Sake Sushi Bar and Lounge is a cozy local sushi / Japanese shop in the heart of downtown Montrose. Sake is reliable, reasonably priced, and tasty. This review is for the restaurant aspect of Sake; I understand this location presents more as a trendy lounge during certain times during the week; this review does not address this aspect. Our family came during the busy Montrose Arts Festival, having the Bento Box ($23), complete with spicy tuna, teriyaki salmon, soup, salad, and tempura shrimp, the baked BSCR ($17) and Tokyo Sunset ($19) rolls, and a K5 Paitan Pork Ramen ($14.50). The sushi rich but quite heavy on the mayo and sauce, the bento box varied with the only standout being the salmon teriyaki with a nice crust, and the ramen was a big hit with the kids. We finished with a Raspberry Macaron Ice Cream from the front freezer, which was tangy but frozen quite solid; it would benefit from a few minutes to thaw or the freezer temperature lowered by a few degrees. The inside is fashionable and clean. The staff was friendly and prompt, with our food arriving after 15-20 minutes. Prices are reasonable. Overall, Sake is a reliable and respectable sushi place worth a visit if you're craving Japanese in the Montrose area. Not unique enough to warrant a detour, but a solid, reliable local spot that won't disappoint. Food: 4/5 Ambiance: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 Value: 4/5

Tried Sake Sushi in Montrose and really enjoyed it. The fusion rolls were fresh, flavorful, and nicely balanced without feeling too heavy. I also tried their new matcha with cold foam, and it was surprisingly good--smooth, refreshing, and a nice change from the usual drink options. The overall vibe was relaxed and welcoming too. Definitely a spot I'd come back to.

Came here on a Thursday night and there was only server working. Alice - the server - was amazing! She was so energetic and quick! She helped out all the tables all with a smile on her face! We got the spicy garlic edamame, which was delicious! Since I'm pregnant, we only ordered the baked rolls! The crunching tiger roll was amazing and so was the Tokyo sunset roll! The "this is how we roll" was okay. The eel wasn't too great. We ended the evening with mochi ice cream! The strawberry and mango were delicious!! Will definitely be back!

The menu offers pages of options, so there's something for everyone. I visited during a midweek lunch when it was fairly quiet, but I've been here many times before when the place was packed and lively. Orders come out quickly, and the sushi is always fresh and delicious. Free parking in the back is a big plus.

Shishito (some of the best ive ever had!! That sauce is so good)

We came here on a whim and this restaurant has since become such a comforting favorite. The food: SO GOOD. I really enjoy the marinated shishito here and the garlic edamame appetizers. Both are super umami and little flavor bombs. All the rolls we've had here are good too and the fish always tastes super fresh. I really like their new special roll called yellowtail delight and my boyfriend likes the honolulu ave roll. The service: OUTSTANDING! We have gotten Alice as our server every time we've come here and she is truly the best. She is so friendly and funny. Me and my bf LOVE her! She also has the best recommendations tailored to what kind of food and sake you like. We've enjoyed everything she's recommended so far and their sake options have all been super tasty! Definitely ask for a recco from her. The other staff that comes by to bring food/waters have also been super kind and attentive. :) Parking: super easy in the area. There's parking everywhere, but it's paid and metered. Definitely be attentive with paying your meter because we've seen parking enforcement going around giving people tickets on this street. Parking payment ends by 8 pm though

Food is average. We ordered Chicken bento box, poke bowl and two bowls of pork ramen. Service is on time and fine given there is only one waiter for a Sunday mid-afternoon slow low almost no one. Just a handful of tables are occupied. This needs TLC (tender loving carrots I mean care) at this point. Too bad and sad, it's pretty obvious The owner had let it deteriorate. Dilapidated dirty doors and floors. Restrooms were so dismal. No lights. TP was struggling. Dirty counters. The owner or manager should be aware people use the restrooms. If they can't take care of that, I wonder how the kitchen and food preparation are managed.

What the heck happened with this place??? The most tasteless sushi I've ever had. Our waiter is trying hard to be friendly but her condensing comments on 3 different occasions were beyond rude! Aside from the unprofessional service, I truly regretted dining here. We ordered the Atomic Albacore (no flavor) and Lobster Mania that's literally just topped with crab and way too much rice! Fried rice was cold and tasted old. No wonder the place was practically empty. Extremely disappointed!

Paitan K5. Paitan Pork Ramen - sooo good!
    Cristina A.

We've been here twice now. My hubby remembers the Paitan Ramen he had and wanted to eat this again. I had some of his ramen and I know why he ordered it again. The broth is has so much umami but not too rich. I would order this next time. The ambiance of the restaurant is very chill during lunch time. Love the selection of tunes from Taylor Swift to Mamma Mia. The service is on point.

I ate her when I was visiting Oktoberfest. I didn't wanna Broadsworth so I decided to veer off for some sushi. The place was able to seat five adults and four kids quickly which I appreciate. Overall the food wasn't bad but it also wasn't amazing. We got a fire fighter roll, a kids teriyaki chicken and rice and the sesame chicken. The rest of the table ordered shrimp tempura, a Bento box, the tempura udon soup, and three other kids chicken teriyaki. The fire fighter role wasn't very spicy and didn't have much flavor. The kids teriyaki chicken was probably my favorite thing. They forgot to add the tempura shrimp on top of the tempura udon soup. And the sesame chicken was not crispy. I would not go out of my way to go here again but if I was in the area I might stop by one more time to try some different sushi rolls.

I think I got the Joy Joy roll (spicy tuna inside baked salmon outside) I enjoyed the taste but it was kind of hard to eat due to the rice falling apart. This can happen with baked rolls but I've had better. The plating was gorgeous and the service was good! Ambiance inside is classy. Over the years I feel that the portions have gotten smaller here.

    Lauren F.

The rolls and poke bowls are sooo good!! It's my second time here and the rolls come out surprisingly fast both times. The rolls I picked were so packed with stuff that it was a yummy mouthful with every piece. I had Salmon Poke bowl and the dressing was delicious on the salad, especially refreshing on a hot day (I'd recommend it to anyone). If you like saucy rolls, the baked ones are yummy too.

We came for a friend's birthday party, and DEVOURED. Started off with the Matcha IPA beer (green deliciousness, a bit strong on the hop + matcha so beware), and ordered a few appetizers to start--edamame, karaage, seared albacore with onions, yellowtail jalapeño, ceviche (omg so good), shishito peppers--everything was amazing! As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the very friendly staff, who took us to a table. The restaurant is so clean and bright with gorgeous decor and the comfiest seating. The waiter was so knowledgeable and vividly described all of the options to me, saying which ones did not have any fish sauce or egg. I ended up ordering the Green Goddess sushi roll and the Agedashi Tofu. The tofu was brought out first and it was so delectable. It was coated in a lovely batter and fried and the sauce was just the right amount of tangy with the slightest sweetness. The Green Goddess sushi was equally amazing and beautifully presented on a leaf. It was true to its name and was very green with some lovely avocado, cucumber and asparagus. It was even topped with jalapeño to give it some added spice and add even more crispiness to it! The servers were on it, bringing us more ginger and wasabi as needed and consistently checking on us to ensure we were satisfied with our meals. My friend really enjoyed his fish sushi as well. So after the gathering ended, I went upstairs to Sushi Sasabunè since I knew from my previous experience at their Brentwood mother restaurant to be excellent. The interior is "Shibui" which in Japanese can mean artistically austere, minimalist. There is a Sushi bar, but it is reserved for Omakasè (oh mah kah seh) only. So, I couldn't sit and interact directly with the counter Sushi chef that day who was informative but aloof which is typical in Japan. I only spoke with the chef upon entry to determine what kind of specialties that he may offer. I asked for only Èdo Maè (eh doh mah eh) Nigiri Sushi that had either unusual ingredients or techniques which he delivered in spades. My young waiter né Hiroshima made up for the lack of the Sushi chef's personality delivering the various rare item Sushi with a warm conviviality. 1) Shiro Maguro/Albacore: Ultra thin, pinkish orange meat that is naturally found in between the sinews which have to be extracted by hand with tweezers. Double layered on top of hand formed Nigiri (nee ghee ree) Sushi rice, it is plush, velvety, melt in your mouth with delicately meaty Umami. Truly a food for the Gods. 2) Nodo Guro: Black throat perch that is again even more plush white meat to the point of being a touch mushy with a soupçon of sweet meatiness. To add contrast, the skin is flamed seared to add firmness and smokey accent. 3) Katsuo: Bonito is wrapped & cured in rice straw. Then the straw is burned to add light smoke. The dark crimson meat is satisfyingly beefy-meaty with taste of blood minerality from being aged like a well aged steak. The Garlic Katsuo Dashi Shōyu/soy sauce, which also seems rich in Katsuo Dashi fond de cuisine, is a good complementary addition as well as a bit of refreshing medicinal freshly ground ginger root to offset the complex Umami flavours. 1-3a) Fuku Komachi Sakè (sah keh) from Akita, Japan is astringent, dry, cleansing with fruit notes of green grape, loquat, unripe & ripe pear, overly ripe peach. There's a bitter & aged aftertaste but later, a sweet note, touch woody. Overall, a very sophisticated Sushi restaurant that has specialized cuisine for those who are interested in educating their palates. No county fair rolls that use thick sweet eel sauce, mayonnaise, Sriracha hot sauce. 4+ stars.

But worse, they include that in your bill, pre-tax, so now you're paying tax on a forced tip. Shady AF. EDIT: business owner has responded, but has not addressed that they have been charging tax on forced gratuity (I think that might be illegal? But I'm not a lawyer, so maybe it is legal to charge tax on tips in California...). Nor that their menu lacks descriptions for the food items.

(Dined/Drank 06/12/26 FR @ 8:00pm): This sake and sushi place wasn't too "far away" from my…read morehometown's stomping grounds! A dear friend and I caught up for her belated birthday at Haruka Sake And Sushi, which was once the home of one of our favorite sushi restaurants years ago in Inchiban. Neither of us could recall how long it's been since Ichiban left, but we were amazed that neither of us have tried this replacement since it opened sometime around the pandemic. We both loved to support local businesses in our old neighborhood, so we were excited to see what the new restaurant did to the place. Was it a blissful evening filled with sake, sushi, and stories, or was this place a bit far off from what we happily remembered it to be!? PURCHASE(S) Sapporo Breweries Sapporo Premium Beer 4.9% ABV 22floz Bottle ($9.00 x2): Rich amber color, malty sweet aroma, low body, light malty sweet flavor, clean smooth finish, and light malty sweet aftertaste. Always a favor with sushi! Deep Fried Shishito Peppers ($9.50): Butter sautéed shishito peppers with ponzu sauce, these slightly spicy tasty treats were fun to nibble on between sushi rolls! Sesame Chicken Karaage ($12.50): A bountiful amount of deep-fried sesame seasoned chicken pieces, this was a meal itself as I had to stop myself from feasting on these hot tender crispy nuggets! Garlic Albacore Fresh Cut Roll 8pc ($18.95): Albacore on top of a spicy tuna roll, accompanied by refreshing cucumber and topped with crispy onion and garlic served with a savory garlic ponzu sauce, this was an aromatic delight with plump succulent pieces of fish that melted in your mouth! Lion King Baked Cut Roll 8pc ($18.95): Baked spicy tuna on top of salmon wrapped California roll topped with smelt eggs, green onions, and unagi sauce, each flavorful packed piece was the size of shumai that almost made me snore than roar due to an onset of food coma! Hot Night Tempura Cut Roll 8pc ($17.95): Jalapeño, spicy tuna, sriracha on top of shrimp tempura roll, mild spicy crunch and spicy mayo on top, a beautifully-presented roll with warming spices from start to finish, I was fanning down a bit. Salmon Crazy Tempura Cut Roll 8pc ($17.95): Spicy chopped salmon on top of shrimp tempura roll, topped with spicy mayo and green onions, another beautifully-presented roll this time with buttery salmon and a light sweet tempura casing. SERVICE Warmly greeted by a young hostess, she asked if the bar was fine (which it was) and led us there where we were then met by a friendly gentleman who gave us menus and glasses of water. After a few annoyed attempts by our female server to take our order (we weren't ready), we finally got our shit together and threw it down! Within minutes, everything arrived like an assembly line with minimal space to put it all... but we managed. With plenty of leftovers, they kindly packed everything up, we paid, and off we went into the night - arigato! PARKING (FREE): They shared parking within a smallish strip mall that featured a handful of other businesses such as Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, Rice & Nori, Kobeissi Properties, and more. Otherwise, there were spots along the main drags of Foothill Blvd. and Oakwood Ave. - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A clean modern open spacious layout with plenty of barstool, booth, and table seating, and a quieter small back dining room. The bar counter gave access to the chefs as you watched them prepare each creation. No promotional items at all, while the decor was minimalistic Japanese. A decent amount of natural lighting entered through the front doors and windows while an assortment of electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs while faint music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Haruka Sake And Sushi was a wonderful replacement for our beloved Ichiban, and we will definitely return! The food was fresh and tasted wonderful, the portions rocked, the menu was vast with plenty of options, the prices were comparable, and the service was outstanding (sorry for making the server wait for us). And, I preferred to support small mom & pop businesses (they had three total locations). I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $126.00 BEFORE any discounts, points usage, and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS

I tried Haruka Sake & Sushi the other weekend with my partner and another couple, and we had a…read moregreat experience. If you're looking for an intimate date night spot, this is definitely one I'd recommend. The music was relaxing, the lighting in the main dining room was dim and cozy, and there was another seating area off to the side that was a bit brighter for those who prefer more light. The menu is straightforward, offering all the standard sushi rolls, sashimi, and appetizers you'd expect. One thing I appreciated was the inclusion of several health-conscious "rolls" that don't contain rice, which is a nice option for anyone looking to cut back on carbs or who simply isn't a fan of rice. Ordering was a little different than most sushi restaurants. Instead of ordering directly from the server, they give you a paper menu where you either check off or write the quantity of each item you'd like. It was simple and made it easy for our group to keep track of everything we ordered. There were four of us dining together. My partner ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box, which came with miso soup, a small salad, eight pieces of a California roll, mixed tempura, rice, and the chicken teriyaki. The miso soup was served piping hot, and the salad had a light ginger dressing that paired nicely with it. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll, Edamame, and split the Lobster Tail Roll with my partner. Our friends ordered the Oishii Roll and the Vegas Roll. Both rolls had interesting textures, but for me, the cream cheese overpowered the salmon. As someone who loves lox on a bagel with cream cheese, I expected to enjoy it, but the combination of cream cheese, rice, and avocado overshadowed the fish. That's completely a matter of personal preference, though. I did enjoy the contrast between the crispy tempura exterior and the cool, soft center of the rolls. Now let's talk about the Lobster Tail Roll. This was on an entirely different level. I'd never had one before, and honestly, I'd come back just for this $25 roll. There wasn't any nori holding it together, and I honestly have no idea how it managed to stay intact--but somehow it did... mostly. You'll want to pop each piece into your mouth pretty quickly before it decides to fall apart. It was absolutely delicious, and adding soy sauce would almost feel like a crime. The light drizzle of eel sauce was all it needed. Service was another highlight. Everything came out quickly, and the staff worked together like a well-oiled machine. They turned tables efficiently without ever making us feel rushed, and they were always nearby to refill our drinks before we had to ask. Pricing was also very reasonable. Our group averaged about $30 per person, depending on what everyone ordered, which I thought was fair for the quality and freshness of the food. As a bonus, Handel's Homemade Ice Cream is right next door, making it the perfect place to grab dessert after dinner. One final thing I really appreciated: the food looked exactly like the photos the restaurant advertises. It's always refreshing when what arrives at your table is just as picture-perfect as what you saw online. Overall, I'd definitely come back. Whether you're looking for a casual dinner with friends or a cozy date night, Haruka Sake & Sushi delivers a relaxing atmosphere, attentive service, and quality sushi at a reasonable price. The Lobster Tail Roll alone is worth the return trip.
