Houston Hospice - Diamond Team, lasted a week before I had to fire them and find another hospice that could provide end of life care for my mother. To begin, their intake nurses are rough, belligerent and detached. The lady we got could care less about my mother, she just wanted to do the minimum and get out. Not a single commitment was upheld, not one. We called for support and help four times in the first week and the average time to hear back from someone was two hours, then another two hours for a nurse to arrive. So if you have an emergency, just call the ambulance and have the hospital take care of it, it's faster, and your loved one will suffer less. Now, as a result of me firing them, they became hostile, threatened to make me pay for equipment they left behind and failed to retrieve. They never took into consideration that my mom had died and their employees, having missed the appointment to pick up the equipment, lied and said a dead woman was preventing them from getting it. We choose to go with another company who was hands down better suited for caring for end of life patients. Houston Hospice is a money game, you are a dollar sign, if you are cool with that, then use them. read more

Complete bait-and-switch. The admissions representative sold us on services and timing that simply did not happen. When my mother was discharged home, we were told her equipment would be delivered the day before discharge. That did not happen. We were also told a hospice nurse would be at the house waiting to assess her when she arrived home. That also did not happen. I had to call multiple times just to find out where the equipment was and when a nurse would arrive. We then learned she had not even been fully admitted yet. It took several days to sort everything out during a very stressful time. One nurse who came out did not appear to know how to use the oxygen equipment. A week into hospice care, we still had not seen a nurse aide and again had to call to ask what was going on. The organization has felt extremely disorganized from the start. Communication between admissions and the clinical team does not appear coordinated, and the promises made to our family were not followed through. Most concerning, the nurse assigned to care for my dying parent has spent significant time on her phone during visits rather than focused on patient care. This has been incredibly disappointing during one of the hardest times for our family. Families considering hospice should ask detailed questions and verify exactly what services will actually be provided and when. read more

Please do not send your loved one here for care!!!!! The staff did not wake or feed my wife for a 5 days. They brought in food one day but left it against the wall four feet away from her bed and she only ate something because I helped her none of the staff did. They only give pain and anxiety and other medicine to my wife and keep her laying flat for the five days and caused her to develop lots of congestion in her chest. I had to tell the doctor she had lots of congestion and the doctor said oh we can give her. a patch to help with that. They told me the do not wake or sit up or feed patients, they just make them comfortable by keeping them medicated so they can't talk. After I saw the care for five days I had to have her brought home so I could care for her. Had a nurse tell me that two different pain meds were the same. The day after my wife got there she could no longer text or call me on the phone much less hold a small styrofoam cup of coffee. They had several nurses but only three patients on the floor all in the same condition. They said the didn't want to set me up for failure, i said I can handle her care better than you and just need a bed. Then they didn't even come back in the room to tell me it was being delivered that day. We got her home and within a day or two had her awake and talking and fighting the congestion they caused and stole a week or more of my time that I could talk with her due to laying her flat for a 5 days and not feeding or giving her anything to drink. My wife was a nurse for 23 years and worked in LTAC ( long term acute care) units. She took care of 8 or 9 or even more patients that were on ventilator and bed ridden. She also worked in the ICU from time to time. Whatever you do don't waste the precious time you have with a loved one by sending them to Houston Hospice they are terrible. read more

This has nothing to do with the care provided within the facility, moreso how my grieving time is now cut short and I'm reporting back to work earlier than expected as a result of this situation. read more

This is the worst hospice! Do not use. They were negligent at every turn, for not scheduling transport when they said they would, the patient was sent home without meds and in extraordinary pain, they could not provide IV or liquid meds even though patient could not swallow and then a night nurse came and we left and they called at 10:30 that night to let us know nurse could not be left alone. This is a horrible horrible, company. I beg you not to use them if you care about your loved one. read more

My father was cared for in this facility before he recently passed. He had a few nurses during his time there but one nurse stood out. Her name was Amy. She was amazing! She took the time out to speak with our family to ensure we were well informed and taken care of. She even memorized all of our names. She went above and beyond of what was expected from her. I'm tired, but my experience went downhill the moment I had the displeasure of meeting nurse Alicia (silver hair). She does not have the right personality to work in hospice - she was patronizing and would become annoyed if I asked what medicines were being given to my mother. Everyone else was lovely. Later on, the main nurse noticed my discomfort and asked what was wrong. It took me a moment to finally share that Alicia made me uncomfortable and I no longer wanted her to attend us. There was another incident where my mother was denied morphine an entire night when she had already been started on a morphine regime days prior to being admitted here -- despite being unable to communicate, she was grimacing and I KNOW my mother was in discomfort. Two nurses appeared to have some miscommunication about this (despite my pleading) and one of them, once again, involved Alicia. It honestly felt a bit malicious since the other nurse was under the impression my mother was already being given morphine. I recorded this incident if anyone ever wants proof. Thanks to all the other wonderful nurses and volunteers that make this space welcoming during a difficult time. read more

Houston Hospice had been a Godsend for our family. The facility has such a peacefulness about it. The nurses and doctors are professional and compassionate. That goes a long way when your loved one is in transition. I know that God sends angels in times of need. He certainly did so for us. There is a young man by the name of Phillip. When I got the news that I would have to transition my mom to hospice I was devastated. I had seen skilled nursing facilities and tried home hospice with my dad before, but didn't know what to expect from an actual hospice facility. I took a tour of Houston Hospice and within five mins I knew this was the right transition place. The rooms are large, the parking was free in the medical center, and the place was quiet and peaceful. My mom had lots of friends and family come and say their last goodbyes with no issue. She only stayed two days, but what a blessing. The hospital would have been too cold to leave this earth. I'm glad we chose this place. I have no regrets. read more

Beautiful, spacious rooms with caring volunteers garnered Houston Hospice a two rating. I wish the staff at the Holcombe facility was as good as the volunteers. The doctor and all except one nurse need additional training to work with families. My dying mom was forced out after the doctor whose purpose was to wean patients from IVs did so. We left for better care after being told repeatedly AFTER arrival that in-patient care is the "ICU of hospice," seeing someone's deceased loved one in the hallway (although there were many empty rooms), and being unsure when nurses were supposed to check in my mom. My family had an overall negative week there. read more

Both of my parents were in hospice but in a different state. I had a good experience with them and I wanted to give back. I went to a Butterfly Luncheon years ago and it tugged at my heart. One never thinks of hospice for children, only for the elderly. Several stories were shared by people that had been a part of this hospice that were so touching and loving. I met so many nurses and doctors that are the angels that work there. I felt like it was a meant to be fit for me to volunteer. I love Houston Hospice and all of the people I work with. I am very disappointed in the service provided to my husband in his last days by Houston Hospice. Everyone showed up to get him in their system and it went down hill from there. All they wanted to do was send more medicine for me to give him. My husband was in their care 7 days in home hospice. On the 7th day he was transported to inpatient hospice once I told them I was taking him back to MD Anderson. They setup transport and my husband passed away as soon as he arrived at their facility, that was 11/3. I have not been contacted by Houston Hospice since my husband death. I don't know what happened to all the support they provide. I contacted them to advise me on what to do with the left over med. that is the last contact I had with them. I am very sorry I put my husband in these people hand during his last days. read more

Before I start my review, I have to make a statement about hospice. We all have spent our entire lives knowing only healing medical care. At the point that medical science can no longer stop your body from failing you, it is time to consider hospice. It will be the most difficult decision you and your family will ever have to make, but once you accept that, the Houston Hospice is the absolute best place for your loved one. It is true that angles still walk the earth, and many of them work and volunteer at Houston Hospice. I have never been exposed to such a high level of service, support, compassion, and care before. Houston Hospice is the only in-patient and "not for profit" hospice in the Houston area. No family ever receives a bill from Houston Hospice, anything not covered by insurance or Medicare is covered by charitable donations. Everyone including the doctors, the nurses, the volunteers, and the administrative staff was patient, compassionate, and supportive of both my brother and me, his only family. They were responsive to all my brother's needs, keeping him pain free, calm and comfortable through his final days. They also constantly inquired about my health and comfort. The rooms are very large, with sleeper sofas and recliners so family and friends can stay with their loved ones. Their volunteers will sit with your loved ones when you have to be away. There is a kitchen on-site that provides family with food at very reasonable prices. There is a snack bar with free coffee and tea 24 hours a day. The facility is more like a resort than a hospital with laundry facilities, family rooms, a very large garden, and chapel. In conclusion, there is no better place that I could have picked for my brother to spend his last days. I highly recommend Houston Hospice to anyone in need of Hospice care. read more

Hospice is supposed to be about compassion and outside of the social worker and the sweet aid that bathed my dad daily, it was terrible. The dr assigned to my dad was probably as old as he was (86) and had no tact or bedside manner whatsoever. The first nurse we had was terrible. The equipment we received broke several times. My mother and I had taken a tour of the facility and it was absolutely beautiful, clean, and the staff was very friendly. So once my father was ready for hospice, we knew that this was where we wanted his final days to be. Although he was only inpatient for one day, he was treated with so much respect and compassion. It's been almost 3 weeks since my father passed away and we've not only received a card from Houston Hospice, they've also signed us up to receive grieving information and informed us that bereavement counseling was available if we needed it. If you ever have to make the gut wrenching decision of putting your loved one in hospice, although I highly recommend Houston Hospice on Holcombe, I STRONGLY recommend you request that Dr. Trinh comes nowhere near your beloved family member. The nursing staff was outstanding and treated us like family.. (of course they were African American.) the only nurse that was horrible to us was a white woman. (Silver bob hair cut) Im just being honest. Dr. Trinh made my time with my mom so much more stressful than it had to be. She is unsympathetic, no compassion whatsoever, greedy, and just downright evil. Within my mothers first hour in her care she tried to cut off my mothers nutrition source and pressured us to do so each day after. My mother still passed away within 9 days of her "care" while on nutrition. There was no need for us to starve our mother to death, when death was still imminent. The only karma that will fit is her standing in my shoes one day. Ive never wished pain and heartache on anyone in my life, but she deserves everything i put in the atmosphere for her, and all the curses the Creator can muster up. Nurse Costance, and all of the aids deserve a gold metal. I will try to get their names. They showed my mom so much love. Dr Trinh should learn from them. read more

So. If you're searching for hospices on Yelp (and I know you are or will, because I did), then someone's life is coming to a close (hopefully not your own), and you're looking to make that end a bit easier. You should move Houston Hospice to the top of your preferred list. Something that people may not mention to you is that a hospice is going to be just as much for you as it is for the person you're moving there. The grounds are pleasant, the rooms are spacious and pleasant, and there's a pretty, free-standing chapel on site. I even think you can bring pets so they too can see their friend, too. The site used to be the home of Oscar Holcombe, a former mayor of Houston. He has a boulevard named for him - it's out front. The historian in the person I moved here (had he known this) would have been as pleased as a five year old who'd managed to sneak off and walk a few blocks from his house to buy a Snoball all by himself. At least that's what I hope he did the second he left the hospice. Either that, or hit the Hubig's factory hard. read more

These are extraordinary people--the Red Team from Houston Hospice offered loving care to my father who just passed hours ago from cancer. Every single person we encountered (on the phone or in our home) projected an air of calm professionalism and gentle handling of our situation. We were never without help, or a line to help, and their advocacy for my father's comfort was genuine and rare. The third party weekend critical care team of Ellen and Bridget could not have been more wonderful, with Ellen in particular choosing to extend to a double 24hr shift so my family would have consistency of care. Chaplin Dan Miller was also quite a comfort to my family-- Should you have need of hospice service in the Houston area, I cannot recommend more strongly utilizing the experience and expertise of these remarkable individuals. read more

It seems strange to write a review for this place but decided it was worth doing. Not a situation with pleasant memories, but the staff as well as the physical building were extremely pleasant. To be able to spend the last days with a loved one here made it bearable and helped us in the moment. If I were needing hospice care I would hope to be in this place or one just like it. read more

Houston Hospice was great at caring for my granny until she passed. I was truly hurt and upset that I was not notified in a timely manner of my grandmother's death. My grandmother died at 10:07 pm but I was not notified until 11:11pm. but the funeral home was notified at 10:25pm. When I asked the nurse why was I not notified at 10:08pm she stated that she thought that the other nurse had called me. My mother was here for less than a day but what I can say about the experience is a positive one. The air there is fresh the rooms are large and comfortable the doctor listed all the facts about what will happen in the near future. Nurse Diane was a Saint she has an amazing energy about her. Houston Hospice provided support and care for my elderly mother while she lived at home with my family over the past two months during her battle with cancer. The nurses and physicians in the Red Team were outstanding. They provided thoughtful advice, compassionate care and were highly responsive and quick to action when we needed it. Requests for medication and medical equipment were provided within 24 hr. They provided pastoral support and a kind volunteer would regularly call and chat with my mother by phone. This is a HORRIBLE facility. My mother was sent here from the hospital, and it was a nightmare trying to get any kind of information out of these people on staff. I was sent in 5 different directions with the staff going round and round on the phone not putting me thru to medical records where I could get records on my mother's stay at this hospice. We had a horrible home hospice experience with Houston Hospice. It was so awful that I discharged my dad from home hospice after 12 hours and took him back to the hospital and had him admitted to the palliative care unit there. Where do I begin? - Reps repeatedly promised things to get our business - like IV antibiotics (if needed), morphine pain pump if patient/family were willing to pay out of pocket (which we were) - but as soon as we got home and spoke with their physician, we were told that was not an option under any circumstance - We got home at 4 pm, and my dad's medicines did not arrive at our home until 6 hours later (10 pm). My dad need morphine every 2 hours round the clock, and I just happened to have backup doses on hand. When our medicine finally did arrive, turns out they'd misspelled our last name - They'd made inappropriate medication substitutions that were contraindicated for the patient (e.g. albuterol for an extremely tachycardic patient) without consulting us - A lot of the fairly standard equipment we'd requested (e.g. bedside commode) were not supplied and we had to make repeated phone calls to ensure delivery - Crisis care LVN was awful - she spilled morphine on my father while trying to administer via feeding tube and shrugged when I asked how much he had gotten. I had to ask her to leave the room because she started arguing in a very loud voice in front of my father, who found it distressing - Admissions nurse (Terri) was beyond awful. When I complained about the crisis care LVN dropping morphine on my dad and about the equipment we'd requested not being there, (both very solvable issues) she launched into a diatribe about what she thought about me and our family dynamics, and that she just wanted to go home, and that in her opinion we didn't want Houston Hospice and threatened to withdraw hospice care from our home (which we had never stated). I had to call their main office and speak with Thomas Moore there to resolve the issues about the crisis care LVN and the equipment. Terri left our home without waiting for the replacement crisis care LVN to arrive - Replacement crisis care LVN was not experienced. While my dad was having horrible symptoms at night, she was using her phone to look up what purpose the medicine was going to serve. She panicked, and deferred completely to the private duty nurse we had in our home. Was also not effective/concise at communicating with the on-call RN via phone - I had to take over the phone call Worst hospice EVER. Sloppy, unprofessional, disorganized, and uncaring. Such a traumatic experience at such a difficult time. I would give them negative stars if I could. read more

I felt compelled to review Houston Hospice. Everyone reviews restaurants, bar scenes and clubs but no one thinks of places that deal with real issues. My grandma spent her last few days here and I have to say, it really was a great place with a wonderful, sympathetic staff. After spending 2 nights with her at St. Joseph's Hospital, we received her test results back and she had pancreatic cancer which was beyond any sort of treatment since it was in severe, later stages and the doctors said that my grandma would not be strong enough to survive any operation since she was 89. And it had spread to her liver and it had caused her kidneys to start deteriorating.. We had her transferred to Houston Hospice on February 11, 2013 and she passed peacefully on February 13, 2013. This facility was really great. The MAJORITY of the staff was very wonderful and helpful in any needs that you may have needed, cots extra pillows etc. And I say majority because we had a brief encounter with a nurse that was helping when they first moved my grandma to her bed. There were 2 nurses helping the EMT guys and one nurse scoffed because my sister was by my grandma's side making sure she was comfortable and apparently she was in her way and the duration of the moving, that one nurse just had a real negative attitude which we DID NOT appreciate. Don't worry, we had a talk with supervisor about her. I mean, if you are going to work in sensitive environment like that and you want to bring your problems to work with you DONT WORK HERE! The people here are already going a tough enough time and your funky negative attitude is DEFINITELY not needed! For this encounter, I deducted a star... They would allow as many people as we wanted in the room and they would let us spend the night with her since we did not want her to be alone whatsoever. We only had to remind the women behind the desk that our trash can was getting a bit full once and we needed a bit more toilet paper because we had like 4 people constantly in my grandmother's room, but they were pretty much on top of the room maintenance. They have a shower and laundry facilities which we really appreciated. The staff helped tremendously and they really helped my grandma with her meds to make sure she was comfortable because that was our main concern. We just wanted her to feel secure with her family by her side. The staff really does not mind that you have all your family in the room or if you bring an overnight bag to stay for a few days (like I did) the parking is free, the parking lot could be a bit more well lit at night but it seemed pretty secure. The place really is beautiful and you feel comforted because you see the other families that are in the same exact situation as you; at a time when you feel alone. We have been meaning to make monetary donations as well as donate laundry detergent and toiletries to donate to this facility (since they have all of their resources SOLELY from donations) because I really was amazed at how wonderful the staff was and how they really did try to make this sad time a bit easier. As I mentioned, my grandma passed away at 1:03p.m on February 13,2013 with her family by her side. My mom, dad niece and nephew were in the room with her when she took her last breaths. I felt so guilty because I was not in the room when she passed but I know she knows that we all love her and will miss her always. read more
