Hot Spot Yoga was not my first foray into hot yoga; my first experience at another studio had left me lukewarm at best. Nonetheless, I was eager to try a new physical activity and - already a fan of "regular" yoga - I figured I would give Hot Spot a try. The positive first impression has lasted until now and I have continued to visit Hot Spot for regular Bikram sessions. The staff was helpful and welcoming when I first arrived, and encouraged those new to Bikram to take places in the back and to watch more difficult poses as more experienced people in front of us performed them. I appreciate having corrections made to my posture, and the instructor I had was encouraging and would offer tips gently and surreptitiously so that I didn't feel self-conscious as a beginner to the practice of Bikram yoga. I was impressed that I made it through the full 90 minute session and - even more impressive - that I wanted to come back for more as soon as I could. I would definitely recommend Hot Spot to those new to Bikram, as well as to those who are more experienced and want to practice in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Turns anyone into a Hot Tamale! I have been trying to improve my health and was given a Groupon to attend Bikram Yoga. I have many other female friends who praised Bikram Yoga as being "so much better" and "so addicting". Although I enjoy yoga, I am not a big fan of subjecting myself to extreme temperatures . Bikram Yoga is not for everyone: this style of yoga is about discipline, heat, and positioning your body to release toxins. This is not a style that focuses on meditation, flexibility, being comfortable in your body. I would suggest an introductory class for first time Bikram participants because 90 minutes is a long time to sit in a hot room to figure out if your body can handle it without being able to leave if needed. Now to review this actual business. The space is almost impossible to find via GPS or even visually. This business is located off of I71 almost 25 minutes from downtown Louisville. There are no late comers allowed in class so I would make sure to do a drive by or give yourself and additional 15 minutes to find the location. This spot is located on the bottom floor of a split level shopping center. If you GPS the bank that is right across the street you will see the red Bikram sign easily from the parking lot. My first experience was with my friend and we were warned about the discipline part of Bikram. However, our first experience while in such a hot room was extremely cold for customer service. We were basically told to sit in the back and given no encouragement only criticism. I used the rest of my Groupon with a different instructor who was more considerate and encouraging even approaching me to learn my name after a couple classes. Come already changed with no gym bags because the locker room for women is just an over-sized bathroom. There is nothing fancy about this place. All the focus is on the small hot yoga room. Unfortunately, because this business is on the bottom floor, during our quiet yoga times you can often hear vacuums, walking, and disrupting sounds. I got my money out of my $20 Groupon, but this place still isn't hot enough for me to come back. read more

This was one of the first yoga studios I ever visited, back around Christmas 2002, and I continued to practice here consistently until I moved to LA in 2006. Whenever I go back to visit, several times a year, I practice here, and sometimes teach, as I received my Bikram teaching certification four years ago. I have practiced yoga in studios all over the US and also in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I practice mostly Bikram, but occasionally other styles as well (vinyasa flow, astanga, other 'hot yoga'). I always appreciate a great teacher, and feel blessed to be able to study with renowned yoga teachers in LA and have opportunities to travel as well. Kristin, the owner at Hot Spot, runs a top-notch studio. She cares about everyone--all the students and teachers. I have often recommended this studio not only to all my Louisville friends (both ones who have and haven't practiced yoga before), but also to my teacher friends, as a great place to practice and hone their teaching skills. The regular students here are also--Top Notch! They listen, they try, they come consistently and practice their hearts out. As a result, they see huge improvements in physical conditions, as well as increased mental satisfaction and happiness in day to day life. I have a true love in my heart for this studio, and all the people in it. The energy here is warm and welcoming. The students and staff are gracious, kind and supportive. A yoga tradition like no other! The teachers here are extremely gifted communicators who can instruct you in the safe and proper form so you get 100 percent of the benefit. My all time favorite offering here is the 90 minute traditional Bikram class. It is perfect for beginners because the 90 min class has more time for instruction. As someone who has never been able to touch her toes with straight legs while sitting or standing, I was at first worried about trying Bikram Yoga when I started. I didn't want to look stupid, I didn't want people to judge me for not being flexible, and more over, I didn't want to injure myself. Aside from the 20 minute AM/PM Yoga DVDs I did like, 5 times in college, I had to Yoga experience. The first time I went to Bikram I was told by the instructor that my goal was to stay in the room for the whole 90 minutes. Seems like a simple enough goal - except you don't realize until after the first 3-4 postures that the room is incredibly hot and humid, and you're VERY sweaty!! If you feel light headed, dizzy, can't focus, or that you're gonna vomit, just lie down in "dead mans pose". Some poses I still can't do "all the way" but the instructors do tell you what the minimum you need to do to get the full benefit from the posture - which usually isn't a whole heck of a lot! Bikram is very challenging, and even though you do the same postures on the same order every class, not all classes are the same. Just like any other workout, you have good days and bad days. On the flip side though, the yoga is VERY therapeutic! My kneecap was shifted laterally, and with physical therapy and Bikram Yoga a minimum of 1-2 times a week, I recovered much quicker. I am still not super flexible, but from where I started, I have seen huge improvements. My legs don't cramp up when I'm sleeping anymore. My skin looks FABULOUS from the detoxing. My neck and shoulder pains from where I carry all my stress is less noticeable. I sleep REALLY well! I've lost some weight, but I've lost more inches off my waist, and I'm looking more toned. (Thanks to all the instructors for helping me modify my poses so I could get maximum benefit!!) Not every workout is for everyone, but if you are looking for something that will give you cardio and strength training, as well as a great sweat seesh, you seriously need to look into this place! You only need one groupon to see how it'll work for you! **I have been attending Bikram anywhere from 1-3 days a week since December 2014. I, too, began my Bikram practice through a Groupon... no shame in that! I was looking for an alternative / addition to my consistent gym workouts and felt like it might be time to try this workout-to-end-all-workouts I had been hearing about. I was looking for something to really embrace and improve myself inside and out. Upon arriving at my first class the staff greeted me whole heartedly and helpful. During my first class I have to admit it was odd to be dictated and corrected continuously through the postures.... Bikram is verbally instructed, not demonstrated, so I think it's something you have to get used to. It was hard for me to turn my mind off and just listen, but boy was it worth it! Now, as a more veteran student, I realize the instruction and "nit picking" is to help prevent injury and improve students overall practice. After visiting other studios in Louisville where there were constant distractions, no consistency or discipline, and students and teachers only wanted to stare at themselves in the mirror, I realized there was no other studio but Bikram Yoga of Louisville that I could call my own. My biggest compliment so far - when I visited another Bikram College of India studio in Los Angeles the regular students thought that I was a traveling teacher because I was taught technique so well at this studio! The owner personally answers all emails and phone calls herself within 24 hours... You will not find that anywhere else! I consider this studio and its staff my second family. I love every teacher - Kelly, Erin, Laura, Sheila, Kristen, all of them - they are each different and teach in their own way....always effective and sometimes entertaining...but always consistent and effective! I know each correction is because they truly want me to grow and improve, not to be insulting! We pay a lot of money to be in that hot room .... I'd be mad if they DIDN'T correct my postures! I love yoga and I wanted to try to get back into hot yoga but also try some other things as well when I saw a groupon for this place and saw that they offered hot pilates as well as Vinyasa, both of which I have been interested in trying. I have a girlfriend that does Vinyasa in another town and she has been pushing me to try it but I have really only found Hatha yoga other than the hot yoga here in Louisville. Hatha is great but it is slow and not always flowing. I really wanted something that kept moving in a nice flow. Lets just say that the teacher they have is freaking brilliant in this area. She gave me exactly what I was looking for. It was a good workout without tapping into my Type A - Have to be the best at Yoga - personality that hot yoga has thrown me into in the past. A great flow with great stretches and some good challenging holds! Perfecto! I also did a pilates class and I really liked that too. All of the instructors that I have had have been super sweet. Definitely a good studio! My only request is if all the yoga studios in town would REQUIRE the men to wear at least bike shorts. Yeah, its hot but we have on a sport bra and shorts at the least so men can spare a few more square inches of material. [Am I judging? I don't think so, it is really more that I don't want to see more than I really should. I definitely won't ever be going to a naked yoga (Don't worry - that is NOT offered here. I love this studio and the instructors are welcoming, but not hovering. Kristen is a gifted teacher who will help you grow your personal yoga practice with repeated exposure to her class. As a new student you'll take a spot on your mat and towel in the back to give you a birds eye view of seasoned students and allow you a measure of anonymity while learning the 26 postures. This place is very DANGEROUS for your body. I've studied and been a professional practitioner of various forms exercise, movement and bodywork for the past 7 years. I've been a yoga student for the past 9 years, hot yoga, hatha, slap whatever name you want here. Every single practitioner and instructor has taught me to never lock joints, NEVER flex beyond where your body is wanting to go. Listen to the body. Push, but don't force. This is how breaking and injury can occur. I am not surprised Bikram Yoga has such a high injury rate. The exact opposite is exemplified. I was repeatly told to lock joints and twist my body into extreme poses very rapidly. Then do it again. Then do it again, faster. "Its supposed to hurt!" There is a huge difference between good workout pain and a, I think a tendon is going to snap. I looked around at all the locked knees baring the weight of so many bodies and cringed at what it was doing to the cartilage and tendons. I was basically yelled out for the entire 90 minutes when I listened to what my body was telling me, instead of what the instructor, Kelly was. I was told I was "disrupting class" when I forwent a pose and decided to practice balance poses instead. The only thing disrupting the class was the instructor choosing to yell at me instead of paying attention to her students. She never offered alternatives or builds to poses and seemed to expect discipline and blind following, instead of people more willing to listen to their body and understand what their body was safely capable of. I was shocked that this blatant disregard for safe practice and aggressive bullying instead of educated instruction. When the class was over I was pulled aside and told "This is Bikram. It expects discipline and if you want to do "another type of yoga" maybe you should go somewhere else." When I told her that some of the moves were dangerous, so I was choosing not to do them, she told me I should just "stand there with my arms at my sides." Really? Stand there and not move because I'm given no options how to proceed? It was a very ignorant statement and attitude towards being efficient and safe with ones body. Groupon was kind enough to give me a refund after this experience and encouraged me to write this review. I strongly recommend you just cash that sucker back in and go somewhere safe. read more

I originally tried this Bikram studio, along with a few others, due to some Groupon specials. This is the place I kept coming back to. The location is convenient for me, which is factor. The facility is clean, the owner and instructors are courteous. I am a newbie to Bikram/hot yoga, and I feel that I get a lot of instruction and guidance here. I LOVE THIS STUDIO!!! The fact that all the teachers are certified and re-Certified as they should be according to Bikram is a definite plus! DID NOT enjoy. A few reasons why: #1 They dictate when you can and cannot have water. #2 They don't allow use of a hand towel. I was repeatedly "scolded" for wiping off in order to be able to grip my knees/legs. #3 You are encouraged to push too far. As another review said, the "it's supposed to hurt" thing was a first for me. I've never had a personal trainer or fitness instructor of any kind say it was healthy to push past your limits. I had to post my comment after reading the 1 negative post by the one-class participant. I have been a student at this studio for almost 7 years and I drive 25 minutes to get there 4 times a week. I cannot express enough just how this practice has positively changed me both physically and mentally. The first class I took caught me by surprise, but since I really wanted something that gave me an all-in-one workout this was perfect for me. You progress at your own pace and ALL of the instructors--including Kelly--are so encouraging!! This is a guided practice where you work as a unit and stay together (yoga means union, right?) You have to do this in order to keep your focus. It is very distracting if other students do not stay with the pose that is being taught. It's just like any other self-disciplined class. If you go to a spin class you get on the bike, not run in place... Just remember to drink your water before and after class! read more

I have been practicing for the past five years and have tried every studio in the Louisville area. This has been by far the best yoga experiance I have ever had. You truely feel like part of the yoga family here as you are instantly greeted at the door by warm smiles and friendly faces. The instructors are very knowledgable and you see them before and after class taking time to address student questions concerning everything from correct position alignment to personal nutrition and hydration. They all address you by your first name and remember your name when you return. The other yogis who frequent this studio are also very friendly, warm, and welcoming so you feel like such a part of a community. They remember your stories and ask about your family and friends. The classes challenge me in only the true Bikram experience. I love the discipline and meditation behind this yoga as well as the physical elation I feel after class. All of the instrucors are amazing and contrary to what has been written in two reviews, I have never been yelled at by any instrucor. Kelly is always spot on with her dialogue and has a great sense of humor. As a teacher myself, I appreciate good instruction so much. In fact, when an instrucor comes over to help me make an adjustment or encourages me to get my leg up higher, I feel benefit from that. I WANT to grow and improve in my practice! What person in their right mind would want to pay for a class, put their time and energy to get there, and not receive any feed back or encouragement? It is the AWESOME instruction that has kept me coming back here. If you are not receiving any feed back then how do you know if you are improving or even doing the position correctly? The best is when you get Kristen, the owner and director as your instructor. She is fun and funny- she uses humor in her classes to encourage students to work hard so they get a good work out. She will often say "Get your moneys worth and get your arms up over your head." Plus, if she looks that good doing this yoga- then I definately want to be doing it for as long as my body can! She shows compassion and caring for her students. She talks to them individually after class about hydration, health, and supplements they should take if they have had past injuries. Water is drunk after the warm up which is about twenty minutes into class. After that you can have water whenver you want between postures. If you can't wait 20 minutes to have a sip, then you have not hydrated enough before class. Come on...really? Everyone is there for the meditation and discipline. We share the energy. I have sent friends to this studio and they were instantly hooked. A yoga newbie am I and I have enjoyed learning at Bikram Yoga Louisville! Could be my military background or the fact that I did team sports through the college level, but I have had no issues with instructors. In fact, I found the instructors take care to correct my attempts at poses and are encouraging throughout the class. I feel these yoga classes are a great compliment to all the running I've been doing. Highly recommend. read more

I have been going to Bikram Yoga Louisville an average of 6 days a week since last August 2012. I have no affiliation with this studio other than being a dedicated student. I have to say that if you are looking for a Bikram Yoga studio this is the place to go! There are a lot of other studios out there that claim to do Bikram Yoga or "hot yoga" but many of there teachers have never been Bikram trained or were trained years ago and never kept up with their certification. Every one of the teachers at BYL were trained by Bikram Choudhury himself. Kristin, the owner, has attended countless advanced seminars and knows Bikram well and thus the teachings of BYL come directly from the creator. I can't emphasize enough why this is so important. Bikram Yoga was designed as beginner's yoga which is why the careful direction of the teachers is necessary to achieve the desired effects if the yoga. During my entire time at BYL I have heard the teachers say time and time again to not force into any pose and that you have a lifetime to achieve the pose. These teachers are also experienced enough to identify when a pose should be modified to achieve maximum benefit. Finally, one part of yoga that is often forgotten is the art. BYL and their staff help encourage order and balance in the room for the sake of many students that have been practicing for a long time. In another review on here, somebody mentioned wanting to do a balancing pose when the rest of the room is doing a different pose and then getting corrected. This is part of the art of yoga. Wiping sweat, drinking water after every pose etc are distractions from the yoga and I have never heard anything other than a friendly reminder from the staff about this. As I mentioned before, this is beginning yoga. Anyone can do it! It just takes dedication. Kristin and her staff run an amazing studio based on 4000+ years of hatha-based yoga. It has cured an arthritic ankle for me, helped my posture, improved my skin, and toned my body. Kristin also has workshops with world renowned hatha champions like Joseph Encinia! Her dedication and patience for beginners yoga is obvious when you come to this studio and she has the body to prove it! I have practiced Bikram yoga for over 5 years and I practice martial arts for 27 years before switching to Bikram yoga. Bikram is a work out. When I started, my knees were shot from years of martial arts, but I found my knees getting better as I continued practicing over the weeks. I've found when I am unable to practice, my knees start to stiffen over time. After going back and practicing for several weeks, my knees again improve. I call it getting my "yoga knees" back. As another reviewer mentions, there are a couple of poses where you lock your knee. This was very hard for me to get used to, because my martial arts training was always on a slightly bent knee. I have learned though that "lock your knee" is not the same as hyper-extend. There are many minute adjustments in the postures, it's impossible to understand or judge this yoga after only one class. After 5 years I still continue to learn new things. That's the beauty of Bikram, you never arrive, it is always a practice. We are often told to go at our own pace because we have our whole life to practice! I have been to Bikram schools around the country, I would rate Hot Spot as one of the best. The instruction and the instructors are excellent and consistent. Hot Spot is the only certified Bikram school in Louisville, which means each instructor is re-certified by Bikram every couple of years. The practice is 90 minutes and 26 postures each done twice. Bikram yoga is different than many forms of yoga in that everyone practices the same posture at the same time. Instructors will encourage you to listen to your body, not go deeper in a posture than you can and sit out or stand quietly if you cannot do a posture so you do not disrupt the class. Make sure you are hydrated, it's HOT... but then, the heat makes the practice more cardio and helps get deeper into poses by helping relax muscles. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I was new to yoga and not flexible. Some of the instructors understood and showed me how to use a towel to stay in certain poses while I worked into it. I unfortunately took a class with the owner, she yelled at me in front of everyone for using the towel. When I said I couldn't get into the pose, she told me to just stand there. So I stood there, not doing yoga for several minutes. How was I supposed to learn? WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! Since then I've gone to REAL yoga classes with REAL teachers where you can use props to assist you as your body adjusts. I've learned so much! If you go here expect a hellish, strident, militaristic class where they love to embarrass you if you're not perfect. read more

I started Bikram yoga due to a great groupon I purchased, 20 classes for $20. (You can't beat that) I had never done any type of yoga prior to this experience so I was a little nervous. All of my nerves left me when I went to the first class. The instructor with the very blonde hair was so welcoming and conducted a wonderful class. She was very helpful without being to critical for my first experience. I can say the Bikram yoga is a unique experience /workout. It is something you have to try for yourself and see if it works for you. This is the perfect studio to give it a tr. The studio is very clean and well kept. Staff was nice, welcoming, and helpful throughout the class. Only disadvantage was the location for me, it was slightly far away and lead to one class being a 3 hour commitment. Yet, I thoroughly recommend the class for beginners such as myself. It is a very enjoyable experience, just make sure you drink PLENTY of water as you will sweat like you never have before! read more
