Do not come here if you expect food to be served in a reasonable amount of time. We ordered 3 sandwiches. Over 50 minutes have passed and still no food. We have received a lot of excuses though. If the wait for simple sandwiches is this extreme they should at least advise you of it upon entering. We will never go back. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE. Whether or not it's for breakfast or lunch anything we get is ALWAYS amazing. Darlene are waitress was very kind and friendly, answered any and all questions we had. Steve I believe is the owner was very nice as well and accommodating. Today I got the half sandwich tuna melt with cabbage roll soup. Cabbage roll soup was a special and tasted divine it was very filling and was perfect, the tuna sandwich was also very yummy I love all the additions they add to it. My first and not last visit. Great service the menus is small but very unique. Town Club pop. Fried bologna or spam sandwiches. I had the number 13. Went in for brunch. I ordered the pastrami hash with two over easy eggs and white toast. The hash was fantastic the pastrami was smoked great flavor. The potatoes were prepared well. Doesn't look like much when you drive by, but when you go in it's a really nice cute little restaurant with black and white plaid table clothes and a great menu. The "home room" sandwich menu has so many options and offers customizable items too. The pastrami and corned beef are very succulent. And the onion rings are HUGE! Yet another place that's been on my list forever, and now I've had a chance to try it. I wish I hadn't waited so long. The parking lot is in pretty bad shape, but drive through or around the potholes - it's worth it. It's a cute little place outside and in, with a retro vibe. We were greeted warmly, and given a menu that was like a newsletter. Lots to choose from for breakfast and otherwise, plus specials on the board. We settled on the French dip, a club sandwich, and the excellent (and plentiful for a small order) house-made fried mushrooms. The club sandwich hit the spot, with hand-carved turkey that was so much better than lunch meat. Stopped in today on a whim. I had the hot roast beef (with homemade mashed potatoes), hubby had podium burgers (ginormous sliders) & daughter had the wise guy (cheesesteak). OMG! What an amazing hidden gem! The lead server is super sweet & the head chef & owner was great too! The food was fantastic! It has a divey old time 50s diner feel to it. A local business revived - yet another solid restaurant in the area. Open less than a year, this restaurant is a nice diner just south of 13 Mile Road along Michigan's M-97 Highway. 1st off, the staff here did a wonderful job in service, and the owner was on hand to personally see to it that everyone was greeted and all their needs were met. Their menu is on news print, simple, but chocked full of whimsical choices. Found inside 4 pages, their breakfast offerings fill 2 pages, and spill onto a 3rd. For breakfast, I ordered the A12 Peek-a-boo eggs (2 slices of bread with the center cut out and your eggs fried inside). Select 3 items from the appropriate Tag Alongside list and you have a full breakfast. My 3 sides were hash browns, 3 slices of ham, and to go along with that, 3 slices of spam (ham & spam, they rhyme all the time!) Delivered on 2 plates, I enjoyed making the food disappear. I'll have to admit, I was nicely surprised this morning after arriving and finding 3 tables with dining patrons. I selected a table back and away from the windows, able to take in much of the restaurant from my vantage point. Adorning the walls were pictures of Detroit in the past - one of the Boblo boats, Detroit's famed train station in its heyday, Vernor's Street sign and iconic Gnome - all this and more, pleasant memories of the past. Also found up by the kitchen were items of use years ago - hand tabulation machines, a mini juke box, an old grocery scale, and others. Their electric bread slicer is purported to be the oldest of its kind, but is still put to daily use. Getting back to my dining experience, a group of people converged upon Old School Deli and ruined my tranquility. I ain't too smart, but there were 3 more people than I could count using all of my fingers, and they all seemed to fit around the large table near me (since this is old school, I suppose they were seated 'cafeteria style'). Perhaps my tranquility was replaced with a warmth easily felt whenever a departing patron rang the school bell on the way out the door. It slipped my mind to do so myself, so I'll do it now - ring, ring! Their parking lot could use a touch-up, but don't let that deter you from paying them a visit when they're open. I don't remember all of the details, but discounts are given to older folks and active duty military, and perhaps others. I'll return as a repeat customer. read more

We had never ordered from there before all we wanted on this rainy Sunday was sandwiches.. I called there I asked to place a carry out.. the lady's answer well it depends we're out of everything so I asked for a sandwich with cornbeef she said we're out of that like I said.. super rude .. Damn, actual Homemade biscuits w gravy. Not the preformed lumps of dough like most places and a good sausage gravy. On Sundays they also have SOS which was also really good. I'll be back to try their house made pastrami and corned beef. read more

I am not sure how this restaurant has received so many great reviews! I have been wanting to try this place for some time and today was the day for a late breakfast. I had read that their corned beef has was homemade and I ordered without hesitation. --- Husband ordered the same. --- Only one other customer in the place and we waited 40 minutes for our order. --- And what a disappointment! A huge pile of very large cubes of undercooked potatoes with a bed of chopped corned beef underneath. Hash? No onions, peppers or browning of anything.....the eggs served with the hash were spot on, however-hence the one star. --- My husband's toast was burnt to a crisp but we had waited so long and had another appointment so did not send back. ---I'm not sure if there is new ownership, etc, but save your money We wont be back. read more

I live right up the road from this place and drive by it on a daily basis. For the last two years there had been a "COMING SOON!" sign and I was starting to think the place would never open. Now that it has I will honestly say the wait was totally worth it. The place looks amazing on the inside. I had never been in there before it became the Old School Deli as it had been vacant for about 6 years. From what I had heard they basically gutted and remodeled the entire thing because it was so out of code. Yes they took their time, but it shows. The food was great and I like the way they have their menu set up for breakfast items. You basically pick the main item (for me it was Eggs Benedict) and then you get to pick from a long list of "Tag Alongs" (sides) to go with it. They set it up this way because not all people like the standard hashbrowns and toast that come with most breakfast dishes. You get a lot for you buck too. I think it was around $7 for the Benedict and you got to pick three sides that included juice, fruit, toast, hashbrowns, pancakes, bacon, sausage, spam (yes spam) and much more. I opted for toast, pancakes and the spam only because it had been 20+ years since I last had it and where else could I go outside of Hawaii that had spam on the menu? The Eggs Benedict were amazing. The eggs were poached perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was creamy and smooth. The star of the dish though was the english muffin. They are handmade in house much like the rest of the menu and were rich and buttery and had a crunch to the exterior, but were soft and chewy on the inside. They are nothing like you would expect the standard english muffin to be. The pancakes had to be some of the fluffiest pancakes I have ever had and had a hint of vanilla taste to them. Ah and then there was the spam. Like I said it had been over 20 years since my last encounter with this loaf style meat product and I must say I actually liked it. It was fried up and tasted like a ham/bacon hybrid. The service was very good and our drinks never were empty and Steve the owner seems like a really nice and down to Earth kind of guy. He came by our table thanking us for coming in and told us about the restaurant and the menu. I like the fact that they try to source as much of their stuff from Michigan based companies too as it shows they care about the local economy which makes me want to support them even more. Another great thing about the place is that if you eat there on your Birthday you get your meal at the cost of what minimum wage was the year of your birth. One guy came in while were were there excited to get his $0.30 meal. All in all everything was great and I think we have found our new favorite breakfast joint to go to on the weekends. read more

Since my first review I have been to the Old School a few more times. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars now. The following is what I like and what has me downgrading my initial review. Service is friendly and has gotten quicker than on our first visit. The owner is a treat, and if he's not busy you will find him at your table asking how the food is, or explaining the menu to newbies. Nice touch! The decor is fun, and the place is clean. I always like being able to see the cooking area, as it reassures me of the care one takes with food preparation. I've now had breakfast here twice, and it needs work. The bacon was cheap, with a lot of fat, and was undercooked, therefore greasy. Ugh. I did try the pancakes on my son's plate, and they were tasty. I asked for dry toast, it came buttered. My spouse ordered the corned beef hash, thinking it would probably be homemade here and therefore yummy. The meat was chewy(!) and the hash greasy. He was very disappointed, as he was remembering corned beef hash that was wonderful (we later decided that was at Emerson's on the Grill in Mt. Clemens-shameless plug for a place we like a lot). DH left almost all the meat on his plate. On my last visit, I again ordered the corned beef/pastrami sandwich that had me so thrilled on my first trip here. I asked for it without the dressing, and a side of mustard. The first time out, it had the dressing on it, and the server promptly offered to return it to the kitchen. When the new sandwich arrived, it was really greasy, from the bun to the meat-nowhere near the delectable treat I remembered. My friend on that visit had a ham sandwich she thought was amazing, including the bread that they use here. She ate the entire thing, which was lots of meat! They also gave her a side of horseradish, which made her day. I have introduced some friends and family to this joint, and plan to bring another with me next week. I sure hope that visit surpasses my last two, or I'll start looking for another breakfast/lunch joint to fill my cravings. read more

Server: great our server was very friendly. Ambiance: old diner style. The food: Pretty good! I had the school bus wheel that has corned beef and pastrami and he had the pledge of elegance but they were out of pastrami so it only had corned beef on it and both were really good. The meet to bread ratio was perfect. The fried mushrooms were tasty to the batter was not over powering. I had a side of fries and they were good not to greasy. I only gave 3 stars because they were out of a lot of stuff on the menu. I will try again later and hopefully they have the pastrami. read more

My experience started with the owner welcoming me in a quiet friendly demeanor, my breakfast choice of sides was fruit and cottage cheese, which came immediately with hot coffee. Been here 3 times and it's always been on point. Beef barley soup with just a little gristle (yum) in it so you know it's made in house. Had the corned beef the first time and it was delicious. But the second and third time I had something off the menu recommend by the owner called the dirty Devon. Sliced roast beef with grilled onions and mushrooms served with gravy. I think it's supposed to be served open face covered in the gravy but I get it on the side and dip it cause I usually don't have time to eat the whole thing. And omg it's fucking amazing!!!!! I feel like this could be the only thing they ever sell and still have a packed house lol. Oh and they seasoned fries tossed in salt and pepper are great. I'll probably be back in the next week. Oh and next time I'm ordering extra gravy and cheese to make my self a poutine! I think that should be on the menu lol read more

Kudos to Old School Deli Restaurant! Steve Morse, owner and Bishop Foley Catholic HS alumni, catered an amazing breakfast buffet for the BFC players, parents, and coaching staff. Deliciously decadent donut baked French toast. Crispy bacon and perfectly browned sausage. Mouth watering scrambled eggs layered with ribbons of cheddar cheese. Refreshing watermelon slices. Perfectly ripe bananas. Fresh bagels with creamy spreads. Fruit juice and coffee. An over the top food coma was enjoyed by all. Quite the task to accomplish with tables full of hungry football players. The bonus is that Steve and Old School Deli Restaurant and Catering has signed up to host each team dinner this year! Yummy after church stop with the husband and four kids. Everything was fresh and delicious. The servers were attentive and the owner was super friendly. Good customer service goes a long way in my book! The fried mushrooms and ranch were just the right amount of fried. The coleslaw was delicious and sweet. My husband and I had a Reuben and the hero.
