Venue: 4: Large modern venue with tables and booths. Large sushi bar. No outdoor seating (you will see a few pictures of a heated patio on Yelp, but those belong to a different Sakana location). They take reservations on Open Table which we used, but when we visited on a Friday evening they were about 60% empty. Service: 4: Servers are friendly, polite and helpful, but a little disorganized. We had to remind them about one of our appetizers four times, and it finally appeared at dessert time :D Food: 3: Large and diverse menu of sushi, sashimi, appetizers and specialty rolls, as well as Japanese and Korean cooked items. Excellent, top notch high quality nigiri and sashimi. I had the Albacore, the Saba (Japanese Mackerel) and the Hokkaido Scallop sushi and all three were excellent. Unfortunately, the appetizers and the specialty rolls were heavily drenched in sauce, and in my humble opinion lacked in taste and character. We ordered the Sunny Roll, the Double Yellow Tail Roll and the 911, and they all tasted almost the same. Prices are more or less on par with other higher quality Japanese restaurants. HUGE portions!! We came here for lunch and ordered the Chirashi bowl and Salmon Teriyaki bento. We were seated quickly by polite staff, not super crowded in the restaurant. Clean tables and store. The Chirashi bowl is perfectly balanced, with lots and lots of fish but also lots of salad greens and onions with slightly tangy dressing to balance it out. It also came with rice. Very filling and generous amounts of fresh fish. The salmon teriyaki was also very tasty. It came with rice, tempura, and other side dishes like salad. I drove from Buena Park to La Cañada last Saturday just to eat at Sakana -- and honestly, it reminded me why I don't mind traveling for good food. Instead of wasting money on mediocre places nearby and leaving disappointed, I'd rather drive an extra 30 minutes and enjoy something that actually makes me happy. People say the owner is famously picky, and maybe that's exactly why the quality here never drops. If anything, the food and service keep getting better over the years, which is unbelievable. If they ever open a location in Orange County, I'd be there all the time. But until then -- trust me and just go. I never write bad reviews but I am just so upset at the experience I had ordering from here this past Friday especially because it was a way of treating myself after having a bad day so I was looking forward to it all day. I placed an order for 2 rolls over the phone and made sure to specify for "NO CUCUMBERS" as I am highly allergic. As seen in the picture of the receipt, the specification for no cucumbers was listed in the order. However, I was utterly disappointed when I opened my order when I got home and saw that there were cucumbers in both of my rolls... It wouldn't have been a big issue for me if I simply didn't like cucumbers because I can just take them out and still eat it. However, I have a severe allergy and I can't risk eating around it because it will trigger a reaction. I was so disappointed and upset when I realized I just wasted nearly $50 on food I couldn't eat. I thought about going back to the restaurant and requesting them to remake my order but making that trip would've been a 30 min drive round trip which at that point, I was tired from a long day at work to do all that. Today, I came in with my family, and the food was out of this word! Everything was so FRESH, it completely surpassed our expectations! My son's sushi burrito was a hit, my mom's teriyaki salmon was perfectly cooked, my daughter loved her California roll, and my mixed tempura entree was exceptional. I'm writing this review specifically about staff communication and treatment of delivery drivers at Sakana Sushi on Foothill. Today I arrived to pick up an order. In my app, the pickup time clearly showed 6:29 PM. That pickup time is entered by the restaurant when they accept the order. If the food is not going to be ready for another 30 minutes, why set an earlier pickup time and make drivers wait unnecessarily? When I arrived, I politely asked how long the order would take. I was told "10 minutes." After waiting 20 minutes, I asked again and received an unclear response: "I don't know." As delivery drivers, our time is literally our income. If the order takes 30 minutes, that is completely fine -- just be honest from the beginning so we can decide whether to wait or cancel. Instead, I kept being told "5 more minutes," which turned into a long delay and wasted my time. Even if the pickup time in the app was not entered by the staff directly, once a driver arrives, the respectful and professional thing to do is give an accurate estimate. If I had been told from the start that the order would take 30 minutes, I would have cancelled immediately and accepted another delivery instead of standing there waiting. What made the experience worse was the attitude I received when I asked a simple question about timing. I remained polite the entire time and even asked to speak with a manager because the response I received was dismissive. This review is not about the food quality. It is about honesty, professionalism, and respect toward delivery drivers. Drivers are part of your service chain. My childhood friends brought me here a couple years ago and I forgot to post on Yelp. Well, I'm glad we caught up in the same place. A absolute wonderful Japanese restaurant nestled long Foothill Blvd in La Crescenta. (I sure hope they're safe in these fires). Our eyes were larger than our stomachs, and I'm so glad they were. We order so much food and I was treated to an awesome and delicious spread. The food was fresh especially the sushi. My favorite was the Chirashi bowl which to my surprise had TWO bowls of yummy goodness stacked on top of each other! Let's go!!! A pleasant surprise was the Monkey Brains appetizer. We are longtime customers who have seen a few hiccups - cleanliness / hygiene issues - over the years. But today a server - Melvin - was working double duty as a host was overtly RUDE. I was alone and asked to be seated in a booth at the back. There are four booths in that area. I came in at 3pm. Two booths were occupied - otherwise the restaurant was empty. Melvin refused to let me stay seated at a booth. I explained to him that I am a regular customer and would not be there long. He rudely told me I could not remain seated. I had never seen him before - explained again that I'm a longtime customer. He would not let me stay. As I left, I left my phone number and asked him to have a manager call me. Sakana was suggested to me today and I am always open to try a new place. It has a quaint vibe inside and a little different than I expected. I had some standard rolls that were good. Then I had a few items that made me say "WOW".The first was King Salmon Carpaccio..the presentation alone was a piece of art. The salmon was delicate perfectly sliced and the flavor bomb went off in my mouth. Truffle oil on salmon was glorious. I detected a few other flavors including citrus that made this dish delicious. This was more like a symphony...I could go back just for that item and I am a sushi lover. I had a radish roll which at first I thought might be different. It was magical..I don't know how all those beautiful bites of fresh fish were all tightly fitted together. The albacore I also had was cut thick and it melted in your mouth it was that fresh. Came here for lunch with friends right at 11:30am when they opened. The parking lot looked like it was only 30 minute parking, but I didn't have any issues parking there. The lunch specials are a great deal. Between the three of us we had the Sakana lunch special, bulgogi beef lunch special and a variety of sushi rolls. It was SO MUCH FOOD! I think the lunches ranged from $18-25 but they're definitely worth it. Mine came with miso soup, salad, tempura veggies, bulgogi beef, rice, and pickled radish and onion. I took half of it home for leftovers. Service was extremely attentive. They never let our water glasses get less than half full before coming over to refill, or checking to see if we needed anything. (Note, it was 1130am so we beat the lunch rush, I can't speak to how it is later on or at dinner). Everyone was very kind and polite. Bathrooms were fine, nothing great but clean and well stocked. Okay listen up - this is the best Sakana has been. I've been a customer for years, and their rolls have been top notch in quality recently. They've finally perfected being consistent with the rice and spicy tuna - in the past there were times when the rice was mushy and the spicy tuna was on the wet side (with a fishy taste) and I've always been a bit apprehensive about whether I'd get a good one or a bad one. Last seating or placing an order to go is 30 mins prior to the listed close sign (currently 9:30pm weekdays and 10:30pm weekends). Was waiting to be seated, noticed it was busy and was closing in 30 minutes so when gentlemen asked how many in my party I just stated I would order to go. A couple minutes later a hostess came up and I asked to place my order and she said they were closed. I apologized for wasting their time and left.
