I'll start by saying Liz E.'s review was spot on. It was my first visit since they had made me angry several years ago. What was more infuriating is I wasn't shopping for myself, but my HOA. They have a bigger budget for this kind of thing than I do. I needed about 30 plants, half of them shrubs. Laughingly, I took one of the handy carts and located most of the shrubs about as far away from a cashier as you can get. Fortunately, it was downhill. That cart only held 4 shrubs. So I took them uphill to the main building and asked if I could get help with the rest. We each grabbed carts, and he eventually figured out it was going to be slow going. So he told me he would go get the BIG cart and left with the cart he had brought, empty. Twenty minutes later, I find him at a cash register, hoping someone would hurry and check out. It took him a second to register who I was, and then he explained how he could not leave the register. So *I* walked out to the street and got one of the big carts. The kind they probably use at rodeos or something to haul off dead livestock. So I got that loaded up along with the other standard cart. An employee in the next aisle who was arranging things told me I needed to ask the cashier if I wanted help. It was obvious that anyone under these circumstances could benefit from assistance, especially if they were as old as I am. I'm pretty old. Someone did finally go to get the loaded Carcass Cart and brought it to the cashier with my other carts. All in all, over $500. I may have gotten a price break, or that was the hint, anyway. Still not enough for anyone to volunteer to help me to my truck with the stuff. I think my second trip for another cart shamed them, and someone brought down the big cart. I think there is a good variety of plants there. It's a damned shame no one there knows where they are. read more

This place needs improvement. I am looking for plants and I can see HGC has lots of inventory when driving by. I tried to call them and the phone numbers go straight to VM. I attempted to call several of the listed numbers and ended up calling the corporate office. The corporate number was the only number that someone answered. I asked about the phone going to VM and I was told they all go to vM. I then asked about inventory and was told that the corporate office has no access to inventory list. This is horrible customer service. Why should a customer have to drive to a location to check availability ? Why does the corporate office not know what the stores are stocking? What a poorly run operation! I will go elsewhere and buy from someone who actually communicates with customers. read more

this Review is long overdue. For many years, I have purchased plants at various locations of the Houston Garden Center. I often stop by the one located near the intersection of the Sam Houston tollway. I frequent this location as well as the location on 610 and Fournace. First and foremost, the pricing has become absurd. And the plant quality has decreased. this is a general comment for all locations. I've visited in recent times. plant quality has always been questionable at times. But with the prices, the way they are you would hope they would maintain their plants. Today, I am compelled to provide this review based on the the attitude of a single employee. There were two clerks at the front of the store both young women. One brunette and one blonde. When I approached the brunette and advised that I did not see pricing for the macho ferns she looked up at me momentarily, I repeated that I'd like to have a price on the macho ferns, and she looked back down at her phone and ignored me. I turned and looked at the other clerk, and as you can imagine, we were both amazed at the rudeness of this clerk. The brunette Continued to look at her phone. The young blonde lady went to the back of the store and searched out the pricing for me. She also helped me bring one of the large macho plants to the front. It makes me sad to spend my hard earned money with a retailer who hires such poor staff, charges a ridiculous amount of money for marginal plants and doesn't ensure pricing is placed properly on items. The one star review is for this young lady, the lack of pricing on several things I picked up to look at, one being edging, another being a flower pot. Would leave 0 stars if possible. Absolute WORST customer service of ANY retail operation we have EVER encountered in Houston. Bought 2 dozen poinsettias that "looked OK" inside the clear plastic wrapping, but when we asked the cashier if the plants had already been sufficiently watered or if we should water them when we got them home, he replied (quote): "We don't know anything about the plants here so I can't help you". He was polite, but it was surprising that this company provides ZERO knowledge or even minimal training to their employees about the products they are selling. When we got the plants home & unwrapped them they were an absolute DISASTER. The interiors of ALL the plants were FILLED with dead leaves & broken stems & after all the dead leaves & debris had been removed the plants were only 1/2 the size they appeared in the plastic wrapping. HORRIBLE quality. We took the 3 worst plants back to the location with our receipt from 2 days earlier, but when we asked about exchange, replacement or refund the cashier merely pointed to a SMALL sign by 1 register which read: "NO refunds, exchanges or rain checks". No verbal comment, just a finger pointing at the sign. When we asked to speak to a manager the cashier pointed to a guy outside who was engaged on his phone in what sounded like a personal call since he was laughing & we could hear music & he did not acknowledge us even though we stood waiting. He finally covered the phone but did not hang up, & asked: "Do you want to talk to me"? We told him about the plants & he replied (quote): "Didn't the cashier show you the sign by the register"? When we said we had seen the sign on this visit he replied: "That is your answer" & he returned to his personal phone call. To encounter this level of abject incompetence & total disregard of ANY hint of customer concern is definitely shocking. Especially when one hears almost daily about retailers complaining about the loss of business to online sales, but this is the reality of Houston Garden Center. To say we would NEVER - EVER return to this retailer would be an understatement, so be aware of the negative reviews about the total & non-existent customer service at this business. read more

I came to this Houston Garden Center location after another location didn't have the plants we wanted. Upon arriving, I asked a gentleman in the little booth near the exit about the plants I was in search of. (They're called a Persian Shield and they are the most beautiful deep purple color). The man walked me right over to them! They had some in stock!!! Hallelujah! So happy. I ended up getting some colorful flowers for our landscape too. Price wasn't terrible. Only complaint is that literally a week after we bought all these plants, EVERYTHING went on sale for 30% off. Go figure. read more

This place have a lot of choices except gaillardia. We have a project in our front lawn, we asked help and they just pointed us somewhere... and purchase 10 different sizes gallons. When we got the receipt it does not look like the one we wanted because there was no guidance and when i was asking the cashier he said he does not know because he is just a cashier.... So it upsets me that there was no effort on their part to help customer.... They said they were busy because of delivery and they are watering plants. After paying nobody offered can we help u with the purchase to the car. Since we were looking for gailardia i called cornelius and from the time we step in they greeted goodmorning i ask about the plant they help me locate it with kind gesture.. they seem content with there work and very friendly too. They provided us with a box to prevent dirt get in the car... houston gardens need to follow lead about helping customers find what they need. You have an opportunity to improve your service... in cornelius even if they are watering the plants they stop to help a customer and they are happy to do so. Might be managemnt, might be income but you do have a room for a lot of improvement. I would not be able to give Houston Garden Center even one star. After being cheated when the cashier added plants that I did not have in my cart. The manager of the store refused a refund. English is not a language that is spoken by the employees when there is a problem. No sabe. I thought the 1.5 star rating was an exaggeration until I went here for myself and... wow. The "manager" was rude and irate for no reason after I pointed out that they had the wrong signage in front of the plant(s) I was purchasing. I had them double check price/sign and they said the wrong sign was there. Most stores will honor price when the wrong price is listed but the manager became extremely rude and angry out of nowhere. Do not buy your Christmas tree here. I am very disappointed in the Christmas tree we bought from Houston Garden Centers (specifically the Tomball location). We spent about $200 on a tree and other items. We paid for them to cut the tree and bought their extra life extender and the tree is falling apart after a week. One touch if a branch and nearly all the needles fall off. The ornaments are falling off because the needles can't hold them on. We have only had this tree ONE WEEK. I tried to call multiple times and every time the voicemail was full. Very frustrating. read more

Houston Garden Center's business motto is to be located everywhere so they're convenient for everyone to drop by! I literally see them everywhere off the sides of the highway, and the awning is hard to miss. They always advertise some good sales on their signs and if you check their website, there's usually more sales listed online. They're impressive end of the season sale usually marks everything down to 50% or more! This is when everyone usually stocks up on plants to resell next season. We know cause we've purchased elsewhere with the Houston Garden Center sticker still on the pot! They literally buy this place out so nobody can find them at any location. Anyways, the selection of plants here is good. Not always the cheapest and not always the healthiest plants, but they work and are alive. We've gotten some trees, vines and flowers here. Even some herbs last season that stayed alive through the winter and continued to grow into next season. The staff will do the bare minimal, can't say they are helpful or friendly. What gave me a bad taste in my mouth was when I went in today because their ads advertised 1/2 odd ceramic pots. I got a few at another location the day before and wanted 1 more for a plant I bought today. I showed the lady the ad, she went back to ask the manager, and they didn't honor the price! She said the ad was wrong. Wth?! It clearly said 1/2 off all ceramic pots and urns! All shapes, sizes and color - excludes clay. What part of that was wrong?! It was fairly clear to me! Pretty shady business motto, unhelpful, and not honorable. I get the employees can't do anything about it cause they just work there and this is an upper management issue. But doubt they care cause they obviously have a 1.5 star rating for a reason. Probably won't change much since they get just as much business for convenience but thought I'd share my experience here. Horrible Corporate policy would not let me return 2 bags of fertilizer. I meant to buy winterizer. Within one hour I tried to return the fertilizer and they would not let me return or exchange the fertilize. Called corporate office and they said absolutely not exchange or refund. I bet when the owner buys the wrong product at Dillards, she would be upset if they did not work with her on a return. I'm not sure why this place has so low rating. We stopped by to find a specific plant and at least the place is pretty big for a nursery, so it was nice walking around. They also had half off everything, I didn't notice the prices of the plants though. We didn't find the specific plant we were looking for and asked the staff and they said they don't have it which seemed bad because it was a common plant but still not available in a big nursery. Anyways, if I get something next time from this place, I might have to review again for now I feel a rating of 3 sounds more neutral to me. read more

I had the worst experience ever at the Houston Garden Center. I went there to exchange a ceramic pot that I had bought two days ago due to lack of space and exchange for a slightly smaller size one and I stood there roaming around for almost two hours without being helped tossed from one person to another person and finally the manager spoke to me which by the way was very rude and grumpy and told us to talk to the owner. We even agreed to buy more plants to pay for the difference which by the way was only from $25 to $20, but the manager adamantly refused. I think the key to running a good business is good customer service. If your managers and your people on phone can't keep customers happy, you ought to close down. If the owner happens to read this, please respond, because I made a failed attempt to call you and spoke to a very rude lady who was nothing but lacks manners. You need friendly people at desk handling customers. This is just a friendly advice. I was told I had to go inside the store to get the price. That is extremely inconvenient, to waste time and gas for information that should be easily communicated by phone. The planters and potts you find in this nurseries are three times more expensive than those that you can find in Lowe's. They are made of plastic and are very bad quality. The people in charge of the store #7 (525 West Grand Parkway South, Katy Tx, 77494) are rude, specially Mr. Roman. He was aggressive, and so we're the two women working as cashiers. If you call to the number they provide to leave your comments and ask about what to do, you get the same rude attitude. Stopped by after going to Home Depot next door. Parking was easy and seemed safe. The outside flowers looked so inviting and colorful! I have been looking for a new hibiscus tree for my house. They had many options, braided trunks, non braided trunks, short hibiscus', tall, full, small. They also had Tri colored hibiscuses and single colored. Basically any hibiscus you can think of they have. I walked around looking for the perfect sized one for me. Found it, no bugs or issues with it. It looked healthy and big. The price was normal. Service was awful! I ask the manager Luis at I-10 and the beltway about some cannas that had been 1/2 off the previous week that looked slightly damaged. He told me they were never half off and that I was wrong. I explained to him that I was there and saw them and there was an ad online. I didn't expect that they'd still be on sale but wondered if they had any remaining damaged cannas. I proceeded to purchase 4 full priced plants....no problem. He continue to deny that there had in fact been cannas on sale the previous week. Basically, he was calling me a liar. Please don't disrespectfully argue with your customers. I love HGC but I went to the new one off of I45 and Holzworth last week and it was the worst experience. Little help in the store and they could not speak English. I bought some dirt and took the ticket out to be loaded. I waited for over 10 minutes, even honking my horn a few times to get someone's attention. No one came and I had to load the dirt myself. There were 1 or 2 customers in the whole place, so it wasn't because they were busy. Will not be back to that location for a while. read more

I went to HGC last year to purchase a few palm trees. The salesman asked me to go out and bring the tag on the trees in to him. Apparently I grabbed the wrong tags and he thought it was so hilarious that he started yelling my mistake out to his co-workers. I could smell alcohol on him and it was noon. Anyway, fast forward to today. I needed to replace a tree I had bought there that died in the freeze so I went back and asked the cashier if he could look it up so I could match it. His response was "we don't keep no records like that here". So I went out and found a tree that I liked however I did have a few questions. So I went in and finally found someone to come out to the tree with me. As I was asking the question he just grabbed the tag off and quickly walked inside. I thought it was because his English was very poor, so maybe he couldn't understand me but I followed him in asked him about planting it and asked when my landscaper could come. He felt very annoyed and agitated that I asked him these questions (this was a $550 tree) and then began to be downright rude. I asked to see the manger and he replied "I am the manager". I walked out and went to another nursery (The Ground Up, nearby) where the customer service was VERY friendly (the same tree was $170) and when I told the manager there what I had experienced there he said "oh, it's not you, I hear this all the time"! I have spent $1000's there but I am now taking my business elsewhere and I have told my landscaper not to patronize HGC anymore either. read more

The plants die within 24 hours of buying them. I bought an expensive plant for a gift, and the next morning, the blooms had withered. I took it back for an exchange and they refused to take any responsibility for selling sick plants. They didn't care that it died in less than 12 hours. That's why they have low ratings. read more

I went in to return or exchange it completely unused and they said no. That's a terrible business policy, esp when it was their mistake by selling me the wrong product. I just returned from Houston Garden Center on 610 Loop near Westpark and the worst customer service. I needed some help and asked the 4 cashiers and just got blank looks. I addressed one guy who just stared at me with no attempt to respond. Finally a lady overheard and volunteered to help. Upon check out, I just got the same glares from the cash register staff. You all need to hire more people that speak English and act like they want a job. There are other nurseries, albeit not as convenient, but will provide better service. read more

Bought some plants here back in October 2022 on the behalf of my seller client. I got 4 8 inch mums, aloe Vera, red sisters, 4 small plants. Within less than 2 months, all 4 mums and the 4 small plants died!!!! Note that I followed instructions to water them and everything. What a ripoff!!!! Reported them to the BBB last week. The total loss is about $60. Stay the heck away from this place. Please go to other places for plants. read more

Every year I go to Houston Garden center in the Spring to get annuals and every year after my visit my credit card number gets stolen

I have always shopped at Houston Gardenland on East Sam Houston Pky with address of Pasadena and have been always satisfied. However on the morning of Nov.6 ,2023 I was replacing 4 azaleas for my front garden. TV and all paper advertisements since end of summer has said half price sale. My 4 azaleas which was supposed to be half off was not honored after I showed the clerk their advertisements that definitely listed azaleas.
