Friendly and easy to get to BBQ spot right off the main run in Easton MD. Great interior decor and loved the clothespin ordering line. The cashier was extraordinarily kind and helpful in picking from their various options and definitely a highlight of my time, she was even notably kind to the group who ordered right after me. There was a dining area inside but since it was just a quick bite for me I ordered to go. The food itself was OK, but nothing to write home about compared to some other BBQ I've had in my travels across the East Coast. This was my second visit. The last one was pre covid. There are many reviews 3 stars and below for this establishment. Actually, a large number below 3 stars. I love BBQ and have had the good fortune of tasting BBQ in many different states. I found some key factors missing when I ordered the brisket sandwich at Hot Off the Coals 1. No smoke flavor, really how does this happen if you really smoked it on premise. 2. Extremely dry brisket with zero character. No fat, no texture. 3. Lukewarm brisket. 4. The brisket would not absorb the side of sauce. Too dry! 5.The spicey sauce was not spicey. The fries were excellent. The service was excellent. It was very hard to give them 3 stars but since I had a positive visit before I figured they may have had the second-string cooking today. Based on the number of comments that reflect what I said they might want to pay attention. Good BBQ is not hard to accomplish. The brisket was pale looking, did not have a smoke ring, and had no flavor. The meat was wet but not from rendered fat; my guess is it was sprayed with liquid smoke. Our family is from North Carolina and we enjoy a lot of barbecue, soul, food, and the assorted sides. My husband and I both had the special, the cheddar beef melt, served with barbecue chips. While the chips were homemade, very few of them tasted like barbecue and were somewhat bland. My husband compared his sandwich to something he would get at Arby's. It was very dry and lacked grilling/smoke flavor. Our daughter had the two-meat sampler with pit ham, NC style pulled pork, collard greens, and mac & cheese. She described the pit ham as being like deli ham that was heated up in the microwave. The NC-style pulled pork was nowhere near NC-style. She didn't say much about the mac & cheese, so that must've been OK. The absolute worst thing of our meal were the collard greens. These were some the of worst greens I have ever tasted. I wouldn't be surprised if they were canned collards. Portions were also small. Our meal was over $50 (without drinks or tip) including all the nickel and diming this joint does for everything. They charge for paper condiment cups (10¢), water, cups (26¢), plastic condiment cups (30¢), and some condiments. I was surprised there was free ketchup and napkins. And there is a 4% fee for using a credit card. I understand the restaurant needs to pay for these items, but that is the cost of doing business. It gets worse from here. Our special, Cheddar Beef Melt, was posted as $12.50, but we were overcharged and paid $13.25. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it until I looked at the receipt at home. Howdy! Why 5 stars on a restaurant that's trending just above 3 on Yelp? Because they deserve it based on my recent experience. I'm from Texas, so what do I know about BBQ? Well, I do know what I see and what I taste! I saw some really big BBQ sandwiches and a turkey sandwich with fries. The meat was true to their motto, that you don't need teeth to chew their meat. It was all very tender. I asked for jalapeños & a little slaw on mine. It could have had a little more sauce, but we were eating in the car, so no drips are good for us. The fries were very similar to Thrasher fries without the Old Bay and vinegar. One crazy thing that happened for the food was my score on a 2 lb. Platter of smoked meat that was beautifully pink and lightly smoked. I say score, since it was the day before the Superbowl and we were on a strict time schedule just passing through, and someone there to pick up had confused brisket with beef and they had his platter of beef made. Since this was my first time stopping by, even though I have passed by this place over 10 years or more, she was so helpful. The day we came in it was legit 105 degrees outside and I am pretty sure this place was at least 101. Why was there no A/C?! The service was quick. The food was priced decently. I got a pulled pork sandwich and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was amazing. It was small but so good and cheesy and gooey and melty. The sandwich was a bit dry but then I noticed the side table by the ordering counter. There was a spicy and s sweet BBQ. I wasn't particularly a fan of either. After taking a bike ride in Talbot Country, we decided to try this place as we are fans of good barbeque. We were very disappointed in the quality of the sandwiches and especially disappointed in the cost for the sandwiches, especially the brisket. A four ounce brisket sandwich will set you back $12.50. I thought this was a lot when I ordered it, but I thought it was going to be something special. It wasn't. The meat was dry and had no smoke flavor at all. We live in the DC suburbs and are fortunate to be within walking distance to two excellent barbeque places. Their cost for a very excellent 4 oz. brisket sandwich is $8 and $9, respectively. That is a reasonable price; $12.50 is outrageous for what you get at this restaurant. I would recommend venturing a couple blocks toward Easton for much better restaurants at a reasonable price. I was hungry coming into town, so I saw this bbq spot that I wanted to support. I go inside there's one person in front of me. So, I finally got my chance to order.The lady rung up my order, and I specified what I wanted a simple 5 piece grilled chicken and fries. Customers starting pouring in after I ordered. They placed their order and got out before me, it was mind blowing.I remained patient, and finally my order comes out I opened the container only to find it wasn't anything I ordered. They gave me naked fried chicken, so I sent it back. The cook out from the back to tan to me with a demanding persona, so I specified what I wanted he says "okay let me go get you grilled chicken". I waited 15 more mins while they prepared it. I receive my new order and I opened it, the cook decided to put the fried chicken on the grill and give it to me. I couldn't make this up. Based on the pics, it does look like this place is incapable of cooking decent brisket, so I can understand a lot of the complaints. However, the Carolina pulled pork sandwich I ordered was excellent, and I grew up in the heart of eastern NC. Not exactly true to our style, but nonethless a really solid effort with tender, smoky pork and quite respectable cole slaw on a good bun.
