I'm glad that they had beer flights because I was unable to decide what kind I wanted. With some assistance from the bartender I chose 4 beers and every single one of them was wonderful. I would absolutely go back if I'm ever in Anchorage again. It does get a little bit loud and it gets very crowded so be prepared to either wait, or sit at the bar. It is open seating, you check in at the host stand and they'll give you a menu and you just find a place to sit. All in all it was a wonderful time and the food was great. Stopped in for lunch between our cruise drop off and flight departure. The place was hopping on a Monday afternoon (Memorial Day). It was "seat yourself," and we found a two top. The servers seemed a little new, but the service was good and friendly. They carry Frontier brand sodas which we found to be excellent for their flavor. We got root beer and ripe raspberry soda. I ordered the Chili AK Salmon Bowl which our server confirmed is wild salmon. My wife ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries. Both meals were really good. I especially liked the sauce on the salmon bowl so much so that I asked for a little more only to be charged for the extra sauce. I also noticed they include a service charge on the bill (note that this was not gratuity). They told us it was to help them get seasonal labor and to cover overhead. Maybe this is an Alaska thing, but with menu prices as high as these, why would you need to add a service charge? Pricing and nickel & diming aside, I would recommend this place. read more

The place is always busy and the food is always good. HOWEVER you really need to check your itemized receipt before paying. I calculated our meal cost before paying and it was around $5 higher on the bill presented than what it was listed on the menu. I also was paying cash so it shouldn't have been any kind of extra card fee. I have reached out to the company, but no response yet. Best restaurant we ate at on our Alaska trip per my husband, and I concur! A little bit of a wait for the second floor seating, but we chose the first come first serve option for the first floor seating. We ordered the crab grilled cheese, yak burger and a classic flight of beer. All of them were delicious. The fries that came with both entrees were tasty and so was the chowder that came with the grilled cheese. I will say their Wedge salad was pretty darn tasty. Their sandwiches come with fries but you don't get a bunch of fries. One of our guys has the salad and to add a skewer of steak the cost was $19 which I thought was rather steep. Overall the food was really good, I would definitely come back. Yak burger anyone??? I was in beautiful Anchorage and wanted to grab some lunch. 49th state brewing was perfect because it wasn't far from my hotel and because it was so cold outside, I didn't want my walk to exceed 15 minutes. I was really hungry so I got there right when they opened at 11 a.m. I was able to be seated immediately and opted to sit upstairs where the tables were lower as compared to downstairs where the tables were high tops. Off the bat the food is phenomenal. For starters I got their popular handmade Bavarian pretzel. It was perfectly seasoned with butter and salt and the pretzel itself was soft and fluffy. It came with a side of cheese which was just as tasty. I was a little nervous it would taste like the melted cheese you eat at an amusement park- but this cheese had fantastic quality. One really neat thing about this brewery is they make their own fountain drinks! I tried the raspberry one and as you can see they aren't shy about the portions! The drink was really good. It had a great flavor to it, and a nice balance. The raspberry wasn't overpowering which I'm grateful for. For my entree I had the Yak burger that came with a side of tater tots. My waiter recommended I get it cooked at medium to keep it juicy. Typically I'm a medium well to well done type of girl, but I decided to trust his judgement and he was right! The burger was huge, messy, and delicious. The medium was definitely a good call. It was juicy but not so red where it would be off putting! Overall, I had a really incredible dining experience at 49th state brewing. And the prices were unbelievably reasonable. My meal came out to about $52 (not including my tip). I would love to come back when it's a bit warmer and sit outside- the views from the restaurant are phenomenal. Also, shout out to my waiter! My coworker and I dropped in for a late lunch at 49th State Brewing, and we were honestly impressed from the moment we walked in. It's a nice, welcoming establishment with plenty of space, and parking is available across the street, which made things easy. Our waiter was extremely kind and friendly. He walked us through the specials, offered recommendations, and brought over a drink menu. We each ordered a drink, I went with a local stout that reminded me of Guinness, just much tastier and smoother. Definitely something I'd come back for. We mentioned that we were in the mood for halibut, and our waiter immediately recommended the panko-crusted halibut, saying it was his personal favorite. He was right. The dish was outstanding--tender, perfectly cooked halibut with a crisp panko crust, served with a mash red-potato and drizzled around the plate was a light white lemon cream sauce. Everything complemented each other perfectly. One of the best halibut plates I've had in Anchorage. We wrapped up our late lunch with dessert: a bread pudding and a blackberry crème brûlée. The bread pudding was warm, perfectly cooked, and served with a rich cream sauce that pulled it all together. The crème brûlée was delicate with a subtle blackberry hint that enhanced the flavor without overpowering it. Overall, fantastic service, excellent food, and a great atmosphere. I've been coming to 49th State for lunch, dinner, drinks, and events for quite a while and have usually enjoyed the atmosphere, especially the rooftop. Unfortunately, the last two times we visited, the service experience was really disappointing. We waited around 25 minutes on the very top rooftop without being helped or checked on, and eventually ended up leaving both nights. My boyfriend went up after 30 minutes and requested to be attended to. I understand places get busy, but being completely unattended for that long was frustrating. I still think the location and vibe are great, which is why this was so disappointing. Hoping service improves because this used to be one of our go-to spots. We did go to the beer garden and got a pretzel and beer before we left but hope to go back and experience the rooftop. read more

I was in Anchorage for business trip and found this unhidden gem on yelp. I say that because this is the second time coming here and it's always packed. So that's good right? Las time I had fish n chips which if your in Alaska it should be pretty good fish and it was. But this time around I went with the waiters recommendation and went with the Buffalo Burger with tater tots. I've had buffalo burger before but this nine was much tastier and had and was so messy like a good big burger should. It was good and with jalapeños and cheese it was on point. Would not recommend. I get the long wait when there are cruise ships in town however, once I got my text it was another 10 mins until they sat us. They took my party and another party together up the stairs which was strange bc no communication if we were all sitting together or what. Our waiter and trainer came over the introduce themselves. Then when we were ready to order it was just the trainee. He didn't know how to enter a certain beverage and said he would be back bc we were even ready to order food. He left and didn't come back so we had to waive down the trainer who took our order. We only ordered drinks and nachos. The nachos took forever and when they finally came a women just brought the nachos down set them down and turned around no customer service asking if everything looks good or can they get you anything else or even just a here ya go would have been good. The nachos were cold like they were re sitting out forever. We had to flag the trainee down and they put in another order. What seemed to be like a manager brought the other nachos out. Still not as heated as I would have expected for nachos but I was hangry by this point. When it was time to pay the bill the trainer made it seem like the manager made it right with us but yet still charged us for everything. So I have some family that live up in Anchorage, and the whole week we were visiting them they kept talking about 49th stat brewery. So here's the deal, I'm not much of a beer guy, and the ones I've tried, I prefer fruitier drinks. They tried to tell me how the food was better than the drinks, but having been to plenty of breweries, I didn't really believe them... I was Wrong. 49th State Brewery ended up becoming one of our favorite restaurants ever. You walk in and it feels very Alaska, there's horns on the walls, it gives log cabin vibes, but not in an obnoxious way, it's like a modern cabin if that makes sense. Everyone we interacted with was very kind and helpful. They have a very large selection of beers, ciders, and cocktails. You can get a flight of any beer they have that isn't bottled or canned only so that opens you up to about 80% of the beers they have. I got a flight with the Arnold Palmer, Nitro McCarthy, Tiger's Blood, and Tropic Tundra. All were fantastic. I was honestly shocked at how similar Arnold Palmer and Tiger's blood were to their counterparts. Then the food was just out of this world. I wanted crab, and was convinced to get the crab grilled cheese. This thing was FULL of crab. It came with a cup of chowder to dip it into as well. It was incredibly good. We went again later that week and I got a Yak burger, which was also phenomenal! It tasted like a beef, but who else can say they ate a Yak Burger in Alaska? Now if there was a way to petition these guys to branch out of the 49th state to the lower 48, that'd be amazing, but then again, it'd be one less reason to make a trip back! read more

I *want* to love 49th State Brewery so much. The space is great, the vibe is fun, and honestly--the food is really good. That's what makes this so frustrating. Every time I come here, the service is a complete trainwreck. A few months ago, I had one of the strangest service interactions I've ever experienced. Our server would not let me set my water glass anywhere except directly on the coaster. I'm not exaggerating, she watched me set it down at a nearby table, came over, picked it up, moved it onto the coaster, looked at me, and said it *had* to go on the coaster. This happened more than once. It got to the point where it felt uncomfortable and bizarre, like she literally would not let it go. Then on Super Bowl Sunday, I came in about 2.5 hours after opening, before the rush, but specifically for the half-price apps promo that was being advertised everywhere. The bartender had no idea what I was talking about. Instead of taking two minutes to ask a manager, he kept saying, "we will figure it out" to me and then to two other groups at the bar who asked the same thing. Eventually he came back and said he "heard" it didn't start until 2pm. I told him the website and Facebook event clearly said 11am until end of game, and again... "we will figure it out." To be fair, I *did* get the discount in the end, but it shouldn't be that hard. Promotions should be communicated to staff, and basic questions shouldn't feel like such a struggle every single visit. This place has so much potential, and the food really is good, but the service consistently feels undertrained, unprepared, and chaotic. I keep giving it another chance because I want it to be great, but at some point, the service has to catch up to the food. read more

We have ventured up to Alaska for the past to July 4 celebrations, and each time we have found our self at 49th State brewing. We understand why there's always a wait here, and after our second experience, we will continue to come join the line for dinner here! This place is an absolute institution! They've got great beer, the indoor and outdoor seating areas are fantastic. When the weather is nice, sitting out on the porch is awesome. When it's not, inside is bustling, but surprisingly intimate with the large booths that are available. We've sampled a good portion of the menu, including the fish and chips, a couple of burgers (including the Yak burger!) and even explored the healthier side of the menu with a grilled chicken dish and the tuna poke bowl! Literally, everything we've tried. Here is delicious. The burger was particularly memorable. Juicy, well seasoned, and with some delightful cheese and fixings! It was almost too big for one hand! On the way out, there's a gift shop where you can buy hats, shirts, and some of these special offering beers that they have. I brought back a couple of limited releases from last year, including a couple unreal stouts. They were good enough that I checked a bag on the way home! So I went to this spot during my Alaska trip and absolutely loved it! It has this cozy bar vibe with a fireplace inside and a fire pit outside, what else do you need! So the crowd was super chill. Outside they had some seating area around the bon fire kind of setting and the parking lot had this cool vintage truck and Alaskan street signs. So onto the food, I started with a yakadilla...yep, a quesadilla with yak meat! First time trying yak and honestly, not bad at all. It was dry, salty and kind of tasted like jerky but it was okay. I just wanted to try it once. Then came the onion ring stacks. These were huge and hands down my favorite. I never had such stacks before! So crispy and so good! Also, tried the smoked baby ribs with BBQ & slaw! They were fine, no complaints. Next I tried the halibut and chips and these were delicious. The fish was fresh and the batter was just the right amount of crispy and flavor. Last and also the least was The vegan flatbread with black chickpeas and lettuce... yeah that combo didn't hit. And now the beer!!! I'm not even a beer person, but I tried two of their in house drafts and OMG they tasted like cocktails in the best way! I have family in town so I decided to give 49th another try. Since we're still pre-Memorial Day, the crowds weren't insane. The rest of what I had to say, sadly, still stands. The beer here continues to get better and...the food continues to get worse as the service get progressively more spotty. My Mom and I came in for Mother's Day and the beers were stellar. Their SmÖk is one of the best smoked beers you can get anywhere. Their West Coast Pilsner was as good as my own! The service? We were done with our beers and were kind of waiting for someone to look at us again...it's like we became invisible. Had to flag someone down to get the tab. We came here for dinner last night. The halibut tacos were not good. The halibut was fishy and throat-scrapingly, dry. It came with chips and pico but...the pico cup was so pathetic that there was maybe enough in it for 3-4 chips. My mom got a salad instead of fries, but fries came out. My brother didn't get sauce for his wings. These mistakes are understandable, but the server never followed up with us after the food was dropped off. So he didn't find out till 30 minutes later that my Mom didn't want fries and my bro needed some sauce to dampen up the bone-dry wings. The best way to experience 49th State is to drink their beer. After stopping at their Denali location, we came here for dinner once we got back for Anchorage. Pretty similar menu but much more crowded and difficult to get a table. We ended up getting one of their high tops around the fire pit that was open seating. Great for a party of 2. Really enjoyed their calamari. The chowder was delicious, too. They brew their own beer so you have a good selection of unique brews. We decided to vary from the normal seafood choices. We went with tak burger and Bison or buffalo meatloaf. Both were very good. We had o e small glitch in our meal, but the server and manager fixed the problem quickly. If you order an appetizer and meal, you may not have enough room for dessert. We didn't, we left full.
