The temperature of the drink was absolutely perfect. There is plenty of room at this shop. The brick wall, wood floors, and darker room made the ambiance of a classic coffee shop. The owner really added to my experience with an interesting and intelligent conversation. I'll be back the next time I'm downtown. read more

Nonetheless, being the trooper I am, I drank down a shot of Beansmith's Alleycat espresso, a taster of the same in a regular brew method and a cold brew of the Grey Plume's Chiapas roast. How could I not? This place is pretty fantastic. (Yes I'm easily swayed by businesses that also act as purveyors of local art and allow dogs). WOW! What a find! A hidden treasure in mid-downtown Omaha! If it's out of your way, it's worth it! If you're in town, it's a must! And if you're from here, you're damn lucky! It's like walking into a speakeasy hidden in the modest façade of this stand-alone building on 16th St. When you enter, it feels like stepping onto a movie set of a vintage bar scene. The long elegant dark wood bar adorned with parallel round stools took me by surprise and right back to the historic coffee bars I visited around the Pantheon in Rome, Italy. Apparently this place doesn't exist anymore. The city of Omaha bought the building. When he was there, Greg provided a good atmosphere.

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for my morning coffee. We were headed into Omaha for the afternoon and so I had my wife pick a coffee shop in town on Yelp. She ended up choosing Howling hounds and so we put it into the GPS and headed over. Whenever we walked in we were greeted by the barista and then told it would take a little while because the five girls sitting at the bar hadn't ordered yet. It did take a little while before he got to us and he was certainly a talkative guy. They asked him about some stickers behind the counter and he launched into a respectful but still political talk. In between that and getting the drinks he also took the time to talk to my wife and myself, asking where we were from and other questions. I ultimately did ask him which brewery we should go to in Omaha and found his recommendation to be good. In any case on this day I decided to order a latte. While he was talking to the girls I heard him mention that all of his drinks had 3 shots and that he sourced his coffee from a place near Ithaca, NY. My drink was done pretty quickly and was handed over to me. It ended up tasting pretty good with the coffee tasting rich and the milk taking off any edge that it would have had. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. Our barista was certainly a friendly and interesting guy and the coffee was pretty good too. read more

I love visiting local coffee shops when away from home and this place did not disappoint. The gentleman behind the counter is one of the kindest, most welcoming people. A man came in who did not look well-off and was asking questions in Spanish. The barista went and greeted the man and offered him a cup of coffee and then realizing he didn't speak English, the barista asked his friend who did for help and they were able to communicate with the gentleman. It was so nice to see unabashed cordiality, no matter your walk of life. Coffee was excellent, the chocolate croissant was delicious and the ambience and staff made you want to hang out there all day. I highly recommend this lovely coffee shop. read more

Greg was very welcoming and informative. Learned about coffee... a friend of mine ordered Italiano and I ordered Breve and they were excellent. Creamy and perfect amount of acidity. A friend of mine suggested him to serve wine.... and he shared his grand idea about private club... hope he moves forward and serves wine soon. Love his personality. I was in town from a neighboring city for the weekend and discovered Howlin' Hounds with an out-of-state friend. Funny thing is, on a Sunday morning in a small, independently owned coffee shop, I ran into another friend from who lives in the same city as I (50 miles away) - he had specifically driven there because of the great coffee. A few years ago, one of the owners used a pejorative word of a racial group while carrying on a discussion with my friend. He acted like I didn't exist. People actions speaks loud. Since he felt comfortable using that word in front of me, I absolutely refuse to conduct any sort of business with this facility. Howlin' Hounds is a true coffee shop with quality tasting coffee and quality methods of brewing their coffee. I would not come here to look for a super sugary frappa-anything, but if you enjoy a good strong coffee, this is a great place. It reminds me a lot of the boutique coffee shops out of Chicago (like Bow Truss...even though it is not really boutique anymore). The atmosphere is very nice, friendly, and peaceful. This would be a great place to study, relax and read, or go on a coffee guy. When we visited, there was a floofy doggo inside, which I thought was very cool (+10 for dog friendly). My only critique is that I thought there would be some more breakfast goods. The Facebook page made it looked like there would be a few more substantial food items, and we came to eat breakfast there. However we quickly realized it was a true coffee shop. Best coffee in Omaha. Best dude runs the place. He's brilliant. Down to earth. Best service. Quarter meter off street for an hour. Vegan mocha 3.65 - made from cocoa, demara sugar and water. Not too sweet, not heavy, not chocolate milk. Perfect. Cappuccino 3.42 - light, milky, not bitter, balanced. Perfect. Latte w vanilla bean syrup 3.65 - fluffy, slightly sweet. He makes his own syrup from vanilla beans. My fave. Macchiato 3.47 - tiny strong cup of coffee. So balanced, not bitter. Great wake me up coffee. I don't even do coffee. Usually it hurts my stomach. Greg does something that makes it beautiful and smooth. I subbed almond milk and it was light and fluffy and wonderful. I live on the west coast and was disappointed in the coffee selection in Omaha. For starters, Greg makes the absolute best latte in town. If you want to have amazing coffee, this is the place to get it. Pour over, espresso, drip, cold-brew, whatever - you won't be disappointed. But Howlin' Hounds is more than just a coffee shop. It's a community hub. The second time I dropped in the owner remembered my name and introduced me to half a dozen other people in the space. And having now loitered regularly there for two years I can tell you that my experience isn't unique. Greg engages with all his customers on a fundamentally human level and gets to know them. And in turn you get to know everybody else who wanders into his coffee shop / art gallery / great place to hang out. Howlin' Hounds is a throwback to the kind of local business your grandpa went to - where a line wasn't a bad thing but an opportunity to interact with other human beings - where time is spent making a quality product as well as a one-to-one relationship with a business owner. And in my book, that's how it should be. Greg's shop is my shop and always will be so long as I continue to live in Omaha.
