To me, this Houndstooth location sums up Austin perfectly. Having lived in and around Dallas/Fort Worth for the past five years, I had just started taking it as a given that a bank tower's ground floor coffee shop is a Starbucks. It's so refreshing to finally see an amazing local coffee shop in a great location. Having only been to this location once and on a Friday, I don't know if my experience was typical. Given my experience with their location on Lamar, I have a feeling that this one stays really busy all day. If you want your pick of Tacodeli breakfast taco, get here early. When I was here just after 8, they had already sold out of most of them. I tried the Japanese Iced Coffee which was the first time I have seen this type of iced coffee on a menu here in Texas. Houndstooth knocked it out of the park. I'm not a huge iced/cold brew coffee fan, but when it's 90+ outside, this will definitely be added to my coffee rotation. read more

Came here while wondering the streets of Austin alone one morning. Had the centro americano, iced espresso honey cinnamon rice milk plum and lemon I believe? It did not disappoint! When I read that Houndstooth beat out Patika for best coffee in Austin, I HAD to check them out. The service was good, but the coffee fell short of expectations. Don't get me wrong, their espresso is still much better than Austin's chain coffee shops. But with Patika just down the street, the only real reason I would visit Houndstooth again is its ample seating. read more

Very friendly baristas. I had the cold brew, and it was a little weaker than my usual taste, but still greater. The self service station for sugar or milk was very small and only served 1 person at a time. There was not even room to put my coffee down. The station also only has raw sugar, which is great to add to coffee, but does not dissolve at all for colder mixes. Nevertheless, the baristas were very great and refilled the half and half container as soon as they spotted me. She even went looking for me after she refilled it since I returned to my table. I was lucky enough to come before the rush, but the line can be 10-15 people long as quite the wait it seems. It was a great atmosphere to work though, and fun to enjoy while maintaining productivity. read more

I went to houndstooth coffee at 10am on a Saturday morning, it wasn't busy so we ordered a couple of pour over coffees and 3 tacos. The guy working the espresso machine was really friendly and clearly trying to be accommodating to us. I'm willing to bet this was a once off since theres so many great reviews but our experience was not good at all. The woman making the pour over coffee's spent a lot of time talking to the people at the bar at the expense of making our coffees. I would have no problem if she was working and talking, but we waited at the bar for a while until it became clear that she was going to be working VERY slowly (stopping preparing our coffees in order to talk) so we sat down to eat our tacos. The tacos were unbelievably soft and gross, as if they'd been sitting too hot for hours in the warmer. We finally got our two coffees around 10 mins after ordering them and they were good, though not worth the wait. Would probably have been a different experience had we ordered espresso drink as the guy was working fast and was super friendly All in all, 18$ for 3 tacos, 2 coffees and a long wait. Will not go out of my way to visit again. read more

On the way walking to a restaurant in the area, I was very intrigued by the look of Houndstooth. My husband and I made it a point to stop back by after our breakfast. In fact I didn't get my usual chai latte at the place we were having breakfast so I could have one here instead. I can see this being a place I'd spend a lot of time at if I lived or went to school here. It has a modern, sleek yet still comfortable atmosphere. Both of the baristas we interacted with were incredibly friendly. My chai latte was perfect and very strong on the chai flavor, stronger than most I've had. I pass by this joint every single day and I've been in three times (today being the third). I doubt I'll return. I always order the same thing -- a chai latte. And it always tastes... off. The first couple of times, it was noticeable, but not overwhelming; I thought maybe it was just me, or the manufactured cup, or just a different chai base than what I'm used to. But today? Yikes! I've taken two sips and cannot even finish it. I can't find the words to describe the taste, but it's highly assertive and... bitter? Medicinal? It tastes like cleaning solution, and is lukewarm to boot. I generally order a pastry to go along with my chai, and I can say that their cinnamon pull-apart is pretty good. The croissant, however, is very flaky but not terribly buttery; overall, not particularly craveable, as a good croissant should be. Perhaps things would be different if I switched to coffee, but as a few others have stated, the prices tend to keep me from wanting to experiment. A small chai, croissant and cinnamon pastry (the size of a muffin) were $10 and change. That's a bit steep for a mid-morning pick-me-up. read more

Amazing delicious coffee. I'm visiting from San Francisco for SXSW and love their cups so much that I bought a set of cappuccino cups for $40 (crazy, right?) My only beef with this place is that it's too expensive. I paid $6 for a regular soy latte (wha??) but the baristas and the cashiers are all super friendly and even though the line is long they'll take a few seconds out to talk to every single customer. Also I love the fact that they serve you a shot of Pellegrino water with espresso shots. I have an Italian family so I love this very European touch. Espresso done right! read more

I work in the frost tower so this place is convenient.. Went one day . trying to get breakfast tacos before I opened - had to run back couple times. FINALLY on 3rd try they had breakfast tacos.. I got one bean and cheese - except mine had no beans, and I ordered a Potato egg and cheese - that one had no potato.. not sure WHO cooked that day but pretty disappointed waste of 5.00, plus the fact i already walked over 3 times.. So my husband and I lived in Austin for 3 years and every time we went downtown (at night), Houndstooth was closed. We were so intrigued by the name that we just had to go there one day. Well visiting our friends one week and made a stop during business hours. It definitely didn't disappoint. At first, I was a little nervous (I'm actually not a coffee drinker) and thought they wouldn't have anything for me but I ordered some blueberry tea which was AMAZING. They also had Taco Deli breakfast tacos which sold out pretty quickly. The customer service was fantastic and I loved their rustic vibe. Oh, and my husband said their lattes were delish. This is excellent coffee, prepared carefully by people who love the stuff. The new downtown location is fantastic - comfortable and open, good wifi connection and lots of options for standing if you are going there to work for a while and prefer to stand rather than sit. All of the employees have been super-friendly and there's a rotating cast from the 42nd street store. I think people get put off at coffee shops (in general) because either the culture is a little intimidating and it tends to look like there is an "in crowd" of regulars and employees - I've never seen anyone at this shop be the least bit snobbish or unfriendly and they are eager to talk about whatever they are serving, even if you are new to the world of high-quality coffee. read more
