    Happy #Domecoming 2018!
    John D.

New York has Lady Liberty. Paris has the Eiffel Tower. Sydney has its opera house. The Astrodome is Houston's answer to all those. I must confess that despite being a lifelong resident of the Houston area, I've never been to the Eighth Wonder in the World when it was the place to catch the Astros, the Oilers, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and concerts. The recent Domecoming celebration was my actual first time. I stood outside with hundreds of Houston sports fans for three hours just to go inside the Astrodome. Once inside, we moved in a single file snapping pictures and viewing exhibits. It was humbling to walk on the same hallowed ground on which Elvin Hayes dribbled, Earl Campbell ran, Nolan Ryan pitched, Selena Quintanilla-Perez sashayed, and many a high school football team competed. The venue was stripped of its seats and famed AstroTurf, but I enjoyed the one hour I spent touring this iconic sports landmark. A $105 million redevelopment project will transform the Astrodome into an events space within the next two years. The 25,000 of us who visited the 53-year-old stadium one last time are more than grateful for the opportunity.

"8th wonder of the world" and some mo' fos want to tear it down. Many o' memories there. Saw a few sports games, but for me, what I remember most is seeing Alabama and Billy Ray Cyrus at the HLS&R. ...Not to mention my high school team - Langham Creek High School - playing a football game right on that AstroTurf in 2000 right before we headed to district playoffs. 1965-2000

The center is modern, clean, organized and has all the amenities. I came prepared with a clear bag but entry was still a breeze. Security does a great job pointing people in the direction of their seats and ensuring that stairways and hallways remain clear. In terms of food and drink, I was really impressed with the number of options. They have two full service food counters on either side of the arena. While I personally did not get anything, I saw people passing by with nachos and popcorn. If you want something a little more substantial Antones Poboys and Chick-fil-a were both set up for grab and go. They also had lots of alcoholic beverage options from tall boy beers, liquor for cocktails and even a spiked fresh lemonade stand. The arena has a fan shop onsite, some historical displays and a kid coloring zone. The game itself was well played (they won!) and executed from the announcer to the lights and entertainment. Great experience overall.

I tend to forget about this venue as it is sandwiched between NRG Stadium and the Astrodome. NRG Arena is definitely old school (it was built in 1974). It actually reminds me of Burger Center in Austin which was also built in the 70s (IYKYK). The capacity is 8K, but it seemed smaller to me. Because it's an older venue, it doesn't have features such as illuminated stairs (like Toyota Center). People were using their cell phone flash lights to go up and down the stairs in the dark. The concourse area is a bit on the small side. The bathrooms weren't great but they weren't a complete disaster. On my last visit, I attended the World AIDS Day concert with Janet Jackson (she was amazing!). The staff was helpful with finding our seats as well as the merch table. We had a row of just 3 chairs which meant we had the entire row to ourselves (my best friend is brilliant lol). The sound quality was better than I was expecting, though at one point the volume of Janet's vocals seemed off. I didn't buy any food or drinks, but I imagine it's overpriced like any other venue. Tip: Check their socials for info on parking, bag policy, etc. Parking for the show was $20 (though it varies by event) and they do take cash and credit. The parking lot is right next to the arena so you don't have to walk terribly far. NRG Arena is okay. It's definitely not my favorite venue in the city, but it's good enough.

I have been to rodeos prior in Fort Worth, but definitely on a much smaller scale. Overall, we had a great experience and I would recommend the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, albeit with some pre-planning as it was a bit difficult to navigate. When we initially arrived via Uber, we were dropped off at the rideshare drop off/pick up area, and it was a little walk to the stadium, where we were able to pretty quickly and seamlessly go through security and make our way into the grounds. Once inside, we did have some trouble navigating where/what we were going to since we are new to the event, but we were able to find our way to the livestock show after some trial and error. Once in the stadium, we immediately decided to grab some drinks before we found our seats. Unfortunately our experience was not the best, and when we ordered drinks we felt disregarded and the staff member helping us was rude and short with us. After we received our drinks, we were making our way to our seats and the $14 Mr Pibbs were completely flat, but we were anxious to go back after our experience with the staff. However, the staff who directed us to our seats were amazing! Not only were they super helpful, but after the concert they took photos for me and my best friend which was so kind and I will cherish forever, since we live states away from each other and rarely get photos together. The livestock show and rodeo was so fun and interactive, and we had the best time watching all of the events and hearing the commentary. The concert was also awesome, and the setup was perfect for all angles to enjoy seeing the act. We saw the Red Clay Strays and it was such an amazing experience. Afterwards, we made our way to the carnival just for some after concert snacks and to see the ambiance, and it was great! We grabbed some esquites and there was plentiful seating to people watch and enjoy the carnival energy. Afterwards however, we weren't able to order our Uber to the same drop off zone for some reason, so we were hesitant but had to order to a sushi restaurant a short walk nearby. It was definitely scary walking as two girls over there, and we did our best to stick around other rodeo-goers, but the shady taxi drivers and men carrying phones flashing their driver options were very insistent and invasive of us, heckling us with constant questions after we politely declined. One driver even circled us blasting music, and it was nerve-wracking since we aren't from Houston and are young women. I would hope that in the future these "drivers" can be deterred from the area or the rideshare zone can be better advertised or organized to prevent instances like these. Otherwise, we did make it out safely and in the future will be better prepared to get in and out of the rodeo!

It is a self paced museum and there are several staff throughout which help you with various installations & how to position for the best photo op. They even have stools for the little ones. The exhibit is fun for all ages which is nice when you have kids at various ages & definitely enjoyable for adults! Our favorite were astronaut picture mirror illusion, spinning tunnel & life size 3D pin art impression wall. There are a lot of fun photo ops in an upside space shuttle room and when you flip the picture upside, it creates a cool effect. There are a lot of cool things we also picked up in the gift shop at the end. I highly recommend this museum for families! My kids were already wanting to go back as we were leaving!
