This is one of my favorite Caribbean restaurants in all of NJ and I've been to a couple. This Trinidadian owned restaurant knows how to make a good curry chicken with roti, fresh. Great variety, seasonal and holiday items, and also desserts and drinks. I often try something new and each time I do I am never disappointed. Not so good: because the food is so good this place is very popular. So if you're going on a weekend or the evening you are better off calling your order in ahead of time. I was super excited to find a roti shop in the area and Hot on D Spot did not disappoint in the slightest! I ordered a dhal puri with fillings of pumpkin and chana. The dhal puri had a good proportion of split peas to roti. I asked for hot sauce and the amount was perfect to give the filling a kick of spice. The portion was massive and well worth the $8-I could only eat half and saved the rest for later. Oh man the goat roti had me singing with joy. Roti with the channa was perfect. Way too much food for one meal and could definitely save the rest for dinner. The goat was so tender with a proper Trinidadian curry to dip my roti as well. The pepper sauce was fiery and full of flavor that will have you coming back for a second lick and shouting because now you're sweating and full into it. Try the doubles for a lighter meal. Indra was super sweet. I prefer Dhal Puri roti skin vs the plain/buss up shut roti skin in general ... the powdered chick peas give the roti more flavor... tried the boneless chicken . You have option for bone or boneless . We picked up food from here three to four times in the last 2-3 years and were never disappointed. Our favorite dish is their doubles---something like chickpea curry in between a fried bread---very cheap and very yummy. We liked their chicken, goat, and shrimp dishes as well. OMG! This small restaurant put out the best curry chicken and roti that I haven't had in a while. I found it on Yelp". Very friendly Indian women greet my husband and I. We ordered the boneless chicken wrap with potatoes and chickpeas was soooo goooooood, they got the season right. The wrap was huge. I should have ordered one and split with my husband but we took the remainder home. I ordered three roti and boneless curry chicken to go. I must say the flavor and the amount were on point. I was born and raised in Brooklyn in the Flatbush and Crowns Heights area known for the West Indian melting pot neighborhoods. My favorite has always been my Shrimp Roti Wrap. Since moving to NJ, I recently discovered Hot On D Spot which took me back to my Brooklyn days. Friendly staff and of course their Shrimp Roti Wrap is On Point! It's big, flavorful and filling with Shrimp and Potatoes in its Trini Curry (ask for the pepper sauce on the side if you're not daring for heat)! I live 30 minutes away so whenever I'm in the area, I make sure to stop and get my Roti fix! P.S. I would have taken a photo but could not wait and stop to take a picture! read more

The roti, pholourie, bake, aloo pie, chicken, duck, pumpkin, doubles, oxtail, salt fish are all good. The goat and beef are good but it depends on the right cut of meat to be really tasty. The food is always fresh, tasty, not greasy and well priced for the portions. Why am I really giving it 5 stars? It's something she makes occasionally off the menu - the most crave-able Caribbean Chinese food. That food alone deserves a five star rating! Just be careful: you will fall in love with the food and your patience will need to grow since it's not on the menu and it sells out quickly. The owner says it is called cassava bone, and looks a bit like pumpkin pie( it contains cassava, coconut and a small amount of pumpkin) The roti was tasty and very filling, I was pondering that this is a perfect chilly weather meal, esp for a meat n taters type of hunger. The seasoning was interesting and I did like the roti part of it too, and found that the powdered chick peas in between the layers to be a tasty if somewhat messy treat. The double was even better, I would considering buying several and freezing to use as a side dish or snack. The dessert was pumpkin pie-esque, but with hints of coconut. I imagined how good it would be with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, sadly, I had neither Roy, the owner is very friendly, and very confident in his food. My food adventure took me to this little spot tugged away in hamilton. I used to loved in hamilton and never noticed this spot. My co-worker told me about it today and I was thoroughly intrigued by it. We decided to come here for lunch as we were looking for some good food to help us get through the workday. You can easily missed this little restaurant if you were not looking for it. It's in a little plaza with other little shops. The menu looks very similar to a Jamaican restaurant, small menu focusing on couple of main protein. My co-worker and I both decided to go with the 'chicken stew' with black eye peas and potatoes. The chicken is served on top of the rice next to the potatoes. Very generous portion. When I took my first bite of the rice, I realized this was not a wasted drive for lunch. It had great flavor and slight crunch from the black eye peas made a good balanced. Potatoes was soft and flavorful, you can tell it was stewed for a while in the sauce. Last but not least, the chicken was very good. Good portion with bone in for extra flavor. Each bite was full of flavor that you keep coming back for more. (If you like spicy, be sure to ask for a side of hot sauce) It was a good choice and I would definitely come back to this place. Overall, very pleased. Look, if you're looking through this right now because you're hungry and wondering if this local place is good, just stop reading and go. Close your eyes, point at anything on menu and you'll be good. Trust. Go. Now. Okay, still reading? Not hungry yet? Have no idea what Trinidadian cuisine is? Fellow Yelper Gerald S. probably gave the best Reader's Digest description I've ever read, saying, "Trinidad was settled by a mix of folks who really did not want to be there - African slaves and Indian indentured servants (almost slaves). They mixed together into a very interesting and spicy society. The food evolved into something that did not look or taste like either's home cooking. It was sort of like Indian with similar breads and curry orientation, but with meat on the bone dishes that were of a different continent." So, Afro-Caribbean food in a forced marriage with Indian spices. Tonight I started with a double. I ALWAYS start with a double. It will feel very familiar to anyone who has ever eaten Indian food; a mix of curry, chick peas and potato, served between two pillow-y soft pieces of fried flat bread called baras. They are available with chicken or shrimp for an upcharge, but the vegetarian version is so good that I'm afraid to mess with it. At $1.50 a serving, I could gladly make a cheap meal of 3 of these if it weren't for the numerous other delicious choices. Not surprisingly, rotis are this shop's big draw, and for good reason. I normally go with the goat, and it is always delicious. Tonight I went with boneless chicken, and as expected it was an absolutely massive serving. It doesn't look like much when they hand it to you, but their roti wraps have the density of small black hole. The insides were stuffed to capacity with a deliciously spiced and tender chicken, potatoes, and a curry flavoring that lies somewhere in between a paste and a dry rub. Hard to explain, fabulous to eat. While I generally go for the rotis, I have also tried the Oxtail Stew on the staff's suggestion, and I was not disappointed. Tender, spicy fall of the bone oxtails in broth with black eyed peas and rice is right up my alley. This place is a wonderful ambassador for Trini food in our area. The owners take pride in what they do, and it is clear that they have the healthy support of the local neighborhood. You should absolutely NOT be intimidated or nervous about trying what may be an entirely new flavor profile here. If you're in doubt, ASK! The staff are all very knowledgeable and willing to guide you into something you're sure to like. So in all transparency I've never eaten Trinidadian food before. We were headed to the Grounds for Sculpture and wanted to grab a bite to eat. There was little strip mall with a few options so we parked and explored what they had to offer. I love trying new food, so we skipped the deli and chinese and decided to go for it. It's very mom and pop and lots of locals coming in and out. Service is a bit slow, but we weren't in a rush so it didn't much matter. We ordered doubles with shrimp and the beef roti. I could have devoured 2 or 3 doubles. Packed with flavor and those chickpeas were cooked perfectly. Again, never having roti before it was very similar to a stewed beef, but packed with spices and flavor. The roti was huge and I'm glad we only ordered one to split as I would have needed a nap afterwards. If you're looking for a no frills, hole in the wall, local place check it out. read more

Best Caribbean food in the state! I've eaten at several West Indian restaurants, and by far, the food here is the best. I never leave unsatisfied, I always leave full for the whole day. Anytime I eat here, I don't eat for the whole day and get the boneless chicken roti wrap, and it fills me up for the entire day! That and the chicken doubles are to die for! I brought a few of my friends here to eat and they all agree that the food is absolutely superb! And the staff is always so friendly as well. Definitely my favorite restaurant in the state of New Jersey. To give you perspective, I live in Newark and have often taken the hour and 15 minute drive, just to eat here. Yo this is my spot! They make everything from scratch. It's family run. Grandma and mom in the back cooking. Grandpa up front running the dining area. Don't know about you, but I had never tried Trini cuisine before; and in fact while I knew that Trinidad was an island in the Caribbean, I knew little of its history and culture. My loss. Trinidad was settled by a mix of folks who really did not want to be there - African slaves and Indian indentured servants (almost slaves). They mixed together into a very interesting and spicy society. The food evolved into something that did not look or taste like either's home cooking. It was sort of like Indian with similar breads and curry orientation, but with meat on the bone dishes that were of a different continent. Regardless, the food was great. We had some Doubles - basically Chickpea and Potato mash with Curry in small round Naan-like soft breads. Very tasty and definitely a cousin of Samosa. Next I ordered Roti with Boneless Chicken, while my companion went with Roti and Goat. Both had a side of the same mix of Chickpea and Potato found in the Double. I thought the Chicken outshined the Goat. It was tender and in small pieces long cooked in a spice pot. The Goat was still on the bone. It required more work to eat it, and to my palate, was darker and more gamey than I like. The accompanying Roti was superb. It was large and folded up on the plate, but as it was taken out and ripped apart to be used to pick up the meats and veggies, it had elasticity and a ground Chickpea and spice dusting on the inside that added taste and a curiously fine grit to the experience. I could not finish it. I hope to learn how to eat with one hand without using utensils and just pinching the food with the Roti. It is much harder than it looks, especially if you try not to get your hand dirty. The owners and staff were very friendly. We engaged in a running conversation about the food and life in Trinidad. Fascinating. The house only has four tables and a fridge with cold drinks. I stopped beforehand to pick up a six pack of Red Stripe to add to the festivities. Not often that I gave a place 5 stars, but this is one of those times. I've had some authentic Trini food in my day--and all I can say is --YES. This food was BANGIN. I'm so happy that I found a real Trini spot that I don't have to take a bridge or tunnel to get to. I'm talking to you, Brooklyn/Staten Island. Ordered the aloo pie with tamarind.... shrimp and pumpkin roti.... spicy mango.... washing it down with cold mauby and sorrel... and all of it was DYNAMITE. I love this place... I've tried pretty much everything on the menu. The roti bread is fantastic - both the shrimp and the boneless chicken are great. The bake and saltfish (only on Fridays and Saturdays) is a huge portion for only six bucks. The doubles are yummy as well. The spice level is fantastic - don't underestimate their hot pepper sauce. My sister complained about the size of the hot sauce until she tasted it and realized that a little goes a long way. They also make homemade sorrel, ginger beer, peanut punch and mauby drinks. Every single one of them is worth a try. The service is great as well. The owners take a lot of pride in the restaurant and the ingredients they use and it shows. Everyone I've brought here has enjoyed the experience. It's a tiny little place to and it doesn't have a ton of seating so I wouldn't recommend this for a large group. Loved it! Got the doubles and a roti with spinach and potatoes. They were both so good that I'm still thinking about the food the day after. The roti was so impossibly large that I can't believe I ate the whole thing. Seriously, I wish I had a scale. It wouldn't surprise me if it topped two pounds. And really, that's my only complaint. I really wish they offered a smaller version of their roti so I wouldn't have to feel like such a pig after I've demolished both that and an order of doubles. You could say, "Just skip the doubles, then." In which case, I would be forced to smack you. There is no skipping the doubles. The doubles are fantastic. So soft and comforting. So deeply flavorful. Without a smaller roti, I might have to make do with just getting a double order of doubles and making a meal out of those. But I do really want to get back and try the goat, so I guess it will just be another day when my giant HODS lunch kills my appetite for dinner. read more
