Recently I have been reviewing my bills and one of my expenses have been an insurance policy for separate jewelry. We do not have a lot but we have a few items and it's a fixed cost each year that wasn't making sense to continue purchasing as the rates have increased dramatically. I felt maybe getting a safe would be a better alternative as it would be a one time cost vs paying for a policy each year. The break even point would be about 2-3 years of paying for the policy. I started my search and this business had stellar reviews. My first step was just to call the business to call for general questions. Alex took my initial call and was super helpful with answering some of my basic questions. He also, did explain that they did have display options at the store so I headed down there. It's about 30 mins from my house but when I arrived Alex greeted me and was able to go over multiple options and the pros and cons of each one. He was not pushy and even mentioned they were doing a special until the end of the month. I was able to put my hands on the actual safes and they have all the exact measurements and costs on each model. I took the information back to my wife and reviewed our options. Upon choosing a specific model I called back and Alex was able to finalize my purchase and schedule my delivery over the phone. About a week later they called about 15 minutes before delivery and showed up on time as promised. They were able to install the safe and go over the features within less than an hour. I went to this location yesterday to get new keys cut for my truck. I brought my own keys. The employee that I encountered was pleasant however he couldn't re key my truck after trying he advised me they would have to decline the job after cutting my key that wouldn't work. He offered me a new key that was way inferior than the one I brought. I stated that I wasn't pleased with the replacement key but it is what it is and as I was leaving the other employee that I can only assume was a manager said and I quote " well I guess you shouldn't have lost your fing keys" you are a locksmith this is the business you choose. It's customers like myself that keep your business running. My only hope in this review is that this person's manager or the owner knows what type of people he has running his business. Zero customer service. That comment was completely unprofessional and unnecessary as I was obviously already having a bad day having lost my keys. read more

This is a really good place. Ace Hardware City on Memorial Drive wanted $24.99 to simply cut a blank key that I had purchased on Amazon for my 2007 Mustang (since I had two working keys for my car, I did not need for them to program it). I took my blank un-cut key to Houston Safe and Lock and they cut it in less than two minutes for only $6. The person who waited on me was very nice. Took the newly cut key home and programmed it in my Mustang in less than 30 seconds and it worked perfectly. Highly recommend Houston Safe and Lock. read more

Vinnie came out to replace 3 deadlocks/handles and did a great job putting in higher quality locks and handles on all of our exterior doors. The locks are well made/strong and way better quality than what was in place in our home which were the original locks when built. Quality and Safety was priority for us and Vinnie did a good job installing. You cannot put a price on safety and quality locks for your home. This was a good choice that we chose this company and they came out very quickly when I called to take care of all of our locks/handles. When my family came to visit me in town, one of them accidentally locked my room with the keys inside the room. Looking at the stellar reviews on Yelp, I decided to give them a call to see if they could pick the lock. The travel fee was $65 and they quoted me $30 - $40 to pick the lock. I didn't have a good feeling about this place when I was talking to the guy on the phone because originally he had thought that I wanted my bathroom door picked. You know, one of those knobs with the hole on it where you can just slide a small screwdriver to unlock it? Yeah, that! He wanted to charge me between $30 and $40 to pick THAT on top of the $65 travel fee. If that had been the case, a decent company would have explained that the lock could be easily unlocked with that one simple tool. But not this company, no. Anyway, I explained what I needed and I really had to get inside the room because I'd just come back from the gym and I had to get ready for work so I told them to come. It took the service guy probably about 30 minutes after I'd called them to call me and another 15 minutes to get to my place. Well, before I called these guys, I had done a quick Google search on how to pick locks, right? And pretty much every single article that I found said that I needed a couple of tools and some patience because you have to listen to the clicking sound and whatnot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a lock picker, but I was expecting someone to do that. Well the service guy came, and looked at my lock, took his tools out, and pretty much jammed them in the keyhole and just wiggled and shook them violently. After about 15 minutes of jamming his tools, wiggling, shaking, and rattling the knob, he gave up and told me that he'd have to drill the knob to open it because the knob was designed NOT to be picked. Well, I'm pretty sure most knobs with a key are designed to be secure but what the hell do I know, right? I really didn't want to have the knob drilled because I didn't want to get a new set of knobs, but I was late so whatever. So he drilled the knob, charged me the $65 + $40 + tax. I wasn't all too happy, but I paid it. However, I don't think I'll ever call this company again in the future. Also, have check or cash ready. I was quoted a price over the phone. 65$ service fee and 75$ installation fee for my lock. Within minutes of setting that up I get a phone all from the locksmith that's going to be coming out. Vinnie I think was his name. He tells me that the guy I spoke to on the phone got it all wrong. All of the charges were going to be much higher due to my lock being a smart-lock. (I'd JUST explained the type of lock and all to the guy who answered the phone when I called the store and he never mentioned additional charges). Then once he gets to my place and takes everything all apart he says the lock won't fit. We'll have to make a new hole in the door. And that will be an additional 65$. Nearly 300$ later I have a new lock on my front door. It took him about an hour to finish the job. And probably all of four minutes to drill that new hole. read more

For starters, King Safe and Lock and Houston Safe and Lock are the SAME company with different locations. You can't lose when you bid against yourself! Vinnie is a very good locksmith. However, he's strange to deal with. The $65 trip charge quoted over the phone by Houston Safe and Lock grew to $150. He started by saying he could not fix the lock. A new mortise lock body had to be purchased on my own order. How do I know what model to buy? He said he could remove the lock body to determine model #. Then he suddenly said he could fix it for $150. Took it to his truck and fixed it. All the screws and plates were put back together and Vinnie was gone in a little over an hour. Vinnie's truck said King Safe and Lock on the side. Interesting experience. read more

After getting a rather stern note advising we needed to either fix or replace the lock on our mailbox we had no idea who to call. Voicing my concerns to my future mother-in-law she suggested I call Fred at Houston Safe and Lock. At the time our favorite neighborhood pub was right around the corner so H dropped in one day after happy hour and came home with a replacement lock and keys. Apparently it is easy to replace the lock as it took H under 10 minutes to install. Fast forward several months, I came home after a stressful day at work and tried opening my front door. The key I had was always a bit sticky and I nearly broke it off in the lock. So we went to the pub, had a decompression martini and headed over to HS&L. The store has a dizzying array of keys, locks, safes and other things I couldn't identify. Fred is friendly & gregarious and is proud of his clean store. I showed him my old key which he called cheap and he proceeded to make me a new key from a "top of the line" product. While we waited, he offered us a hot dog from a batch that he just grilled "out back". The key was ready before we finished our dogs. I took out my wallet and Fred said "No charge". I wanted to share an experience I had today on the way home from work with the driver of one of their vans. I was in the right lane as I approached the on-ramp from the Beltway. Their van crossed a solid white line and almost hit me, causing me to slam on my brakes. I gave him a little honk as we started to accelerate and he brake-checked me, coming to a complete stop. About a mile further I ended up behind the van again in the left lane. Traffic was moving slowly in the right lane and I didn't realize it until he exited, but he was driving under the speed limit to avoid letting anyone pass him. As we approached the 1464 exit, he cut across two lanes to take the exit. When I passed him he flipped me off. I believe a company is only as good as its employees. Fred, it happened over a year ago on the date of my review or the day before. It was 4:30-5:00 heading West on the Westpark tollway. Needed a spare motorcycle key and this place made me one for a mere 4 bucks! Price range from 2-7 which is awesome. While I was there, I learned I could make a key for my car for about half price of what the dealer charges...thats like 100+ off. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. The owner was there and helped customers as well. Good for him!!!! I just really had a great experience. Thought it would be a hard and complicated task doing boy stuff...like making a key....but Im good. Any female can do this! Lol. Edit: several months later I needed to have the safe moved, and I got the worst customer service when I called. They didn't want to help me, and insisted I send an email to someone at the company. I did, and it took a while for them to get back to me with a generic response outlining the costs and what information they need (I had already provided this in the original email). I told them what they needed, and the gave me a very narrow window of dates and times, none of which were convenient for me. They didn't care at all. The move ended up costing too much in my opinion. It was easy on their part... unbolting the safe from the ground, dollying it out to the truck, and then re-installing it in my new home. I needed my new house re keyed. I was able to schedule someone to come out in 48 hours. Kevin showed up when promised and looked and talked as a key professional. He explained all my choices more than once. I had no idea that there were so many. He did not try to up sell, but let me know what was the low-end, ok, high-end. He installed the new locks quickly and kept the place looking clean as he cleaned up all debris completely. He made sure my locks and doors were working properly as they were not when I moved in. He also entertained all my 4 year old's questions and showed him exactly what he was doing. I would highly recommend this locksmith. They are on time, honest, professional and friendly. Pretty disappointed in the phone call I just had with whoever was on the receiving end. I was looking to get a little information and give a bit of information to refer a client out to y'all. I won't be referring anyone business out, because this guy cut me off and told me to schedule everything with dispatch and that it would be really better for HIM if I called at 8 am tomorrow. Lost treferral business just based on this guy's dismissive attitude towards me. Don't answer your phone if you don't want to do business! Edit: the business owner replied to this as if I were a salesperson trying to sell him referral business. I was trying to set up a safe move for a client of ours, because i work for a moving company. I was also trying to evaluate whether they were fully insured and bonded. He was extremely rude, dismissive, and will receive no business from other clients that need safes moved that our movers are not equipped to move due to weight limitations. I cannot refer business in good faith to one of my clients for some business that waited several months to even follow up to this bad yelp review. The only benefit I would've received is helping one of my clients seamlessly relocate an item we are not sufficiently equipped to handle. I made no remark or indication that it was a sales call. I used them to re-key my rental property. They saved me big bucks by re-keying locks which I had no keys to. It cost me ~$130 to re-key 7 locks and get 3 sets of keys made. Everything was done at the store and my wait time was minimum. They do get very busy so at times service does suffer, but they are courteous, knowledgeable and have been in the business for a long time. In my experience Houston Safe and Lock company has no equal. I contacted the business owner. 'Fred', offering to sell him a 2 1/2 ton T-15 safe. Following our conversation I decided to give him the safe on 'consignment'. Although this model of safe is very expensive to purchase the resale market is limited due to the size and weight.. Fred sent over two young employees to my shopping center to maneuver a 6' 33" 2+ ton safe through five doors. They arrived earlier than expected and waited about (15) minutes for me. They did not complain and each young man expressed a positive 'can do' attitude. Judging by their young age & assumed lack of experience in moving this size and weight of safe, I almost sent them away. The damage they could have done to themselves or the surroundings could have been tragic. But, these young employees knew exactly what to do and how to do it. They worked as a highly skilled team, never complained and praised Fred, their owner, for teaching them what to do and how to do it. When my patio gate lock gave out on 1/14/2015, I gave Houston Safe and Lock a call. they had a locksmith at my house within 20 minutes. Within 10 seconds the locksmith named Robert or Rob had the gate open. the lock was just shot. Robert put in a top of the line lock within 20 minutes. I was back in my home in about 5 minute later.
