Great food, great service, fun ambiance. I would recommend the restaurant to all my friends

Ok so tried this place 3 times before leaving a review... still need to try this place on the weekend. It's black owned in Roselle Park NJ. It's a Nigerian, Caribbean, Latin, European infused theme restaurant. Definitely touches on different cultures. The staff is very friendly, the bartenders Natalie and Miguel are amazing and make great drinks. The service is a bit slow, but not horrible. They can get better with this. They definitely need a dedicated greeter/hostess at the front, but they are new so hopefully this will be addressed. The need bar hooks for purses. The atmosphere/look is great look. Definitely has IG worthy backdrops for pictures. Food: I loved the grilled shrimp avocado wrap - straight up bomb! The mango lobster ceviche is delicious! The lobster mac n cheese is good too The wings are fried (wingettes) hard which i like and you can get different dipping sauces The grill branzino is good. I need to try the fried version to see what it is. The grill beef kabab - nah this wasn't it! It was overcooked and cover in sauce.... They need to try again with this one. This is the only thing so far that I didn't like. Ordered the Griyo to go, I hope to gwah it's good... Haitian ppl will judge them... since this is a heavily Haitian community in Roselle... It's moderately priced.(3 drinks, 1 app, 1 entree will cost you about $100 to $140 with tip) It's not a long wait for food, but it doesn't come out quickly depending on what you order. They give you bread if you order... to hold you over it's good, toasted with butter. Happy Hour is from 4-6pm during the week. It should be a bit longer....maybe to 7 or 8pm I try to make it afterwork but still miss it. Thursdays are Karaoke night. Overall, I will come back. read more

Let me start off by saying all 3 of the southern chicken entrees were under cooked. This should never happen. Especially if you are using a thermometer to check the temperature of the meat being cooked. Someone could have gotten sick. We sent the food back weary of what would return. The hostess said they would make us all a fresh batch of food but my thought was what was the alternative? She also mentioned our food would be pushed up in queue however there was no compensation. Not even an offer of extra free bread while we waited or any interest to find out how we enjoyed our food when it came out. Burger was too salty. Salmon was not blackened nor Cajun. Steak was subpar in quality especially for the price. Initially water was given to the table, tap water, and the glasses for 10 were not even half full. They only brought out one small bottle. I felt as if we were constantly advocating for ourselves for lack of attentiveness. Maybe they are short staff but then larger parties maybe should not be taken as reservations. 2 stars for what was good: Ambiance Drinks Mac and Cheese Collard Greens Bread Overall employees were nice If Managers check on guests this can help negate some of these negative reviews. Also make customers who may have a bad experience feel appreciated and try to rectify the situation even if that eats into the bottom line initially. You don't want one timers But return customers so it's worth the initial investment vs getting bad reviews and people not returning. Also happy customers tip better which makes staff happier. Hoping you will listen to some of the feedback that has been given overall so your business can grow and scale. This place has potential but will not last unless some adjustments are made. read more

This review is solely based on customer service. I love to support black owned businesses and saw this restaurant on instagram and decided to inquiry about booking one of their private spaces for a birthday. Their initial response was timely and I appreciated that they suggested I view the space in person before submitting a deposit. But it went sour after that. After providing my availability to discuss further, I had to reach out a second time before receiving a confirmation and then she informed me that the space we initially agreed would be available is no longer available. Because we were still in contact, the business had all the information regarding my booking request and the rep confirmed that we could still go in to meet, I followed up by asking to clarify by providing more information for what other spaces would be available for my party size. The business's final response did not include an apology for initially agreeing to accept my booking then randomly declining and it was also snarky and unhelpful. The rep responded to state that their regular dining space accommodate smaller groups and I can make a reservation on their site. I felt the way the situation was handled was unprofessionally. If I was communicating with the owner, shame on you because you should know the importance of building relationships. If this was an event coordinator and the owner see this, Esther needs more customer service training. read more

The service at House 157 was superb as our party of 11 was accommodated quickly. The ambiance was nice as well making this a great venue to bring a date or hang out with friends. I ordered the Southern Deep Fried Chicken and felt the meal was a bit underwhelming. Although the fried chicken was well seasoned the sides missed the mark for what I expected for a southern dish. Absolutely not somewhere you ever want to go! While the market as a fine dining restaurant this is far from it and let me tell you why. Food you order is bought fresh and then frozen (seafood included) The dessert you order is from a box and simply put on a plate. And while I've made several reports the liquor you order when you expect high quality liquor is swapped out and branded high quality! The dousse is not even dousse! The owner treats staff terribly and half of the staff isn't payed properly. Servers tip out 50% of whatever tip you give them and the owner keeps part of the tip that's supposed to go to the bussers. If your looking to apply here I would think twice. I've been management many places and due to the sheer amount of illegal activities here I would stay clear. If you read a bad review from here expect it as truth! I hope they do better but I however do not recommend! read more

The Mac n cheese was amazing. But not for nothing they should've taken the fish off the bill when I complained. The fried branzino comes with some funky smelling red stuff. I think pickled peppers. I don't know what it is but it smells like hot throw up and athlete's foot. Nobody at our table could stomach the smell or finish their food. We literally all stopped eating and took our food to go. I told the waitress and all she did was come with a plate and scrape the funky stuff off. The place was nice but I'm still nauseous from that smell so I wouldn't recommend this place based on that experience. I should've just demanded a manager come take it away all in all. Average place at best. Food was very mediocre. Drinks were pretty good. Service was good even though there are plenty of staff standing around you (small place only 6-8 tables) like wall flowers until you signal them over. You should be watching the table and refill glasses or ask if everything is alright, instead of standing around like the secret service. Very uncomfortable setting as they try not to stare or watch you eat. I would not be returning again. Prices are also very high for what you get. Ambience is nice inside though, but again, it's a small place. Food ordered: Beef on stick (horribly overcooked steak) no seasoning for sauce Salmon (was overcooked but seasoned well) Lobster Mac Cheese - below average. Lobster didn't taste very fresh. So, I had high hopes for this place so I will give the positive feedback first. Staff..all were super friendly and nice. Especially the bartender..I didn't get her name. Drinks were on point. The midnight orchid drink was very delicious. The vibe and the decor..beautiful and insta worthy. DJ was doing his thing..great music and groove. Now, the food...I had the scallops app it was extremely salty. Like dump all the salt in my plate salty. But other apps I tried from the group like the coconut shrimp and empanadas were good. My main meal was the ox tails, I get them at every restaurant that has them on the menu. When I tell you I could barely eat it because again..the salt was the main ingredient I was extremely disappointed. 3 of us in our group got them and none of us barely ate and did not take home leftovers. There were 2 dishes that did look good, the fried chicken and the fried branzino. Those plates were empty at the end of the meal. The one other recommendation I can make..offer the cornbread from the chicken dish as a permanent side dish..I would go back just for that! read more

Great aesthetic Horrible Experience. First walking up to the restaurant it is very beautiful from the outside and when you first walk in, it's a perfect photo op wall. Once you're in the dining room itself, it is such beautiful space and very aesthetic decor. I was also in love with the music they were playing. From those elements alone I wanted to love this place so bad! Everything else just went downhill more and more as the evening progressed. Now I know I have difficult allergies, but if you say you are a high end restaurant, I do expect you are able to accommodate my allergies which are gluten and nuts. Our waitress was just a disaster from the start when it came to ordering our drinks. We ordered a bottle of wine and got the completely wrong type of wine altogether. I use to be a waitress and I expect you to know your reds from whites. My husband fried calamari appetizer was a beautiful plate but he said it was tough and chewy. When it came time to ordering the food, I was very specific about allergies that I had and tried to order very simple dish and I stated it numerous times. The dish came out normal with none of the accommodations I had asked for which was literally just a piece of chicken on a plate with a side salad. My kids meals also came out wrong so that was an extra 15 minutes waiting for food. When we refused the first round of food that they gave us, the servers looked at us like we were crazy and our waitress had an attitude about it, but you brought us out all wrong dishes. What did you expect was going to happen? From that alone the bill should have been comped especially since everything had to be remade and took over 15 minutes. But the service on top of it was atrocious and she just didn't seem to care at all and when the bill came it all made sense. She automatically was getting $120 so why did she have to work for extra? I would like to also point out the restaurant was not busy or packed or anything of the sorts to condone this terrible experience. You got me to come to your place from your social media, but I will never come back as a regular customer. I'm sorry I have to give them a 1. Way over price for fried chicken that was nothing but a leg and a boneless thigh. $37 is way too much for a fried chicken meal. Came with cornbread which was a brick and not hot. Collard greens not edible. Mac and Cheese yuck! Food was not good at all. Food took way too long to come out! Hubby got the jerked chicken again way over price for a few pieces of really thin slices of breast meat. $29 is way too much for something that is not better than a store front. Oh and $12.50!!! for sparkling water and that was served at room temperature. What a freaking rip-off. Had to ask for ice. Even though they took my meal off the bill it was still a disappointment at $95. I was celebrating my husband's birthday. Should have stuck with what i know. Customer service was good. Ok, where do I even begin, smh. To start, I had reservations for 3 and went for brunch on 7/6/24. The place/decor was very nice, the parking was good because we parked across the street at the dollar tree and the music was nice. So when I got there, I waited about 5 min and was seated. My full party wasn't there, but they were otw. So when I wasn't immediately greeted by a server, someone did come over and asked if I wanted water. I wasn't concerned about ordering food because my party hadn't arrived yet and he wasn't the server anyway. Once my party arrived, the first thing they said is, why is the music so loud? I really hadn't noticed because it kept me preoccupied while I waited for them, but once they got there, I noticed we needed a bullhorn to hold a damn conversation. It was extremely loud as if we were in a club. That was strike one. So we parused the menu, had questions, and was ready to order that took us all about 5 minutes. Now, where's the server? I advised my party that while I sat there waiting for them to arrive, no one came over, so I had no idea who the server was. We tried to hold a convo while we waited, which was impossible due to the volume of the music, but now we're like, again, where is the server? We asked the people walking around clearing tables, but they really didn't know either. Needless to say, we waited about 45 min for our server to finally come over and take orders, UNACCEPTABLE. Although she was extremely nice, we were annoyed at this point. So she puts the food orders in, including our mimosas. We're now thinking ok finally the ball is starting to roll, well surprise surprise, we waited an additional 30 min for the food and mimosas and our server NEVER checked in us during this time. We finally got our food, and it wasn't hot, nor did everyone get their order. By this time, we started eating while we waited for the additional orders. Still NOTHING. Ok, NOW, I need a manager. I asked for a manager, and the owner came over. So I told her about the service being piss poor, food taking forever to come out and we were STILL waiting on some orders. She was extremely apologetic and accommodating. However, the damage was done, and I'm pissed. So she did explain to us that she was short staffed due to sending 2 servers home, but she wasn't making excuses. Mind you, no one, not even the server, mentioned this, nor did she say she was the ONLY server in the area, wtf. So that kind of explains why the service was so horrible. Had someone told us this as soon as I arrived, maybe we wouldn't have been so upset atp, but there was no communication. So, to sum it up, the service SUCKED, the food wasn't HOT, and it took forever to come out. For the brunch to be bottomless, we only got 1 and a half rounds of food. We didn't even wanna order anything else because it was just frustrating trying to get service and food. The owner did rectify it by comping a meal, and she was extremely apologetic. Oh, mind you, you only get a 90 min table limit for the bottomless brunch, and it took us about 90 min to get our first round of food. So we stayed at the establishment till we were the last ones to leave and the owner even said we could stay till they closed if we liked. Umm, whether she said it or not I wasn't leaving till I was ready, but it was nice to know I didn't have to go that route of making a scene had someone told us our 90 min was up. All I all, I wouldn't say I'll never return, but I won't go out my way return. I was extremely disappointed, to say the least. I try to support black owned establishments with "black jobs," but then we get piss poor service, and it's just not acceptable. I not only expect good, HOT food, but I expect exemplary service, and unfortunately, this establishment did not provide that. read more

this is going to be a mixed review. So I will start with the good. This was my second time house 157. my first was a group celebration I was very impressed! everything was delicious! I enjoyed the variety and everything was cooked to perfection. at the time I had the cevicia & the grill octopus which could have been a miss. So today I had my husband take me for my birthday. Again the flavors excelent, I had the grilled scallop appetizer on a bed of arugula perfect, my husband had the calamari. he said it was the best he had in a long time. Our entry salmon, and I had the surf&turf the lobster could have melted in your mouth it was so delicately prepared. Now let review what was a deal breaker. the filet mignon. had silver skin/ connective tissue still attached. This should have been trimmed off prior to cooking. this made the experience of cutting into the meat that was cooked to a perfect med rare that should have cut like butter. but made it a chore to cut. I did not make mention during dinner because it my birthday weekend and don't want to give off any new. energy. But that being said you guy realy need to work on not serving a quality piece of meat that was not properly prepared for service. I had a really nice time grabbing dinner here on a Friday night. It's a really cute spot with great music and vibes. It's definitely a lively restaurant but not where it's too much. The music is at a good volume where you can still have a good convo. My food was delicious! You have to try the snapper and the black rice was just amazing. The price for food and drinks are closer to fine dining rates, but I'll definitely will come back and would like to try it out for brunch. read more

Off rip the outside is beautiful, my sister and i went there for Sunday brunch the live music was amazing...everything came to $75 each (including unlimited mimosas) person prefixed menu (appetizer and entrees) ... now the mimosas 10/10, the appetizer 10/10 (chicken empanadas and chicken wings), now the entrees ehhh that's where they lost me, i ordered the Rasta pasta with chicken and it didn't even look appealing, i ate a little bit but had to return it bc it was so oily , the shrimp quesadilla was what my sister had and she sent back her meal because it was more cheese than shrimp smh... it was our first time trying this place and i was disappointed with the entrees esp for the amount of money im spending , but thank you to the manager who helped us out by swapping out our meals to French toast which wasn't the best either , it was supposed to come with Dulce De Leche sauce and powered sugar lol i got none of that lmao just let the pics speak for itself but the service , music , ambience i give it a 10 but the food gets a 3. Visited for the first time on Thursday for my birthday with a 6:15pm reservation. Seated on time. Service was great, food was delicious (ordered the Cajun Salmon, partner ordered the seafood paella) and he too was pleasantly satisfied with the taste and portion. We loved the ambiance and the music in the background. Things the restaurant could work on: when I reserved, I mentioned through OpenTable that it was my birthday on the reservation, however nothing special happened for me, but I guess I would need to tell them once I got to the restaurant because others got their birthday song and dessert. I asked for additional bread, but it never came although they said someone would take care of it. Also, when I ordered rum cake which didn't come with ice cream, I did ask for a scoop of ice cream with it and it never came. Those three things were not deal breakers though. I would certainly return and if the moment allow, would be more persistent on the food item requests. read more

My issue is with the food. Considering the price of the meals, I expected to get what I was paying for. After making reservations for Valentine's Day Dinner weeks in advance at this new establishment, upon arrival I was greeted by the owner who then proceeded to ask me if I had reservations. I informed her that I had reservations for 7:45pm. The owner then stated that I never confirmed the reservation. I told her if that was the case then why wasn't I contacted or why didn't I get an alert from open table. Owner then stated to give her a few minutes to set the table. We waited almost 20min before we were seated down. Waited another 20min just for our waiter to attend to us. We placed our drink orders which took 45min before we even received our drinks. Throughout the night we were left unattended for long periods of time and several requests were never met. At one point the owner came upstairs and addressed us by saying that we were too loud and her guest downstairs were all trying to have a romantic dinner. At the end of the night we were told that there weren't any more to go lids to match the containers that was provided to us by our waiter. We were also told bc of low containers they could only provide us with aluminum foil to wrap up our dessert. I can honestly say this was not the night that we were expecting. We did speak with the owner and expressed how we felt and that this first time experience was not great. She apologized for the in-convince but we were just not pleased with the service. read more
