If you're looking for a hotel that is pleasing to the senses this is the place to stay. It looks great, it feels great, it even smells great. The old historical vibe is ideal for anyone looking to escape the run of the mill vibes of the big hotel chains. I definitely recommend this hotel, go just for the freshly baked pastries if not for anything else. Delicious! I've stayed here several times and have consistently had an outstanding experience!

After a wonderful stay at Hotel Ruby Marie, I think it's safe to say that I don't believe i'll ever stay anywhere else when i'm in Madison. It's not often you find a hotel with such character and charm as the Ruby Marie, without the heavy pricetag. The hotel is really run much like a bed and breakfast or a traditional Inn. First off, it should be noted that it is independently owned and operated so you if you're into all that Hilton or bestwestern tomfoolery, the laid-back and relaxed vibe of this place might not suite you. When you enter, it may very well be that the guy running the front desk is also scrubbing toilets. The hotel itself is ancient, but with a somewhat recent overhaul, the rooms are excellent. The bed was large and comfortable, the rooms were extremely clean and the bathrooms were very nicely equipped with quality high-pressure showers. And as if it couldn't get any better??! It does! The owner also owns, well, basically the entire row of businesses surrounding the hotel. Consequently, on the weekends you get a complimentary breakfast from the 'Comeback Inn.' I'm not talking some crusty muffins...you get to choose whatever you want on the menu! Wait! There's more! Each person also get's two free drinks downstairs at the 'Up North bar'. Talk about value. Hilton couldn't shake a stick at that! A highly recommended spot.

This is the train that goes right past the hotel. In this case at 6 am.

The Hotel Ruby Marie is a former neighborhood blight that was carefully restored to its original charm. If you like staying in unique places -- or hate staying in institutional hotels -- then this might be the place for you. A one bedroom was about $149 before taxes, so this was more on the high end for hotels that you might be able to find. The good ------------ The location is easy walking distance to the capital and a number of great hotels. There is lots of free parking The hotel itself does have unique decor. The wifi works great. The staff is very friendly. I saw no issues with the service. It was excellent. Hotel is clean. Bathroom/hot water/etc has no issues. The bad ----------- If you have noise issues, then this is really not the hotel for you. Two sides of the building face busy roads. Although the hotel was nicely renovated, it was not soundproofed. If you are placed on the side with the lake view, you can see a lake, but you mostly see traffic. This also includes train tracks about 40 feet from the building and a very loud train came by at 12:30 am and again at 6 am. You will also constantly hear cars, buses, trucks. Some people just don't have noise issues, so this isn't a problem. Another solution is to ask to be placed in other part of the building (this wasn't an option for me because the hotel was full, but you might request these when you book). Several rooms, I believe, look into a small internal courtyard, so have no view, but are possibly quiet. Other rooms overlook the parking lot, and are probably quieter. After one night I checked out. They were very gracious about it. I mention the noise because it was a problem for me, especially after traveling. For you, maybe this just isn't an issue. Enjoy your stay!

I am a huge fan of B&B's, especially those of the vintage and Victorian variety, so naturally when I was researching places to stay for my brief Madison getaway, Hotel Ruby Marie definitely caught my eye! It's so charming and well maintained for a building of its age! It's not a cookie-cutter-corporate hotel. And compared to the hotels in the surrounding area, it's a bargain to stay for one night! My check-in and check-out interactions went smoothly and were very pleasant. The room was tidy and I appreciated the small details--a secretary desk for addressing a few quick post cards to pals, a vintage feel to the toilet--a high placed tank and long chain for flushing, and of course a tub with Jacuzzi jets which came in handy for unwinding after my evening exploration! Other pros include: the free drink vouchers for happy hour at the Up North Bar (which in itself is a real gem--a fine and interesting mix of pleasant folks, live music in the evenings, great bar tenders), the location of the hotel downtown (it was just a few minutes walk to breathtaking scenery by the lake, fine dining, and the venue of the concert I was attending later in the evening) and in-room fridges (which had complimentary water but were otherwise empty, leaving plenty of room for leftovers--I hate when the fridge is packed with mini-bar options and leaves no room for items you may bring back to the room/have brought with you). There are just a handful of cons though; nothing was a big enough deal-breaker that I wouldn't stay again, but I would like to make note of them. Previous reviewers have mentioned the noise issue: depending on where you're located in the hotel, it is possible to hear noise from the Up North Bar and their nightly musical guests; I could hear them when traveling about the hotel but not from my room. What I COULD hear from my room (which faced the lakeside) were the trains as the tracks practically run right below your window. It was difficult to sleep uninterrupted, particularly around 3 am as that seems to be prime time for train travel through this area. I'd advise some earplugs if you find yourself in one of these rooms. Also, when I booked my room a month or so ago, I was delighted to hear that I'd be staying in a lakeside room, but as you'll note in the photos accompanying this review, the view is more of the traffic surrounding the hotel than the lake. I came to Madison to explore though, not to laze about in my room and unwind, so I wasn't super bummed about the view, but I definitely wouldn't make it sound like a treat to staying in the room I occupied. My biggest gripe was the breakfast. I've stayed in many a B&B and breakfast is the star of the show, usually. Not so with the Ruby Marie. It's more continental style, rather than made-to-order and it was mostly baked goods and cereal and under-ripe fruit. I had high hopes for the savory pastries as they appeared to be the only warm options, but it was obvious they'd been reheated and not thoroughly. After a raucous night of concert going and then staying up in the Up North Bar, I definitely would have appreciated tucking into something warmer and substantial (though I guess late night shenanigans aren't on the ticket for most week-day guests but hey...). To make a long story short, I'll definitely be back if I find myself in Madison again, just maybe with some ear plugs in hand and alternative breakfast plans... But I'll definitely stay at the Ruby Marie!

I had a great stay in this historic hotel in Madison, Wisconsin.  I had a late check in and found everything ready for me upon my arrival.  The hotel is over 150 years old and possesses a classic yet modern feel.  There is a bar within the hotel where a live band was playing.  Also, there is a great restaurant within the property providing traditional German food, which is quite deliciously prepared.   Though the hotel is over 150 years old it is extremely well kept.  The room itself was beautifully decorated and had a flat screen tv, free wi-fi, a very comfortable bed, and modern aminities, while still having the classic feel in the furniture and room layout.   I look forward to visiting this place again in the near future and enjoying all that it has to offer once again!!

The room was clean and had a rustic modern feel. When the carpet is beige, you know they have to take care of it consistently. Everything had a plush feel. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and a handheld. There's a scent that emanates throughout the hotel and into your room. It's light and adds to the ambiance. It's also in the sheets and linen too. I guess that adds to one of the negatives I list later in that the HVAC seems to be centrally controlled. There was some very minor debris in the sink that may have been left from wiping of a dirty rag, but that was mostly it. Gym was nice and parking was plentiful and free. What I didn't like: - Mini fridge in the room had a lot of snacks and other drinks that I assume were for sale. I usually pack my own food, so those items took up some space in the fridge - I get cold easily, so I try to adjust the thermostat, but it's centrally controlled, which I've never seen... I'm assuming all of the rooms are regulated in this way... - Breakfast bar- had bare minimal which I really don't mind. I really wouldn't expect a place like this to serve you breakfast unless it was full service. Would definitely come back

But their local shuttle came in clutch for the ride there! Didn't love the front desk person with glasses and no name tag talk to us condescendingly about the shuttle for after our show. We weren't demanding it, we were asking what to do about potentially getting it because we didn't know how long the show would be. Aidan at check in was helpful and efficient, though I'm not quite sure what was an "upgrade" about our room. It was certainly nice, but judging from the pictures on the website, definitely still just a "room" and not a "suite," as there was no couch. The decor was very lovely and everything was in excellent condition, too. The bathroom was perfect for two people and the shower was excellent as well. The elevator could be a little slow, so if you can, consider taking the stairs as you'll definitely save some time especially if it's busy. The light up sign as you exited the elevator showing the time of day was very cool and I enjoyed getting to see it lit up in two different combinations. Gym is in great condition and very spacious, too! All in all, a worthy entry in terms of Madison hotels.

Normally it's much more reasonable, though. Parking was a little confusing at first since it's not super clear where to go, but when I called the hotel, the staff was friendly and explained we could park in the garage behind the building for $20 a night through the hotel. Super easy once we found it, and I liked that you can use your key card for in-and-out access. Check-in was smooth and I loved they have a texting option if you need anything during your stay, very convenient! The room itself was clean, fresh, and had a few little surprises. I genuinely thought I was hearing music from the other room when I turned on the shower, but it turns out there's a bar in the shower that plays music when the water hits it, such a relaxing, spa-like touch. The TV even had a personalized welcome screen with my name, and as a rewards member, the late checkout was a super nice perk. The robes were clean, cozy, and perfect for lounging while getting ready. Location-wise, it's perfect! Right downtown and close to plenty of bars, restaurants, the capitol, and the Orpheum Theatre where we were going to. Uber and Lyft were easy to get, but the hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle service within a 3-mile radius, which is such a nice option. We didn't get to use it this time since it was first come, first serve, and even with scheduling the shuttle, timing didn't work out for us with their logistics and the game, but I love that they have it as a complimentary option. Security felt great too, the doors lock after a certain hour and require a key card for entry. In-room amenities were solid: a Nespresso for coffee, a spacious antique-style fridge, and the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable! I slept so well. There were a couple minor hiccups, the streaming on the TV had audio issues (the front desk mentioned it's been an ongoing problem), and the small mirror light in the bathroom kept shutting off, but those were easy to overlook. We ended up getting the audio working. Overall, the room was spacious, stylish, and thoughtfully designed, with a separate workspace, a lounging area, and a fun mix of vintage and modern decor. Loved the artwork, neon touches, and overall vibe. It was clean, safe, and full of personality. Definitely a spot I'd stay at again next time I'm in Madison!

The staff was very friendly, but our visit started off on a concerning note. When we were checking in, the gentleman at the front desk told me that the pool had failed inspection and that there would be another inspection the next day, so hopefully it would be open that afternoon the next day. Already gross if you can't pass inspection and a bad first impression. When we walked down to our room, there were empty Amazon boxes littering common areas. This place could be featured on hotel hell if it was still running/producing seasons. I was really disappointed with our room. I absolutely LOVE the idea of themed rooms, but ours clearly hadn't been serviced in a long time. It smelled horribly musty, the bed was so thin and uncomfortable that we could feel the wood frame underneath, and the bathroom was gross. My back was really sore in the morning, and it was not a good way to start off a day of hiking. The wallpaper was all peeling and it's clear this room hasn't really been updated in a while. We didn't feel comfortable touching the carpet so we wore our crocs the whole time we were there. Breakfast was mediocre at best. The arm of my chair also broke off as I was trying to pull it into the table. The biscuits and gravy were very cafeteria like and I didn't even want to touch the eggs because they came in the weird shaped circles like the kind you get from McDonald's. My stomach felt really bad after eating breakfast both times so l don't recommend eating breakfast, even if it is included. I lived in a dorm for three years at school, so I'm pretty used to less than ideal conditions, but this even grossed me out. It's clear this place has a lot of really cool history, but it reached its peak a long time ago and I'm sad I wasn't able to see it in its prime. I would've loved to come back, but not for $180 dollars a night. Taxes and fees came to nearly $100, so for two nights and three days we payed $464. 400+ dollars and we didn't even feel comfortable taking our shoes off? Not worth it. As much as I love the themed suite ideas, don't waste your money to get terrible food and dirty rundown rooms.

Bathroom wasn't ideal for me - couldn't see to go in - needs a night light or something - very dark; the main switch is almost behind the door when it is open. Besides that, everything was excellent.
