This review is for the bakery department. I couldn't find a place to order a cake from in St Helena so I decided to try the cake from here. I placed an order on Friday morning to pick it up on Monday afternoon. The staff was able to get my order in on a short notice. I ordered a vanilla cake with custard filling and strawberries inside. The cake was delicious! Probably the best Safeway cake I've ever tried. There was a good amount of custard and strawberries inside. I had tried the same Safeway cake in the Bay Area a few weeks before and it did not taste as good as this one. Great job to the bakers here! Thank you! read more

This Safeway has been an incredible stop for things I've forgotten on my trip. It's been nice for snacks as well as toiletries. We're visiting from out of town and while things aren't cheap, Safeway has been an affordable option. We are here for a little birthday trip. My fiancé bought me some gorgeous tulips from here that have elevated the entire trip. Their flower selection here is so beautiful. And a really great price too. It's a big grocery with lots of options. We tried going to the hot bar the other night for dinner, but it seemed to have closed before 8pm. That being said, it was Easter so it makes sense. I stopped into Safeway in St. Helena short on time--needed to grab a few things and a quick bite from the deli. Big mistake. When I got to the deli counter, I tried to read the digital menu, but it switched slides before I could even process it... and then never came back. I approached the man behind the counter, but instead of offering help, he just stared, creating an awkward silence. The sandwich I ended up with was poorly prepared, and he didn't even offer to cut it. With the clock ticking, I took it and left. The rest of the store, though? Fantastic. The wine selection is HUGE--better than your average Safeway by far--and I love the charming touch of naming each aisle after cute street names. This Safeway has always served this town well. It's too bad that about 20 years ago. The city decided not to let them expand because we all suffer for it. If Safeway had more square footage, they would have a better selection. They do pretty darn good for such a small. The staff is really nice. Some of them are real characters. ANTHONY provides extremely poor customer service and has a consistently horrible attitude. He was completely rude, unprofessional, and even got in my face in an aggressive manner. At one point he was twerking on the job, which is wildly inappropriate workplace behavior. I also see multiple other reviews complaining about him, clearly showing this is a long-term, ongoing problem. He clearly dislikes his job and treats customers as if helping them is an inconvenience. This place is okay, it's just like any other Safeway, just more crowded, understaffed, and loud. There where like three lanes open, with lines of 5 people or more, clearly they don't have enough employees. I think there's something with the automatic doors though, as I was walking through with my grandfather, the door randomly decided to close WHILE HE WAS GOING THROUGH. I'm finally giving one extra star because they FINALLY installed some self-checkout stations, and that has alleviated the lines and process a bit. However, this Safeway is still one of the worst: (1) Worse selection (missing jumbo-sized frozen veggies, fresh produce is less varied and less fresh than other stores, etc) (2) The beer selection is, hands down, the worst I have seen in a Safeway. Literally 2/3 of the aisle is cheap lager (budweiser, modelo, etc) and the other 1/3 is IPAs. That's your choices here (3) The prices are the highest of any Safeway I have been to... on par with the one in Waikiki, except... (4) At least the ones in Hawaii have a better wine selection. It's crazy that the Safeway located right next to the wineries has a worse selection than other Safeways far away. read more

Outside of their extremely high produce prices, my biggest reason for the three stars is how I have been treated at their customer service counter. Three times over the past year or so, I have kindly inquired there as I have not received stated discounts that I should have, usually after scanning digital coupons while shopping. One time I was treated kindly and in a respectful manner, and left there feeling appreciative of the encounter and the service person. The other two times were less than pleasant and I was made to feel like I was asking for something above and beyond. Especially today... The lady at the counter never smiled, acted like I was bothering her, and after walking to the isle where the items were located, came back to unapologetically report that one of the two items did qualify but the other did not. I told her that I scanned the coupon on the item in question and it showed as a clipped deal. I also had the app open on my phone to show her that it did in fact qualify, as the photo of the exact item was showing in the clipped deal item. Her response was, "I'm not going to argue with you, so will just give you the discount". I was a bit taken back by her attitude as I offered to show her the exact item in my app. She then interrupted me mid sentence and with much attitude said "did you not hear me say I am going to take care of you?" (as if she was doing me a favor). I explained that I was not asking her for something other than what the coupon showed. She wouldn't even look at my phone and I left feeling like a criminal. I was kind and cordial the entire time, but I felt like telling her to get a job where she doesn't have to deal with people, as she was not at all good at it and should not be in customer service. Safeway needs to put people at the customer service window that knows how important service actually is, especially in a small town like St. Helena. I am not happy to write this review, but I do hope that Safeway management sees it. read more

If I could give a one star I would. Waited over 20-30 mins to have someone come to guest services. Asked three workers to help and they said they would call and no one still came. It really takes a lot to get either a one-star or five-star rating from me. I used to deliver baked goods to Safeway and Von's throughout California, so I've been to several dozens. Safeway St. Helena is, without doubt, the worst I've been to. They have a standard Safeway selection of items and their produce is pretty good. They have to be the most expensive Safeway I've been to. Oh I realize it's Napa county but even then they are overpriced. Here's where everything falls apart.....customer service. Maybe one out of twenty employees here are friendly and helpful. Not only is the staff slow and unfriendly, they all seem to be genuinely miserable working there! Deli, flower dept, meat counter, bakery....all very slow. Checkout is a nightmare! Lunchtime and peak hours are a disaster here. There is no self-checkout lanes and never enough checkers. And with the checkers they do have, few are actually good at their job.....to an absurd level. One cashier asked if I had a lighter. Well yeah, I do. "Can I borrow it because I want to burn your hat". I happened to be wearing a Raider hat. Who knows what would happen with a MAGA hat! Another big bald guy, usually works nights, makes the weirdest comments and inappropriate jokes. He's just creepy as hell. Don't even bother with the customer service desk, you are wasting your time (and apparently theirs too)! This is what happens when you have horrible management. You'd hope they would have figured this out by now and remedy their personnel problems. Nope! It's the only Supermarket in the area and I've unfortunately shopped there, off and on, since 1997. It's never got any better. Sunshine Foods (only a few blocks away) is the exact opposite. They have a well-trained, knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous staff. Fantastic meat counter! But it's a small "fufu" market that is expensive with a vastly smaller variety of goods. Steer clear of this Safeway if possible. Unfortunately for the locals, it's the only "cheap" game in town. This safeway location was my go to grocery store when I lived and worked in the area. It was either here or Sunshine Foods. No Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, just good 'ol Safeway. We stopped by recently to pick up some ingredients, and the place hasn't changed a bit. One thing that changed for the worse are the lines. One of the nastier Safeway stores I've been to. A genuine horror. The express lines move slowly, the produce is sad, and the service is generally rude. It's a contrast with the 24 hour Safeway in Napa that was a real lifeline during the wildfires.... and is for the most part, clean. The St. Helena Safeway shows laziness- with the popular Sunshine grocery nearby along with a health food store, both that are superior. Angwin has its own natural/vegetarian foods grocery store by Pacific Union College. As the last major chain store until Healdsburg, this place is a disappointing mess. Scary. read more

He is angry and intimidating and takes his frustrations out on your customers. I will not go in again to your store, even though it is a convenient place to shop. Never again!! The 4 stars are for selection and the majority of the team that works there, with the exception of Chris. I was there last week to pick up a some things for a dinner, including a bottle of vodka. At the check out, I was asked for ID by this particular cashier. I said, gosh it's in the car, but I assure you, I am 50! He then began a dissertation on how it was illegal for me to be in Safeway without an ID, but he was going to let it go this time. He also offered me a warning, not to return to his line again, without an ID. Well Chris, I appreciate the advice, however, if I need clarification on the legalities of carrying an ID, you won't be my key source. Funny. I don't really understand why this Safeway is getting such low reviews and ratings because this is the only Safeway for miles in this quaint little town! I'm just glad that there IS a Safeway here! It's pretty much the same Safeway/Vons that I am used to so not too surprised there. This is the most quaint Safeway that I know of. Yes, it is literally on the wrong side of the tracks. Yes, it is rather small and cramped. But, the employees here have been the friendliest and most cooperative of any market that I have ever been to. And that is the best. read more

I love shopping at St Helena Safeway store the products vegetables daily pastries are awesome the people there are very nice but one thing bothers me is the fact that they're pressing the employees to work 6 days straight without having to do it days off per week this is concerning because the stress is showing on their faces even though they smile I've asked them how they were feeling and they stated that they're doing the best they can but the management is pressed them to work six days straight and one day off any normal human being can work that but it wears you down I believe the management should make a conscientious effort of giving it every employee today's off and hiring part-timers to work in sections needed like the deli courtesy stocking even if it's part-time people yes it's very difficult to hire but still everywhere it should be made to support the full-time staff there at St Helena Safeway thank you very much read more

I don't normally review Safeways, but here's the deal. This one is pretty nice (in sad contrast to my Potrero Hill branch), probably because of the St. Helena demographics. I used to do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's and the Good Life, and rarely went to Safeway, but now I do again, thanks almost entirely to the O line of everything: peanut butter, olive oil, spinach, grapefruit juice, basil plants. Like Trader Joe's, the O line gives the masses very reasonably-priced organic food. Now I come to Safeway. I must say, this branch also always seems to have sweet deals on wine, and if you buy at least 6, there's the 10 percent discount. So now I shop at Safeway again. read more

The clerk was extremely slow and took a 2 minute break between customers and when she came callback talked to the patron instead of wiring on checking out the groceries. WOW! I've always had good experiences at Safeways in general, but this one is by far the nicest. When employees greet you and talk to you, they are genuinely caring, and pay attention! This is a smaller Safeway than I'm used to, but its the right size for this small town. You can get some wines, but they're smart to not make it too big when you have all the other wineries around town to check out. I'm sure this will be my go-to grocery store in town. read more
