Well-stocked on healthy brands like Ton's Of Maine, Burt's Bees, etc. Safe and easy parking. Good selection of pasta, juices, dairy, canned foods, and other staples. Meats and coffee for those of us that don't want to live to 130 are available at the deli. Pretty much everything ya need at a fair price and with smiles. I shop here frequently. Many items are constantly expired and they still sell them! Ridiculous, they have 4 checker lines but only ever have 1 checker at any given time, as a child I remember it being at least 2 and sometimes three. It's a basic market with expensive expired food, just go to St. Helena. read more

A Journey Down "Memory (Taste) Lane" SITREP So in case you didn't already know, I grew up in a Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) home on the East Coast in the SDA "Mecca" of Takoma Park, MD. I was born at Washington Adventist Hospital (when it was called Washington Adventist Sanitarium) in D.C. / Takoma Park, MD (the city-borders were in flux in the early 60s, though now it's "sited" in Takoma Park). I attended the progressive Wheaton SDA (Silver Springs, MD), the conservative Takoma Park SDA and very liberal Sligo SDA (Takoma Park) Churches. Graduated from Takoma Academy (T.A.). Then graduated from Walla Walla University. Married an SDA girl. And all during this time - roughly from the time of my birth to when I graduated college at 22, I grew up on food that was bought in SDA markets like this one in Angwin, CA (the home of Pacific Union College, also at it's sisster institutions in Walla Walla, WA and Loma Linda, CA. THE SETUP But life changes, people grow apart and end their marriages, your foundational life philosophy is now different than the one you grew up with and you turn your back on oppressive creeds towards more enlightened paths. And so you move on. Thus in this same way, I said goodbye to the food products (ie. Loma Linda Foods) that one would find in this store: vegetarian, gluten based, tofu-based, meat-alternatives. Now this doesn't mean the vegetarian life-style is not advantageous - and if anything, the ONE takeaway I kept from this SDA upbringing is that the vegetarian lifestyle is MORE preferable - but the reality is there are a myriad of other, some BETTER vegetarian & vegan food options than those being churned out by Loma Linda Foods and sealed in their cans. THE OLD DIET Still, running across this market was like remembering the smell of an old fashioned soda or piece of bubble gum that you no longer chew, but suddenly you have that whiff of memory that you enjoy (parts) of. So in the end, I bought some cans of Loma Linda Foods - a lot of vegetarian alternatives to things like "Links". And there is a propondence of "Links" - like 5-7 varieties - "Little Links", "Linkettes", "Big Franks", etc. It's like trying to describe the difference to one of my Scandinavian friends who's never had Mexican cuisine, the difference between Tacos, Burritos, Tostadas - "Aren't they all made of beans, rice, tortillas, cheese, meat, lettuce?" Yeah, they are. Go figure. THE MARKET It is actually well laid-out for a small market - it has a full-on produce section, and a well-stocked canned goods area. And every other section was well-represented. Though I can't say I scrutinized every aisle, I didn't see any meat-products jump out at me, so that is always a difference when I shop at my ole stalwarts of Safeway, Trader Joes & Costco back in Sacramento. I THINK I did see some soda for sale....."Oh MY!" THE LOWDOWN In the end, just fun to grab some cans to enjoy over the next few months and relive my youth. read more

Just returned from yet another less than rewarding friendly service experience at the market and adjoined Ace Hardware. Spent $60 at Ace and in the entire transaction the clerk did not once say hello, or say thank you, and finally no good-bye. This is not the first time this has occurred at this Ace location. Went over to the market and immediately encountered a manager woman who had every opportunity to say "Hello" or "Welcome" and instead looked down and at her task... same occurred in the bread aisle with an employee, and finally in the produce aisle a clerk filling the shelves within feet of us, completely ignored us and said nothing. It was not until I got to the register that an employee finally said hello once they began scanning my items. I am a big advocate of small businesses... and own my own in fact, but good service is the key to supporting small businesses. In the case of the market and Ace, after many visits since moving to Angwin in August, it is obvious that management should refresh what customer service and friendliness means. Nothing like feeling zero appreciation for making the effort to patronize the local market. I simply should not feel motivated to write a negative review and simple hellos and thank you's would have prevented the review. read more

First time to College Market since we were doing a hike nearby. We meet behind the store. It's across the street from Pacific Union College. Bathrooms in the back of Aisle 1A. They have ACE Hardware store on the Left side of the store, then grocery store on the Right. As a manager of another nearby market I have to say this market is just existing on the basics. It has the potential to be a great little market but it seems to be governed by the local cult (Adventists). No meat, or wine. They just recently allowed sales of coffee and caffeinated drinks. The Napa Valley is a culinary mecca and this market wants no part of it apparently. My hope is that one day they will realize that the MAJORITY of this community are NOT Adventists. read more

On the way up Howell Mountain, this was an oasis for Mark C. and I that we stopped at for lunch. They are totally a vegetarian/vegan market so if you are looking for meat, keep on driving. I grew up in Angwin, and go up the hill 4 to 5 times a month, year round, so I'm well acquainted with this market. 2 stars because the market itself, while shabby, is still a perfectly serviceable grocery store with a wide variety of interesting and eclectic items. Hopefully whoever was put in charge of the recent deli remodel isn't allowed to do anything to the rest of the store, because watching something go from meh to bad is a sad situation. The new deli is simply awful. And no, this has nothing to do with them serving meat, I eat meat so I don't care. The new deli is just bad. The old deli was nothing exciting, but the food was always good and had nice variation. Whoever is in charge of this deli is conspicuously absent when it comes to little details like, oh, you know... the food? The sandwiches are 90% bread with the thinnest smattering of wilted lettuce, mealy tomatoes and good old fashioned french's mustard. Even the long-standing vegimeat sandwiches have lost all their lustre, and they weren't anything special to begin with... but at least they used to taste good. Now they're nothing special AND they taste bad. Worse bread, worse fillings, worse everything. And hey, there's a SEPARATE CHECKOUT NOW for the deli. What??? Frankly, the instant someone mentioned that the deli would have a separate register from the rest of the store someone should have said "wait a second...." and put a huge hold on this remodel. Nothing makes a trip to the store more convenient than having to go to two separate checkouts, right? Maybe they should set up a third checkout just for produce, and a fourth just for dairy. I mean if more is better, go all out! The College Market deli, as I said, was never anything spectacular, but it was always serviceable with decent food. Unfortunately it's been replaced with a deli that churns out, if I'm being honest, terrible food in an inconvenient setting. Booo. College Market is a health food store that's a pilgrimage spot for Seventh-Day Adventists. It's across the street from Pacific Union College&a short way from Elmshaven, the final home of Ellen G. White, the founder of Seventh-Day Adventism. As is with Adventist establishments, there's no meat, no fish, no alcohol. One will find plenty of Worthington brand meat substitutes, some in huge cases for college students. The selection is surprisingly good, considering the grocery store's relatively small size. They have great prices on persimmons. They carry pamphlets such as "Natural Remedies for Asthma" and "Enhancing Male Libido Naturally." They've got lower prices than Whole Foods... and they're local! The bookstore carries a fairly sizable selection of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks, along with books on Seventh-Day Adventist beliefs and Ellen G. White's extensive writings. They have supplies for sprouting, herbs&spices in bulk, as well as kitchen tools like juicers. For college students, they have a mini-cafeteria&a small dining area. For a grocery store, it has a spectacular setting (and the drive there has some astounding views of the Napa Valley) It's out in the woods, in Nature's grandeur. College Market is definitely the place for local Napa Valley natural shopping! read more

This is own town market. Closed on Saturdays due to their Seventh Day Adventist-ism values. The also sell no meat alcohol or tobacco, though they introduced caffeine about 7-8 years ago. Very friendly staff mostly college kids at the registers. The selection is decent, if you like bulk foods there is 2 isles of self serve bulk food dispensers included carob coated items for the old schoolers out there! There is an Ace hardware which is pretty well stocked. You can even get Ethernet cables and such which is surprising for tiny little town, but the Ace guys are all very very knowledgeable, eager to help, and it is not uncommon to see them catching up with the town locals having a blast talking and carrying on and such. The book store inside the market is pretty much just for the college kids (PUC university(Seventh Day Adventist college)) mostly text books, although the supplies are priced very well. There is also a post office which yes is closed on Saturdays as well, and a gas station (again closed on Saturdays, but the pumps are on). As long as you're a health nut and you're not hungry for meat, this mid-sized grocery is the place for you. If you're in the market for meat, the only place you'll find it is in the dog food aisle. It's been done, trust me! Good prices and an awesome selection of organic, vegetarian and other generally hippy-ish products make this store what whole foods used to be, before the hype and high prices. The College Market is a bargain and a great source for anyone who cares about the source and quality of the foods they eat. They also have a great selection of natural home and beauty products, like soaps, toothpaste, etc. Even essential oils and homeopathic stuff. The down side is a limited selection of fresh produce and a generally lackluster presentation, lighting, and organization. read more

There's a couple of levels that I'd like to break down this little rating of Angwin Plaza and that would be primarily: College Market and Ace Hardware. While both of them reside side by side within the same space and you can purchase things from the Market in Ace (and vice versa), they always feel leagues apart in quality. The Market: I'd like to say that, living a mere stones throw away (you can see where I live from the front door), I don't shop here for big grocery visits. For that I'd rather drive down the mountain to go to Safeway. Pros: -The Market is a decent lunchtime stop. Since there's not much in Angwin, this is the place to get a quick bite while on lunch break. -Good selection of veggie meat. -The people who work here know my family by first name and they interact with us nearly every time we visit. Cons: -Rather unreasonable prices on a lot of things. I've noticed that some things here are up to double the price that I can get them in St. Helena, especially factoring in the coupons I can get from Safeway. -The fruit almost always is terrible. As a matter of fact, I'm writing this right now because I've just bitten into another apple I've purchased from the College Market that was rotten. Last month I bought raspberries here that were covered in mold in two days. -I can almost never get diapers here for my kids. Usually they only have sizes N,1, 2 and 6. This is extremely frustrating as a parent. This only sucks more when I've run out on a Friday night or on Saturday when the Market is closed. -They don't accept WIC, SNAP, etc. due to their refusal to stock tuna. I don't have these, but I'm aware that this could be a severe problem for others. Overall, the Market is not particularly good at much outside of being a lunch counter, which is why I don't do much regular shopping here. Ace Hardware: Now I don't normally have to do much business over in hardware, but the experience has always been really positive. The guys in Ace always hook me and my wife up with just what we're looking for, even if we're not sure what it is that we need. If they don't have something, such as the battery I needed for my car, they were able to get it for me pretty quickly. In fact, they were able to get the type of battery I needed in a few hours. Ace Hardware in Angwin is excellent. They know what they're talking about (even when you don't), they're pleasant, and I can always count on them having what I'm looking for. We were staying for a week at Lake Berryessa and stumbled onto this place when we stopped at the attached hardware store. Given that there are NO stores where were were staying, this place was an oasis! Yes it was a little rundown. Yes they had fans and A/Cs for sale that were stored in old defunct freezers. Yes, the giant sign at the back heralding "Natural Foods" was over an aisle with coffeemakers and other kitchenware. But when you have no other options, this place was a welcome find, plus they carry Yoo-hoo. We didn't buy any, but they had a large section of bulk items. During our two visits I didn't even notice that they didn't carry meat. They have a public restroom. read more

Deli food will make your lower extremities speak in a bad way. The contract for the Deli at the College Market and at Pacific Union College's Cafeteria is held by Bon Appetite. Really horrible! Spoke with a current PUC college student on the Evans Airport Shuttle bus earlier this week and I asked her what she thought of the cafeteria food and no hesitation - "it's very bad"! read more

Visited the College Market and met Chuck, the manager as he was inspecting the fresh produce. He greeted everyone and directed parents to get a free banana for their child. His authentic approach to treating customers as people combined with the superb eye for quality makes me glad to shop there. read more

Awful store. Beyond the bizarre, fake meat products (sold in HUGE cans) the produce sucks! Ironic for a vegetarian store, right? Staff are not helpful at all and the hours are ridiculous.
