Joe from Houseworks came out on a Thursday for a quote to replace 4 skylights on a single family home and said he would get back to me that day or the next, even offered a couple remote control options and said he may be able to include one with the work being done. I waited until the next Wednesday for a response and then sent him an email in case there was a transcription error when I provided my email over the initial call with them. This was over a month ago. Clearly the job was too big or complicated for them. Look to their competitors if you need a a similar or larger job done because it seems they would not be able to handle yours. read more

We had Velux Skywindows with solar darking shades installed in 2019. The process of installation went perfectly and we are very pleased with the darking shades that have cut our AC consumption. About a month ago one of the shades began to separate from the window frame. Larry from Houseworks came out and found that the factory failed to install three screws that held in the shade. In October of last year, we purchased a home that was built in 1957. The previous owners had lived in it for over 37 years and definitely took some shortcuts on home maintenance. ***FAKE 10 YEAR WARRANTY*** I had two solar powered attic fans installed at my home in Park Ridge for $1,300.00 on 7/11/2011. I was told that the solar fans and the installation are warrantied for 10 years. Both fans were checked this year by myself and neither of the fans were working. I called Houseworks Solutions to see when a service man could come out and replace the two units. Houseworks Solutions said that the company of the fan motor is no longer in business. They said they would give me the name of some one I can PURCHASE replacement fan motors from? I tried to explain that I purchased the fans BECAUSE of the 10 year warranty. I tried to tell Houseworks Solutions that it is not my problem that the person that supplied the motors went out of business. I told them that it was his responsibility to back up the product that he installed and sold me under his 10 year warranty I cannot recommend this company to do any type of work at your home or your place of business. My husband & I chose Houseworks for blind installation on our skylights and were thoroughly disappointed. They ordered the wrong blinds twice. By the time the correct blinds were ordered and installed, the entire summer passed. We wasted hundreds of dollars on energy costs that would've otherwise been saved. Worst of all, they blamed the mistakes on us and tried giving a science lecture on how infrared energy causes heat, not sunlight. I guess the customer's not always right. Go elsewhere. read more

These folks are top-notch. In April there was a storm with huge hail that got us a new roof, including replacement of two skylights that were damaged. We figured when getting the new roof it would be perfect time to add a couple of skylights to another dark area of our home. Figuring all of that out was a headache when dealing with various roofers and I was getting frustrated...until I found these fine folks and once I did find them all of my skylight confusion was gone -- magically. They made the process painless took the time to explain our options and why they were best-suited for the job. This is all they do - and it shows because their work is fantastic. Back to their recommendations - they made recommendations that were not even on my radar (hello tax credit and holy cow, sun tunnels are ahhh-mazing for small areas!). We ended up replacing the damaged skylights which were manual with solar-powered ones, with a gateway that makes them SUPER-skylights and decided to wait on the installation of new ones in the other area of our home. I wanted to have some time with the replacement skylights before making the decision which type of skylights to add. A sun tunnel was also suggested since they are pretty surprisingly cost effective - a Big Bang for your buck. And boy are they! Communication was second-to-none and every single person from those in the office, to sales to the installer were amazing. They bent over backwards when our roof replacement was delayed due to rain and we had to postpone the original install date to get us on the schedule within a reasonable amount of time. These folks are at the top of my list as far as contractors go. Zero disappointments...and that's not often a thing with contractors. I'm certain we'll be working with them again in the next year...I'm so grateful to have found them. read more

I was generally pleased with the work done on our skylights - we had four replaced with new skylights with blinds. They replaced the skylights in conjunction with the roof work being done and programmed our new blinds remote. So far, I have no issues with the work done. What I do have issue with is the communication with who I'm assuming is the office staff. I had been doing all the communication with the office, copying my fiance on all emails. At the beginning everything was fine. However, during the lead-up to getting the installation done, they starting communicating with my fiance only, not me (the person paying and staying home to let the workers in as required). Additionally, they only sent HIM the invoice (again, not me, the one paying), and only sent HIM the completed invoice (again, not me, the one who wrote the check). I would encourage them to take a look at who's communicating with whom and verify they're including all parties, especially the person who paid for the work. read more

I recently purchased 2 new skylights and a solar powered velux window shade (from Jeff) for one of the skylights. When they arrived on site to install they forgot that I ordered the shade. I was told it would take approximately 2 hours to install the windows and shade. The installer installed the skylights and then left for a while to obtain the shade. He ended up at my house ~9am to 4pm. While installing the shade he told me it is not working. Then around 4 he said the shade is installed, but does not work because it needs to be charged and it will work the next day. Of course the next day the shade did not work. I called Houseworks and spoke with Buff and told him I want a new shade. Buff told me this is a warranty issue between me and velux. I told him I wanted Houseworks to replace this immediately and then resolve this behind the scenes with velux. Buff refused this request and told me I needed to call the velux rep, even though the shade never worked out of the box. Finally a velux rep showed up over a week later and installed a new shade. The new shade is wrinkled on the edges! I called Buff and told him this. Here is his reponse: Tom, Here is the response from VELUX Solutions. The "wrinkling" of the fabric at the sides will diminish over time. The black tabs which hold the fabric into the rails is where the distortion occurs. This distortion of the fabric dissipates over time with heat and use of the shade. If the shade is left in the down position it helps remove the distortion in the fabric much faster. While this may seem to be a problem with the shade, it is normal and not considered a defect. As for the controller, the shade I installed is a RF model and the previously installed unit was an IR unit and the remotes are not compatible with each other. Not only that, but Jeff was extremely kind and helpful when he explained the inspection and replacement process.
