Howell signature omelet. This is a great old lounge, with old counter seats and a family that runs it. Loved this place. The ambiance alone is enough to make me work my way through the menu, but the food makes it easy. Solid breakfast omelet, perfectly crispy hash browns , and toast , all perfect. Fresh Ingredients and skilled cooking makes this my goto breakfast place in Oregon City. The dish was listed as having a hollandaise sauce. It wasn't really. It was a split cheese sauce, that aside from being split and a bit stodgy, was pretty good. Still I would recommend the dish, maybe without the sauce.

We went here for breakfast, and I had the pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The bacon was lovely and crispy, the pancakes were so fluffy and light, I don't know how they did it but they were truly a delight. The scrambled eggs were good. The true delicious part were the hash browns by husband had, they were crispy and well cooked, we will be back solely for those. It is a true whole in the wall and we love it! The service was quick and friendly and the environment was a mix of an old school dive and diner mixed. We will be going back!

I've been going to Howell's for 10 years, and it's a total gem! Their homemade food is amazing, and the portions are perfect. It's a great place for brunch on Sunday mornings for a mimosa and Irish benedict. The whole place is just magical. It's a dark, loud dive bar, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Plus, they have awesome servers and cooks! I'm not just saying this because I love it here but I always win at video poker! My boyfriend and I go there often to play the jukebox and have a delicious breakfast. I recommend the Irish benedict, Howells omelet, country benedict and always get the country potatoes with onions!! So many friends and family have been there with me. It's our favorite place in Oregon City!

I heard the breakfast here was pretty good, so I thought I'd try it out. I have no idea if the food is as good as people say it is, but he employees and owner are horrible, treating customers the way they do! They clearly do not care about their customers or the customers' safety. Not only do they berate and yell at their customers, they put them in jeopardy of illness by refusing to take basic sanitary precautions, and they seem to revel in this decision. After my server brought my water and utensils, she went over to the grill (you can see the grill from the dining room -about 15 feet away). I wondered how she was going to multi-task cooking and serving, but another server tended to me and I ordered my beverage. As I was waiting, I noticed the cook was not wearing a head covering, and her carpet bangs were flopping in her face as she was vigorously scraping the grill. Then I noticed something even worse: with her bare hands, she began mixing something in a large bowl and placing the food on the grill! When I server came for my order, I asked about the cook not wearing a head covering, and the server claimed that they didn't need to wear head coverings, so they chose not to. I told her that I would stick with my beverage and not order any food. That's when things got weird. -I now was going to be late for an appointment (due to having to go to another restaurant to eat), so I was voice-texting my client. As I was voice texting (at a regular audible level), the cook began shouting in my direction, "Do you have a problem?!" I ignored her and continued my texts. Then the owner came over to my table and aggressively stated, "Can I help you?! Do you have a problem?!" I told her I was simply texting a client, and she started in on me: (1) She heard I had a "problem" with her employees not wearing a head covering, (2) No one has ever complained about it before, (3) It is not the law, so she doesn't require her employees to wear anything, (4) If I don't like it, I should never come back (5) (and this was a doozy) Her employee's hair won't get in the food. I told her I wouldn't come back, and then she proceeded to yell at me to get out. She refused to take my money, yelling, "I don't want your money!" and as I was leaving, both the owner and her cook yelled a bunch of things at me such as: "Don't ever come back!" "Thanks for supporting local businesses!" (sarcastic). I also would like to add that by the time I was leaving, the cook's long bangs were behind her ears, and she had never gone anywhere to wash her hands or put on gloves (she was in my line of sight the entire time). This means she had touched her hair and continued to touch food and cook with dirty hands. *As of 2025, Oregon law continues to mandate that food employees use effective hair restraints to prevent hair from contaminating food or food-contact surfaces. This requirement applies to both head and facial hair, ensuring that all potential sources of hair contamination are adequately controlled. Therefore, cooks in restaurant kitchens are legally obligated to wear appropriate hair restraints, such as hairnets, caps, or beard covers, while preparing food.*

From Canby to Portland, we're looking for a new restaurant to eat before heading back home. I searched, and brought us to Howell's. Since it was early in the evening, on a Sunday, the restaurant was empty, parking around the corner, we entered and seated ourselves. No one to greet us! The lounges area, was lite up, people were there, on my way to the restroom (marked Exit), I have to ask the people where the restroom was! I actually went in the men's restroom, because we've traveled and have had a very busy day. Of course, there were cobwebs on the floor! It wasn't too clean, either. Our order was taken, the server was also the cook. He seemed a little 'surly' at first, but at the end he warmed up and turned out to be a 'nice, friendly' guy! Hubby ordered: Hot turkey sandwich. It came with mashed potatoes & gravy, and cooked green beans & cranberry sauce. And a side salad. Homestyle dinner. He said everything tasted fine! He finished all his food, except not the mashed potatoes, more than he could eat. I thought the green beans were good. I liked them. (I could have taken them with me, too). He enjoyed the salad as well! I ordered the Club House - Triple-decker toasted turkey, bacon, ham, cheese, lettuce & tomato. I should have said: 'easy on the mayo'. I didn't, and of course, I was wiping some off the excess. The homemade potato chips were tasty, but it was the bottom of the bag (to me, I thought was store-bought). I was saving the other half from grandson's visit the following day, but half was all I could really eat, since I was feeling sick, from all the mayo. Other than that, I LOVE my club house! was a perfect choice for me. I did mentioned to my server about the chips, and he walked over to the counter, and brought me a fresh bag of chips, which was now look appealing than the crumbs I was given earlier. It's been fun, visiting a new restaurant, so I can add to my YELP reviews!

Howell's is a nice little dive bar that serves some decent food. We went during lunch and they had a taco special. It was something like $5 which was a bargain. I had the club house sandwich and it was great as well. The service was a little slow but there were only two people working in a bar full of regulars.

I ordered a couple cocktails here and both were top notched. The bartender was busy but was still friendly. The vibe here is trendy and definitely a great place to bring a date. The night I came there was a live singer performing.

We were visiting family in the area and had two people in our group local to the area who had been there several times in the past. We first went and checked in and were told there was a 10-15 minute wait. The hostess was very kind, took our number and sent us to the upstairs bar to wait for a table. We were greeted by a friendly bartender who took our drink orders (cocktails and wine) and we enjoyed our beverages while chatting by the bar. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with large velvet green booths, all new, updated and well done. The drinks were all great. The downstairs hostess came upstairs to let us know our table was ready, and we paid and went downstairs. So far, we were all really happy with our experience. The prices of the drinks were all around $15-20+ but we were all okay with it given the good service (thus far), high end atmosphere, etc. There were people in there but it was a pretty mellow Saturday evening. We were given a nice large area to sit and thanked the hostess. The waitress came and was clearly a little overwhelmed but took our drink orders. I mentioned a drink my husband had upstairs and asked if I could have it, but was told they had a different menu down here and I needed to order from that menu. I looked it over while the others ordered their drinks, and when she came back to me, I asked if I could go upstairs to order the drink I wanted, and bring it down. She said sure. I put in an order for a couple food items with her, and she left. My brother in law kindly offered to go upstairs and order the drink and was gone for quite a long time. We learned that when he was upstairs, he went to the bar and mentioned I wanted a drink from his bar. The bartender's mood shifted and he said he had 10 drinks ahead of my BIL, and asked him to go downstairs to order. My BIL informed him he was told the downstairs bar didn't have the ingredients, and was sent up here. The bartender was annoyed and asked my BIL to go downstairs for 10 minutes and come back again to order. My BIL replied that he was happy to wait at the bar instead and took a seat. After a long while, the bartender curtly said that my BIL would have to pay for the drink up here, which my BIL of course agreed to. My BIL said it was very uncomfortable and the bartender was being rude (a couple sitting at the bar also mentioned this). We are guessing he was overwhelmed and didn't handle it well. He brought the drink downstairs, no problem. We were all sitting for a while and noticed that my BIL never received the beer he ordered from the waitress downstairs. And after about 45 minutes I asked about the food I had ordered (she hadn't checked in with us at all during that time, and I should mention it was not busy at all - several tables open). The waitress said she forgot to put it in. That was it. No offer to quickly put it in, no offer to comp a drink, no real apology. We asked for the bill and split it between two cards. When we got the receipts and cards back, my husband found they had given both him and his brother (the other payer) copies of my husband's receipt-so he assumed he was double charged. He went to the front to bring this to their attention and explained how he was upset by the poor service throughout the evening. He received a quick response that they had printed the receipt twice (didn't charge twice) and were short staffed that evening. We are all understanding people and my sister in law ran restaurants for years, we all had food service jobs and are sympathetic but really just disappointed in this place. I'm writing this review because the employees there just didn't seem to care about the issues we raised. They had an acoustic artist playing that evening who was phenomenal. If you go there on a different day with different staff, I'm sure you'd have a great time. But for the price and ambiance, we really expected better service.

They rearranged upstairs adding another pool table and some lounge couches. They have pushed all the tables and chairs against one shorter wall, in a line making it tight quarters and forcing you to sit next to strangers. There is no elbow room. It wasn't busy up there so I tried not to be bothered with this. Our waitress greeted us immediately. Brought our waters, menus and checked on us 3-4 times. She was great. Our food was NOT great let alone, ok! I ordered the shrimp scampi/risotto dish. It came with a side of garlic bread. My husband ordered the lemon capered chicken and my daughter the smash burger. My food and my husband's food tasted like I was eating CREAM OF SALT with garlic and the bread was even more salty. He was starving and just ate it, I only got through about half. It was so salty. My daughter said her burger was dry and tasted weird. She didn't finish it. Her fries were good. We didn't complain. We were hungry and uncomfortable being squished up like that. I just wanted to be done with the whole experience. I won't say that I'll never be back. I understand that chefs and restaurants staff are human and mistake like over salting a dish can happen. Prior to this past weekend, hadn't had a problem with food, staff or seating. However, I do hope someone in management/ownership sees my review so improvements/changes can be made. Not only with the dishes that are being served to paying customers but the seating arrangements upstairs. Those tables and chairs are far too squished together.

Verdict Bar & Grill in Oregon City is a really cool whiskey bar with a speakeasy-style atmosphere,…read moregreat drinks, and seriously impressive bartenders. I stopped in recently to pick up a to-go order and ended up sitting at the bar for a drink while I waited. I was greeted right away when I sat down and given a food menu. The place was completely slammed, but the two bartenders were absolutely dialed in. They were mixing signature cocktails, pouring wine, draft beer, and spirits nonstop while still checking in with guests. Watching them work was impressive -- the focus and efficiency looked more like professional mixologists than typical bartenders. The space itself has a great vibe. You enter from the 8th Street door and it feels like stepping into a hidden basement speakeasy. The interior is dimly lit with a huge illuminated whiskey wall. The bar is centered in the room with booths along the outside, making it a really cool date-night spot. While waiting for my food I ordered a Fort George City of Dreams Hazy IPA, which was cold and fantastic. As soon as I saw the cocktail menu though, I immediately regretted not ordering one of their house drinks -- the 8th Street Margarita looked especially good. I also noticed that all the whiskey drinks coming out had these beautiful crystal-clear 3" ice cubes, which is a great touch and shows they take their cocktails seriously. I originally came in because I've been ordering the Buffalo Mac & Cheese from their food cart about once a month for the last few years. Their Oregon City cart recently closed, so this was my first time getting it from the bar. My to-go order took about 30 minutes, which was totally understandable given how busy the place was. The staff stayed friendly and attentive the whole time. The Buffalo Mac & Cheese was still very tasty. The macaroni was great with a creamy cheese sauce and good buffalo flavor throughout. The chicken tasted like it may have been frozen at some point and was a little chewy compared to the crunchier chicken I remember from the food cart version, but overall the dish was still really good and something I'll definitely order again. Great atmosphere, skilled bartenders, solid food, and a really unique whiskey-bar vibe in Oregon City. Next time I come back I'm definitely sitting down and ordering one of those cocktails. Tip: Sit at the bar if you can -- watching the bartenders craft the drinks is half the experience.
