I am actually kind of surprised that this is a 5 star hotel. It seems more like a 4 star and it's not too great. The other 5 star hotels we have stayed in seem to go above and beyond in pretty much every way, especially when the rate is almost $500 a night. The Hotel Splendide Royal didn't really do anything for us. Here was our experience. My husband called in advance to let them know it was our honeymoon and asked if I could spend more and upgrade the room. Their response was that we were already in an amazing room and we should rest assured that it would be special. Well, our room on the first two nights was far from amazing. It was a second story unit that faced a wall complete with a family doing their laundry most of the night. It wasn't a good view or even really acceptable for a 5 star hotel. We kind of assumed there we no "bad" rooms in such an expensive hotel but we were wrong. On our last night, they moved us up to a room with a view but it was almost too little, too late. While that room was nice, we were pretty burnt out with this place at this time. They also gave us a dozen roses which were clearly recycled from something else, maybe the lobby? Overall, if you are looking for a high-end hotel, go elsewhere for sure. Also, wifi is horrendous! Don't expect to ever be able to make a call on it.

We had drinks with friends at the hotel rooftop bar and it was, as the name says, splendid! And the staff was magnificent. Especially John Marco who made us feel so welcome! He danced with women at the tables, took photos for us and made everyone feel like they were his best long lost friends. Bravo!

The Hotel Splendide Royal in Rome is rated as a luxury five star hotel, with some justification. Located in the upper reaches of central Rome, it's a short walk to the smart shopping district around Via Condotti, as well as all the main sights of Rome. Situated in what was once the palatial headquarters of Rome's Maronite (Lebanese Christians) community it's a stroll away from the Via Veneto. On arrival we were checked in, in English, very swiftly and smoothly. We were shown to our room, a palatial twin room with en-suite, walk in wardrobe and all the facilities you'd expect . . . and more. We settled in and then hit the town. Rome is fabulous destination for short breaks, it has none of the pretentiousness of Milan or the chaos and 'attitude' of Naples; I guess the city and it's inhabitants have had a few years' practice at being comfortable with themselves! The next morning began with an outrageous breakfast on the top floor with views over Rome and the Vatican City. Outrageous because of the quality and variety of food on offer. With at least 10 waiting staff on hand too, one didn't have to struggle to get attention either. On returning later in the day, the room was perfectly turned out, the bathroom refreshed and a note left for us, 'Was there anything that we needed? Ironing, dry cleaning, shoes polished? We just had to ask.' The beds had been turned down and there was a bowl of fresh fruit on the table at the other end of the room, with bottles of water and glasses. We stayed for a total of five nights, with each night more comfortable than the last! The breakfasts just got better and the service friendlier and ever more generous with each passing day, and we weren't staying in the smartest suite either! We loved it.

That made the location extremely convenient. The hotel sits a short walk from Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Francis is buried. Some areas near the main train station are often described as unsafe by Italian standards. We did not experience that near the hotel. Tourists and locals were out late, and the neighborhood stayed active into the evening. Rome is compact and easy to navigate. Most major attractions felt reachable within about 20 minutes by taxi, bus, or rail. We tried to visit the Trevi Fountain at 10:00 pm to avoid crowds. That plan failed completely(see pic). It was packed. Locals eat later than in the U.S., and many parts of the city stay busy well into the night. Restaurants remain open late. A note for U.S. travelers. European hotel rooms run smaller for the price. Even using Hilton points, our room would have cost close to $700 per night USD and felt small. The hotel offers a pleasant rooftop bar and a spacious lobby with multiple seating areas. The buffet breakfast was a solid, comfortable way to start the day. It was included for us as Hilton Diamond members. I am unsure of the cash price. Overall, the location and amenities make this a smart pre-cruise choice, especially for travelers relying on rail connections.

We were able to walk to great shopping, restaurants and sites, including the colosseum and Trevi fountain. Clean accommodations and friendly staff. With jet lag, our sleep schedule was sporadic. Pro tip: Ironing boards/iron not in room and must be requested via Front Desk. However, you can have up to TWO items pressed daily Free. I deducted one star because our bed was lumpy - time to switch out the mattress! And be sure to request a room on floors 1-3. The fourth floor is right below the gym and very noisy during gym hours.

However, it is quietly nestled in a beautiful little neighborhood. It is very quiet and quaint. Upon arrival we were greeted with the welcoming staff and escorted into the ruins beyond the lobby where we were brought a lovely tiramisu welcome treat to enjoy while taking in the ruins. The room is impressively large with a huge bathroom. We had a plush king sized bed with cozy down bedding. The thick beautiful curtains ensured that the room was perfectly dark for great sleep even if we wanted a mid day nap. There was a lovely little balcony with a view of the courtyard. With the curtains open the natural light is perfect. The bed was comfortable and we Sisto very nicely here. The bathroom is very big with a walk in shower and bidet with all toiletries needed to have a comfortable stay. I will say I was a bit bummed that the tile warmer was not functional but the hotel was very kind offering anything to make sure that we were happy. This was not a problem and we stayed in this room as warming towels us a perk but not a requirement. I would also note that the building is quite old and the bathroom had a metallic smell perhaps from the pipes of older plumbing but it was fine as long as we kept the bathroom door closed. I think the hotel was really concerned that we were upset but we absolutely were not just keep in mind this building is antique and if you are coming from the US where everything is new and not used to a potential aroma of antiquity be prepared to experience a true European city and do not complain. All details are thought of here including mini bar, clothes steamer, hair dryer, toiletries and a welcome gift. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They are always ensuring that we were comfortable and happy. We absolutely loved our stay here. The hotel is a special place and experience. The nostalgia of standing and staying where the Romans once stood 2000 years ago was definitely a treat! The hotel has a rooftop terrace where we enjoyed breakfast in the mornings and wine in the evening. The lounge just inside of the terrace is cozy and comfortable to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail in the evening and there's a cozy fireplace to warm up, which we took full advantage of after a long wet rainy day in the colosseum and Roman forum. We had a great stay here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special Roman experience. We will definitely be back!
