I think I initially came here when they first opened circa 2012 or 2013 with my bff and we both had the same thought in mind that the beers were unimpressive and ridiculously overpriced. But I never left a review because it was a one and done and not a full experience. I came back this weekend. Honestly, it was because we were seeing a movie at the Film Forum across the street and I was looking to see what was nearby and this popped up advertising happy hour on a Sunday. What more could I ask for? Anyway, be wary that happy hour runs until 8pm (which signs on the wall said 9pm so that was confusing) and when it becomes 7:30pm they do last call. Meaning the bar actually is closing and does in fact close at 8pm on a Sunday. They will go to such extreme lengths as to have security escort you out even if you haven't finished your drinks at 7:50-7:55pm. If the above wasn't what it was and they actually let people finish their drinks that they ordered from 'last call' then maybe I would consider boosting this to 4 stars. Admittedly, $10 for a cocktail during happy hour is pretty good. I didn't spring for the beer because $9 during happy hour is criminal. But then I'm pretty sure I paid between $8-10 for a beer when they first opened so I'm not surprised it just kept going up with inflation. Anyway, beers are actually made by Greenpoint Brewery. Which they have a very good Duck Porter which wasn't on tap. It's also I guess affiliated with the old Heartland Brewery, rip. The cocktails were a-okay. They're all made with Fever Tree mixes. I had ordered an espresso martini and a lemon drop which I had to down like an alcoholic. I tried my boyfriend's moscow mule and again, okay & decent. His mom came and she ordered a Guinness, not realizing it's in a can and she ordered the $10 sliders trio. Cheese is extra, god forbid. And the sliders are the tiniest I have ever seen in my life. Think and envision this: Take a martin's potato roll, smash it down, and divide that into 4ths and a regular hamburger and divide that into 4ths and serve 3 of the 4ths. It wasn't even on an actual slider roll. It was literally little tiny cut up pieces and shreds of roll. After seeing this I joked wondering how tiny is the size of the personal pizza. Is it a bagel bite? Or the size of a taco shell? One may never know. Structurally, this place is kind of neat. Its an older building from 1907 with original architecture and you get the feeling that they maybe stored horses in here once upon a time. Or at least perhaps before the FBI took over the building. read more

I have been here several times...sometimes, several time in the same week. I work right across the street from the bar for the last 10 years so, I have been a mainstay. I know most of the bartenders and waitresses and most of them are friendly. The bar has a lot of happy hour specials and it is very big. They have trivia days along with the games streaming, and board games available. The bar is HUGE. It has a lot of wooden tables with benches with no padding or backing. The bars have seats as well. However, if you do not drink do not bother coming here. The food is terrible. They redid the menu and it's still lacking. If you are drunk enough you might be convinced to have a bite or two, and then you would re-think your decision. We had several office happy hours and it's the only place where most of the food is still remaining and no one wants the leftovers. Fun place though for drinking vibes. read more

Looking for a large beer hall in Manhattan with beers under $10? Granted that's during happy hour but otherwise, look no further! Houston Hall has been one of my haunts since I moved to NYC eons again and although I might not frequent as often as I did, I know it's a solid space for beers and sports especially during questionable weather. I really don't have any negative things to say about Houston Hall. Although the space is huge it can get crowded pretty fast especially on big game days. They have at least 2 huge screens to watch stuff on. Some waiter service but when it's busy you're better off going up and ordering things yourself. Food is typical beer hall food - salty, unhealthy, delicious. Giant Bavarian pretzels, bratwurst bites, nachos, you've got it. There are menus on the tables but no service, asked one of the guys walking around if we could order food, drinks then he snatched the menu from us. Very confused??? I love this place! I've walked past it several times but hadn't gone in til yesterday. We went to watch a wildcard NFL playoff game and there was a good amount of people, but it wasn't crowded at all since the place is so big. They have a variety of games, food, and drinks. Love to see it! I was pleasantly surprised by the pulled pork sliders and I loved the pretzel. The happy hour is lengthy and the deals are good. The DJ was playing hit after hit. As others have said, Houston Hall is an elite/iconic sports bar in the West Village. Vibes are great, seating is extremely uncomfortable, food is nothing special. However, if you do order food, order from the happy hour menu, and keep in mind that the empanadas are much better than the sliders. Damn 3.4 stars wtf is wrong with y'all!? This is an ELITE place to come and watch a game. We came here to watch the USC vs Washington game in what was an absolute SHOOTOUT. They had 4 different college football games on 4 different projectors, fans of each watching the screen that their team is playing on. My big bro even started rooting for Michigan because he saw a couple cute girls in Michigan gear. "Wow, your offense looks good!... What year did y'all graduate tho??..." Next thing I know he's in the middle of their long picnic table making them all laugh smh. I just came to watch a game...... I love Houston Hall because there are tons of people but there is still AMPLE space, as its prior use was for horse stables and carriages. This amount of room is an absolute luxury in New York. It really reminds me of being in Texas watching a game. Shoutout to Texas Live one time. They have the big boy Steins of beer that will at least last you a full half, unless you're a BEAST! One of my other big bros was getting the medium sized beers though and we were on his head for it, he might be downgraded to lil cuzzo after this. USC ended up losing the shootout, and my boy Caleb Williams ended up crying in his Mom's arms in the stands and getting clowned for it. I feel him though. Saturday 7pm Though I'm not a big beer Person, I went with the flow and came here with the group of friends who are much younger than me ( early 30's). The space is huge with high ceilings , brick wall , pretty cool actually ! The crowd is as expected given the location and type of establishment is pretty young . They wouldn't turn down the music after multiple requests, the DJ played terrible music way too loud and you couldn't hear yourself think. Refused to adjust volume and multiple groups left. If you're young, fun loving and don't mind screaming at the top of your lungs in order to be heard, this is definitely the place to be! This has got to be the single largest "Bar-in-a-Warehouse" (yes, I spelled the latter correctly) in all of Nee York City. This place has ancient brick walls all around (hence the awful acoustics), and probably 20 foot commercial ceilings --painted black, naturally. All of the seating is on long, wooden picnic tables, the same tables that you would find in a public park. That means contorting your body to squeeze into the immobile wooden benches ... with "no backs" on any of them. The menu is definitely "Dive Bar" level, and the service was anything but attentive. But the IPA I ordered was cold, and the Happy Hour Sliders and assorted Empanadas were tasty, filling ... and reasonably priced, for NYC. I was there with an old septuagenarian bball buddy, to watch the Knicks Playoff game on one of the three giant screens, which are positioned way up high on the wall, for everyone to see. Anyway, we had a few laughs, and we elected to leave at halftime. Next time, I will probably try to sit at the bar. read more

Just a short review as I only had one drink here. I went here the day the Olympics started (I remember the Parade of Nations on the massive TV.) As I was only in the mood for one drink and I wasn't planning on staying late, I had one cocktail. I went with the "Black rox Manhattan" as I like odd Manhattans and I like Amaros, an Italian digestif which ranges from the well known Aperol, Campari, and Vermouth to lesser known ones. This cocktail consisted of Maker's Mark Bourbon, Italian Black Amaro, and bitters. I don't know which Amaro they used as there are a bunch of Italian black Amaro but by the flavor, i assume it's Averna (as there was a light anise kick.) It could have been Fernet or others but I am unsure/I digress. Unsure of the bitters also but most places like this don't list them. As it was a Manhattan, it was definitely spirit focused and quite strong but the Amaro added a refreshing bitter aftertaste. It was in short quite balanced as far as Manhattans go. This was a surprisingly good cocktail for a massive beer pub and it was better than the riffs on Manhattans found at some fancy steakhouses. Color me impressed regardless of the expected high price. This was a great cocktail with an otherwise alright beer menu with an overpriced food menu which no one indulged in as we were full from earlier. Nice enough service with the bartenders making the drinks fast for the large number of people here. 4.1. I would have given it higher for the cocktail but the rest of the menu is too much of a sticker shock. read more

At a birthday celebration in Houston Hall, my male friend was denied entry to the men's restroom by an employee and a patron on the basis that he is gay. They purposefully said "This is the MEN'S bathroom". In a second attempt, he was physically pushed out of the bathroom by these same men. This type of discrimination is beyond appalling in this day and age, and even more so in NYC. I hope management does not support this Neanderthal-like behavior, but regardless if they do or not, it still happened in their establishment. read more

Good place to watch a game with a group. The hall use to be the stables for horse and carriages back in the day. It is a huge place with long picnic tables great for a large group. This review is for a private event! I had the privilege to be invited to an NYRR party (they organize the NYC marathon). Houston Hall is a very cool, industrial type of location - I think of Brooklyn Steel-esque. It has high ceilings and makes you feel like you're in a converted former factory. Food was catered- house Caesar salad, mashed potatoes, roasted chicken, ribs, roasted root vegetables. I had the salad, chicken, and ribs. Good for what it was! It looked like they have an interesting selection of cocktails (did not have any, but menu included for reference). The staff were attentive and friendly.
