I pulled up and I was shocked at how"country" it felt. Several older gentlemen sat outside enjoying the ca-phe sua da and throwing du-ma every other word. It felt like my childhood. I pulled at the door and entered and I was back in my childhood. It felt like New Orleans in 1980s. The setup, the whole atmosphere. I didn't have the energy or the time to do my standard questions. I'm very certain these fine folks were Katrina leftovers who never returned home. The banh bao standard is very good. There xiu mai version was kinda weird, but it was only because I am not a fan of xiu mai. The banh bot loc sent me all the back to my childhood. The recipe was old school. Everyone was so friendly and eager to answer any questions I had. The next time I return to the area, I will try their large variety of banh mi. If they are from New Orleans, it will be great. Fresh and tasty. They disclose everything in the sandwich and can make it the way you like it! Many of the Banh mi sandwich places put Maggi/Knorr seasoning on it (which contains MSG). Here, you can specify if you do not want it on your sandwich. We had the Thit nuong (BBQ pork) and xiu mai (pork meatball) sandwiches and shared a custard bun for dinner: they were all delicious. This place is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant near veterans and bammel. Had it not been for Yelp, I would've never noticed this place. I especially was enticed by how cheap their prices are. I'm usually a really big banh mi fan but these were really mild in flavor. I usually prefer the carrots be pickled and these weren't. They also weren't as stuffed as i normally like them to be. I got the grilled pork and it was a little bland. The 1 thing that kind of threw me off is that they had spring rolls pre-made with shrimp and pork, pre-packaged and sitting in an unrefrigerated area. I know that the rice-paper gets hard when it gets cold but shrimp and pork need to be kept cool. I was pretty off-putt by that. read more

I've been here a few times and wanted to wait until I was able to try a few more of their products before writing a review. Houston Banh Bao has only been opened for a week, and they are still adding more products to their store. I have tried out their sandwiches, baos, jellos, French bread, and cha lua (Vietnamese pork roll). The Vietnamese sandwiches are delicious because the bread is soft and crunchy at the same time. It's not the hard sandwiches that you may get at other stores. I had the special sandwich which comes with pork and shredded chicken. The meats and veggies are fresh. It's a perfect snack, to-go lunch, or dinner. I ate the entire sandwich there and took a few to-go for Monday's lunch. For the baos, I've had the custard and meat ones. The custard baos are not overly sweet and is good for breakfast. The meat ones are really hearty and fills me up for a few hours. What's good about the baos is that you can freeze them if you stock up! Just reheat for about 30-45 seconds, and you're set! Overall, I really love HBB and will be coming back for more sandwiches, baos, and their breads! read more

I've been here a few times, I'm here mostly for the salted egg bao and custard bao. I've tried their grilled pork banh mi, nothing special, it's precooked and heated up in the microwave. Their spring roll is good, comes in a pack of three but never enough sauce. You only get half of the usual amount of the sauce for the spring rolls compared to elsewhere, and if you want more sauce, they'll charge you extra for it. Their cafe sua da isn't that great either. The taro flavor was really good and at 86 cents, can't beat that! The BBQ pork flavor was good too except the stuffing was a bit lacking. They could put in more to fill it out and have a better ratio of stuffing to dough. The dough was so good even my brother's cat ate it and it is a picky eater. I finally stepped in here for the first time today, but I've eaten from this place two times before. My friend and I looked on Yelp and decided to check this place out, but we missed the sign and figured that we would just come back another day. Two months later, my dad came back from work with a bunch of meat and egg custard buns. Since I was going meatless then, I ate the egg custard bun. Mom noticed that I was devouring them, so she asked dad to go back and get more. I never questioned where those delicious banh baos came from until I saw the taro one. It triggered a flashback to this Yelp page, and I had to ask them if it was this place. So... Upon entering the first thing I noticed is how clean it is... the gentleman behind the counter was very sweet... we had a small language barrier but he pulled out a menu and we started pointing away... easy peasy! Wow, i have to say i did not expect this place to be this good and cheap. First off , you can tell by their set up that they are well organized and clean. Their buns are phenomenal, very moist, fluffy and authentic. These are the best in north houston hands down. Their banh mi was also good, might give vina bakery across the street a run for their money. Pate sol was on another level here, way better than the ones i remembered when i was a kid. Fantastic little restaurant. I went here for lunch and had the BBQ pork bahn and an egg custard bao. Prices were spot on with any other good bahn restaurant. The pork was delicious and not too fatty like others I have had. It could have used a little more jalapeño but I prefer spicier food than others. The bao was a delightful end to a delicious meal. As a fellow Vietnamese, this place is AMAZING. They hand make EVERYTHING and it is FRESH. We ordered the Pork and Salted Egg Banh baos. This bao is the softest and most moist bao ever. Majority of the time in other places, the bread is extremely dry and hard to swallow. I usually end up picking off the bread and eating just the meat. That isn't the case here. I'll eat the ENTIRE thing and won't have a problem with it. We also ordered the combo banh mi and took some home. As before, the bread is beautiful. It's crunchy, crispy, and not dry. No part of it were to be ripped off and they put a beautiful amount of mayo and pate. For lunch, I ordered Bun Rieu and that was amazing as well. I usually don't finish my noodles, but I just slurped everything up. Boyfriend is usually picky with his banh mi and he just ate the entire thing! We'll frequent this place next time we're in town! Excited to come back. My dad frequents this place and always gets the Pate so, it ran out this time and he was super sad about this place. My dad is barely a regular customer anywhere. I was driving around the area and was looking for something new to try on Yelp. Came across this place and I thought "I've heard of Bao" before so I thought I'd try it. I wasn't impressed by this location. I walked in and the person just stared at me, so I asked if I sit down, or just order with her, to which she asked "What you order?" I ordered the pork and duck egg and barbeque pork Bao. They have a ton of them already made made and wrapped in clear wrap. She grabbed two of them, put them in a basket, and popped them in the microwave for 30 seconds. Let me say that again. She put them in a MICROWAVE. I don't think microwaves should be used for anything in restaurants period. The Bao themselves weren't anything to wrote home about. Small amount of filling, and lots of dough. Like Christina (first tip) said, they're still in their very, very early stages of business so their shelves are pretty empty by midday (which is when I came) and their building isn't all spruced up yet. That said, it's a good thing. Another business I know of is always stocked, but because of the little traffic things go bad and won't taste as fresh. It's a smart tactic. Now for the details: Customer service: I actually had a really pleasant experience. The guy at the register was really nice and the older woman made sure to get us what we wanted how we wanted, and both of them were very helpful and willing to answer questions and explain their foods. That said, we are a Vietnamese speaking family so the communications were easy enough. I'm not sure if they both speak English, but I think they do. Sanitation: I made sure to watch for anything that would have the possibility of killing me (business stated above literally almost killed me), and they are very sanitary. Foods: The bánh bao dac biet is so good. So, so good. The quail egg on the inside was perfectly cooked and not dry, plus the inner ball of meat was seasoned well and was delectable. This is coming from someone who usually eats the bun and leaves the inner ball of meat about 90% of the time! But even better--EVEN BETTER--is the bánh mì dac biet. It's AMAZING. Please do yourself a favor and get it. So many of the shops I usually frequent for bánh mì has been falling apart in terms of quality and service, so taking a bite out of this bánh mì almost made me cry. The meat is perfect, the vegetables are fresh, and my tummy is happy. This is why I say that their limited stock (which I'm sure they replenish as they run out throughout the day) is a good idea. Since they're new, if they leave a ton of meats out it's going to get rank pretty quickly. But anyways, just please give their bánh mì a try. Definitely going to be my place to go buy 21 loaves to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the week. I've been waiting to try out Houston Banh Bao for a while now and finally had an opportunity to stop by. First of all, the moment I walked in, I noticed it was very clean! Everyone was extremely nice and helpful as I needed some guidance as far as what to try. The great thing is their menu is also in Vietnamese and English! My husband both got dac biet sandwiches which I believe is their specialty banh mi. Let me just say that the baguettes are amazing. The sweet owners told me they are baked fresh daily!! The chicken and pork filling was well flavored and the pickled vegetables were fresh and a nice complement to the meat. I will certainly be back for more sandwiches and a ton of baguettes for the week! Next time I will also be trying their baos and coffees!
