam and she did no extractions, no aromatherapy. Bottom line I dont know why anyone would pay $40-$60 for a facial from this woman/place, I give myself an enzyme peel and a clay mask once a week myself and I feel more relaxed less degrated in my own home. OHHH and to top it off - I needed change to tip this woman, because its the right thing to do.. i needed to break a $100. In front of the whole lobby the owner goes "well how much do you wan to tip her?" Not cool. He needed to know this because he never went to the bank (said he forgot) so hes pulling money from other tip envelopes and his wallet to get me change. It was so wrong and so unprofessional. I will not be coming back here, there are plenty of other good places to get facials in philadelphia - THE JEAN MADELINE INSTITUTE is fabulous and cheap, much cheaper than what i spent on this disappointing groupon. read more

Not sure where to begin. The overall feeling is the place is run down so is the staff. They ask you in the beginning if you need to use the restroom, very polite. It has to be the smallest bathroom ever. I got a massage, in a very dirty small room, that had pour central air. I asked to have medium pressure. In return I was basically covered in oil, and just had someone rub oil on me, with no skill, or training. When she was done, she didn't ask me how it was or say good bye, she just left with her purse. I then waited in what looks like a break room for the staff, for my facial. I was brought into another room, and the facialist turned the light up so I could see walking in. When she turned the light up, all I could see was another dirty room. The work station looks like a old wooden dresser, what some animal has chewed the left top corner of. When she began the facial it felt nice. When she brought out the steamer, it seemed it was time for her to take a break, she actually got up and left for about 4 minutes. She then came back applied a mint mask and then left for about 5 minutes and took another break. She came back washed my face and applied lotion. Atleast she said have a nice day. When I went into the bathroom to fix my hair, I noticed I still had part of the mint mask under my eye. I actually left stressed and not relaxed. Word to the wise, save your money read more

Just got home from our couples massage, which was overall a 3.5-4 star experience. PROS: Location. Hot Hands is a half a dozen blocks from our house and we (mostly) enjoyed the walk to and from (lots of people watching along the way!) Price. We were able to snag a deal on Groupon for a 60 Minute Couples' Massage for $95.20 (Regularly $119 with a Groupon Sale we took advantage of). Definitely the deal of the century! Staff (booking). Everyone was very friendly and personable. I had a bit of trouble initially making an appointment (mostly due to our hectic schedules) but Damien was accommodating and polite during our official scheduling. I also got a call the day before confirming my appointment which was great (based on reviews I wasn't sure what to expect). Masseurs. Steven was great and my husband enjoyed Adriana, too. Both were friendly, professional, and gave us a relaxing experience :) CONS: Lotion vs. Oil. I've had a lot of massages in my day (several per year) and I've grown accustom to liking the way my skin feels after a soothing scented, warm oil is ground into it for an hour. Unfortunately, this seemed to be more of a lotion and (for me at least) disappointingly scentless. I understand that most people are into that, but the scent helps to get me into my happy place so having the option would be nice. Towels. Unfortunately the towels used left a lot to be desired--especially the one for your face. It was very stiff and rough and felt sort of "cheap" to the touch. The hot ones applied during the massage were not any better. I think I just associate massages with moist heat so perhaps I'm being picky. Music. This wasn't exactly a con but the music in the room wasn't quite "zen" enough. A song or two were popular Italian ballads with a little too much climax. The nature sounds were a nice addition but I would have personally preferred that the actual music be more "meditative" (as in wooden flute type stuff). OVERALL: The visit as a whole was very enjoyable. I think my husband and I both prefer to have more of a "bodywork" type visit (where knots are forced out of our bodies by any means necessary) than this type of massage (which was a lot of circular rubbing) but ultimately it was a good value. Had a discount voucher for a Swedish massage. My initial appointment was cancelled by the spa a mere 20 minutes before my appointment (I was already on my way!), which really ticked me off. However, they did upgrade me to hot stone massage to make up for the gaff after I complained. My second appointment went better, though the girl at the desk said they failed to add time for the hot stones to my service, and had to tell the therapist just before my appointment. My service was nice, though the "spa" atmosphere itself is way less than zen! The lobby was noisy with TV and a customer talking on her cell phone - on speaker. The room was comfortable but I could hear people talking outside the door for parts of my service, which made it difficult to fully relax. Overall a good deal at a discount, but I won't be back at full price, or even member prices. read more

Bought a groupon by recommendation of a friend. Got the 1 hour facial and 1 hour massage. The facial: Was overall amazing. I got pretty chilly at one point but the aesthetician noticed I was fidgety and asked if I was doing ok. She then got me another blanket and went back to work. I was so relaxed that I fell asleep on the table. It was wonderful and I felt amazing afterward! Only complaint was that the music system wasn't working properly and so it was hard to relax initially. Sounded funny with too much bass and was warped. Also a few times I could hear people talking outside of the room and that distracted me a bit. Once she got to work, though, I forgot all about it. After the facial I was shown to a waiting room and offered water and hot tea while I waited for my massage. Glad to get the tea offer because I was in a robe and slippers and chilly. After about 5 minutes I was escorted into another room for my massage. I was asked pressure preference and if I had any areas to be focused on or avoided. The massage was amazing. I prefer a firm/deep pressure and that's exactly what I got. Same issue with the music in here but overall I was very happy with my experience and would return in a heartbeat! I came a bit early so I could find a parking space and got to hear the receptionist being very rude to a customer on the phone who finally hung up on her. Damien, the owner, came out to introduce himself, but sadly I didn't get him for a massage because he was going out to shovel. I am a dancer and veteran of many massages and a lot of physical therapy and shiatsu, so I know how to ask for what I want. The woman who worked on me asked a few perfunctory questions and set to work. She asked if her pressure was ok and I said yes but it was too fast--could she slow down? She did, briefly, and then went back to her quick pace, scrubbing rather than massaging me. When she was finished, (on a timer?) she abruptly said, "ok you're done, you can get dressed--see you outside." Whew. And after that I had to drive home in the slush! I had seen this spa advertised for years, but was hesitant to try it 1) because of the location (Broad Street at Oregon Avenue is not a neighborhood where you'd expect to find high-quality massages or skincare) and 2) because they always seem to be running specials on Groupon (for me, that is frequently a red flag that a company might be having a hard time keeping customers). The lure of the Groupon special finally got the best of me, and I booked a massage. I had such a great experience that I decided to try their waxing services, which are also top notch. I immediately became a member, which gets you access to free and half-price services. I absolutely love the spa. The staff are wonderful - always super friendly and helpful. I have no idea why other reviewers have had negative things to say about the decor; it's comfortable and inviting, and completely clean. It might not be totally modern, but it's an old building in South Philly - you can't expect anything too shiny. I don't know why others have had such a hard time booking appointments, either. The spa is open late in the evening, and on Sundays. You might have to book a week or two out, but that's not unreasonable. I also love the location. It's a block away from the Broad Street subway, and near several major bus lines. I would not hesitate to recommend this spa for a massage, wax or facial. The massage was decent but my 90 minute massage was more like 60 minutes!! When I walked in and asked when does my 90 min start, they said from the time they start the massage, but after exactly 60 minutes she stopped massaging me and said I was done. I then inquired at the desk again and the same person told me that it starts from when I walk in and thatincludes the clean up time after a client leaves. What a ridiculous notion! After I walked in they took 10 minutes to even take me inside. Update: Their marketing manager called me and apologized. She said there was a mix up and that they actually booked me for 60 min instead of 90. And that they should not have told me that clean up time was accounted for in my 90min. Using some vouchers I purchased, I was able to take two clients here for under $100 each. One had a facial and one had a massage. They were both so impressed that they asked me to bring them to HHS&S again next time they arrive from Florida and Delaware respectively. Damien, the owner provided services for one of my friends. He told my clients a little bit about his philosophy in running the spa and made them feel so welcome. But all the staff made good representatives of this the-customer-comes-first salon. My clients walked out with brochures, email newsletters and small gifts they bought for presents, knowing and understanding that they are welcome back and will be treated like family the next time they arrive at HHS&S. Best yet, they were excited to spend money in a local spa (rather than the giant Center city hotels we usually use), stating as they got in the car, we "finally are supporting the local economy." i don't want to overlook my great service too. Emily gave me a massage that addressed some sore spots I didn't realize I had. Thanks for the deep tissue massage. I really needed it. So, in summary, small enough to feel like home, but large enough to get three of us in for services at the same time making it a nice girls day out. Prices that can't be beat especially because it is generous with voucher services. Services that were in line with large hotel and large spa services in quality and duration. UPDATE: a woman at the desk called me only after I left a review and I still cannot figure out what she was going for with the phone call. Usually, a business will call and try to rectify a situation or not call at all. Either of those would have been fine. Instead, I got, "I saw your terrible review." She only wanted to tell me that they have never gotten this complaint, that the oil is new for every two customers (which she later stated they have gallon jugs of this oil), and that she wouldn't/could refund me. She started giving me timestamps and repeated back to me the events as if I didn't know how the whole ordeal went. I stated I didn't care what others have said prior or what your policies are, it DID happen to me and I wanted to be refunded. If that wasn't an option, I was not interested in hashing out what time of day she called. After she told me she had to speak to the owner about a refund, she wanted to keep me on the phone to try to convince me this never happens. I DON'T CARE. It happened to ME. I left it as, please leave me alone or rectify the situation. I am sure I won't hear back from anyone. I assume they wanted me to remove my review without actually fixing anything. It is tough to teach customer service but even a sincere apology would have gone farther than trying to convince me I wasn't remembering the situation correctly or a call to tell me what they COULDN'T do. read more

I got a Groupon for a signature facial and massage (each 60 minutes). I really enjoyed both, especially the facial. The practitioner doing the facial was talking to me a lot, so maybe I could have done with a little less chit chat... but she was friendly enough and I felt my facial was thorough. My massage was great, although next time I'll ask for lighter pressure. I asked for firm pressure, and boy, did she give it to me! After 2.5 hours there, I felt like I was in a haze and maybe a little stoned. The owner introduced himself to me and was trying to talk to me about the business, but I had a really hard time focusing on what he was saying. I guess that is the sign of a good spa treatment! hahaha I will surely be back, but perhaps for only one treatment at a time. Came here on a groupon, which apparently is how everyone finds out about this South Philly gem. I bought a couple's massage groupon and hoo-ly ca-rap it was awesome. I'd never gotten a professional massage before so I had no idea what to expect, and my boyfriend was totally in for a massage. Hot Hands Studio and Spa was very gracious and accommodating about a scheduling error (on both sides) and was able to fit the appointment in no problem. I can't remember who I talked to on the phone about rescheduling, but they were very helpful. The groupon included a foot scrub, and despite being kind of squeamish about people touching my feet, it was totally pleasant. Our masseurs, Steve and Denise (?) were very nice and not pretentious, which made for a very relaxed atmosphere for the massage. We all chatted during the foot scrub and then when the massage started... oh boy. That was great. I'd never had a massage before but my body didn't even feel like my body afterward. I felt taller and lighter and uninhibited, and had one of the deepest and most satisfying sleeps that night in recent memory. My boyfriend and I both work in non-profits and just carry a lot of stress with us, so going to Hot Hands was like, basically one of the most wholly pleasant things I've done in my entire life. The couple's massage was mildly cheesy (as expected), there were rose petals on the floor and everyone assumed we were married but it was a very accommodating and low-stress atmosphere. The massage room had classical music with sporadic bird sounds ... and it just worked. I was totally relaxed. I mean, if I feel like I'm listening to my grandmother's favorite hits while in the middle of the woods while someone is making my muscles feel like they're made of glitter... I'm in heaven. Pricing is fairly reasonable there even without a groupon, so I imagine I will be back every couple months to remind my back what it feels like to be stress-free. It was great. read more

Had a Yelp deal for pay ~$60 for ~$90 worth of time. I was getting a bit nervous reading all of the mixed reviews but it was close to my house so i figured I had to try. I am SO glad I did. No this is not a high tech, super chic day spa. It kind of feels like someone's home that they are welcoming you into. The receptionist was kind and efficient and made sure I was all set to go. I had a 90 minute Swedish massage from Kate and it was AWESOME. From scalp to toes she covered everything. It didn't feel rushed or anything like that either. They don't use scented oil but it was totally fine. I don't think I'll be doing the monthly membership but I will for sure be back and recommending it to friends. read more

I've been going to Hot Hands semi-regularly for over three years. This is the best place to get a massage or facial in Philadelphia, hands down. Damian is a master masseur and he has a great staff. I highly recommend the buttercream add-on, which they also sell in a little container to take home, it works great on dry hands and feet. If you go, try the various add-ons that they offer. He addressed all the issues I was having and applied the right amount of pressure.Anthony made me feel comfortable, as a female it is very important to find a reputable massage therapist. He told me to stay hydrated after my massage and gave me great pointers that helped with my back issues. I got massage perviously by Emily, her attitude was less than desirable. She seemed as if she was just going through the motions and didn't care about my experience. The receptionist seemed to care more about her cell phone than answering the businesses phone, they were not as pleasant as I would have liked. I am never going to Hot Hands or purchasing any of their services ever again. This is a culmination of going there three times and realizing that this place is not genuine and have a bad business practice. When I first went to Hot Hands, I had Damien and the massage was fine. The second time, I purchased a couples massage for my boyfriend and I. The massage was awkward because while we were faced down and getting our massage, we heard one of the masseuses giggling. This told me 1) they were not professional, 2) this was inappropriate as they were joking around while we were getting our massage (which is fine if they didn't make it obvious that they were) and made us feel uncomfortable and resulted in 3) not really feeling relaxed for the remainder of the session. The third time, I decided to give them another try because online, they had a promotion where you can purchase a 60/90 minute deep tissue massage for $20. Or so it said. I gifted this as a holiday gift to my sister and her husband. She went there, got her deep tissue massage, and they said the $20 service I purchased was only for an upgrade, and that she had to pay for the deep tissue massage which was $99. So in total, we ended up paying $99 for a deep tissue massage when we know it can be purchased for half the price on yelp and/or groupon. My sister informed me about this, so that I wouldn't purchase it for other people. I gave them a call to inform them that their website was misleading and that I would like a refund back for the 2 ($20) services I purchased. The receptionist spoke to the manager and said that while the website was misleading, my sister already had the massage and could not give us a refund. What is ridiculous about this is that they themselves said the website was misleading, the fact that we paid more for a deep tissue massage there than it would have cost my sister at her regular center city spa, and really despite location, the masseuse are not as professional or trained as other places. The masseuse my sister had was nice, but she talked the entire time during the session. This along with my own experience with the masseuse, and my attempt to reconcile their misleading service cost online, is the reason why I am giving them 1 star. read more

This is our first time here. We came for a couples massage. It was GrEaT!!! The staff are all so nice and knowledgeable. The owner is so knowledgeable and professional. He came out and introduced himself and talked to us about everything. Very nice, knowledgeable and professional. The place itself is beautiful and clean.
