I've grown up going to this place. They have weird hours and operations. Typically open on Sundays. A perfect place to stop and bring food to wherever you go. I recommend bringing cash and ordering a quarter chicken, chips and pickles. Nice outside area where you could freely sit anywhere. read more

This BBQ place serves One thing and one thing only: barbecue chicken. The platter, at eight dollars, comes with bread, chips, pickles, and vinegar sauce. Delicious. You can also get the chicken by itself. They are only open on weekends and are managed by the local Kiwanis group. Simple good food. read more

On Sunday July 20th I stopped at the Kiwanis barbecue and got two half chickens. I took them home went to cut them up but they were so dried out and overcooked I couldn't even cut them with a sharp butcher knife. What I did cut my dog would not even eat. I went back today Sunday July 27th and told the guys about it and they said well that's not our chicken I feel bologna it's not. I said it was soul to me by a woman with two kids young boys in the shack. what I should have done was taken the chicken right back and stuffed it in their face but no like the Good Samaritan I am I didn't do that I thought I was just stopped by today to let them know. I thought maybe they would give me two new chickens but no they're too cheap. My recommendation and advice to anybody who buys chicken there, open the box first before you leave to see the consistency of the chicken that it is not baked to a crisp on the fire grill fire pit grill. I would not like to see anyone else disappointed like I was. I don't know who did the cooking that day on the grill but they need to listen big time. ONE VERY DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER!!!! Went there Sunday and got chicken that I could not eat. The attach picture will show that the chicken was burnt. I don't mind a little black on my chicken but that chicken was burnt. I live 5 minutes from this place and it's tbe secon time I get burnt chicken. Wanted to try a second time because of the reviews but never again. Avoid this place. read more

I must have been going 60 mph on the roads and almost came to an instantaneous stop after I smelled the BBQ. My gut told me this place was special and I am very glad that I stopped here on the way to Dewey Beach. Kiwanis chicken has to be one of the top 2 chicken spots I have tried on the East Coast. Kiwanis BBQ is run by volunteers of the Kiwanis International, a non-profit organization serving children around the world. As part of serving the mission, the Kiwanis Chapter in Delaware has volunteers who sell chicken during the weekends to raise money for needy children. Everything about this place is very simple. The location is off the roadside. You'll be eating outdoors and you'll only have 1 choice on the menu: the chicken ($6.5 for a half chicken). I recommend paying an extra $1 for sides ( corn bread, pickles, and potato chips). The chicken is so flavorful, moist and tender and marinade seems to a have a slight herbal and vinegary taste to it. It is cooked on an outdoor charcoal pit which packs an intense charcoal flavoring which I absolutely love. While the cooks state that this is a memphis/kansas and god knows what hybrid style, I can't recognize what style it is and I really don't care because it's so fantastic. This is a case example of how good ingredients (e.g., locally sourced Delaware chicken) and scratch cooking can create fantastic dishes that surpass highly touted restaurants in metropolitan areas. For enhancing the flavor, I strongly recommend you add the dipping sauce (or rather smother the chicken with the sauce). As a final reminder, please note that this place is CASH ONLY and is only OPEN ON WEEKENDS. They do not provide utensils (I've seem some regulars bring their own). Lastly, the bathroom is a portable bathroom stall so it can get a bit nasty. If you can handle these minor inconveniences, you'll be having a wonderful meal while helping further Kiwanis's mission for helping needy children. read more

Kiwanis is probably one of the best bbq chickens I've had in the east coast. We were on our way to Rehoboth beach, and Waze app took us to this back route. Jason C said he was starving and as I was opening my yelp app we saw black smoke in the air. It was impossible to miss that ginormous bbq smoke and had to stop by. Maybe it is a common scene in Texas, but I had never seen over 50 chickens being grilled together like a happy family over bbq pit. Kiwanis is operated by a group of volunteers, and they are open only on weekends during summer season. As we were mesmerized with the bbq scene, we noticed the line forming and people coming in. Although it looks like it is located in the middle of no where, Kiwanis is really popular and it gets packed. We were lucky that we arrived early at around 11am, so we could purchase hot smoking chicken and sit down immediately to eat. My only complain is that it would have tasted even better if the chicken meat was marinated a little more. Regardless, its sweet herbal vinegar marinade tastes incredibly delicious, and the chicken was grilled so perfectly moist. If you are on your way to vacation in DE/Ocean city from DMV area, I would really highly recommend this place. It is sad to think that I have to wait till next year to eat this chicken. read more

We stopped by this spot not expecting a lot on our way back from the beach back home to DC, and ended up stumbling upon some of the best grilled chicken we've ever had -- all for just 7 bucks a platter. Don't miss the baked goods on the corner table - highly recommend the delicious, chewy brownies! Double plus - it's all for a good cause, raising money for charity. Just stopped here for lunch on the way back from Rehoboth Beach to DC. It was delicious! You can get a half chicken for $6.50 or half chicken plus chips, bread and a pickle for $7.50. They roast their chickens on the other side of the lot in a great seasoning mix. The place is very bare bones - picnic tables, paper towels, porto-potties, and a faucet. Finally stopped after literally driving by this place hundreds of times. Oh, how I regret those lost years! This chicken is sublime. Definitely get a cup of the sauce to dip it in as well. Absolutely delicious. And at $7.50 for the combo (b&b pickles, a roll and a bag of chips) and $6.50 for the half-chicken alone, it's a real bargain. Three of us each got a half chicken for lunch and were able to pick the meat from the leftovers and make three large, delicious chicken salad sandwiches drenched in the last of the sauce for dinner. Insanely delicious. The only "complaint" I will make is that they don't serve any of the Delmarva Silver Queen corn, that surrounds the area, on the side, although that might be too much goodness for one meal. This year the Kiwanis annual barbecue cook off was horrible. I bought a chicken and pulled pork plates. The meat was prepared by choo-choo barbecue not the Kiwanis organization and the difference was not worth it. The chicken was too salty and shredded, the pulled pork tasted like boiled meat. I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee and will not support this annual event ever again if meal prepared by choo-choo barbecue. Just wasted $20 on an inedible meal. It was a ripoff and choo-choo will never get my business. When prepared by Kiwanis Club it was excellent! read more
