We absolutely loved staying at the Riu. It's a beautiful green, well manicured hotel. The pools are delightful, the staff is very friendly and accommodating! There are a lot of choices of food, and the drinks are plentiful! They also provide entertainment, which we did not go to. The last thing that I wanted to mention is the safety of Playacar. You have to go through guards and show them your reservation in order to come through the gates. The homes are beautiful in large in this area. Thank you Marisol for everything, you represent the company well! You are patient and professional! We will return!!

Easily the worst resort I have ever stayed at in Mexico. You are better of staying at a hostel or random motel 6, though you will probably get a mixer room and service. Where do I even start. There moldy mattress? Terrible gas station quality food? Diseased looking hot dogs in a fridge that they pass off as the 24/7 snack bar? Or perhaps the facilities that are all closed? Lets go to beginning. They promised to pick us up in a shuttle from the airport. We got a confirmation from the hotel and I made sure to confirm with the transport company a few days prior. Surprise surprise, they failed to book us transport snd were very confused at the airport. After we showed them multiple confirmations they 'found' us on page 2. We were promised a ride in 15 minutes. 2 hours and many promises later we finally got our ride along with several other unhappy travelers who all needed rides to other resorts. It took a very very long time to get to playacar. We barely made it before ALL the restaurants closed at 10 PM. With a few minutes to spare we went to the asian restaurant near the lobby. The food was bitterly disappointing after a whole days travels. The fish was old, everything was fried and greasy, and overall tasted worse than day old Ihop. The only palatable food was the fruit. After our dinner we got our room assignment. At first it looked pretty bad. Like a poorly maintained motel in the boonies. After looking around some more we noticed black spots on the pillows. That lead me to start looking around. The mattress was disgusting. It has mold and stains everywhere. The curtains were shredded and stained. The wallpaper was dirty and sticky. The wall paint was peeling and dirty ask over. Ask the fixtures were rusty. The entire place was just filthy and disgusting. I've honestly never seen anything that bad and I have traveled a lot to some very poor areas of the world. This place was bad. They should be ashamed. We went to bar to try and drown out the bitter disappointment, but lo and and behold they have a new rule, as of two days ago that no alcohol is allowed after 11pm. We had enough at this point and went to talk to the front desk. Adrian kindly promised to email the Riu services, since we booked on the riu site, and help us out in the morning. He didnt. Every promise at this hotel was broken and not honored. Every shred of blame always deflected on someone else. In the morning we told a lady we wanted to cancel our stay. She didnt even ask why, just gave us a paper to sign. She said she coildnt help and we need to call The riu help line. At that point we had enough and just found another place to book. Not at all how I wanted to spend my vacation time. After finding a new place we called riu, and they of course said we need to talk to the front desk. Just pass rhe problem on. Seeing a pattern? We called them while at the front desk and made them talk to each-other. After a long while of arguing, a lady claiming to be the manager, supposedly Karen, finally agreed to a partial refund after being shown pictures of mold everywhere in the room. She refused to give me any proof that a refund would be made, and refused to show any info beyond her first name. Very professional. Tldr. Moldy rooms Horrible service Nasty gas station food Close early Horrific snack bar. Disgusting No accountability Worst resort of all time I would rather stay at a hoste All the employees here seemed miserable.

This hotel is highly underrated, I think it's an amazing place to stay. It's on the smaller side, but don't let that fool you. Be aware it's not fancy or luxury but it will do the job. I highly recommend it, and here is why: The good: - it's all inclusive, food and drinks (alcoholic and non) are included. They have 3 theme restaurants (Steakhouse/Mexican, Asian, and Italian), and a main restaurant (the Palms) for breakfast buffet. I have tried all of them and the food it's pretty good, it has lots of options, and some have stations where they cook the food at the moment. - It's located in the same complex as other hotels, including other two Riu. This one is the smallest one, but it's still a pretty good size, you are a short walk from everything, including the beach. Also, there is like a bazar of stores in front that you can explore. - the service it's amazing. They keep the hotel super clean, and well maintained. All of them are bilingual (English and Spanish). - they have tours and tickets to different attractions around here (if you have time, Chichen itzá is one of the seven wonders, and Xcaret is a theme park). - Rooms are very comfortable, and spacious. I got the Ocean view and the view is great, specially for sunsets and sunrises. - Prices are mid range, but for all that is included, it's a good deal. The hotel is 24 hours service basically. You have full access to food, drinks, and the beach! You get a better deal if you reserve directly with them. It includes transportation from the airport, and insurance (although basic, it's better than nothing). - there are free chairs in the beach, and they have water activities some included and others at an extra price. - they have a full spa and gym. - it has two pools (I think) they can get loud during the day, but hey... it's part of the "vacation mode". - there is a mini bar in the room with sodas, water and beer included, it also has i self disperser with full bottles for Vodka, Rum, Tequila, and Gin (crazy huh) The not so good: - The beach tends to get busy after 11AM, so if you want to get a good spot, better get there early! - they don't have elevators, so if you have limited mobility make sure to tell them the moment you do your reservation. -Towels are included but are limited to one per person, so you may want to bring some extra. You can exchange them though at any time during the day!

This place is amazing in any way you can possibly imagine.

This hotel is just amazing everything that I have experienced is absolute perfection from room service to the food. Let's start from the time we arrived. When we came to the hotel friendly, amazing stuff welcomed us. They even took our luggage from the car and delivered straight into our room. Just because this hotel is 5 stars, we were allowed to go to 3 other hotels either to hang out or to visit their restaurants. This hotel has 5 bars. One of the most amazing one is the one at the pool. It's incredible how could they come up with the idea to build a bar in the pool. It had tables and chairs made out of granite that was installed in that pool. In that incredible hot weather is amazing to just get some refreshing cold drinks inside the pool(pictures are below). One time we went to the sea at night and there were people that was cleaning the beach and pool area. All in have to say is that those places are super clean. The beach has lots of beach beds to lay down. The staff is carrying around all kinds of drinks with or without alcohol. If you want to get some drink you can just ask and they will bring it to you. They have 5 different restaurant that are well served. I have never seen a person without a smile there. The servers are amazing. Those guys will be around you offering all kinds of drinks. The food is incredible they have Mexican American Asian Italian. I would highly recommend this place to anyone..

I think for an All Inclusive resort, its good value. Don't expect the Ritz, but for the price, its better than staying at an AirBnB. We went in May 2022, and we found the hotel very nice, with more modern architecture and the staff work very hard to keep it clean. Hotel Riu have 5 other hotels, but I think Playacar has a more timeless and friendly vibe. We walked around Hotel Riu Palace and it feels exclusive, empty and sad....like it's trying too hard to look expensive. Riu Playacar is more lively, fun and family friendly. We have a 5 year old with us. Demographics: You will see more South Americans, Argentines, Columbians & rich Mexicans from other parts of the country. There were also lots of Canadians and Europeans. There were only a handful of Americans...the front desk doesn't even change US dollars, only Euros, Pounds and Canadian dollars. Food: Menu changes everyday, its a buffet so don't expect a Michelin star restaurant. We found that the food was good on weekends and dinner time; and we found a variety that everyone can enjoy. I think its more International food and they don't have much Yucatan dishes. They had a variety of tacos throughout the week, but the sauces were not hot enough. Its more for a mild palate ( baby mouth). Definitely kid friendly, my daughter looked forward to the chocolate fountain at dinner. There was a night were they had all kinds of cheese and charcuterie meats. However, not enough vegan or healthy foods were offered. But we enjoyed the tropical fruits every day. For a family traveling for a week, this is a huge deal! If would be expensive if we bought the variety of fruits we ate every day. If you come at the beginning of the buffet, you'll get better food. If you come later, you'll get not so great presentation...like leftovers. So just come early! Beach: Sargassum was every where in May 5-13, 2022; the beach was not swimmable. But we enjoyed the pool, and the kids area. The adult pool can be crowded, but we stayed on the kids area. We also went to Xelha to swim in the lagoon, and occupied our time with day trips. Alcohol: Just do shots if you want to feel something. But the drinks are weak, like other reviews say. Overall: The resort is nice and wholesome. But Mexico is a beautiful country, we explored Playa del Carmen and other attractions. We didn't just stay at the resort, that would be boring! We stayed at Playacar because of safety, no one hassling you to buy stuff at the beach or pool. Its clean and wholesome. The food is decent; we didn't get sick. Covid: During covid, staff were all wearing masks. At the buffet, staff also squirted sanitizer on your hand, before you enter. There is a clinic for covid tests in the Hotel, $25 US for a rapid test per person. Only the Americans were making a big deal about masks. There was one teenager that was cursing because she wasn't allowed at the buffet without a face mask. She came back with a mask from the front desk. Everyone else were complying. At the end of our stay, it seems the mask mandates was lifted, and reception stopped wearing masks. For an all inclusive flight+hotel+food its a very good value. We booked directly with Hotel not thru third party websites. For a family vacation, we had a great time. We learned a lot about Mexico and the Mayan culture and we appreciated what we have at home. We went to Chichen Itza, Tulum, Cozumel, Xcaret and Xelha; and felt Playa del Carmen was very family friendly especially if you stay at Playacar.

View from our ocean view room... worth the extra $100 total dollars!

I can't say enough positive things about Riu Playcar!! From the moment we stepped on the property my boyfriend and I were treated amazingly. Our flight got into Cancun around 10am and Playcar was about an hour south but the hotel allowed us to check in around 12 instead of the 3:00pm usual time. We opted for the ocean view room and let me just tell you, IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! Food and drinks: something for Vegan, vegetarian, keto and every other diet you could need. Breakfast: Buffet offers indoor and outdoor seating and every breakfast item you could ask for. A speciality coffee machine, a variety of freshly squeezed juices, and water with ice that has been purified. Lunch: pool lunch opens at 11:30 and has a variety of options from fruit to burgers. The main buffet opens at 12:30 and has a wide variety too. 4 specialty dinner places (aside from the delicious buffet option)- Mexican, Asian/Indian, Italian, and a steakhouse. The drinks are NOT watered down like other all inclusive resorts. They offer Dos XX and Dos XX ambar and a variety of wines and spirits. The beach is perfect... white sand and clear waters (yes, sometimes seaweed rolls in deep but they clear it out every morning). There are tons of chairs to relax on the beach and by the pools. Not once was there an issue with finding a chair to relax on with an ocean view. There are daily activities for adults and children. Although we didn't bring any tiny humans this time, we did see kids of all ages doing things with the RiuLand staff and it looked like a blast. They take great care of your children!

We stayed here in August of 2017. We started with a bad experience, but when the manager (Filiberto) came to resolve the situation, it got better very quickly. I was initially planning to go to the Hyatt in Cancun. My friend suggested Riu Playacar, because they had been there before. When we checked in, the rooms we had paid for (ocean front) were not ready, so after waiting almost 8 hours they put us in non-ocean facing rooms. After unsuccessfully trying to get results for 30 minutes, I was almost ready to checkout and go to the Hyatt. This is when the manager stepped in. He upgraded us to a suite for the night and said the rooms will be available the next day. He walked all the way down with us and made sure I was content. He came the next day with a porter, transferred our luggage, sent champagne and strawberries, apology letter and phone call follow up to make sure everything was ok. He called again the next day. He also gave my wife and daughter complimentary massage coupons. We saw Filiberto throughout our vacation, at the front desk, the restaurants, poolside, he was everywhere. He is such an asset to Riu. He changed our vacation from a nightmare to a dream. Now about the hotel and the food. The food was so good that although I don't like buffets in general, I was having a problem staying away from this buffet. They have theme based foods that they change to, so it's different every day. Also the daily cook-offs at the beach was so convenient. Being an all-inclusive, they were bringing drinks to the beach without asking, beer, margarita, coke, water juice, etc etc, someone continuously going around with a tray. If you like to drink, you'll be in cloud 9. They have a show every night, the guy that was running the show was hilarious. I suggest you go to the show each night (starts around 9pm). The MC was so talented (don't remember his name, it was something like Valentino) he was so good, entertaining 150 people every night. I'm a life long customer now. I'm planning to go back in a couple of years. I will definitely go back to Riu Playacar, all really because of the fast action of this one manager Filiberto. Actually next year I'm going to Spain and will definitely look for a Riu hotel wherever I find it.

We arranged for the airport travel to/from the resort which was highly recommended. It's about an hour commute and took the stress away from the travel. Our suite was on the bottom floor and walked out to the pool. Complete dream of an experience! Not only did we have "guide" who is essentially an assistant/butler who helped answer our questions quickly, helped to book reservations onsite or book transportation through the resort. They were incredibly responsive. Your main mode of transportation is bikes which feels like you're in another world riding through the jungle on bikes. There's a handful of restaurants on site so we didn't end up leaving the property more than once. From check-in to check-out, Rosy at the front desk was an absolute rock star. She made us feel like we'd never missed a day and went out of her way to ensure every part of our stay was exceptional. Before we even arrived, Suchel was already taking great care of us. She coordinated all of our dinner reservations and continued checking in throughout our stay to make sure everything was going smoothly. Vacation planning doesn't get much easier than that! Then there was Brandon--if he ever runs out of energy, we'll all know the Earth's rotation has stopped. Whether he was leading yoga, stretching, water aerobics, trivia, or simply getting everyone smiling and involved, he brought an infectious enthusiasm to the pool every single day. Speaking of the pool, Henry was there every morning with fresh towels, a huge smile, and somehow remembered our names every single day. It's amazing how something so simple can make you feel so welcome. Although we only had the opportunity to dine at Spices once, it ended up being our favorite meal of the trip. The food was outstanding, and Jorge made the experience even better by turning dinner into a fun Spanish lesson without making it feel like homework. We left with full stomachs and a few new phrases! A big thank you also goes to Juan, who helped make sure our room was still waiting for us despite our delayed arrival. After spending an extra day in airports, that warm welcome meant a lot. One of the highlights of our stay was the Fiesta Mexicano. It was the perfect way to kick off our vacation, with delicious food, fantastic entertainment, and a chance to learn more about the rich history and culture of the region. The resort itself is stunning. The beachfront pool gave us the best of both worlds--pool on one side, Caribbean Sea on the other. Tough decisions were made daily. We also loved the local wildlife. Seeing lizards, coatis, and especially the adorable agoutis wandering peacefully around the grounds made the resort feel even more special. (They were excellent neighbors and never once asked for a drink!) The location was another huge plus. We enjoyed browsing the shops just across the street and loved being only a quick ride from the excitement of Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen. Our room was spotless every day, the minibar and snacks were always replenished, and the evening turndown service was one of those thoughtful touches that made us smile each night. While we've mentioned a handful of amazing people by name, the truth is that every employee we encountered was friendly, warm, professional, and genuinely seemed to enjoy making guests feel welcome. There are simply too many wonderful team members to recognize individually. Royal Hideaway Playacar has beautiful grounds, excellent restaurants, an unbeatable location, and all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury resort. But what truly sets it apart is its people. They don't just provide outstanding service--they create an experience you'll remember long after you've unpacked your suitcase. We arrived a day late...and somehow still left wishing we'd booked another week. That's probably the best compliment we can give. We'll definitely be back!

It is a beautiful resort... quiet as in no daytime music or DJ, guests are more interested in reading and tanning than chatting with each other and everything but one bar and reservation only restaurants close at 8pm. But some of the staff go way above and beyond... Javier the poolside server, Jordan who made the weird activities fun, every room concierge who helped with luggage, the chefs at the hibachi grill, housekeeping and a head of security. If we weren't a fun group of 14 it might have felt slightly like a retirement community.

Disappointing 8 days: Repetitive food and highly frustrating layout for young families…read more We just returned from an 8-day stay at the Riu Palace, and unfortunately, it did not live up to the brand's reputation or our expectations. While the property itself looks nice, the day-to-day experience was incredibly frustrating, particularly when it came to dining and navigating the resort with a young child. The dining situation was a major letdown for an 8-day vacation. Across the board, the food was completely lackluster. The main buffet offered highly redundant options day after day, making mealtime feel like groundhog day. We hoped the specialty à la carte restaurants would offer a step up, but they were entirely subpar. To make matters worse, there was a severe lack of options within those restaurants, leaving us with very few appetizing choices. For a resort of this tier, the quality and variety just aren't there. If you are traveling with toddlers or infants, be warned: this property is not family-friendly in terms of layout. It is incredibly difficult to navigate if you are pushing a stroller, forcing you to take long, out-of-the-way detours just to get around. Furthermore, it is not walker-friendly for little kids who want to stretch their legs. The layout hurdles, steps, and uneven flows made it a constant struggle to keep a walking child safe and moving smoothly. Between eating the same mediocre food for over a week and constantly fighting the resort's layout just to get from our room to the pool or restaurants, our vacation felt more like work than relaxation. We definitely won't be returning.

This ruined our vacation. We paid a lot of money for the Oceanview room. Attached is a picture of the garden view room. This room does NOT even face the ocean! We will NEVER stay at this resort again because they are DISHONEST.

Positive: Welcome:…read moreFrom the moment we arrived, the service made us feel welcome. David checked us in quickly and even gave the kids a "key" bracelet (without the actual key) so they could be part of the process. The step stool at the front desk was a thoughtful touch for little ones to see over the counter. Abi helped us make a restaurant reservation right away and walked us through the resort map--simple things that made settling in much easier. Room: We stayed in the 1100 building, close to both the pool and beach--ideal with small kids. The room was clean, the AC worked great, the shower had strong water pressure, and the balcony was a nice spot to relax. The only minor note was that the outdoor hanger could have used a better dusting. Parents, be mindful of the marble floors; our two-year-old chipped a tooth after running indoors (completely on us, but worth noting). Restaurants: Tulum Buffet: Loved the dedicated kids' section and plastic cups. The food was decent (don't expect a 5-star Vegas buffet), but service here was better than at Cozumel buffet at Quetzal, especially at breakfast. La Hacienda (Smokehouse): Our favorite meal of the trip. Despite mixed reviews online, we found it excellent--great service, tasty dishes, and a kids' menu that impressed even my picky daughter, who asked for seconds on the mac and cheese. Uxmal: Lunch on our first visit was hit-and-miss (good steak and fish, underwhelming tostadas, mid-level service). Our second visit was much better despite a check-in mix-up that sent us to the buffet right before closing. La Gondola: Reservation-only and worth booking. Our server, Cleiner, was fantastic--attentive even with a large party to handle. Highlights included penne Alfredo with shrimp, risotto, margherita pizza, and pizza Quattro carni. Calamari was slightly burnt (I liked it, others didn't). Desserts were all good. Bonsai (Japanese): Great service and fun experience. Food was just okay for me (salty rice, slightly dry sushi), but the kids loved it. Animals: The kids were thrilled spotting various animals around the resort--it added extra magic to our days. Pool: The kids' splash area with the playground next to it was a huge hit. I wish the main pool had more shallow sections, but floaties made it manageable. Negative: Golf Carts: We learned mid-stay that golf carts are mainly for Iberostar members and not guaranteed for non-members (like IHG guests) except at check-in/out for luggage. We sometimes managed to wave one down, but often waited 20-25 minutes for nothing to arrive. Guest services would say one was coming, but it wasn't until we spoke with concierge that we got the real policy. Tip: Reserve a cart for check-out so you know one will arrive. Quetzal Buffet (Monday, Aug 4): Service here was noticeably less attentive than during our first visit. We were seated with crumbs on the chair and sauce on the floor, which no one came to clean despite asking twice. Plastic cups (easy to find at Tucán buffet) were nowhere in sight. After asking four staff members and getting no clear direction, my toddler's patience--and mine--ran out. Thankfully, Leticia, one of the staff, turned things around. She checked in regularly with genuine warmth and attentiveness that was missing from the rest of the experience. She truly salvaged the meal. Overall: Despite a few hiccups, our stay was memorable for the right reasons--warm welcomes, thoughtful touches for kids, standout dining at certain restaurants, and a beautiful, family-friendly setting. We'd return, especially for La Hacienda, the splash area, and the friendly staff who made us feel at home.

It is a huge resort with 18 included restaurants, bars, pools, and beaches. You also have access to all of the different parks which is an amazing perk. Our room was pretty big with two queen beds. It had a jacuzzi and hammock in the balcony. We didn't have a stellar view, but I can only imagine if you did. I also never thought that I would say this, but room service came way too many times. They would come 2 to 3 times a day, and once even asked if we needed room service at 9pm LOL. We mainly ate at the buffet, which did not need a reservation, and it was pretty good. Our overall consensus was that the food here was very diverse and yummy, but was too salty. We don't drink, so I have no comment on that. The infinity pool was pretty nice, but I wish it had a direct view of the beach. There was a river surrounding the hotel, which blocked the view. The beach was pretty accessible though, and the water was very clear. There was a lot of seaweed in it though and it was more rocky than sandy which made it hard to lay our towels down. Overall, though, the service was great and we had a great time here. I would definitely recommend it because we didn't pay for the trip haha.

I was pleasantly surprised how clean the resort is and how courteous the service was. Most employees speak English. I speak Spanish fairly well so I had no issues communicating. There are extensive food options including all day buffets, restaurants, group dining and room service. The buffets lean toward traditional Mexican / Yucatán fare, however, it's not overly spicy. The bakery items are fantastic and not overly sweet. The only Michelin restaurant in Mexico is here at Xcaret. So check that out if you happen to visit here. There are several parks which include water adventures, ATV rentals, zoo & aquariums, history, zip lining etc. I was able to go to the Xplor park for an afternoon when I had some downtime. It was interesting and I had a good time. The cemetery was fascinating. I posted some pictures below. There is no shortage of pools here and every hotel section has its own. The main one that over looks the beach area fills up quick in the am. There are two gyms I believe and a spa which books up quickly so plan in advance. The beach is small and it's a bit of a walk to get to. Chairs and loungers get snapped up quickly early in the day. Security here is "air tight." What I mean the grounds are patrolled by armed guards and there are several checkpoints on the roads going in and out. You have to present your wrist band when entering and leaving with the exception of being on the bus. I was there for a corporate trip and we utilized a rental car to transport our executive staff to and from the airport. Even with the stringent security, the process was fairly easy for us. Checkout is a little odd. You go to the lobby with the letter (bill) that they slide under the door the night before you leave. If you owe nothing, you hand over the letter and wrist band and you're on your way. Large groups that arranged transit via bus was a whole different matter. They had those people wait on long lines to hand over the letter and wrist band and then wait for the bus. It looked a bit convoluted and confusing. Overall I personally had a good experience. The food and service were top notch in my opinion. The time I was able to enjoy the pool and park were nice as well. This was a work related trip and I'll definitely keep it in mind for a future vacation.

Do NOT Book Your Wedding Here…read more They turned our wedding week (March 14 Wedding) into a nightmare so I want to warn every couple considering Mahekal for their wedding. What should have been the most magical week of our lives was repeatedly hijacked by the gross incompetence and dishonest practices of this resort's wedding team. And to be clear - we had a separately hired a wedding planner because by November we already knew Mahekal was not providing any support. We went into our wedding week thinking everything was settled without any warning of all the problems Mahekal was going to spring on us: - They lost track of $10,000 which we paid over SIX MONTHS ago. Totally unaccounted for in their system and we had to prove our payment history while onsite for our wedding. - They attempted to charge a $7,000+ penalty, claiming our room block had not been fulfilled through the code. We blocked 40 rooms and had 107 guests staying on property. We had to spend hours cross referencing the list they had which they didn't even have prepared for our meeting, with our list of guests which we had given them. We lost 4 hours to prove their botched webpage caused this issue. - What is truly unforgivable is Mahekal had an entire month after the room block deadline to communicate these issues to us. Instead, they waited until we arrived for our wedding to spring these problems on us due to their poor mgmt. We spent hours each day on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, AND Friday trying to clean up their messes, ruining our moods and taking time away from family and friends. - The front desk charged us $930 for an upgrade that was explicitly supposed to be complimentary. When we checked in they didn't even have us noted as the wedding couple and did absolutely nothing special for us - no rose petals, no welcome gift, nothing but headaches. When I brought the upgrade charge up to Laura, the in-house "wedding coordinator," she showed me on her monitor that their system had the upgrade documented as FREE... I showed her the additional $930 charge on my credit card. She took over a day to find the charge in their system and promised to work with the front desk to return this but has not responded to me or my wedding planner when we followed up. - We didn't get an adequate room even with the purchased upgrade so I couldn't take any getting ready photos. When we toured they showed a room with a living room which was not made available to me. Total bait and switch. I spent 9am to 1:30pm of my wedding day with just vendors because of this... They also do NOT have a bridal suite which is another sign they are not equipped to handle weddings. - I specifically and clearly requested mahi mahi NOT be served as the fish entrée option at our wedding and Laura said she would work with the chef... At our reception I took a bite of the fish and informed my husband it was mahi mahi and he gave me half his chicken... - For our welcome party, we were charged $450 for three infused water dispensers, a "water bar" we had approved for our outdoor cocktail hour (where it made sense given the heat despite the open bar). Instead, Mahekal applied it to the wrong event entirely; the welcome party which was hosted in a covered space with fans (La Cocina) for which we were already paying for a three-hour open bar. I didn't even see this water bar but whether it was there or not, they scammed us out of $450 because they can't even track a single add-on without messing up. - It's obvious now that we were shown updated rooms when we toured a year before our wedding. What we actually arrived to were cracked floors, broken AC, and toilets with rusted flush buttons. We stayed at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, an actual 5-star resort, for 3 nights after our wedding to decompress from the stress Mahekal had caused. Mahekal felt like a beach motel in comparison. Mahekal is not just incompetent, they are predatory: waiting until you are emotionally and logistically vulnerable so they can hold one of the most important events of your life hostage. The individuals responsible for this horrible experience were Laura Elena Castellanos Patino and Maria Elena Armenta. The only thing I wish for them is Karma. Thankfully, we ended up having a wonderful wedding reception thanks to friends and family, and those memories are slowly replacing our horrible encounters with the resort staff.

The biggest letdown was…read morethe buffet -- very underwhelming food, repetitive options, and not what you would expect from a resort at this price point. Every day we hoped it would improve, and every day it was the same disappointment. The only saving grace of the entire stay was the poolside food and the service there, especially Armando, our poolside server, who was amazing. He was attentive, friendly, and provided the best service we experienced the entire trip. Unfortunately, that was the only consistently positive part of the experience. Another major issue: there is a large family of raccoons living on the property, and they fight loudly over food at night. This isn't a small nuisance -- it kept multiple members of our family awake across several rooms. On top of that, Friday night there was a rave next door that played music until 6 a.m., and again, no one in our group could sleep. For a resort that's supposed to be relaxing, this was unacceptable. Also, be aware there are no TVs in the rooms and there is basically no entertainment around the pools. There was a speaker out there at times, but it was inconsistent on what days it was even set up, and when it was, the music was very low and you could barely hear it. The resort felt very quiet and honestly a bit boring because of this. Fuego restaurant was just okay -- not terrible, but nothing memorable and definitely not enough to make up for the rest of the food on the property. The icing on the cake was checkout. They literally radio someone to go check your room to see if you took any minibar items before you can leave -- and what were they checking for? A small bottle of Evian water. It felt cheap and tacky and was a very disappointing way to end the trip. Overall, this resort did not live up to expectations, and I would not stay here again. There are far better options in the area for the price.

The friendly staff, the (mostly) all-inclusive menus, the swim-up bar, the king size beds. All good stuff. But for what you pay, and the fact that they put themselves out there as a five-star resort, I have to say, "Well maybe a 5* resort circa 1983. The rooms are definitely showing their age, totally lacking in electrical outlets for charging your gadgets, and the general ambiance is simply a bit below what you'd expect at that price point at any number of newer resorts on the Riviera Maya. We also agreed to take the "1-hour meeting" with Exotic Travel with the prospect of enjoying reduced rates in the future. The "no-pressure" pitch suddenly became very HIGH pressure at about the 90-minute mark at which point we decided to cut our losses. Seems they didn't want us to go back to our loungers to chat with other guests who've been a bit less than satisfied with their Exotic Travel investments. Hmmmm.... Will we go back? Probable. If we can get a decent rate without making a 10 year commitment.
