I loved staying here even though it was for one night. The gentlemen at the front desk was really accommodating and even able to check us in early. 2hrs early. Definitely a plus for my girls and I! The room was lovely. The bedding was just right for me. I didn't care so much for the ac there was fresh air and breeze coming through the window. We checked out the next morning to attend SF Pride and had to make a pit stop here a couple of time to use their restroom without restrictions which I thought was nice. When men were men, women were women, and the best killers were in Alfred Hitchcock films. And of course Hotel Vertigo is named after the classic, Vertigo, starring Kim Novak & Jimmy Stewart. One of my favorites! I've stayed at Hotel Vertigo a couple times and it was always a pleasant experience. And I'm not being cynical in a psychological thriller sorta way. I really enjoyed my stays and here's why... Location: Vertigo is located in the heart of lower Nob Hill on Sutter St. Blocks to Union Square & public transportation. Just be aware of the seedy corners, men in trench coats and compression shorts. Value: Overall a good value for the budget conscious traveler. Book online for the best deals possible. History: Historians may recognize the architecture as Edwardian of the early part of the previous century. Movie buffs will associate it as "Empire Hotel" with "Judy Barton" (Kim Novak) who lived in the hotel during the last half of the classic Hitchcock film. Variables: If you like boutique style hotels, or that euro-charm you'll enjoy your time here. Just be aware that no air conditioning (really not needed) and a very slow elevator, but who's in a rush in the 21st century, right? Some rooms are named after characters in the film - the "Scottie" suite, the "Madeleine" suite, etc. I actually stayed in Kim Novak's room, but hush I won't tell which one unless I truly like you. *secret, secret* Vertigo is played non-stop in the lobby too, so if you're a Hitchcock fan, or just appreciate days of yesteryear you'll be hooked. Again it's rickety charming, but probably not for everyone. Finally, I would recommend Hotel Vertigo to (almost) everyone I know. About 10 years ago the entire hotel went though renovation, yet they managed to keep the vintage charm intact while including a more modern look. The Architecture is still old "Hitchcock", but the sheets, the amenities, the furniture all modernized... in a good, fresh way. I honestly can't wait to visit Kim Novak again, circa 1957 /sigh. Oh, those eyebrows! It is rumored she still visits Hotel Vertigo incognito in floppy hat and oversized shades, and yes, she's very much alive and well! Hotel Vertigo is located in the Sutter St. There are so many good restaurants near here. Excellent location! Good price with this place to stay a night in SF. The hotel staffs were very nice and helpful. The room is cozy and well maintained. I was so surprised to see their welcome gift on the table. So Sweet!! They put the famous chocolate of SF in it. If you're looking for an affordable, older, no-frills hotel in the downtown area, Hotel Vertigo is a perfect candidate. If you're under the impression that this place has anything to do with the iconic SF Hitchcock film, you'll be disappointed. As someone who has spent many a night in many a hotel in the heart of the city, I've developed a checklist of the basic amenities that make a stay worth it, or that justify the sometime exorbitant prices for even the shadiest of the bunch. Hotel Vertigo fell somewhere in the middle. First, the good: The bed was comfy, the water pressure great. The service was exceptional, from the sweet front desk gal who walked me through everything about the place and offered to take my bags in the back while I explored the city, to the manager who personally came up to make sure the TV was working in my room. Now the bad: Electrical outlets were almost impossible to find or buried behind the bed. There didn't seem to be any sort of heating/cooling unit, just an old grate in the wall that loudly blew air. I used this to cover up the noise from neighboring rooms, which leads me to another criticism - thin walls. Most annoying was some sort of motion sensor light in the doorway which was just close enough to my bed so as to come on at random throughout the night. And back to that Vertigo theme - Besides them playing the movie on loop at a TV behind the front counter and a stairwell that kind of sort of resembles the stairwell from the movie (which was actually in a church tower in a different town, not a hotel), I didn't see much. I give them props for at least repping and honoring the film that helped make this town famous. Overall, Hotel Vertigo is a good budget hotel that's particularly pleasing to those who are budget travelers. They won't have everything you're looking for, but in San Francisco, everything you're looking for costs way too much. read more

I really enjoyed the stay here at Hotel Vertigo! It was very nice, clean and had all we needed. Perfectly located in between late night pizza spots, stop shops, breakfast/pastry and coffee joints literally every corner. However I do not like the fact the assigned parking lot was full. But we did get lucky to find parking else where for $30 overnight. Staff was very polite! Price was also right! We've payed up to $200 a night at other hotels that weren't any better than here! We booked a stay for 3 nights at Hotel Vertigo and could not have been happier with the price and room. We prepaid on Expedia with a great price and $25 off coupon. Check-in is at 3 pm but we checked in around noon without issue since they had a room available for us on the 4th floor. I asked for a room away from the elevator and they gave us one that was around the corner with windows facing the inner courtyard. I'm glad we weren't facing the street because street noise in SF can be loud. Our hotel was far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Union Square but close enough to walk to. My only gripe is walking through the Tenderloin from the Civic Center BART station. It can be sketchy but for the most part, people leave you alone. I may consider taking the bus next time for that short walk uphill. Our room consisted of a queen sized bed, desk, refrigerator, flat screen TV, 2 phones, free wifi, iPod clock dock (30 pin connector), horse head lamps, ceiling fan, safe, iron & ironing board, hair dryer, walk-in closet, 2 fluffy robes, and Bathé toiletries. For the most part our side of the hotel was quiet. You can hear the doors slam at random hours but we didn't hear anyone next door or above us. We did hear the water running in the pipes but that's normal for old hotels like this one. The windows don't have screens but we didn't have any issues with flying insects. There is no air conditioning and it is cold here most of the year so they don't usually need it. Cool fact: Hitchcock's Vertigo was partially filmed here. The movie can be seen on constant loop behind the reception desk. This hotel was built in the early 1900s and survived the Great SF Quake of 1906. They offer complimentary coffee and tea in the morning before 9:30 am and complimentary wine from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The bottled water in the rooms are NOT complimentary. We just walked to a nearby grocery store and bought a gallon of water to use in refillable bottles instead. They also offer a small selection of snacks and drinks in the room for sale. We didn't bother to partake in those. They also offer an airport shuttle for $15/person. We opted to take the BART back for $8.65/person instead. They were kind enough to securely store our luggage until it was time to leave for our flight. read more

Located walking distance to many bars and restaurants. Union Square and Chinatown a few blocks more away. Excellent customer service from Sam. He was pleasant and informative and friendly. No temperature control in room other than a ceiling fan and window. VERY THIN WALLS. We were lucky guests in rooms next to us were quiet, but you can still hear a lot. I made the mistake of booking a Deluxe King room. It had a street view, and the room was clean. I asked if we could change to a room with 2 beds, my guest and I were not sharing one. They had a double double room available, however that room was considered an "upgrade" and they applied that fee at the end of my stay. The room was definitely not an "upgrade" but I accepted it as a room change "fee". The room was not as clean and faced the middle of the hotel that faces all the other rooms facing the small center courtyard. We were unable to use any natural light as our privacy would be restricted if we pulled the blinds. There was not sufficient lighting, even with two lamps and two other room lights on. The linens and towels were all fresh and clean. The best thing about the room change was we were on the second floor instead of 6, and could use the stairwells instead of waiting for the one (very slow) elevator. read more

Cute, but with caveats. Let's get the important stuff out of the way: this place has NO AIR CONDITIONING. Not a problem many days, but I got a 90+ F room during my stay. The renovations do wonders, but this place is also old, so expect some additional caveats: a slow elevator, rough/small bathrooms, and an overall vintage experience. The reason to go here is the history. As the other reviews may indicate, this place is famous because of the movie Vertigo, so it's a fun stay on that basis alone. Beyond the sweltering heat (again, not something that'd normally be an issue), my room was modern, comfortable, and pretty quiet. The staff were amazingly pleasant as well. I enjoyed my one night stay at this cute hotel. The bed was comfy and it was close to the venue that I was attending that night. The hotel was clean. The front desk attendants were friendly and upgraded us to a bigger room when asked to. Close to lots of restaurants, bars, a well stocked neighborhood bodega, and just a few blocks from a reasonably priced overnight and secure parking garage. Happened to take a day trip to San Fran and was too tired to head back south. Was accommodated by the Vertigo hotel for a last minute reservation. The receptionist was very friendly and gave great customer service. The room had a window view that I really appreciated for that authentic San Francisco experience. After parking my car for the night, I was concerned about dinner but found the pizza shop a few doors down and a bodega across the street at the corner. The room was clean which is my biggest concern when staying in hotels. Although an older property, I didn't not feel like I was suffering with a lack of cleanliness. After a visiting San Francisco a couple of times, I have learned to expect to overpay for what I am getting. Hotels in this area in the 130-170 range were mostly boutique hotels that seem more lived in and have...character. Not what I personally look for in a hotel so I wanted to find a reasonably priced hotel with the least amount of "character." I found that Hotel Vertigo fit the bill. Hotel summary: I was surprised to find that the hotel was quite clean. Granted, hotels like this will always have a more lived-in quality but I believe it was otherwise the same level of cleanliness as more mainstream hotels. The room was very clean, especially the bathroom, which looked newly renovated. Surfaces, sheets and carpets were clean and unstained (not something to take for granted in SF!). The bed was very comfortable, in my opinion. I slept well every night. The hotel even provides nice, fresh robes. The lobby looked bright and professional. The decor is a bit out there, but I dont mind as long as things are clean. I also felt safe in the hotel, which is always a huge factor for me. Location: There was not as much foot traffic in this area as others, but I didnt necessary feel unsafe. There is a convenient grocery store down the block and a few food options, including a pizza place right next door. Complaints: I actually had lovely, quiet evenings the first two nights of my stay. A very loud trio stayed in the room next to me the third night. Their "recreational activities" intruded my space as well which was unpleasant. So yes, the hotel walls are thin and it can be a problem depending on your neighbors. However, the hotel concierge seemed very nice and I hope they'd intervene or put you in another room if you asked. I would definitely consider staying here again! read more

I'm obsessed like Scotty was in the movie. The exterior of the Hotel Vertigo, formally The Empire Hotel; located at 940 Sutter Street, was used in Vertigo as location of hotel where Judy Barton lives. The studio version of her hotel room was modelled on room 401, due to their proximity to the Empire's neon sign. We stayed in a double queen room 405 down the hall from 401. They stream the film, Vertigo, on a loop,  24/7 in the lobby. It can be a bit dizzying when one is trying to concentrate. The room we had was facing the street side and didn't seem loud to us as others suggested, and I'm not a heavy sleeper either. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was cleaned to my satisfaction. Snacks and beverages provided in the room are not complimentary. We partook of these goodies after a night of inbibing. The candy came in handy. I loved the orange and cream color palette. The elevator can get busy with wait times, so we took the stairs mostly. The front desk was cordial and efficient. We didn't drive a car, so we didn't need the valet that they provide for a fee. We walked everywhere, the location can't be beat. It's just below Nob Hill, and within walking distance to downtown, Chinatown, and the Ferry Building to name. We took cabs, or Uber to further destinations. Old New York Hotel renovated to the new Hotel Vertigo... still an old hotel to me. Old elevator, old hallways, old paper thin walls that I can hear next door guests coughing and snoring throughout the night. Cons: -Not so friendly/customer oriented hotel staff, -Cable was out, and they didn't even tell me when I checked in. Found out the hard way when I got to my room. You should announce these things when I first get there! -No vending machines, no bottled water. WTH! and it was in the middle of the night when I felt parched. Front desk told me to drink the tap water... yuck -$40 for valet parking! You could just go one block down (840 Sutter St) and pay $21 instead -Those white horse heads for lamps are kinda scary when you look over at them in the middle of the night -As mentioned earlier - the paper thin walls -My room was in the back corner of the hotel, that side was darker and it made the look & feel of the room depressing Pros: -New modern furniture -Mini-fridge -iHome speaker system, handy if you forgot your iPhone charger -Two wireless phones... but why would I need two wireless phones if I'm in the same room? O_0 -Close-by pizzeria, gelato/coffee shop, liquor store Bottom line - I wouldn't stay here again. But if these pros and cons aren't too shabby for your hotel standards, then go for it. I'd rather pay a little more (cost me $93 for a Sat nite) and stay at a nicer place, which is what I should have done. read more

Hotel Vertigo is a great place to stay. Pricing, location, and amenities are what makes this hotel a good choice. All staff I encountered were friendly, including the manager, front desk staff, and housekeeping staff. I arrived at 1pm, and although check-in is not until 3pm, they had a room available for me to check in early. After checking in, I was provided with a map showimg where the hotel is located and it's surrounding areas. Great way to find your way around. The room is clean, comfortable, and pretty modern. There was a nice desk with a chair I could sit at to look out the window and plan my day. There was a fridge with space so I was able to place leftover food or pastries there. There is complimentary tea and coffee 7-10am in the lobby. The fitness center is small, but adequate; it has a treadmill, bike, and elliptical for cardio, mats to stretch or exercise on, exercise balls, weights, a water dispenser, and towels. There's also a TV. The lobby is spacious with plenty of seating; it was perfect for me to hang out there while waiting to meet friends. I never had a problem with wifi. I just had to reconnect each time I left and returned to the hotel, but besides that, it worked perfectly. The hotel is literally in the center of Haight/Ashbury, Castro, Mission, Tenderloin, Union Square, FiDi, North Beach, Chinatown - basically most of the areas in SF. Going down will lead directly into Tenderloin, while going up will lead to Nob Hill and Russian hill, two different vibes. There is Bite, a small restaurant, outside the hotel if you want late night munchies or are hungry. Hotel Vertigo is sandwiched between 2 grocery stores/markets. There are multiple bars on Sutter by the hotel. It is about a 10-15min walk to Union Square. You can go down Sutter either way to avoid the Tenderloin if you want to feel safe. You can take the BART to either Civic Center or Powell to get to the hotel. I used Powell to avoid the Tenderloin area, and both Civic Center and Powell are about the same distance from the hotel so it doesn't matter which you choose. I explored Chinatown and North Beach area, Financial District and the Ferry Building, South of Market, Union Square, and Nob Hill and Russian Hill, all via walking. It was so easy to figure out and get around. Exploring alone at times, I felt safe inside and outside the hotel. Possible negatives: -Elevator is very slow; walking the stairs is faster. -Every single time I left the hotel and came back, my room key did not work. I tried separating it from my credit cards, but it still did not work. Sometimes my friend was in the room so she opened the door for me and other times, I had to walk down 5 flights of stairs to get new keys. One time, I had to go twice because the new key was accidentally registered to a different room #. -I could hear footsteps above me. Realizing that, I tried to step lightly to not bother the people in the room below me. -I had no hot water in the shower during the day, but I got some hot shower water at 11pm. -No air conditioner or heater, but there is a fan. -TV channels were interrupted at times. Who goes to SF to lay and watch TV? My friend does. -I put the "keep it down" sign on the door, but the room was made anyway. The sign is flimsy, so it could have flipped when we closed the door after leaving. I usually pack everything away if housekeeping is coming, but didn't get to this time due to the mix-up. Luckily, all my stuff was left as is and nothing was missing. Everything was refilled in the bathroom. Overall, these possible negatives did not bother me much. The location, safety, and the condition of the hotel outweighed the minor setbacks above. Just keep in mind and be prepared if any of the above will bother you. read more

I am the type of person who relies more on pictures than the actual reviews of people. If the room looks nice, then it must be nice. It's not the best way to looks for a good room, but I didn't have a single problem at Hotel Vertigo. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend because he got me tickets to Wicked and he's never been to SF before. I missed my chance at a room at the Westin because the price went up, so I looked for smaller hotels like this one. When I came across Hotel Vertigo, I couldn't get over how cheap the room was for the weekend and how nice the room looked in the pictures. I was a little scared to book it because a lot of people said how thin the walls were and how hard it was for them the sleep because of it. I took a chance anyway and let me tell you, I am a relatively light sleeper and I had no problems with noise. I had an easy sleep both nights and no outside noise (from the hallway or the streets) bothered me. Now, some people say the staff wasn't so nice, they were rude, and weren't very helpful. I don't know who was working there at the time, but the people I dealt with were as nice and helpful as it gets. The check-in lady was very kind and quick with everything so we could get situated in our room. After we got ready to watch Wicked, we went downstairs and another man was at the check-in desk. We told him we needed to get to the Orpheum Theater and he actually called us a cab. We had 15 minutes to get there and the cab was taking a little too long. He told us it was only a 10 minute walk down Hyde St. and since we're from LA, its not different from the DTLA area. It was a little sketchy, but I never felt unsafe and he was right. It wasn't that much different. Overall, I liked this place and if I planned on visiting the SF area again, I was plan to stay here. I stayed here with a friend over the Christmas holiday. I am a local but my apartment is too small to host guests, and the Hotel Vertigo was everything I had hoped it would be; clean, comfortable, and close! It is a boutique hotel, but the room was VERY spacious. My only complaint is that there wasn't any surface area in the bathroom, even though they could easily fit a table or bench in there, as it was a decent size. That was a hassle, having to go back and forth to the bedroom area for make-up, etc. The staff are very friendly:) I would stay here again! read more

Not the best location in the city, but we had no problem walking to Ferry Building, MOMA, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, and Fisherman's Wharf. We had a good sized king bed room that faced Sutter. Everything was clean, the staff was friendly, and the decor is retro-funky... The hotel does not have a bar or restaurant located in it, but I still really enjoyed our stay. Fantastic experience. The management is one of a kind! I was having a knee surgery and opted to stay at this hotel. I was by myself as no one else was able to accompany me on my trip. The management went out of their way to bring me ice, extra pillows and to only clean my room when asked. The location is superb. You are minutes away from everything San Francisco has to offer and the hotel is very clean. Had to stay here because I was attending an educational convention. All I can say is at least the decor was nice. But that's just about it. This is a very old hotel that they have tried to renovate and update it but underneath the fresh paint and new furniture it's still just an old shack. The door to my room had a big enough gap at the bottom to where if you turn off the lights in the room you can see light from the hallway coming through. This is never good because I could hear the elevator coming up and down and my room was at least 3 rooms away! My queen sized bed was the hardest thing I have ever slept on. I had to take the extra pillows and put them underneath me just so I couldn't feel the springs coming through. The hotel owners went cheap with the beds but screwed up because they put traditional mattresses on platforms that were made for memory mattresses instead of box springs. When I lifted my mattress a bit to see it was just those wooden slats like what we have underneath our memory foam mattress at home. The room was basically clean and came with 2 bathrobes as part of the linens. The room also came with a basic little fridge, iron, and safe. This hotel offers zero amenities aside from a tiny little coffee maker and two bottle waters which will cost you $4 each. I tried to request a roll away bed to sleep in and they all acted like I asked them for golden toilet paper. They said my room wasn't "compatable" with a roll away bed. I asked if they could just upgrade my room to a bigger room so I could have one and they could just charge it to my company account. Then one of the 3 hotel clerks who were all standing there said they couldn't and gave some weird excuse about not being able to sell the room. We have stayed in a lot of hotels and whenever we have requested and upgrade we have never been turned down as long as one was available. Overall this was just a bad experience and since this was paid for by my school I'm going to make sure to let them know to never book this hotel for anyone in the future. read more

The decor is great! There is no help available with bags on arrival. There is no valet parking. You have no option to adjust room temperature. Beds are uncomfortable, woke up sore each morning. Customer service is lacking, took iPhone video of front desk clerk from nightly return, she never noticed for the entirety of 1minute recording while I stood at elevator. We got the famous Vertigo room 401 and it was special to stay in this historic hotel. Met Chris the manager and he was so helpful and kind. This hotel has super thin walls. I was in bed and sleeping until the guests in the room next door arrived around midnight and were getting settled in. Not only could I hear the drawers opening and closing, and them in the bed, I could hear them talking and so on. I had to call the front desk some time after 1 am to ask them to request the guests quiet down. They didnt read more

I traveled to SF this week for work and I kid you not, at $400 a night, Hotel Vertigo was the most economical option. The place is sufficiently clean, but obviously incredibly dated. That was not the issue. The issue was that the entire hotel was air conditioning free. Not one room had air conditioning which in is completely ridiculous in the year 2019, especially when you charge $400 a night. The temperature outside was in the mid to high 80s the entire time I was there. I have one of those zipper thermostats on my suitcase zipper and my room every night was 83-86%! Completely unacceptable. I would never recommend staying there. read more

NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!! If I could give it zero stars, I would. Having read the strong reviews for the Hotel Vertigo, I booked a Saturday night in one of the renovated rooms. In fact, I booked the room over a month prior to the reservation. We arrived, and were enthusiastic about the trendy lobby and the helpful staff... ...then we were told we had been "bumped" from our renovated room. The front desk staffer explained that they had one room left and most of the city was booked... ...so we went to see the room before committing. It was just as awful as the negative reviews. Imagine every seedy, smoked stained, 1980s small-market airport hotel you've ever seen. This room fits the mold. (While I didn't see any mold, the pun is intended.) The management of Hotel Vertigo needs to come to the shocking revelation that they're not a multi-national airline that can justify "bumping" people. In my personal opinion, the Hotel Vertigo is an utter waste of time. Do not trust your reservations with a company that engages in such irresponsible behavior. read more

Cant give this hotel more than a 2.. and the reason it rates that high is for the walking proximity to Union Square.. and offers of safe... and good eats and drinks within walking distance. I found the staff to be rude.. and ruder.. The rudest! BUT, I DID get a hotel that looked like a Motel6--ish in the room and a bit like a nice stylish Miami Sobe on the outside.. OOOHHH get excited !! There's a queen bed that is actually A double.. wow! The elevator?!! Just hoof it.. you will get there faster even with crutches as I did just having torn ACL surgery .. and be ready.. you may save on $$ to stay here.. such as I did; but with that said.. I guess it is true , you do only get what you truly pay for! Budget is budget ! Do not factor 'budget' into parking ... it was over $30 PER day, so I found a cheaper garage down the way for just $21 per day. The slow wifi.. and two plug outlets for the room and loo ! .. yeah.. I decided to stay at this Hotel for a conference that I was attending. I booked on their website, and with no difference explained about the renovated vs. non-renovated rooms, I could only assume I was getting a room that looked like their only representation of rooms on their website. There was absolutely no mention of a non-renovated room option. Needless to say I was sorely disappointed when I arrived and my room looked like any other third rate cheap motel room. There was no flat screen, iPod dock or anything displayed on their website. Instead I was greeted to a Zenith, cigarette smelling dingy room. When I called the front desk to express my concern, I was told I could buy the upgrade for $30. No Thanks!!! I could have gotten a nicer room in a better area for the $110 I paid, and an even nicer room if I were planning on spending $140. Well, I decided to leave and stay on my friends couch. When I told the front desk clerk that I was really disappointed and was leaving, I got a casual "okay" as she took my key back and then as I rounded the corner outside of the hotel- her and her co-worker were having a hearty chuckle. Pretty much this was the most untruthful, unfriendly and disrespectful place I have ever stayed. I guess if you want to stay there- make sure you are not staying in one of their "non-renovated" rooms, which exist, despite not being mentioned anywhere. read more

BEDBUG ALERT Ever since I checked out of this place last weekend, my life has been a nightmare. Not only was my lower back eaten alive by bedbugs (about 10 bites on my lower back), but they hitched a ride home in my luggage and I was getting bit for days. When I checked out, I immediately contacted the hotel, and then the manager via email when he was back on Monday. He sent me some arrogant response saying they'd checked the room and found no pests. Congrats, Hotel Vertigo. You passed my "Can I use your restroom test?" so you are getting my 5 stars for being so cool. The story of my "Can I use your restroom test?": I'm an Uber driver in the city and one of the problems I have is - where to pee (yes, the struggle is real). So very often I stop by a random store, cafe, hotel or anything that potentially has a solution to my problem. We all know there is a general rule of "Restroom is for customers only" in most of the businesses. So I think that letting/forbidding a non-customer to use their bathroom is a great litmus test of a customer service. If a business allows a non-customer to use their bathroom it shows a deep care in serving people. Not matter if they bring you money or not. So this is deserved to be acknowledged with a 5 star review on Yelp. If a business rejects a non-customer to use their bathroom it demonstrates an absence of the fundamental quality - serving the community. They are here only for the money. If a business, in such a highly competitive environment, doesn't have this "serving" attitude at their core they are not gonna last long. So my 1 star yelp review will help them to end their unfortunate enterprise slightly sooner. And you would be surprised how many businesses actually reject non customers. Moreover, some of them encourage you to buy something to become one and use the bathroom. So this clearly signals to me that the business is so bad that you would want to become a customer only if you desperately need to pee. Again, thanks Hotel Vertigo for being compassionate to a basic human need and letting me use your bathroom. I appreciate your service! read more

A dear friend of mine, whose heart is made of bits and pieces of the AMAZING San Francisco, told me that Hotel Vertigo--which used to be the Hotel York--had a wonderful cabaret called "The Plush Room". My friend had the fortune to see Ella Fitzgerald performing there. As always, and due to my tendency of over fantasizing with the past, I wished I could go back in time and had the same opportunity. I brushed my fingers through the walls in hopes of touching the very same spots some stars did back in the glory days. I love when I'm somewhere with a past, with a good story to tell. It makes your travel experience a better one. Today, the Plush Room is awaiting to be remodeled, while most of the Hotel York has gone through the process already. The results is the newborn Hotel Vertigo, which is a lovely hotel that still keeps some of the feel of past times here and there. We got a very cozy and hip room for a very reasonable price. The room wasn't huge but it was certainly comfortable. The decor is sleek and a bit on the kitschy side, but on the good one. Horse-shaped lamp bases and a big reading chair with the word "Vertigo" embroided on it welcome you to your room. The hotel robes are soft and warm. Linens and towels are of great quality. H2O mini spa products keep you company while you sing in the shower. The bathroom is small overall but lovely, while the bathtub is pretty large. Decoration is presented to you in the signature colors of the hotel: orange, white, cream and dark lavender. They also "conserve" and invite you to save some water by reusing linens and towels. We had a cool neighbor, a dog that welcomed us every time we went out or came back with a single bark. The Dude and I have a thing for pet friendly hotels. The plush dark carpets also help with the soft, muted acoustics of the place. The hotel is located about 15 minutes away for Downtown San Francisco (by foot). There are several markets, coffee shops and restaurants around. The outstanding part of our stay was the service. All members of the hotel's staff were incredibly polite, kind and attentive. What I really enjoyed was that all that seemed very genuine and warm. When checking out, we were asked about our stay and if we had any suggestions to make things better. All we had for them were good words. They did such a wonderful job in making us feel welcomed...we will definitely come back to Vertigo. Four point five stars, solid as a rock. ...And I need to go back because I left my heart somewhere in a drawer. But what can you do? It's San Francisco. read more

We stayed here for one night, because $111 is actually cheaper than taking a cab back to the Peninsula after an evening of cocktailing. I'm a member of the Personality Hotel chain, and this one didn't dissapoint. (Tip - Join the Perks program. We received a room upgrade, M&Ms and a bottle of water upon check-in). The Hotel Vertigo is walking distance to Union Square, and Chinatown (for Sunday morning dim-sum) if you don't mind a couple of hills. Quiet room with a cute view of a courtyard, very friendly staff and very clean. I don't know if they're booking the non-renovated rooms, but I took the stairs a couple of times and saw floors 2 & 3 which are original....definitely try & get a renovated room!! PS there is a parking garage on Leavenworth at Sutter which is $15 or $20 (non-SUV versus SUV) for 24 hours. The parking at the hotel is $35 for valet. read more

[pics added] that nun said it best in the last lines of the movie "vertigo": god, have mercy. -1 star: OVERBOOKING the renovated room type that i paid for online wasn't available, so christina put us up in a renovated parlor room which only had a murphy bed in comparison to the king which was originally promised. there was a price difference, and she was gonna see about discounting the parking fee. -0.5: MOVIN' FURNITURE the room was tiny but it was expected for the parlor room. the couch blocked the murphy bed, so in order to pull it down you had to rearrange all the furniture in the narrow space. the feat was seriously like those parking lot brain games. like austin powers and his golf cart debacle. luckily the SO was with me because i don't think i could have pulled the murphy bed down by myself. (btw, watch your fingers! one ill-fated grab and you're blood blister bound). +0.5: CLEANLINESS the SO is a complete germaphobe and was skeptical about the cleanliness of a bed that was stuck in the wall for who knows how many days. luckily, the sheets were very clean and the bed was very comfortable. the room only smelled a bit like a new paint which wasn't bothersome at all. the room decor was definitely modern, but the SO loves that kinda style so it was okay. +0.5: SHOWER EXPERIENCE/ AMENITIES the bathroom was ultra clean and had a large rainbath-like showerhead with perfect water pressure. operating the shower is similar to east coast hotels (and our own house shower) where you pull on the spout to route the water upwards. other amenities included: cordless phone, wall mounted plasma tv, safe, robes, though the freaking heater was a rickety old period piece. but for the price, the room was a decent value. -1.5: DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR? at 10pm i called christina to order our car from valet per the front desk valet 20-min notice. we needed to be at our venue at 11pm. we arrive at the lobby at 10:20pm. another dude asks for our valet ticket. he tells us that it will take 20 mins. we told him we already called. after 40 min, he finally called the valet staff to follow up on our car. even then, he didn't ask for an ETA or exactly where the car is. had he been more diligent or at least informative, we could figure out if we should wait or hail a cab instead. -1: THE SHIRKY STAFF the guy was neither communicative, responsive, nor proactive. his MO: walk outside and aimlessly look for our car in the street, come inside, and say it's not here yet. to us, he seemed unapologetic and acted arrogantly put out, as if we've inconvenienced him. at 10:40 he asked when we called. at that point i yelled at him for being useless and wanted his name. he sarcastically answered thank you to all the insults and gave us his name, which we still couldn't understand (it sounded like cell-so in mumblespeak). wouldn't you think that being employed (in a recession, within a high-turnover industry) would motivate one to provide the best possible customer service in order to secure their position? this is clearly not the case here. vertigo is cute, but not cute enough to endure the crappy service. = 2 stars overall, and i'm being nice. read more

Ultra modern rooms and centrally located to Union Square and Chinatown. They make orange look good! The elevator was very slow, ended up taking the stairs after waiting for 5 minutes! The hotel was being renovated when we were there a year ago...can't wait to see how it looks now. Not only did our car windows get smashed and robbed in the night (right around corner front on hotel entrance) but Greg at the front desk was really rude when he called up to say " HEY ITS TIME TO CHECK OUT GUYS!"... oops except we secured a late checkout time to deal with insurance and the police. What a jerk. It was right on his screen that we called and got the ok. Also room smelled like rancid almonds. Way better options out there. read more

We got ourselves a newly renovated Queen room for the night and were not disappointed. Clean and well arranged given how tight the space was. I know SF hotels room tend to be small, especially when they are in older buildings, but I thought it was decent for the price and location. One thing I really liked was the bathroom. It was very spacious and squeaky clean. The walk in shower was HUGE! It could have easily fit five people. Don't worry, I made a mental note about it for later. The elevator was slow, so save yourself some frustration and take the stairs. I look forward to the hotel growing. Once the restaurant is done I can perhaps upgrade to 4 stars. read more

There are so many terrific boutique hotels in San Francisco that you could probably sleep somewhere different every day of the year and have a lovely time. Everywhere else that would make you a common whore, but in San Francisco you'd be known as a "connoisseur." No wait, that's what they'd call you in Paris. I think in San Francisco the word for that is "Elite Yelper." Designing a hotel based on Hitchcock's classic San Francisco film Vertigo is a fantastic idea. The central staircase, the film in the lobby on an endless loop (which must NOT be so lovely for the people working the front desk after a week or two), the room's themselves that have a sort of late 50s aesthetic. A sign in the lobby announces "Equilibrium is overrated." Yeah, I agree, so why no bar in the lobby? Apparently, they're working on that, so in the meantime I had to make frequent visits to Cantina across the street. Like most boutique hotels in San Francisco, the rooms are small but stylish. The bed was super, super comfortable. And yes, you naughty minx, I did actually sleep in it. For at least a couple hours. Helpful, friendly staff who didn't judge me when I staggered in at 4 in the morning. God I love this city. read more
