This place must be under New Management yet again! They've changed everything about it, but kept the old menus. Though I am fond of the new pickle slices/chips that they have, they now have crinkle fries, when you order a deluxe, it no longer comes with the coleslaw and the fries. Speaking of the coleslaw, that has completely changed and includes black olives! You know how they used to put the meat in the pot and let it boil a little bit before they put it on the fryer? That is no longer a thing, which makes the meat less flavorful and moist. Definitely don't have to come back here again for a while. read more

I ordered a lamplighter (corned beef and pastrami with Swiss cheese,coleslaw and Russian dressing on grilled rye), and a jumbo corned beef sandwich. The staff actually sent me extra coleslaw at no charge when I asked for a generous portion. The sandwiches were fresh,hot and stacked HIGH with meat & creamy coleslaw.. This is a really small old fashioned diner, with just a few seats for dining in,and no public restroom. But the atmosphere is friendly and the staff is wonderful. As a customer coming to this location for 40 years, I will never return. Did I say enough? From the burnt fish dinner, smaller size and yes, no more fresh rye bread and butter. Instead a greasy piece of garlic bread, over done small breaded fish, coleslaw, tarter sauce inedible. Even the pickles are not the same. I like others do not want a refund or my order remade, just want the quality and menu stated to be served. The owner stated they no longer serve bread and butter but it says it in the menu and the past 40 years. Very disappointed, will never return to this establishment. I've driven by this place many times, but I've always been in too much of a hurry to stop. That's the downside of being located on a busy thoroughfare like 8 Mile. I'm happy I changed that today. I envisioned a menu with 3 items on it (like a Reuben, a pastrami sandwich, and fries). But, the menu is a diner-sized cross-section of various sandwiches (including gyros) and fried fish. But, why would I go into a place called House of Reuben and order anything but a Reuben? I decided to get the "king-sized" Reuben, which really did live up to its name. It's served on pumpernickel bread, with massive amounts of corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss. There's a mustard sauce on there, but you'll have to ask for thousand Island dressing if you want it. This is a very good sandwich. If you want to get a Reuben, this is the place to go. But, one notable downside of this lunch counter restaurant is that there are no public bathrooms. No, I'm not kidding. This seems like a good place to get a carry out, but you'll have to plan ahead if you plan on eating here for a meal. read more

My parents were best friends with the owners of New York Deli... both me and my mother working there after my father passed many years ago... new owners now, but this place reminds me of the authentic rueben's with the daily fresh corned beef they used to make!! What a great little spot! Walked in and got greeted by a super friendly lady and one chef. Turns out they are married and what a dynamic duo! I had some beef barley soup and it was outstanding! Great Sandwich and fries, the two people I dealt with at the walk up window were both friendly. The red koolaid I had was also really good. I hear the fish & chips is excellent as well as the other sandwiches and I'm looking forward to trying all of it. The homemade chili was pretty decent but came out not hot. I would say the corned beef is excellent, in my top 5 but not the best. Having said that, it is still very, very good. My family and I had gone to this place since the days it was known as the purple pickle. I have tried both locations and the sandwiches are stacked with quality meat. I generally just get the house special and if I'm especially famished I will opt for the king size portion of it. The corned beef is delicious and fresh, most of the time. Went there today and got myself a stacked sandwich and their signature deli pickles to accompany it. I had to mark them down today due to their beef barley. I've always been a fan of their beef barley, I'd previously proclaimed it as some of the, if not the, best in the area. Now, I haven't been there in some time but their beef barley isn't the same. It was darker than usual, had a water like consistency and the taste was off. I don't know when this was changed but I remember when they were making, lighter and thicker more traditional beef barley. Also, I ordered a quart (their biggest size possible) to take home and ran into maybe 3 or 4 pieces of beef throughout the entire container. This was rather disappointing because that soup was the perfect accompaniment for their outstanding sandwiches but that cannot be said anymore, in my opinion. Not sure if I'll be so willing to return anytime soon, there are other restaurants in the area that have waaaaay better soup and similar deli choices that are pretty decent and a little less pricey. Been going there for years, however since they finished remodeling a few years ago they don't let customers use the restroom, I've had no problem using it for over 10 years, but now it is an issue, I know it is in the kitchen but how are they gonna sell these huge messy sandwiches but give no place to wash hands or relieve oneself.
