Since Halloween was on a Saturday this year I wanted to go to the Village Parade with the husband. He suggested that we stay in the city rather than leave early and deal with NJ Transit. We used Kayak to browse hotels in the area and prices were all above $300. We found Hotel 17 on Kayak for $185, including ALL taxes and fees. Both Kayak and Orbitz show a two star rating, but Yelpers show a solid four stars. We trust Yelpers a bit more so we booked. We have stayed in similar hotels in the city before and knew what to expect. The room was nice and clean, and perfect for what we needed. Coffee pot, AC, TV, and a sink area to freshen up in. The full size bed was good enough, a little beat and uncomfortable, but doable for one night's sleep. Noise from other rooms was minimal if any and we didn't wait to use the shared bathroom, which was also very clean. Our friends who also stayed with us booked direct with the hotel. This is good to know as the hotel site has specials that can be cheaper than online travel sites. 3 stars. Update: Since starting this draft, we stayed here again. This time in December for a night out in NYC for my birthday. Husband used Kayak again and this time we had a much larger and nicer room. We had more space and the bed was way more comfortable. This bumps up our review from 3 to 4 stars. For the price, it's a great stay if you're looking just to crash in the room after a night out. I wouldn't recommend for an extended stay (maybe if you're staying from overseas and need something more affordable than the standard mainstream hotels) but it's perfect for what we needed a room for -- a place to crash after a great night out in NYC. We promptly left the next morning for brunch so we pretty much just slept at the hotel. Hotel staff are courteous and when our heat wasn't on, the front desk man sent someone up immediately to check the situation. He put on the heat and was out of our way in no time. Interesting place. The decor is tacky in the bedrooms, but my room was exceptionally clean. The bathroom was very clean as well, and they are shared. The location is great and the staff takes requests and takes care of said requests quickly. My big complaint is that the first night there was no heat in my room. Go figure. The second night there was - probably because I requested an extra blanket. It was as if I had assumed it's an old place and the heat doesn't work well. Well, I froze my ass off that first night...but that was rectified the following night. My room was a fine size and the location was good (I'm just over sharing bathrooms, frankly, but as I said, they were clean). My other complaint is that the walls are thin. There was a shared room next to my private room and the women were really loud at all hours of the day and night. Very frustrating - so bring ear plugs. Street sound was minimal/next to nothing. Overall, a nice, clean and affordable way to stay in a cool area of town. I probably won't do it again (as I'm more of a private bathroom type now-a-days), but, it's a great place for travelers looking for clean affordability in a cool area of NYC. read more

I have stayed in this hotel only once. Why? Priceline sent me here. for $120 a night and I guess I picked the east village or gramercy as an option. It has a nice look from the outside. That is where the fun stops. The shared washrooms is a bit much. I wont be back. If you are a business traveler dont stay here because wifi is bad, cell phone reception is bad...but if you decide to tough it out for some reason only known to you, know that there is a starbucks around here somewhere and a Barns and Noble with like 3-4 floors with a cafe area of great size should you need to stretch your wings and maybe get on your laptop for a a few minutes or an hour or so read more

Pleasantly surprised by Hotel 17. Needed a place to stay near Webster Hall, and this was the cheapest around. Figured it would be a dump, but far from it. Perhaps cleaner than most chain hotels I've stayed in. Had a unique New York charm. Feels like it's 100 years old, but I got the sense that I traveled back in time to this place when it was new, not something weathered by a century of use. The rooms and hallways are indeed small if you're used to American hotels/motels, but the room with two twin beds provided plenty of room for 2 people. Wifi and TV were sufficient, nothing to brag about. Plenty of soap provided, and a nice big (kitchen-sized) sink in the room. In-window air and radiator heat. There are two bathrooms that are outside the bedrooms and are shared among all the guests on the floor. Never had an issue with availability, and facilities exceeded my cleanliness standards. Location was excellent, staff was very helpful. I had to ship some large equipment to/from NYC for a demo for my business, and they were glad to store it for me, and ensured that it was shipped back to me the day after I left. I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to any of my friends (and strangers) who read this. Note: the "inexpensive" designation is for Manhattan. Elsewhere, this might have been overpriced, but rates here were 30% lower than a nearby Holiday Inn, without sacrificing quality. read more

Great affordable NYC hotel. Mind you the rooms are small, but clean. Bathrooms are communal, and are down the hall. I found that if one is occupied, you can easily find another in an an adjacent hallway. Excellent location in beautiful Gramercy Park near Union Square( which features the best outdoor market I've been to). Trader Joes, Whole foods nearby; as well many options for dining and drinking. . Heard that Madonna stayed here(before she was a superstar), and that Woody Allen filmed Manhattan Murder Mystery here. Staff is friendly and accommodating. read more

Cheap, clean, and easy to get to. There's no way I'm paying $300 for a place to sleep so the $99 single rate did me just fine. The room was small with a twin bed, a small desk, a sink, and a tv shelf/closet/armiore type thing. I had a view of a brick wall through the little window. The shared bathrooms were clean and there was plenty of hot water for a shower. Overall, a pleasant stay and since all I needed was a place to lay my head it filled my needs perfectly. read more

My husband found a deal for one night at this weird, charming little place. We came up to NYC for 24 hours to see a friend of ours perform with his new band. We arrived at about 7am and were greeted by the morning desk guy who informed us that they are very strict about their check in time. He said we were welcome to leave our bags with him so we could explore the city until check in time. This place is located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood and can be easily missed as it looks like a large brownstone. After 3 we were able to check in to our room. You know those old black and white detective movies where you watch the PI go from rolling out of bed directly to an in room sink to shave with the silhouette of a fire escape in the window behind him? Well that's what these rooms looked like. Noir. We had a full and a single bed nicely fit into a small room with a large dark wood entertainment center/coffee stand/safe/vanity with a small pedestal sink and mirror next to it. The shower/tub and toilet were located a few doors down the hall and shared with the rest of the guests in our hall. That part kind of weirded me personally out but it was one night and both the room and bathroom were clean. The halls and old portal door elevator reminded me of the Hotel season of American Horror Story. Complete with a couple floors of people who actually live there. No vampire sightings though. The walls between rooms were thin, but I felt like the walls between the rooms (including the bathroom) and the hall were thinner. I would absolutely stay one or 2 nights here again, though I heard they may be closing. read more

Stayed here for a night with a friend last week, and I would definitely stay there again! I came in expecting a small closet of a room, and it just being a place to leave my stuff and sleep. To my surprise, the room was quite roomy with its own sink, a *nonfunctional* fireplace, and two small bay windows, both with spectacular views. It's also in a pretty nice area that was convenient and peaceful. I would definitely stay here again if given the chance. My only complaint is that it would be nice if they had some hand soap in the communal bathrooms. read more

This was such a great place to stay for a last minute trip to New York during Christmas season! The location was right near Union Square. You are within walking distance of the subway, plenty of restaurants, bars and stores. I had read on previous reviews not to worry at all about the shared bathrooms, we stayed here for 4 days and the bathrooms were almost always available, hot water, cleaned multiple times a day and shared by only a couple of rooms...this was no issue whatsoever. Rooms did have a private sink and mirrors as well. I'm so glad I listened! The front desk was always helpful, the room was always warm and the entire building has tons of character. I heard that Woody Allen filmed Manhattan Murder Mystery here which makes perfect sense. Rooms are quaint and just what you need. I would definitely stay here again! read more

I love this spot. Have stayed here many, many times over the years. But you have to be down for the specific experience. It's a very old hotel, NY rooming house style. I have stayed in many different rooms, some better than others. 90% of the time the shared bathrooms have been clean during my stays and I have never experienced difficulty with access. I really appreciate that it's been mostly European guests I have encountered during my stays. Typically, they have been quiet and courteous, as it should be. My rooms have always been clean and well maintained, but again, it's quite old so don't expect that it's been updated or it's a modern hotel. Know what you are signing up for. Seems to now only take extended stays, that's a bummer, it was my go to for inexpensive accommodation in NYC for so many years and I am not usually in need of a 30 day stay. read more

It did the trick. The room was more pleasant than I anticipated, especially after being cautioned about the horrors of Manhattan hotel rooms, clean, and located close to Union Square. And most importantly, it was available on short notice and inexpensive. That's about it. The stairs were closed (seriously?) between floors 2 and 3, so we were forced into the elevator, which was (of course) slow, small, and regularly delayed by confused people trying to maneuver too much baggage. The free wi-fi kept wandering on and off, confirming the principle that you get what you pay for. The desk staff were competent but chilly. And of course the bathroom is in the hallway (and not stocked with soap, making me wonder who washed their hands). read more

Room 215 is haunted, this hotel is great everything is great, it has everything you need while being cozy. It's a very nice area, and has everything you need from night life or places to see and very nice restaurants, Room 215 is haunted. The only weird thing was at night we heard noises in our room. It sounded like someone was buried alive in the concrete and was trying to break through the concrete with a crow bar. At first I thought it had to be something on the building, but I went outside and nothing. I looked all over and saw nothing, so I just assumed maybe it was a trapped animal. Maybe it would go away, and it did but at night I felt like it would always start again, but then when I started thinking about it, the sound started again. I've stayed at this hotel a lot. I'm actually surprised I've never checked in yelp here until now. Book online and you can get this place for $100/night. It's very European. Rooms are small and the bathrooms are shared and I mean they're out in the hallway so you have to leave your room-don't forget your key! But for the location, $100/night is stupid good. TV channels are possibly the oddest I've ever seen for a hotel. Mostly cable channels no one watches and only 3 major networks. No came news channels at all. But I don't come for TV. read more

I love NYC hotels that are under $200 a night. I don't care about shared bathrooms as long as they are clean (they were so clean). The front desk staff was crazy nice and charming. One thing I would like to point out is how great the housekeeping staff is. Not only is everything kept very clean but later on a Tuesday AM I stumbled out of my room (which had 2 doors) and locked myself out since I exited through the door we had no key for. The staff was so nice and didn't once give me a "stupid hungover white girl" look (totally justified since I was 4 of 5). Later after coming back from eating I thanked them properly, they giggled at me and made sure I knew it was no problem. Check in/out was smooth and easy. As mentioned they will hold your luggage if you need them too. Close to the subway and an easy walk to pretty much anywhere you may need to go. I will be visiting again. Thanks Hotel 17! read more

I actually love this place. Only in NYC would a place like this be considered good. It has an amazing old New York charm to it. The rooms and bathrooms are always surprisingly clean. This is one of the cheapest non-hostel lodging options in NYC. The central NYC location is amazing, plenty of nightlife, restaurants and shops everywhere. You get a sink, cable tv and a hair dryer in your room. The showers and toilets are shared by your whole floor though, like in dorms, which is the biggest con about this place. But they are always clean, there aren't all that many rooms per floor and I've never had a problem, so I can't complain too much. Every room in the place is different, as this is not a cookie-cutter corporate chain hotel, so I'm always pleasantly surprised by something, whether it be the size, the big bed or the good view from my room. Great for staying by yourself on a tight budget. Only recommended for couples if you are young and "roughing" it. If you want room service and luxury, look elsewhere. The elevator is TINY and has a fun little porthole to look out of. It's pretty slow so I usually take the stairs. The unofficial rooftop "lounge" which has some nice views is a great place to enjoy a smoke and a swig from your flask before you head out for the night. Very New York. read more

I was recommended this place by one of my best friends, so I had a realistic grasp of what this place would be like. What I had not anticipated was the appalling service we received from the staff. When we checked in, because there was a leak in the room we had booked (which cost more because we were three and we had specified that we were), we were told that we would have to stay in a smaller room. But they were going to bring an extra bed for no extra charge. There was no 'I'm so sorry that this has happened, but of course we will do this straight away for you'. Just ...silence. Oh, and passport. I'm sorry, excuse me? Your passport? Oh right... no please there then. When the extra bed was brought up, it looked like it had been stored in a basement for about 20 years. The sheets that were on it were not fresh but dusty and there was no pillow. The guy just dumped the bed there and we had to shift the furniture around the tiny room to get it to fit somewhat. When we went down to complain about the service and the room, there were just blank stares and no apology. When we were told that we were moving to another room, the type that we had PAID for, again, they had to move our things for us and not once in the time that we dealt with any member of staff were there any manners involved. Last year I stayed in a really hideous hostel, but at the very least they were able to use the words please and thank you. The only thing I can begrudgingly give this place is that the bathrooms were very clean. But the rooms were tiny and cramped (yes, I know it's New York) and the staff were appalling. I had read reviews online about this hotel and I knew what to expect: Small room, shared but clean bathroom and affordable (only to other Manhatten hotels) prices. However, on my way to NY I received a message from my friend who had just checked in: OMG wait till you see our room she said; this is going to be interesting. And so I arrived not really sure what I am going to see, but yes this room was definitely tiny: and we both shared a full size bed. The heater was definitely put waaaay high and so it got really warm inside. But aside from that the bathroom was always clean. Would definitely be willing to stay there again in the area; it's close to a lot of subway lines. I just wish the receptionist that checked me in had been a bit friendlier. read more

Wow, what a deal! I booked far in advance and got a room w/a private bath. Sure, it was nothing luxurious, but I didn't go to NY to spend all day in a hotel room. The Gramercy location was divine. Walking around, I felt like I was in a Woody Allen movie. (The only thing missing was Tony Roberts!) And there were tons of places to eat, drink, and shop, all within spitting distance. The place loses a star only because our maid had attitude. We put the "please clean room" sign right when we left at 9:30 one morning, and our room had not been cleaned when we returned at 3:30 pm. We saw her and asked that she come back around 5 to clean since we needed to rest up. She came back at 5:10 and was pissy that we hadn't vacated the room yet. Not the end of the world, but definitely put a slight damper on things. The guy at the front desk more than made up for that experience. He was always very friendly and helpful. It's been a couple of years since I chanced upon Hotel 17. When I stayed here in 2008 it was eerie as hell, all narrow corridors and ominous backlighting in the hallways. That's precisely why I loved it. Don't ask me what it is, but there's something about staying here that screams "This is New York." ~Of course, NYC is a lot of things to a lot of people, but the building and general experience I had staying here was how I'd pictured staying in New York was gonna be like. The staff were friendly enough, clean rooms, TV, cheap rates for central Manhattan. The only downside for me were the communal showers and restrooms, but that might've just been my room that didn't have a toilet. Overall, it served its purpose. I was out every waking minute of the day and just wanted a decent bed to return to. I didn't get bed and board, so the bed sufficed. Hotel 17 saw me through until another day of exploring, even though my room reminded me a little of the movie "1408". We had a brick wall directly opposite our window which inexplicably terrified me (if you've seen the movie, you'll know). There was also a creepy rambling guy that used to talk to himself in the room next door, but I'm sure he's not a regular and just my bad luck since I appear to be a weirdo magnet. Overall, it had a strange, haunted, ye olde NYC 40s charm to it, and I liked it. read more

Picture it. Summer, 1992. I was 18 years old, just out of high school and traveling cross country selling beads. Yeah, beads. Like at powwows and rendezvous. It was actually pretty good money. We stayed with my business partners' tranny/nightclub performer (at Webster Hall) sister who lived here. I remember it being quiet, clean and ultra cool. We thought we were rock stars. Later in the trip we had dinner with a skinny, pretty black guy who said that he was a Mapplethorpe model in the 70's. "I was the one with the bullswhip up my ass!", he proclaimed as I ate my steak. I forget where we were eating, but that is another story for another time. The next morning, the lady who lived there moved down the street into a one room basement apartment. I was bummed. We helped her paint the walls gold lame and I remember thinking I was going to asphyxiate from the fumes. If I was going to die in NYC, I wanted to die at the rock star hotel. I have a goal to stay here the next time I am in NYC. Hopefully it'll be as cool as I remember it, but with less bullwhip stories.. read more

I chose to stay here because it was in Manhattan, I was a solo traveler, and it fit my budget. Location: awesome. Quiet area, within walking of a few subway stations, plenty of cool little restaurants in the neighborhood. Price: Can't beat $115/night in Manhattan. Room: Old-school NYC. Small, but not as small as I thought it would be. Dim lighting. High ceiling. Tiny TV with limited channels. ** Warning: Not all rooms have sinks. I didn't have one. (I didn't have a hair dryer, either, but I didn't need it.) I asked about moving to a different room, and I was told to check the next day to see if any open up. However, since my room was on the second floor, I chose to keep it. I didn't have to take that tiny, scary-looking elevator. I made do with the sink in the bathroom. Shared bathrooms: Always clean. There was a wait in the mornings, but afterward they were fine. The showers are a tub/shower combo. Even though they were clean, I wasn't about to take a bath. Wifi: Unreliable. Stuck with my phone's 3G service. Tips: Buy a gallon of drinking water for your room, especially if you don't have an in-room sink. There's an ice machine on the first floor. They'll hold your bags after you check out, and call for a car if you need one. Overall: I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't come back here with my husband- he's more of the upscale chain hotel type- but if I was coming back alone, or with a friend, I'd definitely stay here again. read more

Wish it was just a bit cheaper! Overall, it is a "CLEAN" place. I had a single room with shared baths, and the baths were clean usually. However, they did NOT have a HAIR DRYER in the room different from their advertisement. What is worse was when I asked the receptionist, there was none available!!!! ARE YOU JOKING? I asked a cleaning guy if he could get me one if he happened to find one in another room and he did. That was one of the few complaints I had about the hotel. Honest expectations: this whole place is built for efficiency. The rooms are tiny, the bathrooms are shared on each floor, and the wi-fi is a joke. BUT, it's cheap, clean, fairly nice, and the location is simply awesome, right next to Union Square with easy access to anywhere in NYC. The bathrooms are shared, one toilet/shower room and one toilet room per half a floor. So a dozen rooms or so per shower. It's a little more public than I'm used to in a hotel, but we never had any trouble getting a bathroom (or hot water) when we needed it, even on a busy weekend like SantaCon. There is a nice little sink/mirror setup in most rooms, so you're not completely dependent on the bathrooms. The wi-fi... Well, it's just sad. I wouldn't even bother with it (at least not from the 3rd floor). But then, this isn't the kind of room you get, if you're looking to stay in your room. Just hit one of the four Starbuck's a block or two away ;) Still, it was what we needed, under budget, with good service and nothing serious to complain about! read more

I was in the market for a clean, quiet bargain hotel where I'd have the opportunity to meet other friendly NYC visitors. That's exactly what I found! The room was small, old, but very clean. Similar hotels I looked at, reviewers complained about noise levels. Hotel 17 was very quiet. I found the dark intimate lighting in the halls and elevator to be sleezy, but amusing. On my last night, I met a really nice couple and their adult children on the elevator and accepted their candid invite to join them for dessert pizza. (if you're reading this, thank you!) The room was small, and there were 2 bathrooms per hall. Loved the plaid paper, but could hear through the walls. Okay, here is why I love this place: cheap clean madonna filmed something here in the 90's air conditioning great DAY front desk staff, night staff was indifferent cheap convenient great location (near union sq subway) small room= everything is reachable from the bed = lazy me on vacation can grab the phone, ac, remote for tv without moving many muscles and certainly not having to walk. good view from my room i had a shared bathroom room but the bathroom is really closeby and i did not mind that to save money. a friend who visited me there said it was "european-style" which was a euphemism for "teeny, tiny-a%% room" and im okay with that. read more

The manager of Hotel 17, James, was very unprofessional. While trying to sort my stay there, he raised his voice at me and questioned my intentions for staying at the hotel. What kind of manager does that?! Requesting new manager, PLEASE. This ruined my trip in New York because i feared getting yelled at every time i walked to my room. In addition to the rude manager, the bathrooms are shared. Your room only has a sink, no toilet and no shower. The bed is loud and creaky. Everytime I turn in bed, the bed creaks. It is also a horrible insulator so i wake up feeling damp and sweaty. Im not a large girl so this was surprising to me. The room also has no ventilation. It has an ac unit in there but turning that on made my nose feel so dry that I kept getting nose bleeds. Move onto the next one. If you decide to stay here, good luck. read more

I made the mistake of reserving a room meant for three people (one double bed, one single) but showed up with four. We checked in around 11pm on a Friday and even then our room was upgraded to a four person room (two double beds) with no hassle. Very close to Union Square in a great neighborhood that's lively yet isn't noisy. Walking distance to many great restaurants, bars, and a major subway interchange between three lines. The bathrooms are shared - ours was across the hall from our room. This was never a problem though. It was always clean and almost always available. I don't think we were sharing the bathroom with more than one other room. When we asked for help to take our checked in bags out to the car, we ended up having to do it ourselves. read more

I could have sworn I gave this hotel 5 stars last time i was here...Oh wait.....This is not hotel 31 This is Hotel17....not as great as their sister hotel on 31 street but the same features are there. This is a beautiful quaint hotel. Lots of old world charm. Rooms are cozy but have no heat control. Its on or off. Nice sink in the room to wash up a bit but if you wanna shower you are sharing with your fellow guests. Its a private bathroom like you would find in your home but half of the people on your floor share it. I had little interaction with the hotel staff but they dont seem to look you in the face and check in was a lengthy process i thought. Overall a nice hotel but i would not stay here again as i like to have a little more privacy when using the bathroom facilities at any place. read more

For the cost, the location and the decor, I don't believe any other "classic old style new york" hotel exists. I didn't even mind shared bathroom privileges with the other tenants - the bathrooms were clean and always one available when I needed it. For its location - this place is crazy reasonable. Also, it isn't trying to be anything that isn't as advertised. Cheap. Great location. Cheesy (creepy old school) wallpaper, narrow rooms, shared bathrooms, CA Adventure Tower of Terror decor, old school air conditioner, small towels, toiletries included, small alarm clock, small TV, basic cable on the TV, late check-in time, early check-out time...but clean and available for last minute pinches. Wouldn't stay here again, but if you're in a pinch and don't want to pay $500 a night -- this place works for a clean place to pass out. 4 stars for being surprisingly clean, honest, and crazy cheap. read more

Communal, shared bathrooms. Yes they do "clean" it frequently if you consider just changing the bathmat and rinsing the tub off with water cleaning. Lift the waterslip resistant mat in the tub and you'll see that the it has been quite a while since the tub got a good scrubbing. Also some of the curtains in the shower (4th floor, A side larger bathroom) have mold on them. Shower I used the tub does not drain and you're standing in pool of dirty water by the end(5th floor, B side). I think they should providesome liquid soap and paper towels in the communal bathroom. It's pretty cumbersome to have to carry your own soap and towel everytime you go to use the restroom. It is a well price hotel in a great location of NYC. I would have given it 3 stars and may have considered returning if the bathrooms really were better maintained. read more
