The Pizza at Hot Mess is not bad. Especially for a hand made pizza made in a food trailer along the side of the road. My biggest issue with the pizza is the overuse of rosemary in the sauce. I am just not a fan of rosemary and it is very noticeable in the pizza sauce. Otherwise, the crust and toppings are good. The best part of the entire experience is Cowboy the dog. read more

I have seen this place before in passing, but this weekend, visiting Mama J, she said she was down for some Saturday night pizza. This place instantly came to mind. It is situated right next to Tapz along Highway 281 in Johnson City. The advantage is that you can go into Tapz and wait for your phone call that your pizza is ready while enjoying an ice cold beer. I did just that - with a cold Lone Star Light. See my pic on the Tapz page as reference. Our pizza came out hot and fresh. The gentleman who made the pizza and who had greeted me for ordering was a true Texan. Lean, dusty, and cool AF. He handed me my pizza with a smile and a sincere desire that I enjoy it. I took it to the car for the ten-minute ride home. You can see in the pics what awaited when I opened the box for my mom and I to see. This pizza was satisfying in every way. It was cooked perfectly with a nice balance of toppings. They don't look like much, but the flavor was there. The dough had a sweetness to it that wasn't too strong and balanced nicely with the acidity of the sauce. I want to say I had reservations about this place but I love that Johnson City has set up these food trucks right by the coffee place so we can have some variety. I will say the food is extremely some of the best pizza around with great choices. The service is fine with the cowboy in charge, and it is a food truck they do have a place in the courtyard for people to sit but all in all it is a take out and eat. I will say the inconsistency of the hours is a bit to get used to and the nonchalant attitude of the owner as if he is doing you a favor when he is open; however, the pizza is that good that I still give it 4 stars. read more

We are on vacation stopped for pizza. This sadly is the worst pizza I have ever had and I'm 50. The man wore a cowboy hat no hair net for his long hair. His hands covered in flour with the card swiper in his hands. I waited 1 hour for 2 calzones and cinnamon sticks. The dough had no flavor at all. The sauce tasted like tomato paste and it was thick. Stopped in as we were traveling this weekend in Johnson City and thought we would stop at this food truck for pizza. We were greeted with a closed window and a darkened trailer. I knocked gently on the glass to let them know they had a customer. He opened the window and said what the hell are you doing knocking on my window. Can't you see I was busy. I told him if he turned a light on inside I guess we could see that, but I knocked because I could not see a thing. Hell, we were the customer, and he decided to flat ignore us. Very tasty pizza, quick service, generous portions. We ordered a pizza and salad. They warned us the salad was big, and they were definitely right about that! If you're eating it as a "side salad" as we did, it could easily be shared by three adults. The two of us didn't finish it, which is a shame, because they put plenty of toppings on it. The lettuce was good, not just a bunch of filler. Pizza was good too. Nice blend of toppings and flavors. I prefer a crispier crust, but I realize that's mostly personal preference. It wasn't undercooked or bad, just prefer another minute or so on the crust. The staff are super friendly, personable, and even call you to let you know when it's ready. Disappointing in flavor, toppings, available food and service. It's been a long time since I've had to write a negative review but always want to take the time to do so, so others don't get misled. My husband and I spent a weekend in Johnson City for an anniversary getaway. We invited friends to stay with us during the last part of our trip and decided to order some pizzas before they arrived so we could enjoy dinner together. When we tried to place a to-go order at Hot Mess Pizza, no one answered the phone. It was right at 7pm so, we figured they were busy. My husband instead left to place the order at the food truck in-person and wait for them to be ready. He ordered two pizzas (pepperoni and jalapeño, a true staple and common order and then also a pepperoni and sausage). My husband and friends don't like veggies on pizza, so this is typically our go-to order. We also tried to order wings and another app, but my husband was told upon arriving that they were all sold out of apps. He felt bad for the guy at the pizza truck who seemed tired and rushed around. After patiently waiting for our pizzas, my husband returned and when we opened our boxes to eat, we realized the order was incorrect. Mushrooms and jalapeños and Mushrooms and sausage. I called the truck back to explain and see what we could do. The guy answered and immediately was defensive, blaming my husband for placing the order incorrectly. He told me "Take it up with your husband". I was appalled at how rude he was to me and I didn't even tell him who my husband was, so he obviously knew he messed up the last order and was on the defense already. I have a feeling he was out of pepperoni and instead of owning up to it, decided not to say anything, thinking we wouldn't care or call back. In any case, we felt it wasn't worth trying to order anything else from this dude and kept the pizzas that were bland and mediocre in taste. I think he also gave us expired/old ranch dressing. It was sour and warm, which made me spit it out immediately after tasting it, prior to dipping (thankfully). We actually ended up not eating all the pizza due to the flavor and incorrect toppings. Thankfully, we had other snacks our friends brought and plenty of hill country wine to make up for it. Just be warned if you want pizza from this truck, you may not get what you order, the pies may be below average and the service may be unwelcoming and lacking. Hope there are better pizza options in the near future for the hill country. read more

I've been meaning to post a review of Hot Mess Pizza for a while, and now we've had it several times. We just moved to Johnson City from Austin. We love pizza of all types and obviously had a ton of options in Austin, we even built a wood fired pizza oven in our backyard. Initially, I was going to say this was amazing pizza for a tiny town, which is true, but honestly this would be great pizza anywhere. The calzones and pizzas are outstanding and the garlic cheese bread is the best we've ever had! Have yet to try any of the fried items since it's been too hot to run the fryers, but the rest is delicious. The service is great, you call in an order and he calls you when it's 5 minutes from being ready so you get it at perfect temp! There only a few options locally and this is our go to, but I think it would be that just about anywhere. I Absolutely recommend Hot Mess Pizza! read more
