So there we were, finished our dinner, just checked into the motel, checked out the patio, decided we needed to have some wine and enjoy that patio. The problem is, it's a Sunday night and the streets look like they're rolling up quickly. it's 7:58 PM, what are we to do? We get in the car and head down to sunshine foods. It's now 8:04 PM and the place is looking empty. We bump into one of the employees on the outside of the store and he tells me they'll open up for us. In a world where it would've been really easy just to say we're closed, he chose a more uncommon route. They let us in. We bought water and wine as they patiently waited for us to review their massive inventory of Wine. The moral of the story is, kindness counts, and karma is a good thing. They were good to us, and we truly appreciated it. We also appreciated the pint of Ben & Jerry's, the water we bought, and the bottle of Frog's Leep Zinfandel. read more

I randomly stopped by this grocery store looking to grab something quick to eat as I was passing through Saint Helena. I was excited to see that they had a Full Service Deli Counter with a wide array of meats, cheeses, and breads to build a custom sandwich. They also had Specialty Sandwich Menu with ~20 different options. I ended up ordering the Old Fashioned Meatloaf Sandwich ($13.99), which was delicious and filling... well worth the price considering the size/quality. While I was waiting for my sandwich to be made, to perused the rest of the store. I was so tempted to grab more items, but knew the perishables wouldn't last on my car ride home. Sunshine Foods isn't the nicest grocery store ever, but it sure is well stocked! This is a must-visit when in the Napa Valley, as it has pretty much everything you need. I love the small selection of Napa souvenirs like local soaps, handmade chocolates, and photography cards from local artists, and they have a surprisingly well curated liquor and wine selection. The deli is a thing of beauty, with all sorts of prepared salads (jalapeno macaroni salad, fruit salads, shrimp salad, etc.). They have sandwiches that are ready to grab and go. Individual cheese trays and myriad charcuterie choies are offered too, making this a one-stop shop for your wine country picnic! I like to stop in on my first day in town and grab a bouquet of flowers for my hotel room. It's the little things that matter! The employees are always friendly and helpful, too, which is so important. I like that they are not aloof to tourists, and I appreciate that. Because this is wine country, the prices are high, so be prepared to pay a substantial markup for most everything on the shelves. Bring your wallet, and know that this is a really fun place to browse. I love grocery stores, and this has consistently remained one of my favorites over the years. read more

Great grocery store in St. Helena. We went there to pick up food for our family picnic. Everything you need from fresh produce to a variety of meats to hot soups and freshly prepared sushi rolls. Oh and don't forget the rows and rows of wines and cheeses. We picked up some Iberico ham, French bread, a variety of cheeses. Couldn't believe I found BOQUERONES WHITE ANCHOVIES. Had them in Spain and absolutely loved them but haven't seen them anywhere in Hawaii or California until here. At the exit, they have a shelf full of utensils. Couldn't believe I saw chopsticks!! This is a beautiful grocery market! I came here to pick up sandwiches to have after a wine tasting and I'm so glad I did! I tried the Tuscan which was sopressata, asiago and vinaigrette on a baguette and the Sioux-Z-Wow which was grilled chicken and Brie on a baguette. Both were delicious but my favorite was the Tuscan. It had such high quality sopressata and was just perfect for after a wine tasting. For ordering sandwiches, I called 20 minutes ahead and the sandwiches were ready for pick up. In addition to sandwiches this market has nice salads, desserts and plenty of other items available that you could need for the perfect picnic. read more

Great place food and meat market best deli sandwich's and sushi I shop there almost everyday

We were in the area for wine tasting (of course), and my sister-in-law forgot her readers (eyeglasses). This was the closest store, so we took a chance and dropped in to see if we could find some for her. We loved browsing around. They had some children's books, they had baked goods (including kouign-amann, a french pastry!) and pots of coffee near the check-out. They had cute birdhouses out front made from reclaimed wood! We enjoyed going up and down each aisle, pleasantly surprised at the variety of goods they offered. And YES! they had reading glasses. They had a really nice selection of different colors and strengths. If you forgot something on your trip, don't dismiss this store because it's a grocery store. They might just have it! read more

This review is solely for the deli! They have such a wide variety of meats and cheeses to choose from! You can either make your own custom sandwich or choose from their menu. Everything is fresh and made to order. I'm a truffle lover and they have a truffle ham option, which I never knew existed until this market. So thankful I tried this place! My all-time favorite is the caprese sandwich with truffle ham added and all the extra toppings! They only charge extra for avocado or bacon, all the other toppings are included. Upon entering, you see the massive cheese case with a wide variety of high-end cheeses. I like about all cheeses, including bleu, so picking out a few cheese options for a future cheese and cracker plate was not a problem. They also have Cowgirl Creamery options. They also have an adjacent sizable olive bar. There are plenty of wine, beer and spirits if that's your thing. It's a real supermarket so has just about everything. They also make fresh juiced orange juice which is sweet and delicious. If you want specialty foods, there isn't a Whole Foods nearby and Sunshine is just as good if not better. read more

Once again visited while staying in St. Helena--what a great store! The best cheese and olive selection I've seen at any store and a great deli/bakery. One night we staying in and shared a delicious roast beef and provolone on sourdough with chipotle mayo on the side. The side salad of 5 beans hit the spot and we enjoyed the coconut cream cake. A few exciting finds: - Lurisa Bolle sparkling water from Italy - I've been looking for this since we were in Italy - Cheeses: for example, aged Goudas not from the usual Beemster or Unikaas, abondance fermier Rodolphe le Meunier, Gutensberg. They had the card of the cheese curator for the store - how great is that?! - Jose Andres chips in different flavors including cured cheese They had really nice looking mini cakes / desserts, good produce, specialty sodas, and a lot of other fun stuff to browse. I stopped into Sunshine Foods in the middle of a boutique wine tasting. I mean, come on, I needed some cheese to pair with my newly purchased wine. The cheese selection here BLEW MY MIND....and I'm from Wisconsin! In fact, I took a pic of this impressive cheese section and immediately texted it to my 'Sconnie friends. Even they were impressed. Staff here are so lovely! I came here specifically for the cheese selection because my good friend who works at one of the premium wineries told me to buy the Humboldt goat cheese before I left and he specifically pointed me to Sunshine Foods! The staff was so helpful in guiding us on which cheese to buy. Not only that but it was a positive shopping experience overall because the store offers a wide variety of gourmet food and services as a reasonable price. I love Sunshine and shop there every day.I am only posting this to get attention.I have bought fish here for 25 years. Their current department sucks. The attitude is awful, they do not care.I stood for 10 minutes waiting for service,I was the only one in line. In the last 2 weeks, I have had to throw fish away twice as it was off. I asked for a refund and was told they would get back to me.I am done with their fish department, Safeways is even better. We will now order from whole foods and have it delivered. Jay, you need to look at this as I am not the only one who has had bad fish. You guys are playing with our health and we should not be put us at risk. read more

I find the prices here to be ridiculous. It isn't even all organic and some of the prices are 3x what you see elsewhere (other health foods stores). Yesterday when I went in there were two young adults sitting on the check out counters staring at their phones. One of them got up to help someone when they came to check out, the other one didn't even notice me waiting for several minutes. I was amazed that they can sit on the check out counters and stare at their phones and get paid! I am a parent to two young adults and I would die if I saw them being that lazy and careless at their place of work. I don't think I will be shopping there again. It was $100 for 1.5 bags of groceries that included a tiny bit of fish and no other proteins. Overall nothing worthy of another visit. read more

We had a large crowd gather from out of state this week, and ordered food from the casual catering section. Darcel assisted us. She was a delight to work with and had great advice. The food was spectacular and all of the guests were happy and well fed. Special kudos for the antipasto tray, (the dolmas especially), El guapo dip and the chili fig dip. So we were running short on time and couldn't hit all the local wineries. We decided to Sunshine foods to get a mixed case of various cabs. Sunshine did not disappoint. If you have time ask for Henry. He was such a big help. He gave us a ton of recommendations all varying in age and price. We have not been disappointed. Everything he suggested was tasty. It's not just the wines that are fabulous the cheeses are out of this world. We enjoyed some samples of a dreamy Irish white cheddar as well as a nice nutty gruyere. They also had an olive and tapenade bar that went for days. This place is seriously the place to go for all of the wine tasting essentials. We will definitely be back! read more
