This was a super convenient location for dinner at Daniel, literally around the corner. The deal on Expedia was good, and the hotel offers 24 hour room service, fitness and a three meal restaurant, as well as valet parking. The staff, from the doorman, bellman snd on on were so nice and a pleasure to speak with, a real treat when it comes to hotel staff. A bit on the expensive side, but a block from Central Park, terrific amenities, quiet and clean, clean clean. Room had a big TV, DVD player and a nice bathroom with good water pressure. Why not five stars, you ask? There is no plug-in (no outlet, no USB) on either side of my bed - a must have for todays techno world. Bit happy as pie and would definitely stay here again. read more

My review is only on the service & Bar area. With that being said, here we go! Ok this is a continuance from my son & I meeting the Honeymoon couple from Ireland. This is where they stayed. Now I want you to understand we have NEVER done this before but something just seemed so natural , so we went with it. Matty & Anne needed their ID to drink so we offered them a ride back to their hotel because they didn't know where they were or how they got there & Son and I aren't familiar with the subway. They thought they could walk. We were on 34th and this hotel is on 64th! Cold & Snow all over! Walking was not an option! Son drove, they loved riding through NYC with the music blasting. We pulled up to the hotel and the doorman from the Queens let us park right in front, told us it was $45 or was it $65 to Valet Park. VHAAAT?! We hit him off. We were coming right back out. Anne runs up to the room & Matty buys us a round of drinks in the hotel bar. Some Stella Artois & sons Grey Goose & Pineapple. Everyone was friendly & accommodating especially Gil. Gil the Bartender/Waiter for the night was awesome! The lounge area is dark & elegant. Old school elegance. Very warm & comforting. We met Gil's boss, but I forgot his name, he was friendly & funny too. Gil even gave my son a free drink to try. Just to get his opinion. Nice touch Gil! It was here that a new friendship was bonded. Me, Son, Matty & Anne. Great conversation & new things learned about our different countries. Couldn't have met a cooler couple. I didn't get to see the rooms but from the service I received at the door & in the lobby I would highly recommend staying here. Great Staff & Experience! read more

I'll go with the positive's first: The staff is incredible. Doorman was as good as 'Alexa' from Amazon; if you need a ride? He's got you. Luggage needs to be unloaded? He's got you. A bag needs a 'babysitter' while you go for a walk in the park? He's got you. Reception desk and check in desks were *just* as helpful. All employees were on the ball, here. Polite as fuck, great demeanor, knew what they were doing and showed enthusiasm to help you. The negative stuff: Not only did I book my 3 day, 2 night stay through a third party for what was supposed to a "discounted rate", the discounted rate for this hotel for those 2 nights totalled $1370.58. No, I'm not shitting you. Having that large of an expense for a 2 night stay in the back of my mind the whole weekend, I expected a lot from the hotel. Yeah... they didn't deliver. The room was small. It's Manhattan, real estate is expensive, I get it, I get it. But I paid $1400! Common! When I laid on the made-bed for two seconds to relax, I started sneezing like a maniac. All the bedding smelled like dull moth balls. End of the night, it's bed time, the bed itself is one of those old skool spring form mattresses from the 80's. I've got back problems galore. Next morning, I was in so much pain... it was nuts!!! The bathroom had one of those high school commercial toilets; I almost fell in! No vent in the potty and let's be honest, everyone's shit stinks. We had to open the tiny window in the bathroom, and the windows in the room just to aerate the place. The mini bar had some cutesy snacks available on top of the fridge. Gummy bears, mixed nuts, etc.. However, each microscopic jar of said-snack was $16! A glass bottle of diet coke was $9. Prices for everything are set for naive tourists; fucking insane. To wrap up: Its gorgeous, well decorated, and well ran by an amazing staff. But it's *severely* over priced and in need of renovations, stat. I'll be staying below 14th street, next time. read more

This charming hotel is now my favorite in nyc. I found it through American Express fine hotels and resorts. The hotel is small, and every employee has been amazing. The lobby is beautiful as well as the rooms. They set the standard. I am having dinner at the restaurant now which is beautiful and classy. I thought the dinner would be expensive but is reasonable and lower then most 5 star hotels. This is definitely my new favorite hotel in nyc. Aside from the sea bass my wife ordered, the food here is TERRIBLE. Last night I had the soggiest, most tasteless fish and chips in my life, accompanied by tasteless tarter sauce and the soggiest french fries in my life. Today, I had the worst onion soup in my life, accompanied by tasteless grapefruit and tasteless grapefruit juice. I don't know how you screw up grapefruit, but they managed to do it. On top of that, my wife got her hair styled yesterday and the cost was 295 Euros. The stylist said her normal charge was 40 Euros. TOTAL RIP-OFF!!! Plus, the hotel lacks a pool. All this indignity for a mere $5,000 a night! We're leaving five nights early and moving to the George V which has a pool and hopefully better food than the garbage they are serving us here. read more

If you want to feel what a real full service "old New York" vibe this is your place, AMEX travel card gets you perks as this hotel is on the "fine hotels" list. The moment your car pulls up to the door you are greeted with a friendly doorman, walking in to the lobby you get a sense of high class with fancy watches and jewelry on display, the bar/ restaurant area is off to the left and is very posh with the sky painted ceiling you few like your outside! There are 2 elevators, they are covered in leather. Room is very well put together. The staff is what makes this place amazing. They even went to great lengths to make sure we have everything we need, like running to the store to buy bubbles for a bubble bath!! Thank you for making a great stay! read more

This is not a 5 star hotel. It is outdated and needs renovation, staff are unhelpful, and there are countless little things (that are standard in any hotel) that add up to really spoil the stay e.g. no free coffee/tea or water in the room, toiletries not changed when they are clearly empty, doormen often absent. If you still decide for some reason to stay here, DO NOT ORDER ROOM SERVICE. Seeing a breakfast menu with no prices, we pointed this out to the night manager and asked how it would be charged. He, after looking up our room package, told us the only charge would be $6 pp + tax + gratuity. Based on the representation that we would ONLY be charged the $6 + tax + gratuity, we ordered a lot of breakfast. In a hazy, morning state, and in good faith on the night manager's words, we foolishly signed the bill without reading. On check-out, we were hit with a $236 bill (reduced a measly $16 with items grouped into a package). We were very shocked given the info provided by the manager. When we asked for the deceptive misrepresentation to be investigated, the night manager LIED, stating he had told us we would be charged per food item. Other managers were extremely unhelpful and hostile, stating they had the "facts," which didn't include our side of the story. Now $236 was for bacon + eggs, omelette, coffee, tea, juice, a bagel, yogurt, bircher muesli and fruit. Crazy pricing - $11 for tea. You'd think at these prices they'd try to make it taste decent - you'd be wrong. read more

We normally stay on the lower east side - this was a little different for us. If you are looking for a place to stay in this neighborhood I would recommend. As expected the Hotel does not respond to constructive criticisms but does respond to those who make positive comments. This ties in to our experience at the hotel. We checked in late and had the frequently described in house restaurant experience. Totally unreasonable pricing and a waiter who insisted upon being part of our party. Somebody needs to train the waiters to know that we do not want to hear about their families schools, etc. and to please be invisible unless needed. The next night is when the fun started....we were smack in the middle of a road resurfacing project on 64th street. Now I know that the hotel cannot PREVENT this but since they did charge us to sleep at the hotel then they are obligated to give us a place to SLEEP. They did nothing of the sort and pretty much blamed me for complaining. They denied knowledge of the event but knew early on that the street was being cleared of cars and the project was in process. At that time a 5 star hotel should scramble to relocate guests to less offensive room positions. In summary, the hotel does not understand what true 5 star service means. Everything in the confines of the hotel reflects this concept. We will not return to the hotel. read more

My stay in this hotel was a complete disappointment. I should have known immediately that it wasn't going to be good when I found out they somehow cancelled my reservation that I made on their website. Good thing I decided to call to confirm the day before my stay and they were able to give me a new reservation . The hotel is old but they rooms look clean and nice. Too bad the bed felt like I was sleeping on a slab of concrete. The shower drain was so clogged that the tub filled up quickly during my shower which I had to end before the tub overflowed. The shower head sprayed everywhere and barely on my body. The hot water dribbled out of the faucet in the marble bathroom. When I checked out and I was asked about my stay, I told them all of this and they just didn't seem to care. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone! read more

It simply has the most intimate, seductive yet comfortable hotel lobby in Manhattan. The concierge, with his twinkling eyes and smile wreathed face was informative and just delightful to chat with. I went there on 6/23 for a luxury product event. It was held in a private room off the bar, which I must say, looks like a place to go for a quiet sexy drink. The waiters were old world Gentlemen and I do write it with a capital G because they were charming, darling and oh so funny. One gentlemen provided champagne to all. At one point he walked up to me and said, "Oh you must have another glass." "I'd love to, but I've all ready had two." "I'm not counting, go ahead it's good for you." We went to New York for a special birthday for my wife. We came from LA with family and friends. This is no inexpensive hotel. It cost a bundle. It was not worth it in the least. I strongly recommend you don't step foot in this hotel. Terrible service. Here's just a few examples. Dishes, silverware, cups, uneaten food from room service in our room were never cleaned up by housekeeping in our entire 4 day stay. Tub broke twice. Drain parts left in tub by whoever they sent to fix it. We were late to events because we couldn't use the bathroom with the "repair" person in the baRude desk staff when I called them to complain about these problems. It was as if I were putting them out. When we returned home, I wrote to the manager to describe our poor experience. His answer was to offer us an upgrade next time we came to New York and stayed at the hotel. Useless worthless hollow offer- whenever we are in NY next, we would NEVER stay in this overpriced ripoff. read more

This is not my favorite high end hotel in NYC, (high end being over 600 a night), but to give it less than five stars, simply wouldn't be fair. Plaza Athenee is gorgeous, ultra high end, and the lap of luxury. The staff is beyond attentive, and the rooms do not miss a single detail. However, I would certainly say that this hotel is more suited to an older crowd. While, I did enjoy my stay, I'm 26 years old and did not feel that the price of the hotel and what they offered were suited to my needs. It had more of an old money feel, the type of place more suited to my parents, I most certainly prefer some of the Hotels further downtown, ie The Mercer. This is not to take away from the Plaza Athenee, simply a matter of preference. If your looking to stay on the UES, this is a beautiful hotel, and you will not be disappointed, but I urge you to explore some of the more interesting areas of the city. read more

I couldn't think of anything more boring than returning to our apartment after such a big event as our wedding. So we decided to stay at a beautiful manhattan hotel on our wedding night. We had never been to Athenee before, or even seen it from the outside, but the pictures we saw looked wonderful. The Hotel Plaza Athenee did not disappoint. We arrived, still in our wedding clothes and still on Cloud 9, but exhausted. The woman who checked us in was so pleasant and thrilled to see the new bride and groom, offering her congratulations and complimenting my dress. Our suite was the size you would expect of a manhattan hotel, but still very comfortable. Our bed was covered in rose petals and there was champagne and chocolate covered strawberries awaiting us. The bathroom was lovely and bed was very comfortable (this is very important on your wedding night for several very obvious reasons!). We only stayed the one night, and when we checked out, the same woman assisted us. She wished us well and went out of her way to give us a few things from the hotel as momentos in case we wanted to make a scrap book. We did not see much else aside from the beautiful lobby and the suite during our stay, but I'm sure the rest of the hotel is just as lovely. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to splurge on a luxury hotel. And its close proximity to the park makes it even better. read more

What an awful experience Super tired from a long flight, enter the hotel and I need to wait for twenty minutes before someone at the front desk can check me in. And then i am told there are no rooms ready and I have to wait for an hour or so for something to become available. I am not even checked in yet and already pissed. I booked this hotel based on my previous positive experience at their Paris establishment. But there is nothing French about their hospitality here. It seems there is only chaos. Very disappointed. BAR ONLY: This is another hotel bar /lounge on a par with the St. Regis or the Pen. Old crowd as you would expect on the Upper East Side. The same people who drink here love Seasons, which is either closed or going to close very soon. If you are looking for the consistency of the corporate "Ritz" hotels avoid the Plaza Athenee. If you are looking for small and charming hotel with an incredibly well trained staff with personality then book a room PDQ at the Plaza Athenee. Service: The staff here is off the chart with wonderful personalities. They are genuinely welcoming, gracious and intelligent. The Gym: Now I am a committed gym rat so the bar is high for the gym. The gym is super clean well equipped and mostly empty which is OK with me since I love having a private gym. The Bar: The best part of the hotel with a cozy feel with a wonderful bar menu and comfortable seating. When I am not busy being a gym rat I am happily pursing a life as a bar fly. This is a most excellent bar. The Restaurant: The night was cold and snowy so despite the desire to wander out to a local restaurant we decided to eat in the hotel. Good choice; the food is excellent, the service top flight and the atmosphere welcoming. Tony seems to rule the roost with a wonderful smile and a wonderful ability to make guests comfortable. Be careful with your ordering here. No tiny meals here since portions are generous. The only draw back to this hotel is the slightly date bathrooms that are in need of an overhaul. Finally the location is great if you are in town for a show or shopping. read more

I have never stayed at the Hotel Plaza Athenee, but stop by for high tea, which is served in a lovely room off the Bar Seine. My quest for the quintessential afternoon tea has taken me to a number of hotels and independent tea rooms around the city. So far, I haven't found the perfect blend of sweet, savory and service. The Plaza Athenee stands out for the quality of its scones, which are baked to order. The clotted cream didn't have the tang I look for, but was flavorful. The jams were commercial and served in little jars, but high quality nonetheless. They say Queen Elizabeth doesn't eat onions or garlic. She should stick to tea in Buckingham Palace because the Plaza Athenee uses both liberally in their tea sandwiches. Their smoked salmon was the highest quality I've had, but a tomato and mozzarella with pesto just didn't belong on the platter. Tea sandwiches are supposed to be delicate bites, but these were served on thick slabs of bread. The array of sweets served here is unsurpassed -- at least a dozen bite sized morsels, plus two chocolate covered strawberries. My English Breakfast tea was excellent -- much higher quality than expected. Service was a bit inconsistent but very friendly. Even though I was alone, they served me a double portion of sweets and scones, and gladly packed up the leftovers for me to take home. At $45, the tea service is competitively priced for NYC, the ambiance is lovely, and the food satisfying. I would love to combine the sandwiches and service of the nearby Pembroke Room with the scones and sweets from the Plaza Athenee. Instead I will have to alternate between the two. A pleasure, not a sacrifice. read more

The experience is akin to what I would imagine it would be like to stay in a friend's park avenue apartment, with the right to make use of all of their household staff. The rooms were large for Manhattan. A key anecdote: a friend who was also staying there noticed that he had forgotten his cellphone charger, so the hotel sent someone to Duane Reade to fetch one for him. Another anecdote: I had been staying there for my wedding weekend, and had forgotten the groomsmen gifts in my room. I called the hotel and they were able to find them in my room and have them delivered to be in under and hour. read more

Loved the atmosphere at the Athenee's bar. The drinks were served sufficiently cold but not over iced, they were just right. The bar staff were attentive without being overbearing or intrusive. It's really nice when in a bar the staff now exactly when to interject in a conversation to see that everything is ok or if refills are needed. Wow. I loved this hotel. I had a standard room with a king size bed that was probably the closest thing to sleeping on a cloud. The staff is courteous and attentive. When I got there my room was not ready as I had arrived an hour before check-in. They offered me a delicious freshly squeezed orange juice to wait and I ended up getting breakfast there. I will definitely come back to this place and I surely recommend this place to other travelers. Also, ask the concierge about sushi Seki. Amazing sushi place few blocks away from the hotel. Sitting here now on my last morning after a hot summer visit of many days. The staff here are wonderful--each one has worked hard to make this a remarkable stay. The room is large, bed comfortable and the sheets divine. Lovely chairs to relax in and read. Bathroom large w lots of counter space. Hot water and a shower w some power--very welcome after long days at the US open. Little cool bar off the lobby has an exceptional choice of wine. Doormen are happy to provide suggestions (thx Jawn!) and won't even accept a tip for it! The housekeeper is lovely and does a fantastic job. Stepping into the hotel I was in a state of complete self-indulgent bliss. A great concierge, very friendly staff, and the most beautiful french inspired decor I have seen. The room I stayed in was spacious and the exercise facility was quaint and functional. There was not a moment when I did not feel 100% comfortable and taken care of. Simply amazing! Although the nightly rate is intimidating, know that you are getting your money's worth. Be sure to eat a meal (breakfast is always good) in the hotel's restaurant as well. We stayed at this hotel for the first time in December and we will definitely be back! AMEX Platinum Travel recommended this hotel and it's a gem in NYC. Located on a more residential street with brownstones across from the entrance, the hotel was beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays. The hotel has an "old world" vibe that some might stay is out-dated but it's really lovely and elegant although not "stuffy". (Many younger people were guests and in the bar area and seemed as happy as were.) The staff is excellent from the doormen and front desk staff to housekeeping-- all so helpful and polite. We stayed in room 415 which was surprisingly large and was furnished with a king bed, two large, comfortable arm chairs, a desk with chair, a large dresser and large flatscreen tv. Refrigerator and minibar were all stocked. The bathroom was HUGE with loads of counter and storage space (a rare find in NYC). Bed was super comfortable, lovely linens and TWO closets. We never heard any noise in the hallway or from the nearby elevator. There is an intimate bar area with comfortable arm chairs that seemed to be doing a lively business. The restaurant for breakfast had excellent food. Our only complaint was the restaurant and bar staff. They were either disorganized or understaffed because a salad took 45 minutes one night and scrambled eggs good 40 minutes the next morning. Although the wait staff was very polite that's too long for the $$$$ price. I highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for something other than the usual "big, crowded hotel". Located on the fashionable Upper East Side of Manhattan, the Hotel Plaza Athenee is within walking distance of Central Park, boutiques, museums, art galleries, New York's finest department stores, and business areas. Amid the elegance of Madison and Park Avenues lies the charm of a European-style hotel. This posh, intimate hotel has just 152 rooms and is well known for offering the ultimate in personalized service. We stayed in one of 2 penthouse duplexes. One is red the other is yellow. We stayed in the red one for 3 days. I felt like a princess... They are SPACIOUS and take up the 16Th and 17Th floors! The outdoor terrace is HUGE and fabulous. The bathrooms are gorgeous. The bedroom decorated romantically. The only drawback is the $4700 dollar per night price tag. If you want ultimate luxury this is your place. read more

For 700$ a night, I expect absolute perfection. I do not expect an aggressively loud air system, nor do I expect to hear people screaming in the hallways at all hours. My room faces a brick wall and has a tiny window. Very claustrophobic. The shower has very little pressure and the toilet flushes very loudly. Maybe for a less expensive hotel it would be alright, but for 700$ I expect an extremely luxurious hotel. (And free wifi.) read more

Just returned from a trip booked through CTS (AMEX). Very disappointed. I found the staff to be extremely uppish. Having stayed in other 5 star hotels in the city I know this is not the norm. Location was good, room was clean and decorated well. Just cant get past the bad attitude from multiple staff. 5 star demands GREAT SERVICE! Although the location is wonderful and the beds are comfie, there are way too many touches missing from this hotel. No bottled water at turndown? Who on earth doesn't provide water anymore? There is a tub, a shower and a sink but housekeeping apparently thinks that you should tote your soap and shampoo back and forth between fixtures. There is very limited hot water, so if you enjoy a good hot shower, be prepared-you won't be getting one. The air conditioning and heating system is archaic. There is no guide on the TV, so good luck finding a channel. The Maison du Chocolat goodie that was left one night was melted and had an expiration date of 1/14. Maybe the housekeeper found it under the bed. We won't be staying here again. read more

Home of the creme-de-la-creme (as well as crooks) of Manhattan, quiet tree-lined streets flanked by Central Park on the west and East River on the east and the famous Madison Ave and Park Ave. So having spent previous NYC visits in lesser hotels in more raucous neighborhood, I was looking forward to the peace and quiet during our 4-night stay at the Plaza Athenee. The hotel screams old money, is charming and was everything that I was expecting: excellent and personable service, extremely nice rooms, fluffy towels and twice-a-day housekeeping visits. Oh how I love the bathrobe, plump pillows and soft white bed linens after a day of walking in the brutal heat and humidity that is a staple New York August afternoon. The neighborhood was unlike anywhere else in Manhattan. Other than the occasional stray tourists who were out shopping on Madison Ave, there were hardly anybody walking the little streets. There was none of those aggressive cabs who shamelessly run past red lights either. With Chanel, among other haute couture boutiques, just around the corner on 64th and Madison, and Bernie Madoff's $7.5M Upper East Side duplex just down the road on 133 64th St, life in the Upper East Side would be sweet. Now, what kind of money are we supposed to be making to be able to afford an establishment here? read more
