ZERO STARS FOR GIANNA! I had been a client of Gianna's at her previous salon for a couple years. When she moved to HotBox Salon, I was sure to follow her there. I had booked an appointment with her for a cut and platinum color. She texted me personally to make sure that was what I intended to schedule. I send her some photos of what I wanted and she said ok. On the day of my appointment, she texted one hour before my appointment and said she had to cancel because she wasn't feeling well. I was definitely bummed and kind of disappointed for the very late notice especially because this cut and color was going to be a big transformation for me, but I understood. She told me to reschedule the following week, which I did. I rescheduled it on my BIRTHDAY and she knew this. The day before my birthday/ appointment, she texted me again but this time, not only did she cancel my birthday appointment, but she dumped me completely as a client. She said I wasn't concerned enough about her health and that I implied my hair was more important than her health which was entirely not true. Gianna has been cutting my hair for about a decade and I would follow her wherever she went (it just so happens to be a perk that she came here)! I called last minute today and got scheduled with Josh at 3pm. I was a new client to this salon. I have not had great experience lately with salon services in the past years. I'm proud to say that I had a great experience here. Josh took care of me great. He gave me his input on two different haircuts I had in mind. I got 14 inches and 22 inches cut off my hair (for donation to Children with Hair Loss). With this, I got an undercut from above both ears, around to the nape, so like all around. This part is where the 22 inch section came from. What I would really like to say is that Angeleaque, the amazing woman who cut my hair, is such an amazing stylist , of course, but she is a beautiful human. Some background: while I am only 26, I have severe-profound hearing loss and I use hearing aids. I am almost always excluded from conversations in my everyday life and rarely get to have conversations with people in the wild. Angeleaque made sure I always understood her, and she made an effort to actually talk to me. She was so kind. It seems silly, like that is just normal, but even with hearing aids, I cannot understand things better, it just gets louder. I struggle to follow conversations, even if I can hear someone, I cannot always understand them. This is exasperated if I cannot see the speakers face/mouth. It is a very lonely and frustrating thing. This interaction made me I feel like an actual person. Angeleaque always included me and she looked at me when she talked to me and used hand gestures. It made me feel normal. And, I did not even have to ask her to do this; she did all this on her own without a second thought. Not even people i see every day make an effort to talk to me or make sure I am following the conversations. Most of the time no one even talks to me. I literally feel like a ghost. Angeleaque is easily the kindest human I have ever met and in an hour, she has left a big impact on me. She went above and beyond, both as a stylist and as a human. I've been coming to HOTBox for 3 years and just love it! Troy is my hairstylist and he always does the most amazing job. He also gives amazing scalp massages while washing your hair and conversations are always fun with him. Receptionists are always super duper friendly and they offer complimentary drinks (coffee, tea, water, sangria or beer). I also love the hip yet comfortable atmosphere with great music playing. Hotbox lives up to its reputation! This salon came highly recommended by a friend and it is worth it! Josh was my stylist today and he did a great job! It's so nice to find a salon where you are treated as a person and not an age. Josh took the time to listen to my wants and needs when it came to my hair. He looked at my hair and we came up with a plan. He executed the plan perfectly and I am very pleased with the results!! The salon itself is decorated super cute! It's stylish with an edge and extremely clean! It's my understanding the bathroom is super cool and has black toilets. I will have to look next time! The receptionist is so nice and friendly! I want to strongly urge anyone going to this salon to not use Tara LeMay, or @hairby_taralemay. It was the worst experience I've had in getting my hair done. But, what happened afterwards was even worse! The only reason why I am giving 3 stars and not 1 is because of how the owner, David, handled the situation after it was escalated to him. He offered to correct my hair for free. Still wasn't what I originally wanted, but at least I didn't look like an orange striped zebra. My stylist that I normally use was out on maternity leave, so I gave this salon a try. My hair is thick and down to my waist and always takes 4-5 hours. They scheduled my appointment for 5:20pm... When I first sat down, Tara explained that she had forgotten to eat that day and was so hungry - and it was very apparent that she rushed through my hair to get to some food. She didn't even spend a full 3 hours on it. I showed her a picture, and told her I didn't like any warm, brassy, or copper tones... She seemed like she understood and I felt good about that... then she took the towel off after washing and I was heartbroken to see my hair looking like I did it at home myself and looked completely amateur hour. I specifically asked for the smudge/melt, and thought she would do that later, but she never did. Then, she talked crappy about her family and coworkers the entire time. As her coworker was leaving, Tara asked her to close down and shut off lights/music. Her coworker said it would make it awkward, but Tara insisted she didn't know how and for her to just do it, then looked at me and said "she just fu$&!ing never shuts her mouth!!!" (Fast forward, I stayed a little after to help Tara close up and shut out lights/lock up because she was scared to be alone).... I wasn't even bothered to do that, until how she treated me after I was so kind to her. I was just sitting there awkward and annoyed just ready to leave. The next day, I messaged Tara and told her how unhappy I was with my hair. She said "I can't help how your hair reacted to my formula!" Like this was my fault... she offered to fix it but then said "I can't make any promises that I'm going to be able to make you happy"... She also said that she could fix it, but because I have so much hair, it would be best if I left with wet hair!!! Obviously at this point I didn't want her touching my hair again. I told her that she was rude and unprofessional and that I would be escalating the situation. Her response? "Well if you're wanting to talk to the manager, I'm my own boss, soooo..." I could not believe it. Just look at the pictures of what I asked for, compared to what I received. I called the salon the next day and they were extremely kind and so apologetic after hearing how terrible and unprofessional Tara was. They immediately offered to have the owner, David, fix my hair. He was extremely professional and did what he could to fix the striping issue, by adding dark color to the top and melting it down. Because of how Tara originally did it, I still wasn't walking away with what I had asked for, but I was okay with it because of the great customer service given by David. Did I mention that when I called to schedule, they quoted me about 190.... after all was said and done, and after tipping David for the free correction, I paid 300.00!!!! I can't express it enough... if you do use this salon, do NOT book with Tara LeMay! Her portfolio looked great, but if you happen to catch her on a bad day, when she's hungry and hasn't eaten, she will just rush through and not pay attention to detail. Your hair is not worth that gamble. read more

My husband and I have been coming to hotbox salon for a few years now. Josh has been cutting my husbands hair on a monthly basis and he's always doing a fantastic job. He's consistent and always flexible with last minute appointments. The salon itself is clean, spacious and has a cute decor. They offer a variety of drinks even alcoholic. Every front desk receptionist so far has been super nice. All hairstylists rent their chair, so they all charge different prices but it's reasonable. Unfortunately, I'm not a customer anymore. I was a Client of Jaquie for a few years but last year all of a sudden; she kept either canceling or changing my appointments last minute. This situation was frustrating; since this was going on for like 2-3 months; after asking her why she keeps changing/ canceling my appointments; she stated it's time for me to look for a new stylist. So if you are in need for "just" a haircut don't even bother making an appointment with her; you will be disappointed! When she had a good day my haircut looked fine but when she had a bad day it was a different story. I still decided to stay with her because she had more good than bad days. I strongly believe, that because I did not continue with extensions; since my work doesn't allow it and I never did color since I don't need it; I wasn't a good enough client; though her price for a regular hair cut is pricey. I'm happy I found Tara before she left hotbox to open up her own studio. The only reason I'm giving 5 stars is because of josh and the fact that hotbox itself can't control the behavior of the stylists renting their chairs! read more

I bought a $65 Groupon for Hotbox Salon, which included a solid color, haircut, and style. Hotbox salon has rave reviews on Yelp and had a 91% approval rate from customers who used a Groupon here. Choosing Hotbox Salon to get my hair done was a no brainer, really. Upon walking in, there wasn't a receptionist at the front desk which I found to be a little odd. The limited seating area available was full, so I stood and waited to be greeted. About 3 minutes in, the receptionist finally walks up and takes my info. She asks what I'd like to drink, and it turns out they have your usual coffee, tea, and soda...as well as sangria and beer?? I'll take the beer! The only beer they had is Miller Light, but who cares it's free beer! Matthew was my stylist. I told him I wanted black hair and a trim, and that's exactly what I got. Dyeing your hair black can be tricky, especially when it comes to the hairline. Matthew applied the black dye in expert fashion and I was impressed (I'm used to having tell-tale blocks from the brush being applied haphazardly around the hairline). I still got my ears dyed a little, but there's really no avoiding that - unless you slather your ears in vaseline first lol. I'm really anal about my bangs, but he was patient with me and cut them how I wanted. The trim was great and I really liked the way he styled my hair. Gentleness wise, he was average. I like being babied when it comes to getting my hair done. Personality wise, Matthew was pretty quiet throughout the duration of my visit. I don't mind though, a stylist can be super chatty or quiet and I'll be content either way. I was knee deep on Reddit any how :P The salon itself was trendy and had a surprising amount of dudes inside getting their hair cut. The music playing was mostly chill reggae, and everything was really clean. I'm not sure if I'll make Hotbox my designated salon of choice yet, but it's definitely a contender!
