Unfortunate that this is the day I decided it was about time I left a review for House Of Bread. House of Bread is a lovely space, airy light dining room, and lots of baked goods, and artisanal-looking jarred goods. It feels very open. They have a menu on the wall, and a chalkboard with the types of bread available that day. Husband orders cheesy broccoli soup, and she tells him "it's not really cheesy broccoli soup, it's got lots of veggies in it too" ok, he says, but still orders a bowl. I choose Tuna Salad, and I select 14 grain as my bread choice - "sorry, we're out of that", so I then choose 9 grain - "sorry, we're out of that", and so I ask for marbled rye - "sorry, we're out of that too" I'm really quite surprised, as it's 12.30 like prime lunch time, and they're out of 3 breads already? Maybe cross them off your chalkboard, so you don't have to keep disappointing people. So i choose focaccia with my fingers crossed, and all was well. The order was complete at 12.36. We sit. We wait. Twiddling our fingers. By 20 minutes I'm becoming impatient, because I'm hangry, and the dining room is not that full - maybe 5 tables. As there are 4 staff working behind the counter (could be more round the back in the bakery) I think service could be faster, to dish up a bowl of premade soup, and assemble a cold tuna salad sandwich. Anyway i get my eye on the young man making sandwiches. He's not wearing gloves, is running his fingers through his hair, and touching his face. I see a sandwich that was on the top of the shelf, and it either fell, or he threw it, onto presumably a bench below, and then reach up angrily for a new bag of bread, I don't know - maybe he made it wrong, and was starting over. By 1.02, (26 minutes later) husband could take it no more and went to get a refund. This is not the review I expected to be leaving today, as I've never had service like this here before. I've never gone here before and had to choose my bread 4 times, due to them running out. I've never had to wait so long for lunch using pre-made ingredients. I don't know what was going on, but it's nothing like all the other times we've been here, and I hope it's a one off. If I go back and see the same staff, I'll just walk straight out again and avoid another experience like this one. read more

Counter girl walked away as I was about to order to go flirt with the kid in the back, astounding. Had to clean my own table with napkins and water. The table next to me did the same thing as well. My friend wanted to stop by on her way from work & I remembered how impressed I was back in the Fall. I don't know what happened between then and now but I won't be going back. We stopped in just after 5pm, Thursday April 2nd. I saw a few things I was interested in buying for the family, but I had the feeling someone was staring at us. I looked up and saw the younger girl with multi-colored hair glaring at us while the older girl with colored hair was stacking chairs on tables. Google said they closed at 6pm, so I'm assuming she was mad we were interrupting their pre-close. After seeing the flattest "brownies", flatter than a cookie, the soggy zucchini bread with no date on the wrapper, the glare from the young girl behind the register and not one single "Hi" from the 3 employees working, ( the 3rd one was eating a sandwich behind the counter), I decided not to buy a single thing & not to ever come back. My friend bought 4 items & the glaring girl only spoke when she said the total, not even a "Would you like a bag?", "Thank You", "Enjoy your bread" or "Have a good night." Too bad. I got a loaf of sourdough and one chocolate and one almond croissant for $15. The croissants were dense and chewy. More like a dinner roll. The almond croissant wasn't like other almond croissants with marzipan-like filling; it had chopped up nuts and cinnamon sugar... seemed like a pecan roll more than an almond croissant. The sourdough was really disappointing :( sourdough in Alaska is amazing and this was just like a regular loaf of bread... mild sourdough flavor and soft like a dense loaf of white bread. I always want to love this place but I just don't. My husband feels that my lower 48 food expectations get in the way but it shouldn't be hard for a bakery/soup/sandwich place to make an incredibly tasty sandwich. For starters the sandwich choices are very limited. It's mainly cold sandwiches with bland toppings. It would be beneficial for them to have more sauce options (like savory sauces, maybe a chipotle sauce). Basically it's mayo and mustard from what I see and they don't add much to the sandwich. I'm sorry y'all I'm picky about sandwiches. The sourdough bread is just ok. I'd love to see more hot sandwich options like paninis with maybe an herb mayo or something to that effect. Service was decent. The price point is not bad with the amount of sandwich you get at $12 bucks for a whole sandwich. Goodness someone please season these sandwiches and add some sauce! This place is so well organized and so "on-brand" that at first I thought it was a chain! I had to go to their website to confirm that they were a local business. The title don't lie. Bread is the main thing they do here. However, they have a selection of sandos using said bread. I got a sunrise sandwich and added roast beef. I also got a large coffee. It came out to around $16. Sooooo, my daughter wanted Challah bread for her birthday and my mom door dashed it for the 3rd year in a row. This bread was not on the darkest I've ever seen their Challah but it made an audible thud on my table. To the touch with reason amount of pressure I could not squeeze this loaf. First visit today. Got a 1/2 roast beef on sourdough and chicken noodle soup. The soup is super bland, had to add a ton of salt to get flavor. But it's not house of soup. It's house of bread. They are masters in that. The absolute softest freshest sourdough I've ever had. They have samples of different stuff too. Fresh baked bread wafts through the deli complete with hard wood floors and a warm fire place. I ordered and devoured the chicken Tuscan on grandmas white with added mayo and salt and pepper that I added on later. Now pay attention as this is important: as far as chicken goes, most places slice it into chunks which is like trying to stuff stir fry into your sandwich. House of bread slices a long flat horizontal cut of the chicken breast which is soft, not messy and absolutely a delicious way to enjoy your chicken in a sandwich.
