My family's disappointing ten-day experience My mother-in-law transferred into St. Dominic Village's Assisted Living building after their nurse completed an intake assessment and confirmed they could meet her care needs. We paid the prorated first month's rent and a non-refundable $2,000 "community fee." Within seven days the staff told us they could not provide the level of support she needed and asked us to move her out. We accommodated and moved her out only ten days after arrival. On move-out day I met with Executive Director John Connolly regarding the $2000 community fee. I asked him to refund it since we were there such a short time. He said it "wouldn't be a problem" and said he just needed to discuss with his manager and that he would get back with me. He never did. A week later: I called; he apologized for being "sidetracked but that it wouldn't be an issue to refund the fee, the only reason to keep it, said John, would be if walls had been moved in her unit" and again said he'd get back to me. Another week: I called and left a voicemail. No reply. Finally: I received a brief voicemail rom John stating the fee was non-refundable because "it's in the contract." No courtesy call, no discussion--just a recorded message. To be clear, I spoke with five other senior communities in Houston. Every one of them has a policy refunding community fees when a resident leaves within 90 days for health or suitability reasons. St. Dominic Village stands alone in retaining the entire amount after only ten days of occupancy. I'm shocked, disappointed and frankly quite disturbed by John Connoly's actions. St. Dominic Village markets itself as a Catholic, mission-driven senior community. Yet their actions--accepting a resident they could not serve, then retaining a sizable fee after less than two weeks--feel more like financial exploitation than compassionate care. Contracts cannot foresee every circumstance; ethical leadership should. The refusal even to hold a live conversation before denying a partial refund was, in my view, both unprofessional and unchristian. Bottom line If you are considering St. Dominic Village, ask hard questions about their refund policies and care assessment accuracy. In our experience, a faith-based label did not translate into fair dealing or transparency--only an expensive lesson for our family. read more

My mom has been a resident in Independent Living for 4 years and has been very happy there. When she needed a hip replacement, she went into St. Dominic's skilled nursing and rehab facility on the same campus short-term. It was so convenient to bring her back to the same campus that has three tiers of care. The nurses and physical therapists were so kind to my mom. I visited her almost every day and, without fail, the facility was clean, my mom was well groomed and well fed, and I felt comfortable knowing she was safe and well cared for. The staff went above and beyond to get my mom walking again and they treated her with kindness. She was then able to return to her room in independent living. read more

My father entered St. Dominic's Village's skilled nursing unit in early May 2022 after being hospitalized for several injuries. He was admitted using Medicare and we were considered Medicaid pending once coverage was exhausted. It was explained to me by Amie Moses, the billing director, that we needed to submit a Medicaid application on his behalf and once approved, the coverage would apply retrograde up to three months' time. Amie advised that I make her the power of attorney of my father and apply on behalf of St. Dominic's for representative payee status for his social security check. She explained that the Medicaid application had to come from the facility, and I could not apply on his behalf as an individual since this was for long-term care. I became his power of attorney both medical and financial. I also became his representative payee for SSA benefits and I would be paying the facility on his behalf with those benefits. I found out later from a Medicaid agent that Amie had misled me about the process. She had told me I could not apply for his benefits but that she had to do it and that was untrue. I found out that she also listed herself as his power of attorney on that application, despite me submitting valid forms of proof to her office that I was his power of attorney. My father was placed in skilled nursing after a severe fall that resulted in him having two broken arms with multiple fractures in each of them. He had several spinal fractures and 6 stitches on his head. During his intake at St. Dominic's, he was also diagnosed with metabolic encephalopathy, primary hypertension, acute anemia, chronic kidney diseases, unspecified dementia without behavioral disturbance, depression, hyperlipidemia, and chronic congestive heart failure. (See documents attached) It should be noted that the dementia was advanced and caused him to be incontinent and keep a working memory span of 6-10 minutes, tops. These injuries required 4 follow up outpatient medical appointments. St. Dominic said that the facility would arrange for his transport to these appointments and that if I wanted to be present for the appointments, I could go meet him at the offices. I did meet him for every appointment. The first appointment my father was dropped off in the waiting room and left unattended. He did not have any shoes on, and he had not been bathed in days. The doctor on seeing him expressed concern for his situation and suggested that he was being neglected. The second appointment, I arrived early to ensure my father would not be unattended. He arrived dirty again, with an old, smelly diaper on. He was wearing his back brace, but it was upside down and backwards. The doctor expressed concern again and asked me where he was being cared for. I told him and I also explained that we were in a vulnerable position with the Medicaid pending status. Most/many skilled nursing facilities that accept Medicaid will not admit you when you are pending. The third appointment I attended, my father was dropped off 30 minutes late and had not been properly showered or shaved. We were there to remove the splints from his broken arms at that appointment. The doctor cut the splints off and informed me that his dressings had not been changed one single time since his release from the hospital 5 weeks prior. The ace bandages were extremely unsanitary, and the doctor suggested I try to find another facility as soon as possible. The fifth appointment was to scan his back to make sure that fracture had healed. I spent the morning at St. Dominic's cleaning him before the appointment and then I met him there. I told the doctor I was having trouble finding an alternative place to accept him during this pending period and he suggested I begin reporting the facility for abuse and neglect. My father was a patient at St. Dominic's for 7 months. Medicaid was approved in September of 2022 at which time I began seeking an alternative facility. He was on a few waitlists and was moved out of St. Dominic's in November of 2022. During the 7 months at this facility, I visited him every day, sometimes twice a day. I did this because his situation and care there was so unstable and dire. He was not safe there. I have pictures of several unexplained wounds on him from his time there. His diapers were often not changed for more than 10 hours, so I would go in the afternoons and evenings to do it myself. I would also change his linens daily since that was frequently not done. I had to do his wound care myself as well as his face shaving and nail trimming. I had 3 plan-of-care meetings with Brenda, the managing nurse, but nothing seemed to improve. Often if I would go in the afternoons and request assistance changing him at the nurses' station, the nurse would realize that my father was overlooked and had not been assigned a CNA for that entire shift. I went on a tour recently and when I got to the Village, I parked near the tall 5 story building thinking this was the Rehab SNF (my mom's doctor ordered rehab at a SNF following a hospital stay). The tall building is nice, however, the receptionist directed to the back of the Village since this was the wrong building (turns out this nice building is independent/assisted living, and not the rehab /skilled nursing facility). Honestly, I was shocked at the condition of the SNF, the only thing I can say to do it justice is the independent/assisted living is a Buccee's gas station and the SNF is the cringe worthy gas station. The dining room has food stains and dirt and maybe worse on the ceiling, there was a horrible urine smell when I passed by seniors, it looks dilapidated. I used the visitor bathroom and it was as bad as a cringe worthy gas station. I had just come from touring a rehab/SNF owned by the Methodist Church and the difference is alarming. The 5 star reviews here are misleading and likely not of the rehab/SNF, I wish I had known and I would not have wasted my time. Not one of the 36 pictures on this page are from the SNF, wonder why? We ended up touring another facility with a kind and knowledgeable social work team and they advised me to research every facility including looking at the Texas Health and Human Services most recent inspection of each nursing facility, I had no idea this existed. Do not under any circumstances send anyone you care about to this facility. They have poor internal communication, sending me to a doctors appointment in an ambulance where the appointment has been canceled days before. They couldn't even verify the doctors name so I could tell them. Additionally, if you're here on Medicare, they'll come by and give you a days notice that you need to leave or be charged without Medicare picking up the bill. They give you confusing information as to who's ordering the transfer. Apparently they don't give you any medical documentation or justification to leave early no matter if the medical staff says you shouldn't. read more

Saint Dominic's Village has done an outstanding job taking care of my loved one. He is in Independent Living & at the same time keeping a close eye to make sure he is well! Clean, simple, affordable, functional rooms, hot shower, allergy-friendly (non-smoking, non-pet except service animals). The Angel House part of this care community allows day stays. Competent and friendly staff. I was able to book after 5pm for 10pm arrival same night. Guard was notified and got me in, no problems. Free, comfortable self-parking near rooms, all on a small oasis behind a guarded gate. Didn't need any amenities for 2-day stay but the common lounge looked nice. Easy to get there: 500yd W of Holcombe exit off 288 (@90), on N side of Holcombe. Only 1/2mile further W to MDAnderson. read more

My husband and I went to tour this facility for our mother that needs rehab. I would definitely NOT recommend this place. When we first walked in and approached the front desk, the employee sitting there barely acknowledged us and when we asked to speak to admissions personnel she acted as if we were inconveniencing her. She stated that she didn't know where the lady is, probably at lunch. She said we needed to make an appointment for a tour. We stated that we would wait for the woman to return and would like a tour that day. We came back after an hour and the admissions director showed up and took us on a tour. The facility looks VERY rundown and old and had the smell of urine. It did not appear very clean. We also noticed multiple spot coolers hooked up to the vents throughout the building and were told the AC was not operating properly. When we toured the dining area a resident made a comment to us about how bad the food is. There was also a food cart that had left over food remnants left on it. In general, the place looked very unkept and the staff was not very welcoming or pleasant and acted as if we were a bother to them. If that is how they act with potential future patients , I can't imagine how they treat patients that are staying there. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

The Catholic Deaf community of Houston, TX meets in the small and comfortable Warren Chapel at this "complex." They meet at 11:15 am every Sunday and usually the priest is able to sign and talk at the same time. Otherwise there is an interpreter. The mass are usually shorter than most, and the people are usually friendlier than most. If you're looking to meet many Catholic Deafies in Houston, there's no place better than St. Dominic. read more

If you love your family member DO NOT send them here! My grandma is a current resident here and we are doing our research currently to find her another nursing home. The staff is horrendous!!! They are loud, rude, uncaring, lazy, ignorant, impatient, disrespectful, argumentative and everything you don't want for your loved one. My grandma is a devout Catholic and that is why we thought this would be an ideal fit but what a disappointment. Nobody behaves like this is a religious based facility. I have even reached out to Cardinal Dinardo and have never received a response. It's stunning that a religious based nursing home/assisted living facility could lack compassion, empathy and accountability but St. Dominics lacks all three. The only positive thing is the grounds are beautiful but the residents don't get to experience that but maybe 10% because nobody takes them outside so I'd say the grounds are just for looks and for the priests read more

Stayed here with my brother throughout his radiation treatment at MD Anderson. The staff is wonderful. It's very quiet and peaceful as well, perfect for those under going treatment. You can't beat the accommodations for such nominal fee either, nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. Breakfast is included as well and my brother bragged about the bakery chef. His favorite was the cheese Danish. read more

Mother and mother-in-law were at this facility three months and two months respectivley in 2012. Myself and husband visited most every day and found that staff said our mothers were bathed on days that we know was not true. Weekend staff failed to administer medications as prescribed. RN on staff one evening was totally unresponsive to one of our concerns and avoided discussion by going into a resident room and shutting the door. Husband and I filed separate complaints with the THHSC and Medicare. Not a well run facility and blatant coverups of mismanagement. We moved both mothers out to other facilities. read more
