I am a frequent customer of the original New York Deli on Garfield Rd. I had lunch there, today with my boyfriend (Monday) awful experience! They have changed everything about the New Yorker. The sandwhich has less meat ( although) they are charging less, no doubt, the sandwhich is much smaller. Also they no longer offer you the small cup of either the potato salad or coleslaw anymore. if you want both the fee was another $3.00. Why are they doing this? We won't be back! I'm hoping the other original New York Deli in St. Clair shores is not doing these changes. I told my waitress the sandwhich was horrible. She said she didn't think they did anything different. Diner beware! The menus states: with a deli sandwich order, fries or onion rings + $5.00. Pretty simple. However ordered a bowl of chilli and my son ordered a New Yorker deli sandwich order and yes, add an order of onion rings. Received the bill and I am charged $11.00! I brought it to waitress attention and she says there is nothing she can do about it. I asked an older woman and she wants to argue! "That's the price. Ordered 2 sandwiches today - 1 NYer with half order onion rings and 1 turkey bacon club and bag of chips. Talk about price gouging. Bread was grilled on turkey club and filled with a ton of lettuce and tomatoes and 2 pieces of bacon and a sliver of turkey. Swiss cheese was sliced so thin you could see through it. I asked for turkey to be grilled and I got a cold sandwich. NYer was ok. Nothing to brag about. Won't be coming back here. Oh chips was a 1 ounce mini bag. Very disappointed . Second time getting the New Yorker within the last two months, the meat was very chewy and a lot of fat not the same quality for 19.50 you can't even get the 2 ounce cup of potato salad. You have to buy it separate so the sandwich alone is 19.50. The prices are very high for the area. There's a lot better deals for that price. They lost me as a customer. read more

New to the area and craving a Julian salad. This was easily 3 meals worth! Very loaded already and I added grilled chicken. Meats and cheeses were top quality and the Italian dressing was so so good. I actually really liked the food here but my complaint is with the staff. When we arrived we were the only customers in the place and the employee that cleans the tables was sitting in a booth talking on her speaker phone for about a half hour. She was talking so loud that we actually couldn't carry on a conversation at our table. The waitress was nice enough but never came to check on us while we were eating and I was waiting to get my water refilled. This was in an empty restaurant so I know she wasn't busy waiting on other tables. Like I said, I did enjoy the food - so I think if I ever order from here again I would get a carryout so that I don't have to deal with the issues of bad employees! read more

Great Corned Beef and Pastrami sandwich and service. Made 2 meals out of one sandwich.

Welcomed upon approach to counter in a clean establishment with friendly staff. What more could you want when picking up carry out? I ordered the corned beef 6oz sandwich, rye grilled well, horseradish, and slaw. Portioning was superb. I can't describe how important portions are, but this place understands portions to a tee. Greek salad with chicken. Two adults could share this and easily be full! I walked right in and ordered it to go. It was ready for me within five minutes, even though they were busy with lots of other people picking up takeout, as well as a few tables that were seated. The servers were very friendly as well. For some reason, when I walked in, I ignored the "restaurant" word from their sign and forgot it is a restaurant. They have wait staff, a bunch of tables and booths. Decent size place really, for a deli. I don't really get a lot of deli food actually. My interest only shined on it this year. This place is the second place I tried for deli sandwiches. It was really good but I guess I didn't read carefully enough to figure out it wasn't hot corned beef etc. I prefer have hot corned beef, pastrami etc sandwiches. So that was a bummer but still decently enjoyed my sandwich. If you're dining in, they ask you if you want pickles. It is free, so go for it you pickle lovers. My sandwich I chose came with a side of potato salad or coleslaw. They give you a good amount I would say. Not those little sauce container of it but a good heaping scoop. It was good, not my favorite (potato salad). They have a lot of variety. From your typical appetizers and not so typical. A bunch of different sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs, also has Italian foods etc. check out their menu, you'll see what I mean. Also, cheesecake provided by the cheesecake Shoppe!! SCORE. The staff here is friendly and seemed professionally outgoing and laidback. You're comfortable around them. As I said before, a great amount of seating. It's spacious I would say. Food is way over priced for the portion that you get. We paid over $50 dollars for 2 sandwiches with fries and a drink.

The only thing I'm mad about is how I waited so long to try this place. I hadn't been to a New York Deli since I was a kid so it had been ages. This place definitely deserves all of the positive reviews. We went on a Tuesday evening and were seated right away. The waitress (I believe the check had her name listed as Shpresa) came over right away to take our drink order. She was really friendly and helpful the entire meal. After she brought the drinks she quickly returned with a bowl full of pickles. Since it had been a LONG time since I had been to one of their locations, I did not remember this at all. Nice touch, especially to those like myself who enjoy dill pickles! I read someone else's review on here praising the fried cauliflower so I went in knowing I would be ordering it. Their review was spot on--it was incredible. The batter they use is excellent and they were very hot. I would absolutely get them again, and other breaded appetizers. I ordered the six piece wing ding dinner as the entree. They have an upgrade to nine pieces for an additional $3. I might do this if I am not getting an appetizer, but I knew it would be too much food. I ordered the chicken noodle soup with my meal, which is always my go-to in terms of soup. Theirs was excellent--definitely one of my favorite family restaurant chicken noodle soups in the area. The only other place I can think to compare the soup to is Theo's in Warren. The wing dings were also delicious. They were cooked perfectly and very crispy. I also enjoyed their fries, because as I've written before, I am always pleased when restaurants do NOT serve coated fries. These fries were great. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you haven't been yet. I will certainly be back in the future to try other items on the menu. I wish I would have found this place sooner and I also wish I took a picture of the New York Style Ruben I got. That sandwich was so delicious and filling. They pile on the corned beef and coleslaw. I also love that they put the Russian dressing on the side (as it was the first time I tired it) and that dressing was phenomenal. Plus you get a big pickle on the side! Placed a carryout and the food was way over priced for 2 sandwiches, beef barley soup and 2 extra pickles. The tuna sandwich I ordered with extra meat, onion, avocado was a joke. At least 1/4 of each half of the sandwich was missing tuna (that I ordered extra) avocado. The avocado that I paid extra for consisted of a slim slice on each half of the sandwich. I paid for extra pickles the pickles were soft and soggy. I thought your signature trademark the crunchy pickles?? The size portions are much smaller. I guess when you use smaller pieces of bread it heps fool people. The soup was good. I don't mind paying hard earned money on a meal if it is worth it. read more

Went here today for lunch around 1:30ish and holy cow. The service was so incredibly SLOW. Perhaps it's just short staffed? But the food came maybe 30-45 minutes after sitting. The server wasn't really on top of things and after about 30 minutes of not having food, I was ready to leave. The corned beef Reuben was good, but for $11, I would have expected more sauerkraut, cheese, and a thicker bread. And it comes with a choice of potato salad or coleslaw. I don't like either so I asked if I could do an up charge of another side and the server said they don't do that. But the free pickles and breaded cauliflower are always amazing. read more

I haven't been to a New York deli in probably 25 years, but I never forgot that the food was generally of good quality, and the service was usually pretty good as well. We arrived at opening, which was a little weird because the waitresses and cooks were still settling in for the day. One of the best things about New York deli is how expansive their menu is. There's a lot to choose from, you're sure to find something you like. My son went with their bacon cheeseburger, but she seems to order no matter where we go. On this occasion it was well prepared and came with fries that looked good as well. I went with a Gyro, and was pleased that it came out as ordered, without onions. The Gyro itself was delicious, and had a perfect balance of spice, tenderness, and texture. I was also quite pleased with the sauce that came on it. Service was good throughout our visit, my coffee cup was refilled twice, and my son so it was refilled as well. For 20 bucks total, this is a very good value. read more

we tried to go to a neighboring restaurant but the wait was too long. NY DELI really hit the spot. I got the New Yorker, pastrami and corned beef on rye w/ swiss cheese and russian dressing. It was amazing and huge! I almost didn't get it because they NY Deli by my house never makes it very good. Boy what a pleasant surprise. My hubby got the club sandwich and he loved that the meat was thing sliced but a lot of it. That's his favorite sandwich so he know what's good. While I was waiting for a carryout tonight, the lead female at the counter had her hands ALL OVER HER FACE AND WIPING AT HER EYES because she said she could feel something in her eyes. She then opened a wrapped sandwich to check what it was before putting it in a black bag with two Styrofoam containers. Then she used some hand sanitizer from below the front counter. This same female with large blond high lights pulled back with a type of white hair tie revealing dark roots, then walked back toward the walk-in cooler, wiping her nose and her eyes again with her right hand. Think she may have again used a squirt of hand sanitizer. When I told her I saw what she had been doing, she began lying and thought I was going to argue with her.
