The space is cozy, dim, and stylish perfect for a slow, flavorful night of yakitori, small plates, and sake. The sushi is clean and high quality, the skewers come out smoky with that perfect char, and the wagyu dishes are the kind that make you pause mid conversation. Their sauces and marinades lean bold, and the plating always feels intentional without being pretentious. Service is warm, pacing is smooth, and the whole experience feels like a neighborhood gem that knows exactly what it's doing. A refined but relaxed izakaya with standout flavors, great energy, and a menu worth exploring bite by bite.

Even if don't like seabass, you must try this one! it's buttery, perfectly charred and melts in your mouth. The prime beef is equally impressive: tender, packed with rich umami flavor, and cooked to perfection. For a larger dish, you can't go wrong with either the sea bass or blue crab hot pot. It's so rich and comforting, the fish is always perfectly cooked, and it's more than enough food for two people. Be sure to order a side of seaweed and make your own hand rolls at the table. The kabocha salad is also unexpectedly delicious and pairs well with the other indulgent items in this order. They recently moved next door and they may be overbooking themselves so expect to wait quite a while- even if you have reservations.

The staff were attentive, even though we only ordered one dish. The sushi chef prepared our spicy tuna roll quickly, and it tasted pretty good. If you've been following me here on Yelp, (wink wink) what are you doing standing there not sending…read moreme a friend request by now? You already know how much I love reviewing new places or adding to reviews of spots I may have forgotten I've been to. Just like that one-time date whose name, face, and entire existence you mentally deleted. Oops. I love these unassuming places that end up being total gems. This restaurant is tucked behind a gazillion other amazing spots on Hillhurst Ave. in Los Angeles. The street is quaint, charming, and gives off "meet-cute in a rom-com" energy vibe. Let's dive in: PARKING Ladies, be prepared to walk, unless you get lucky and snag a spot right in front. I thought there was private parking, and I think there is... somewhere. But I didn't see it, and street parking on Hillhurst is like trying to find a guy who doesn't say "I'm not ready for a relationship" after three amazing dates. Red flag: Parking is elusive and mysterious. Like a man with no social media presence. Green flag: We found a spot, so the universe was clearly rooting for us. SERVICE The first thing I noticed? Service was sloooow. There was only one chef and one server, and the place was packed, on a Sunday afternoon, no less. I felt sorry for the server who had to juggle all his customers by himself. The sushi chef was friendly and greeted us when we walked in. I liked that. Red flag: Understaffed and overwhelmed. Like a guy who's emotionally unavailable but still insists on dating. Green flag: The staff was doing their best, and I respect the hustle. But whoever owns this place needs to hire reinforcements ASAP. Sushi deserves better. FOOD We ordered the Microtech sashimi with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, crab meat, and soy paper. It was unbelievably delicious, I fell in love instantly. If I wasn't trying to lose weight, I'd have ordered three more plates just for me. We also got another sashimi plate, and it was solid. Green flag: Flavor that makes you forget your calorie count and your ex. Red flag: None here...this dish was a total catch. AMBIENCE Very casual vibes. Lots of kids, big tables, and even a dog in the back room. It's giving "family-friendly" with a side of chaos. Now, one of my little pet peeves: flies. I don't like places that ignore the presence of annoying flies. If I were the manager, I'd be checking those windows and setting boundaries. Why? Because flies and raw fish are a toxic combo. Red flag: Flies buzzing around sushi? That's a hard no. Like showing up to a date and realizing they brought their emotional baggage and their actual ex. Green flag: The casual vibe is great for low-pressure hangs. Just maybe not your first date unless you're both chill and fly-tolerant. WOULD I TAKE A DATE HERE? Absolutely. I'd give it another chance. The food was yummy, and the laid-back atmosphere makes it perfect for a second or third date...when you're past the "impress me" phase and into the "let's just vibe" stage.

This Japanese Mexican fusion restaurant on Sunset is simultaneously cozy, sexy, and sophisticated. The seating is intimate and as such, perfect for date night or catching up with a friend or two. In addition to indoor sushi bar seating, there is also a bit of outdoor seating, which makes for a good people watching experience. On to the food. What we ordered for the table: 1. Hamachi choco nigiri - their signature nigiri which consists of seared yellowtail topped with Oaxacan chocolate and salt. A very memorable and unique offering, and I recommend everybody to try this at least once while at Santo. 2. Uni nigiri - fantastic uni which was both buttery and sweet. 3. ikura nigiri - I'm just a sucker for ikura and will order it at every opportunity. Fantastic ikura quality. 4. Unagi nigiri - I love my eel. 5. Soft shell crab - perfect. 6. Salmon nigiri - a classic. 7. Otoro bowl - love fresh fatty tuna. Delicious little bowl. 8. Spicy tuna roll - my +1 isn't as fond of nigiri and sashimi as I am, so we indulged in a few rolls as well. All of them were excellent. 9. Daruma roll 10. San shake roll 11. Matcha brûlée - not quite what we expected, as under the perfectly seared brulee, there was a rice pudding filling. This is a solidly executed desert in its own right, but perhaps not my favorite. 12. A Junmai sake for the table. We were fortunate enough to find metered street parking immediately outside, but there should be free residential parking a couple blocks' walk from the restaurant as well. Service was courteous and prompt.

This hand roll spot blew me away and I can't wait to return…read more Although KazuNori has been my go-to handroll spot for years and years, only one or two other places ever came close. Now Sogo took the top place for my favorite! Stopped by Friday for lunch and it was pretty calm so I was able to chat more with the friendly staff. I started off with some Naguryama "Crane Castle" sake in a carafe and it was delicious. One of the best sake I've ever had and this place has a fantastic array of sake available! For food I went with the baked crab crispy rice first and this was amazing. The only place I've found doing a "crab" crispy rice and it was spot on. The rice was so crispy without being oily or chewy. Then I went with the six roll set (subbing the spicy tuna with a toro scallion) and although each roll was absolutely wonderful, my top three would have to be the toro, albacore kari kari, and crab. Each roll has a great amount of warm rice that is so fluffy and flavored well without overpowering the fish. The fish isn't cold either so there isn't a drastic temperature change. My ONLY complaint is that one or two of the rolls had seaweed that instantly got soft and chewy so it was hard to bite through. I'm not sure if these pieces of seaweed were left open when they were about to be used? Did they get moisture? It didn't ruin my experience but I definitely noticed it. BUT I will say what I appreciated is the small strip of seaweed that is tucked on the bottom to keep all the filling in the handroll and not spill out as you bite! I added a salmon, unagi, and lobster hand rolls as well to really get a good sense of the menu. The salmon itself was good but I think the sauce they used (maybe a yuzu based?) was a bit too much and overpowered it. The lobster and unagie however were perfect! The unagi was warm, crispy, buttery while the lobster was rich and delicious. Absolutely great lunch and a place that I am happy to return to.

Sogo Roll Bar wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. I was very disappointed with their food…read more Parking also sucked very badly and we couldn't find parking for quite some time. We drove in circles around the residential area until we found a spot two blocks away. We were seated quite quickly and their servers were very kind. They gave us enough time to peruse their menu and decide what we wanted. My fiancé and I ordered their four roll hand set per person, an order of spicy tuna on crispy rice, and beers each. The beers were decent! I had their Flying IPA which was refreshing. When their crispy spicy tuna came, I thought it looked a bit dejected; the color of the spicy tuna wasn't vibrant and the taste of the fish seemed to be hidden by the Serrano peppers. I wanted to wait for their rolls to fully make my judgement of their food, but I guess that should have told me well enough what to expect. We first had their snapper hand roll and, oh boy, I could not handle the overwhelming amount of yuzu placed on it. I couldn't taste the fish and the seaweed was horrific to eat. I've eaten at other handroll places, and even if I stall for a minute or two, their seaweed exterior is still crispy. Not this place. I couldn't bite it. I thought I was at fault, so I decided for the next roll, that I'd eat it faster. We received our yellowtail roll next. I felt better because it was crispier, but the mayo was overwhelming. Next was a salmon roll, and I couldn't eat half of it due to the yuzu again. I gave up by the time I started eating the spicy tuna roll. My fiancé, being so sweet, managed to swallow it all, but he was also extremely disappointed. Our disappointment was very apparent, as the servers kept asking us how our food was. Being decent people, we told them it was fine, knowingly it wasn't. It's not their fault or the cooks; it's whatever recipe they're following. I should have checked other yelp reviews before eating here, because it was a waste of money. Heavily doused in Yuzu or mayonnaise, I don't understand why they're hiding the taste of fish. You're better off eating elsewhere like KazuNori, ROL Handroll bar in OC, or trying Onori Handroll Bar in Temecula. Don't come here if you know what good handrolls taste like.
