Updating my prior review. A bunch of the fish I got died over time, a few weeks after I put them in my tanks. They had some sort of bacterial infection. Not sure what was going on, but it could have been a problem with the new fish, as none of my fish got sick. I will likely still get fish there as they have a great selection, but will definitely quarantine them first, and may treat them prophylactically. Which may not be a bad idea wherever you get your fish from. read more

i went today and I was going to buy a couple of fish, i Did not know fish had to had an oxygen machine thing, or bacteria. They helped us and showed us how to set it up, before selling us the fish! i love this place, they really care about their animals and offer to help all the time. Bought a Falco Hawkfish that died in quarantine less than 24 hours later. They offered no resolution, no refund, no replacement, but they will test your water, though. Never will get my saltwater business again! read more

I was looking for a specific type of fish that is hard to find in my area. After looking online and multiple sites were sold out of this particular fish I was excited to find them in stock at HAW. I ordered 3 of them and I was very excited to get them. When they arrived they were all alive and seemed to be in good health. After putting them in my quarantine tank and getting some light on them I quickly realized they were not the specific kind that I had ordered but another similar sub species. I emailed HAW and told them I had specifically wanted the fish that I had order and they tried to assure it was indeed that species. After posting some pictures of the fish on my fish keeping page over 25+ members all came to the same conclusion as me. They were in fact not the species I had ordered. HAW has told me there are no refunds because they are the correct type of fish. I will never buy from them again! read more

This store and its personnel are a joke! Don't waste your time and money with the inexperienced personnel and worst quality fish I have experienced in the 50+ years of keeping and breeding freshwater and marine species. Total waste of time and money. There are many quality fish stores within Houston with experienced personnel that are far superior to HAW. Let the buyer beware. read more

Now this... is an establishment worth coming to if you are new to the hobby or long time advocate. Plenty of HEALTHY fish to select from and MORE supplies than you'd care to know about. Just know if there is something that you need, John at HAW will have it for you. Not only does this location provide for all your needs, but John (owner) is extremely knowledgeable in the hobby and his passion shows when you talk fish with him. I really wanted to like this place. They had a nice assortment of Neocaridina. The first thing I noticed was that the tanks were so damn dark. I needed a flashlight to see in the tank. The second thing I noticed was there was a good amount of dead shrimp at the bottom of the tank. This is always a red flag. The shrimp were inexpensive so I went for it because I was going to quarantine them anyway away from my established colony. Within 24 hours, I lost one. I also noticed that two of them had Vorticella and I pulled a leech from another. Definitely not wasting my time or money here in the future since the care is obviously lacking here. read more

OK not a lot to say but the owner was very rude and not very customer friendly. Walked into literally a warehouse with dirty fish tanks. The inside had no lighting and a dark ambience. Many of these fishes are imported from south america or asia and may die soon after getting in your tank simply from stress despite proper acclimation. Under new management. This shop improved tremendously! The shopkeeper I spoke with is very knowledgeable and helpful, never pushy. I bought some guppies, plants and substrate. I have a lot of questions that he answered patiently. They have different species of fish but limited amount in each tank in my opinion. I hope this would improve. The fishes look healthy and the tanks clean. The plants look like it needs some TLC but I don't know if this is just die backs from being immersed. I plan on going often as I had just purchased a bigger tank. read more

Tanks are dirty for a place where they specialize in discus. However all the discus and other fish I've got from this place are doing well. Store is very small and if there's more than two customers it's hard to get around and shop. Owner (old guy with the mustache) knows nothing about how to tell male and female discus apart. If you want more info about the fish you're buying the owner is no good in helping out. Owner don't do any ordering so he's pretty much receiving random orders of fish. Owner knows no info when he will get the next shipment or what fish he will get. I think that's just ridiculous. Be aware when you buy nerite snails from him. I wanted to buy two and over half of the snails he had (out of atleast 50 snails) were dead and he didn't even know. If you want discus he's the only one who sells healthy discus in Houston area. Make sure you do your own research about the fish because if you ask anything from the owner he gonna blow you off. Once he told me flying foxes are the same as SAE. Don't shop here. My first visit was for plants. They gave me snails, 3 kinds of pest snails from 1 plant. I let it go and figured it wasn't a big deal. It's common when you don't buy tissue cultures. I run 4 tanks at home. Everything from a 10 gallon to an aquascaped 40 breeder. They have black hair algae in all the non-discus tanks(clearly they only care about their higher end fish). You'll notice they have their own wall. This isn't much of an issue unless you buy plants, but that could ruin a tank quick so don't buy plants from here unless you want black algae or snails. Some algae is so bad, the sponge filter just looks like a wig. It would be super easy and cheap to clean or cycle a bunch of new filters to replace them. I'm very aware that ultra clean tanks aren't the best to keep fish, but when it's that bad...someone hasn't been putting in the time needed. I bought 3 Gourami and 15 tetra. He threw in an extra 1, most likely because he saw it swimming funny. Sure enough when I got home 1 was having problems swimming and floating upside down. Died an hour or so later. 24 hours after I bought the tetra I saw ich spots. They've been dropping 1 by 1 and I have 2 left that seem to be responding to treatment. The Gourami's I got from them are fine even while in the same tank. They came from a separate tank than the tetra. I spent more on the ich treatment than the tetra. Anyone that knows about Ich knows it doesn't reach the spot stage for X amount of days...so this was there at the fish place and not my freshly cycled and ready tank. Clearly they don't care about their cheap fish. Honestly, if petco has it, go with them. At least you can return dead fish with a water sample and get your money back. They were also trying to sell very small cardinal tetra...you couldn't even tell they were cardinals. Yet they want almost $3ea? Nah man. They don't quarantine and treat fish that come in. Most places like this don't, but the no returns on fish policy is what annoys me. I expect to lose a few due to breeding issues or hidden parasites...but almost all of them?! Don't buy here, if you can find it at Petco, get it there...at least you can take them back when they die from some hidden disease or parasite. It's very frustrating to know your tank parameters are cycled and in check...and a bunch of fish die of something. read more

I have been using Houston Aquarium Warehouse for quite some time now. No, it is not fancy, and yes, you will encounter some empty tanks from time to time. That said, the fish are the most interesting you will find in Houston, very healthy, and incredibly well priced. ( Seems like you pay for the fancy facilities at other shops.) If you are looking for discus, there is simply no other place to shop. The discus here are beautiful and healthy, and I have not bought a single discus that has not thrived. I did accidentally kill an entire tank of them once, but, my fault. I currently have a 150 gallon tank with 15 discus in it, all purchased from Houston Aquarium Warehouse, and they could not be happier. Some of the fish have been going strong for almost two years, and were bought at the size of a half dollar and are now bigger than my hand. This is without doubt the best fish store I have ever used, and I have kept fish in one way or another since I was a small kid. Looking forward to the next shipment of discus so I can complete stocking my tank! read more

My son had a fish tank for his Birthday.We were looking for fishes and went to big pet stores.Because he is a beginner and has few knowledge with fishes no one was able to help him to make the right choice it was like buying food in a supermarket.I found warehouse.on Yelp not to far away from my house and we decided to take a look. It was the right decision,yes it's not fancy it's a Warehouse and fishes were moving healthier not sick like we just saw in huge pet stores.The owner was extremely helpful he took his time to help us to make the right choice and gave us a lot of explanations and told us to call back if we have any problems.He never push us to buy he is just passionate by fishes and share his passion and turn it in business.definitively we will be back. read more
