Well I've been feeling like I haven't really been getting shoes that fit properly but also thought as I get older, foot pain and discomfort come with the territory. While walking around Holland, MI today my wife suggested that we stop by since we had nothing else to do but enjoy the downtown area. Cory met us as we entered and offered to help if he could. I had spotted a pair that I liked (color and design) and he asked my size. While he went to get them we browsed the store some. As we talked about different brands and which had the best arch support, he took me to school! I don't think I have had anyone measure my foot since my Mom took me to get shoes 40+ years ago. I've been buying the same size for decades now. Cory took several measurements and suggested that a different size might work better for me. He showed me how much things have changed since I became set in my ways. I tried on 3 different styles of tennis/ walking shoes that were nowhere on my radar. All 3 pairs felt light years better immediately. They all had a different feel about them in the way my foot seated in them, but all were extremely comfortable. Cory is trained to fit shoes correctly and I am so glad my wife suggested we stop. Yes, I bought all three pair and of course I wore a pair out. It takes 5 minutes just to get past the bots on most customer service phone numbers to get to a human these days. If stores want to build loyalty and good will, it's simple - human connection - and value your customer's time. I understand that you have the right to your policies, but I also have the option to spend my money elsewhere. My wife was looking at a specific t-shirt and the owner asked if she would like to try it on. It turned out to not be a good fit so she tried the next size. The owner made a comment that there was a maximum of two "try ons" and we thought he was joking. We were the only ones in the store. When she found a different style shirt and wanted to try it on, he wouldn't let her. He said, "at these prices I'm not here to be your concierge." I would maybe understand if it was a busy day during the summer but it was a Tue AM at the end of Sept and we were the only two people in the store. He was far more concerned with how the shirts were placed on the hanger than making a sale. And that's where they'll stay - on the hanger. It was extremely disappointing because he is a talented artist. He just has no aptitude for customer service.
