I asked David to help me replace an existing light with a ceiling fan. Mind you, I am a DIY-kinda gal and when he first quoted me $250/hr I was very skeptical....I looked on Taskrabbit and other sites to see if someone would be cheaper. It turns out that installing a ceiling fan in our 90 year old house wasn't very straightforward - there was a double ceiling, existing light was not actually attached to a beam, etc. David ended up having to make a large hole in the ceiling and other modifications to install the fan safely and properly. They also plastered/sanded/painted the ceiling and it looks great, like new! He was very professional and punctual. He & his workers were respectful of my home and cleaned up after themselves. You can probably find a college student to help you with simple tasks for lesser quality & price. David may seem expensive, but you will be happy with his work, especially for more complicated work on older homes. read more

I didn't actually use the services of this company, so I cannot comment on the quality of their work. However, the communication is terrible. I've been in contact with David via email and telephone for weeks and he cannot find the time (after repeated requests) to look at his calendar and schedule a time to stop by for an estimate, even after I spent significant time taking and sending photos with detailed descriptions of the work needed. I wish I hadn't wasted my time and do not recommend this company. If you don't have availability, say so from the get-go rather than wasting people's time. We had a spigot in our backyard that couldn't provide enough water to run a power washer. We knew it wasn't the power washer, or even the lines, because the front spigot worked great. We brought David out to take a look, and he diagnosed it immediately - the spigot was cracked! He fixed it and even moved it to a more convenient spot, repairing and painting the drywall as needed! The other thing we really appreciated about David is he walked through what he was doing and why, and what that meant in terms of maintaining the spigot - things like how to properly winterize the pipes and how to best avoid a similar crack in the future. I had a leak from the bottom of my garbage disposal and reached out to David about a repair or replacement. He was very responsive to me over Yelp and gave me a four hour window for just a couple of days later. He arrived on time, assessed the situation, and made a recommendation quickly. In the end I think the service was worth the price. My recommendation to others would be to look at purchasing a garbage disposal in advance and asking if David can install it - it cost ~$80 more from David than from Amazon. I am not sure what local hardware stores charge. The convenience of having this taken care of today was worth the price to me, though - no two trips for David, no two days out of the office for me. They came and had all of the tools and parts required to handle it today. My only gripe is that David does not accept personal checks and that is not clear to me from his Yelp page. He prefers cash or credit card which was difficult for me as a landlord without a business credit card - it may not be as big of a deal to others. Overall I would recommend others reach out to David for plumbing issues. I will most likely return to him as well. read more

I called the night before for a garbage disposal issue that I had underneath my sink. I scheduled an appointment for the next day, which I was grateful for because of the short turnaround. They called 30 minutes beforehand letting me know that they were arriving, and then again when they had arrived. They came in, explained the contract/prices, and fixed the issue with no problem. I am disappointed to have to write this review, especially when this business has such good reviews otherwise. I had an awful experience with Capitol Handyman and would not recommend using them. I hired Capitol Handyman to fix my shower knob because it had fallen off. My shower was otherwise working fine and had solid water pressure. They replaced the knob ($250 installation, I bought the part myself for $100) and told me that I needed to add sealant to showers in my house. I paid them $290 to put sealant on two showers and a bathtub. I thought it was very steep, but the plumbers seemed ok so I went along. After they installed the knob, David called me to the bathroom to check the water pressure. Since they just put in sealant, he said he couldn't turn on the full shower head and just showed me the water coming from a second shower head into a bucket. I couldn't tell if it was how it was before, but it looked alright and I trusted them (I also didn't see how it would be broken now), so let them go on their way. 24 hours later, I tried the shower and it was completely broken. Almost no water came out of the main shower head. I was surprised since it worked perfectly fine before Capitol Handyman came over. I asked them to come back to take a look. When they did, David did nothing to try to fix it. David started yelling at me to the point where my roommate came out of his room to make sure I was ok. I had not raised my voice at all at David and did not during the course of our conversation. He said that he thought the pressure was bad after they "fixed" it, which is why he asked me in the first place. It seemed like he was covering his tracks. It felt like he knew something went wrong during his installation and he didn't want to admit it. Instead of trying to fix anything or make recommendations on what to do, he just blamed me for not catching the bad water pressure in the first place. I was stunned. I went from a shower with a broken handle to a broken shower. Perhaps we could have communicated and figured out a way to fix the problem. But I am not in the business of paying hundreds of dollars to have someone come into my home and yell at me, especially when I did nothing wrong. Instead, I paid Capitol Handyman almost $600 to make a problem worse. read more
