We stopped by Howard Park while in town for a concert and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Sitting outside with live music made for a great experience. The $10 burger special for the month was a standout--the portions were huge and definitely a good value. The tater tots, however, were overcooked and a bit too crispy for our liking. Service was quite slow. It seemed like the kitchen may not have been equipped to handle both indoor and outdoor seating at the same time. That said, our server was gracious and acknowledged the delay by offering a complimentary drink, which we appreciated. We understand that staffing can be challenging right now, but it might help to limit seating to what the kitchen and staff can reasonably manage. read more

I rarely use Yelp, but I must send a second review. We were at your restaurant on Tuesday evening. It truly was one of the most bizarre experiences. My ribeye steak was the worst steak I have ever had. It smelled weird, tasted worse, I am sorry I didn't return it. Didn't eat it. None of the tables around us were cleared after the customers left, gnats everywhere. It took over 20 minutes to order a bar drink, there were only 6 people in the restaurant, 4 were our party. No one at the bar. Waitress also not around. Can't even give it one star, but Yelp won't let me give a zero. read more

After a trip to the Dinosaur museum and then a tour of the chocolate factory, our group of about 16 people had a wonderful lunch at the Public House. Mark Tarner the founder stopped by and said hello to our group. Everyone enjoyed their food selections. I loved the inventive sweet and sour tots:-) A wait was a little long because we probably overwhelmed the staff but we were all in good spirits as our soft drinks were kept full and we enjoyed our appetizers. It was only their second day of opening and they handled everything very well. My Cobb salad was especially good with great avocado and grilled chicken and wonderful greens. My wife enjoyed the hot and sweet upside down chicken sandwich (big enough for two) whole breast is my guess. Fries were yummy especially with the Red-Gold Jalapeño ketchup. read more

I want to support this place because the food is good, it's locally owned, and it's in the neighborhood. The problem is that the service ranges from mediocre to downright terrible so Howard Park Public House is never our first choice. DTSB does an amazing job staging large events like First Fridays and the fireworks, so they had to know crowds were coming to the park and could not believe the restaurant was so unprepared and so woefully understaffed. It took 20 minutes just to get water, another 10 to order, another 10 to get drinks, and not all of our small party of 4 even got them without a reminder, followed by almost another hour just to get our food. Our appetizer came out AFTER our entrees! The server was very sweet, but she was sweating profusely and beyond frazzled with no help no support in sight, so she was a bit scarce. When she did appear, she was always apologizing and explaining that they only had ONE person in the kitchen. It got so bad she came around and told us they were closing the kitchen at 9:15, even though they had advertised all day on social media they were open until 10. Yet they kept seating people! Having been there for over 2 hours already, we just asked if we could stay for the fireworks. I was told yes so I wanted to get another drink, but I was told "sorry, the bar is closing early". Our visit to Howard Park Public House on July 4th was an epic failure and whoever the manager on duty was that night should be fired. GREAT TURNAROUND, THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE!!!!! I am so happy we went back (after 6 months) to give it another try. You changed and figured it out PUBLIC HOUSE. Clap! Clap! Clap! Bravo! Everyone we encountered was very pleasant, tentative and appreciative. Understanding host, tentative servers and professional staff. I was impressed! The atmosphere induces conversations, random smiles and just relaxing, casual feel. People all ages were there, from baby in a stroller to gray haired couples. There were many applauds for the live band playing the favorites and engaging with the audience (not overdoing it). And the food..... the food was beyond belief. Delicious, prepared to perfection by what must be a first class chef and kitchen staff. A bit pricey but burgers are still under $20 so there is something for everyone. The food was the main reason we were upset before but everything we tasted was as good as it gets in the area. You have to try it. Looking forward to bringing friends along the next time we stop by (and it will be soon). Can't wait for the Summer to enjoy one of the best outdoor seating areas looking over the river, bridge and downtown. Here's the thing. I really WANT to like this place. The wait staff is nice, it's got a good vibe, and is in a great location, but the food has been subpar every time we've been here. They call their burgers "Upside Down" which is just a strange marketing ploy. Their patties are incredibly thick, which throws the burger- to-bun-to-toppings ratio off, so even though my burger was cooked properly (medium), it ended up being dry. I also immediately judge a restaurant that has Kraft mac and cheese on their kids menu because it's disgusting, and how hard is it to make Mac and cheese? We came here on a Saturday hoping to catch a football game. We easily found spots at the bar in front of the tv--perfect! They had a more limited draft list and more options in bottles. We each ordered a craft and the goat cheese fondue. The goat cheese fondue was smaller but tasty. It came with slices of toasted bread to enjoy. The later it got, more people came and had dinner. This is a nice restaurant in South Bend, Indiana. It has a nice view of the downtown area and is very close to the water rapids. The Nashville chicken sandwich was awesome - very fresh - the fries and tater tots are good too. Just an FYI - the sandwich is not that spicy, could use more sauce to be honest but it is tasty. They imprint south bend on the bottom of their buns which I thought was cool. The decor is nice, bathrooms are clean and look fancy. Prices are reasonable as well - but the menu is pretty small. Make sure to really emphasize what you want on your food to your server - I wanted no pickles on my meal but came with it anyways, not the end of the world but still. A great breakfast, lunch or dinner spot! Their ingredients are locally sourced and often seasonal, but there's something for everyone at Howard Park Public House. We shared the Asian tots as a starter and honestly they were the star of the meal. Topped with a spicy sauce drizzle and wasabi sour cream, the only thing that would have made these better would have been some black sesame seeds. My burger and drinks were also very good, but I'd love to go back and try something different - maybe more appetizers or soups in the winter. Nearing the end of my meal I was left with only one side of a bun and a few bites left of a burger. the bun is thicker than most hamburger buns wish it was wider I think it would fare better. Just before checking out, I could see the manager speaking to another table and I presume comped something since they seemed thankful for it. Unsure of the reason but it shows accountability and friendliness of the staff were very visible. Prior to checking out, you are given a piece of chocolate in my case it was Mint Chocolate. Was served raw chicken tonight This was our 4th time, I ordered the honey hot chicken which is great typically and it was raw after I took two bites. (Hoping I don't get sick) I was nice about it (even tho that is pretty bad) and our waitress said they would take it off the bill and remake it. We got the bill and we were charged for the sandwich. Well my fiancée and I decided to stop in for lunch and give this place another go. Terrible idea for lunch if your trying to get in and out in under an hour. We sat at the bar which is open seating. This place was a disappointment but only because the website, sans the terrible pictures, lead you to believe you were getting extraordinary food. It even goes as far to imply that their burgers are better than Gordon Ramsay's. Not. Even. Close. To be fair, I've only had Gordon Ramsay burger at one location, Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, so I can only compare it to that burger which I've had a dozen times and I can attest that Public House isn't even close. It's mediocre at best and that's being generous. The description on the website states that the burgers are fresh ground and seasoned but it tasted like an unseasoned frozen patty. We got goat cheese fondue and that was equally a disappointment. We will return and give it another go and hope next time the food is worth the prices they charge. Having said that, the staff was friendly, our server was a little slow and not very attentive, but the ambience made up for it.
