We always order jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), beef with sweet and sour sauce, and mapo tofu (spicy tofu with small bits of meat). Other times we order jjang pong (spicy seafood noodle soup), Mushroom Broccoli and Snow Peas, or the shrimp sweet and sour. I came here for a cheat meal of greasy Chinese food and I regretted instantly. Because it wasn't worth giving my healthy eating a break. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli lunch special. The soup was less than lukewarm, so chunky and starchy, not hot. The sauces on the side felt like they were sitting there for months, without changing it around for cleanliness. My shrimp tasted so old and I just didn't feel the value of $20+ for one lunch special. The server was really nice though so I feel bad writing this unstellar review but I haven't had this bad quality food in forever! I think Panda Express would have satisfied me more! read more

I've been here many times and been coming for years! Recently went with a group the other day and it was honestly nostalgic coming back to this restaurant. Service is fast, they cater for you instantly as you walk in. We tried this place based on the reviews. The place was located next to a Filipino restaurant and a Parisian bakery that we often visited. The food was very good. We were not disappointed. Everything was done really well. Portions were large. We got the dinner that came with appetizers, soup and entree each. Overall we were quite happy. Food quality was better than any cheap Chinese takeout place. So I thought it was a fair price for what you get. But some might find it a bit pricey. The things you should order include the Peking chicken, jja jang myun (black bean noodles), or jjam ppong (spicy seafood noodles). Prices: things have gotten pricier all around, so a bowl of jja jang myun will run you about $14. Parking: parking up top and below. People: fun for all. I believe they have side rooms for private events. Perks: if you want to park in a shaded location the plaza this restaurant is in offers subterranean garage parking. The first time I went to House of Joy was last Monday and I fell in love. I ordered the chicken chow mein. That was excellent. It had lots of chunky chicken. Most importantly it had tons of vegetables. It wasn't just noodles like most places my colleague got the house chow mein, which was even better because it came with lots of chicken, shrimp and beef. Chinese is my definite go to. I was so in love with that one experience that I took my husband this past weekend unfortunately they must've had another cook. My chow mein had hardly no chicken. I have maybe four shrimp. We ordered barbecue pork fried rice, which was steamed rice with sliced pork on top flavorless You definitely have to add soy sauce and I try and stay away from that but this time I needed it the eggrolls were room temperature and we spent almost $65 for two entrées. The service was just OK. This time the last time we went it was amazing. The gentleman was super kind. I love this location! Interior isn't all that, but I think that's part of the draw. You can feel the history behind this location. I ordered the uni jja jang and jjam bbong. Both tasted great. I do think they go a little extra with MSG because I had the hardest time trying to stay awake after that meal. For what its worth, they do specify on the menu if you want to exclude MSG haha. Wow. I am SO excited to have discovered this restaurant. For 8 years I've been searching for Chinese takeout that reminds me of east coast flavors I'm used to. This was an excellent order and I highly recommend to anyone looking for quality, tasty Chinese take out. I saw the reviews for the peking chicken immediately saved it on my must try list. Many reviewers compared it to San Tung in San Fransisco and I knew I had to try it. The PEKING CHICKEN is so tasty. My first bite didn't have much sauce but after I mixed all the wings, I got full on flavor. It's a little sweet, a little spicy and packs a perfect punch. I ordered through postmates so it seemed a little expensive. It is so worth it! The flavor is great but so is the amount they give you! It can feed an army. The korean style chinese food here is still great, but the Chinese cold noodles is terrible at this restaurant. I came by recently, and decided to try it out, and it was a massive mistake. The noodles come with mustard and peanut sauce on the side, in which you put a little bit inside the bowl, and it was nothing like I ever had. Don't order the Chinese cold noodles here. The chow mein dish tasted better the second day (leftovers) than the first. Not sure why, but on the first day I guess the flavors hadn't really mixed in well? The food is always fast, fresh, and delicious. The jjajangmyeon black bean sauce is thick, savory, and plentiful. The jjampong soup is just the right amount of spicy, and the seafood flavor isn't overwhelming! Their noodles always taste fresh and are perfectly chewy. They also have great spicy fried chicken and fried pork. The chicken falls right off the bones, and the pork has a subtly sweet sauce that complements it really well. House of Joy has been a resident of Glendale for many, many years. Back in its heyday, my family and relatives used to reserve the large private room for celebrations or family gatherings. While House of Joy no longer has that glamour or notoriety, they still make some damn good Peking Chicken. Crunchy, juicy, and saucy are all words that describe their chicken. In my opinion, their chicken is right on par with San Tung, the extremely popular Chinese restaurant in Nor Cal. Is the plaza that they are located in dying? Yeah. Is the interior of the restaurant old and outdated? Sure. Is the the service less than ideal? Absolutely. So why the 5-star review? That damn Peking Chicken has me coming back over and over again. I introduced my girlfriend to this chicken a few weeks ago and now I fear that she'll leave me for it. But in all seriousness, I would love to see them move out of this dying plaza and to somewhere on Brand or Central. Located right on Pacific and Arden, with a good-sized parking lot with upper and lower floors, as well as street parking, mostly on Arden. You walk in, look up and hold up the number in your party, and just as quickly get ushered in, and immediately seated. Service is polite and very efficient.
