What to say about Hot Wok... Not much, to be honest. The most interesting thing about it is how powerfully mediocre everything is. Is the food good? Suffice to say it isnt bad, but every flavor is like a watered down version of what you'd expect. If Asian food was a dive bar, it'd be Hot Wok. Service is rather non-existant, but that's what buffets are like, so that's to be expected. The overall ambiance is "American Buffet" meets "underachieving child of a disappointed Asian mother." Hot Wok offers dishes that offer fruit and veggies, BUT... they are NOT SANITARY. I recently purchased a to go meal that incorporated their vegetables and included the SPINACH CASSEROLE. I became very ill and experienced VIOLENT VOMITTING that was later diagnosed as CROSS CONTAMINATION by the ER. I have never been so sick before and it has cost me more than the overpriced meal. Went here after a trip to the Battle of New Orleans site. We were all tired of eating seafood the first day of our vacation, so we went here as a little bit of a break from that. As far this place goes, it's what you would expect from a Chinese-American buffet. They have rice, noodles, sushi, soup, stir fried dishes, a deep fried section, salad, dessert, fruit, etc. The taste on everything was decent, although some things like the fish filet and egg rolls were a bit cold and not very fresh. We came here for lunch, so I don't know if they were out of crawfish, oysters, etc. or if those are only for dinner. That being said, the waitress was very kind and had a long conversation with my mother. It was a pretty good deal as well. For lunch, it's around $45 for four people. Overall, I'd recommend this place for a quick bite for lunch, and maybe for special occasions for dinner. read more

Hot Wok is decent, but not great. The best, most fresh and healthy tasting item there would be the Mongolian grill in the back. The sushi in the back is also okay, nothing wowza. But before you see either of those things, what you notice is six long buffets with chafing tables inside of them and a recessed ceiling all neon-lit and colorful. One of the tables has mostly salad bar type stuff. Another has mostly fruit (ack, please peel the kiwi, right? Is it just me who'd expect the skin to be removed?). There are Chinese meat dishes and green mussels and some sort of octopus something-or-other and the full range of fried American and Chinese foods - egg rolls, shrimp (2 kinds), fish, fries, wontons, chicken nuggets, etc. There's also pizza, macaroni & cheese, noodles, boiled shrimp. And soup - egg drop, hot & sour, maybe another. The hot & sour soup is surprisingly edible. This is such a hard soup to nail, or so it'd seem based on how many terrible bowls of what-should-be-awesomeness I've had, so I give Hot Wok credit for making a hot & sour I actually eat every time I go there. The desserts are okay - more fun for the kids than actually tasty, the exceptions being the pudding and the ice cream. Still, Hot Wok is convenient, and you start eating as soon as you can fix up a plate, so it's a nice place to bring the kids. I'm sure I'll return soon. read more

I was here over the weekend for a family gathering. Because of our very big party, the owner gave us tickets to drop into a bucket as we entered the restaurant. This allowed the restaurant to count the number of people who were with the private party. It's a great idea! We pretty much took over the left side of the restaurant. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet so don't expect excellent table service and high quality food. The waitresses will come by to take your drink order and you help yourself to their buffet. If the waitresses don't come to you, you'll have to track them down and ask for your drink. I waited for them to get my drink at their server station since they were super busy tending to our very large group. As for the food itself, it's pretty much good across the board except for the fresh fruit. None of the fruit was sweet. They all look fresh, but none was sweet. The ice cream is served in individually sized containers so it helps if you don't like to scoop your own ice cream. Overall, it was a good buffet experience! read more

I've never been to a Chinese buffet in my life. In New York we just don't have that sort of thing. But here I was in New Orleans - my new home - desperate for Chinese food. Some friends brought us and as soon as I walked in the door and saw the Bruce Lee posters, I was sold. When I walked ten more feet and saw all those chafing dishes, I was floored. "But how do I pay? How do they know how much I eat?" I whispered "They don't care how much you eat. It's $11.99" my friend whispered back I was sure he was pulling my leg. By my third trip to the Jalapeno Chicken station I was sure a waiter was going to drag me out while I screamed "BUT IT SAYS 'ALL YOU CAN EAT!!!'" just like Homer Simpson. But no: I went for a fourth. It was very clean, and much fresher than I would have imagined. There are friendly waiters hovering everywhere to grab your plate so you can refill a new one. There are huge TVs so you can watch whatever sporting event happens to be on at the moment. The chafing dishes are shallow and they place is always busy so nothing sits in them for very long. That food is MOVING! If it's fried (which most of it is) you can bet it'll still be crispy. The hot stuff stays hot and the cold stuff stays cold. Is it the most authentic Chinese food ever? Certainly not. But it is pretty damn good and there's lots of non-Chinese items there (pizza, fried plantains, sushi, Mongolian stir-fry, macaroni & cheese and even peel & eat shrimp which weirdly lives in the same station as the pudding) so there's something for everyone. Lunch is an even bigger steal at $6.99. I recommend the jalapeno chicken, wok shrimp, plantains, crab rangoon, peanut chicken, peel & eat shrimp, sushi and the sauteed green beans. Fair warning: there are 48 chafing dishes at the Hot Wok and only two of them are vegetables! No really. It's true. Eat up! read more

Full disclosure: I'm not a buffet person and I find the entire idea of a buffet pretty gross. However, I was outvoted so I found myself here hoping for the best. This is a pretty typical Asian buffet- they have all of the traditional Chinese-American foods and they also have sushi rolls and boiled seafood like crawfish and shrimp. Buffets make me pretty nervous, so I kept my choices pretty basic. I got a couple of the veggie sushi rolls, crab rangoons, egg rolls and pot stickers. I basically stuck to stuff that I know came out of a package and had the least amount of human contact possible. Nothing stood out, but everything was good. One thing actually did like was the lobster au gratin which is basically lobster and a lot of cheese. I rolled the dice on that one, and lucky for me I survived the experience. This place "is what it is". Don't come here expecting anything spectacular, but come here expecting to stuff your face for about $17. read more

I'm a buffet person. I love eating the hibachi here. I normally have about 3 plates of noodles, crab meat, and shrimp and broccoli prepared spicy hot hibachi style. However, recently I have not been able to get that from here and to me , I haven't pleased with anything else. This place seems to do whatever they want. Lol. It's affordable as well. It's a buffet. It has sushi and lots of fresh entrees. Very clean, with excellent service. However, the sushi guy did not understand my "no fish" or "cucumber roll" order and so.... I unintentionally ate fish. The bar was pretty cool looking, but I don't think I will be returning. read more

I don't like buffets so my review may be biases. I've eaten here twice because 1) I went with my family & 2) my boyfriend wanted to try it since he couldn't go the first time I went. The decor is beautiful. I love the tier ceiling. The food was 'meh'. Hot Wok's selection of food is just about the same as anywhere else. I'm not sure what happened to this restaurant, the food used to be really good and there was good service and it was pretty cheat. It used to cost about 9-13 dollars a person depending on the time of the day and now it's 20 dollars a person. You only get one drink now that's in a bottle instead of when they used to bring you drinks with refills. Hot wok also used to be my favorite sushi place to go to where I could eat all my favorite rolls but now there's only about 6 rolls that barely stay together and taste disgusting. Real value for money. I have tried it a few times. Love Mangolian grill. And seafood is good. Also sushi bar is fairly good. I have visited over the weekend with friends and family and always found a good crowd there. Wait staff is pretty friendly. However they speak better English then my Chinese. Always trying to please. cool. I liked the relaxed atmosphere and a place where I can go in my jeans. But would not recommend on a first date. Lolz. It's no Five Happiness but they have a friendly staff and I've never been disappointed. Favorites include: sauteed green beans, boiled shrimp(dinner), grilled chicken skewers, grilled fish, peanut fried chicken(an indulgence), pretty fresh sushi, fried large calamari(lunch), spring rolls, creamed spinach, pepper fried shrimp, banana pudding, lots of fresh fruit and real ice cream. The waitress threw a spoon at my 1yr old daughter. I've visited this restaurant for years. Tonight, the food was horrible and so was the service. My son spilled a drink, the waitress wouldn't wait for us to move so she could clean it up. She picked up a spoon off the floor and forcefully put it on the table causing it to bounce and fly past my daughter's face. I asked for a refund ($80 for 8) and was refused. I called the Sheriff's office to press charges and was told I would also be arrested for my mouthy, profane reaction. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. 3.5/5 solid options. so i stumbled here after my very first venture into chalmette (is this chalmette?). i was hungry and had a slight craving for american-chinese, so i figured why not? the price was reasonable for what it was. bright spots for this place was that i felt there were more meat/entree items vs. fillers. some buffets will offer you so many "fillers" (rice, noodles, other not useful stuff), but this place offered me fish 3-ways, shrimp 4-ways, etc. so i felt for what i paid, i got value in that more of what i was eating was seafood rather than other stuff. it seems they have an awkward lunch vs. dinner pricing option, but if ever i get a bad craving for "chinese" this will be it! read more

The food is good, always hot, appears fresh. Service is excellent. The staff is always bringing hot fresh food to replenish the buffet. The food is very flavorful seasoned really well and always an abundance of anything you choose. A nice variety of choices. Especially like the sushi it is plentiful and taste fresh. If you tip the sushi guy he will make whatever you like. The restaurant is huge and at first glance appears to be clean. Why the low rating? They have a big problem. On my previous visit I was seated in the back dining room where I watched roaches playing on the wall I ignored them and asked to be re seated. The prices are so good and the food is so fresh I thought they would have addressed the issue and it would be rectified, It's New Orleans/chalmette and hot located near water so roaches can sometimes be seen but when I went this time with my mom and daughter I sat in a different room and looked down at my feet to see an entire family of roaches around our feet under the table. Now done! Never saw any around the food or on the buffet, but come on..They have to do something about this problem if bugs are all over the dining room they are surely in the food prep area.
