The best charsiu I've ever had. I usually get the half fat/lean and it's perfect. The taste, the perfect ratio of meat and fat, so good! I love the burnt tips of the charsiu, my favorite bite. I've been here for dinner and their dishes are actually pretty good. Really liked their walnut shrimp, the salt and pepper pork chop and the stir fry squid dish (see picture). The restaurant interior is quiet outdated, but the food is good. I haven't tried their dimsum, so I cannot judge. Definitely give their charsiu a try (the half fat/lean cut). I highly recommend it and you'll not be disappointed. read more

I don't often come to this spot for anything but we came by two times recently out of convenience to get roast pork. I guess for spots like this, you really need to know the people working their otherwise you'd get whatever they give. They cut the pieces so big that when we get home, we'd still have to cut it in half so it's easier to eat. The taste itself is decent but otherwise I wouldnt come back here. They also made bak tong go which I think they do well in. Most places cant get the texture right but they do. At $4 a box thats only 75% full, I wouldnt complain because its closest to what I had growing up. read more

I've dined here a couple of times with my in laws for various occasions. Recently my husband and I got takeout from them too. Overall, their food is good and prices are reasonable as well. We ordered the whole garlic chicken and it was priced at $35 - that's pretty good. The half chicken was $18. The chicken dish was okay; the chicken meat seemed a bit dry and could been better. It tasted better the next day versus the the day we got it. The service was good. The ambiance at the restaurant is nice whenever we dined in. read more

Never evvvvvvver knew this restaurant existed on Bay Parkway and, quite frankly, probably would have never visited this restaurant unless my family recommended it. Most of the dim sum action happens on 86th Street in Bensonhurst, so it was a nice change to visit Howong. My family and I came here for dim sum on a Sunday late morning/early afternoon and, surprisingly, the restaurant actually wasn't very crowded. Not sure if it was because of the location of the restaurant, but I assume many locals know about them since they have been around for a while, apparently. Our family was able to secure a large private room in the back, which was awesome. We didn't have to worry about any social distancing during our time here so that was a relief. During the pandemic, the typical dim sum carts have pretty much gone by the wayside. The old dim sum experience has been vanquished and has been replaced by a more contemporary way of ordering food, which is to tell the waiter what you want and they will bring it. Although the experience of dim sum has changed here, like other restaurants, the food here was decent. I won't comment on every single dim sum dish we ordered, but the dim sum was all on level with other dim sum restaurants I've been to in the past. On a side note, our table also ordered a pan fried noodle and THAT was delicious. I've had my fair share of pan fried noodles in the past and the noodles were extra crispy, which was a major plus! Nothing else really stood out, but it was a solid restaurant. It felt a bit out of the way because it was deeper into Bay Parkway, but if you live in the area, it's a great spot to get some dim sum. read more

You can say they must've signed a pretty hefty lease or maybe because their customers are loyal or perhaps there's just no other place to get Cantonese food but Howong is here to stay, and I'm kind of glad they are because I really can use some dimsum now and then. Their items are not the best out there and prices often make you roll your eyes but what can you do? I would not be paying an arm and a leg just to get the meats that are hung by the window because they legitimately are the only one I've seen in my entire life where they sell poultry by the pound instead of half vs full bird. There were a good number of tables, some of which could accommodate larger parties. Given that we arrived some time past noon, there were limited dim sum options and dim sum carts were no longer in use. However, we were still able to secure an order of chicken feet and cilantro rice noodles. We also ordered a rice dish with barbecued pork and a hot and sour soup. The food was good and the two of us felt content with the amount that we ordered. The barbecued pork was flavorful and tasty in combination with the veggies and rice that it came with. The hot and sour soup was more sour than spicy, which seems to be a common trend at most restaurants that offer it, but still enjoyable. read more

This place has been here since I was born, under different names and owners of course. This restaurant has survived the pandemic which caused other competitors to shut their doors. I would say they serve authentic Chinese dishes in large family style portions. My boyfriends family loves to host dinners here and all the dishes they order are delicious. I recommend getting the shrimp, pork chop, fish soup, and fried rice. The waiters were super attentive, always ready to swap your plate for a clean one, bringing new bottles of soda / alcohol. I also love their dessert, they bring sliced fruit and tong sui! In terms of the area, I love the neighborhood and never had issues finding parking. Would highly advise to avoid this restaurant due to dishonest business practices. I stopped by with my mom last Saturday to buy crispy roast pork. The total came out to $33. My mom decided to pay with credit card and they advised they would charge tax, fine. The receipt came out to $37.50? I thought that was a little odd so I asked the lady why is it so much? She said tax is 8.875%. That should come out to $2.92. They just tack on extra fees and she kept mumbling about the credit card sign in front. I read the sign but it doesn't state anything about extra credit card fees. Beware of the shady ladies who work the register! They are scammers. Not about the $1 but about the principle. I have ordered here for takeout a handful of times and the food served is not very fresh past noon. I ordered their roast pork noodle soup and the soup is extremely fatty and did not sit well with my stomach. Their pork and duck rice plates also lack enough meat, and is just chewy and fatty pieces. They pack the broth separate for soups which is nice but the only good thing I've observed thus far from this place. The interior looks old and outdated and quite dusty. The front of house people barely speaks english which isn't a huge deal breaker but they're very rude on the phone when you try to order for pick up. I've definitely written a review for this place before, but now they've changed names ... still the same food/servers, though! I've been going here regularly for the past 15 years because it's right by my house and it's really convenient for my family to go to. We've had their dim sum, $5 rice boxes for take-out and dinners. I LOVE their $5 rice box take-outs; it's hard to imagine a cheaper, quicker, more satisfying AND relatively healthy meal. I usually get this to share with my mom ($2.50 per person :O) on hot summer days when we don't feel like cooking. I especially love their fish + puffy tofu one, but I also like their house special, tofu with broccoli and beef with broccoli. All very classic and tasty. Their dim sum is not bad (they also do takeout dim sum); it doesn't offer as much diversity and the food isn't as stunning as the well-known places in Brooklyn Chinatown, but it's definitely satisfying for a craving. I don't eat much anyway, so I'm pretty happy after some shu mai and cheung fun. I'm mainly writing this review, though, because Yelp reminded me after I checked in here for a LNY dinner last night. I was pretty shocked that my mom was able to get a tentative reservation - they told her to come around 8:30pm when she checked in with them the day before - and we didn't have to wait at all. :D A lot of the traditional LNY stuff was out already, but we still ordered a good amount: soup, lobster, dou miao, shrimp with candied walnuts, steamed fish and honey and garlic crispy chicken. To be honest, if you don't judge the interior or how dated their furnitures and carpet are... this place is definitely a 4. But if you're big on that (and also cleanliness), then your rating would be different from mines. We just started coming here not too long ago for family dinners, and the reason why we keep coming back is clear. The food is delicious. It's not your typical oily or salty Chinese food. Their eel rice is something we get all the time. It's flavorful and filled with chunks of eel. They also offer the bottom of the rice pot for you after they serve you all the rice. The crunch of this bottom rice is a delight. My next favorite dish is their short ribs. Chinese restaurants generally have trouble understanding the medium-rare request, but Ho Wong is on top of their game here. It's a solid dish! read more

I love this place. But I've never eaten the restaurant's food alone. Let me explain. Howong Seafood is great for large party dinners and they are one of the few restaurants that allows you to bring in your own seafood. So for a few company parties, my coworkers bought fresh seafood from 8th avenue Chinatown. The restaurant will clean and cook the seafood for you. To compensate them for using their kitchen and chef, we had to order 5-7 large restaurant dishes plus pay a large tip. FOOD All of the food was delicious, fresh and amazing. We've had the gigantic steamed oysters with XO sauce, Cantonese style lobsters, Alaskan King crab legs, and Alaskan king crab head cooked with glass noodles. We devoured crispy creamy Mayo shrimp with crunchy walnuts, crispy Cantonese fried chicken, sautéed spare ribs with bean curd, and wok fried tender beef cubes with pepper and onions. We picked at the steamed Shanghai bok choy with pork bones. On another occasion we had the steamed steamed Dungeness crab, scallops on a shell, salmon sashimi, sashimi Geoduck, steamed oysters with black bean sauce, Cantonese fried lobster, and sweet and sour pork chops. All the dishes were delicious. My favorites were the Alaskan King Crab and steamed oyster. The Alaskan King crab head was so sweet and briny and the al dente glass noodles soaked up all the crab juices. I loved it. So did the 7 year old next to me that was licking her plate. I am a huge fan of the steamed King crab legs in garlic sauce. They taste so soft, sweet and tender compared to the frozen rubbery King Crab legs from the AYCE buffets. And the plump meaty steamed oysters with black bean sauce was wonderful. I had mine and was greedily eyeing a leftover oyster. Some of these dishes were some of the best Chinese banquet style seafood dishes that I've ever had. Service was the best that I've ever had in a Chinese restaurant. The servers gave us individual plates for all the lobster and scallop shells. They changed the plates very frequently and gave us warm hand towels to wipe our hands. There was no attitude. Me and my husband absolutely in love with the hinese food in this restaurant. There is very tasty food and diverse menu. My passion is seafood, and all seafood dishes here are absolutely amazing. We live nearby, so it's a convenient place to go. We come here a couple times a month, and always absolutely satisfied. It is very nice, that they always give you some tea, water and snacks before order, and then, when you are waiting for receipt, they bring you fruits and hinese fortune cookies :) But I give 4/5 stars because of unattractive interior with this pink tablecloth and uncomfortable chairs.. Despite the fact that it is Mother's Day, this place was very poorly serviced! Waiters are inattentive, didn't give us a menu when we were seated, and when our order was placed, the food did not arrive for over an hour and change. When we asked about the food, they told us we would get it really soon but no food came. Other tables who came way after us got their food before us. We no longer wanted to eat at the restaurant and we asked for the check. That was when they decided to try to get us our food in a speedier manner. However, the "speedier service" was almost all incorrect and we had to send the incorrect food to get the correct order. By this time, we were already infuriated with the service. The restaurant is spacious with two floors, but it's a very basic Chinese restaurant with that grungy old time feel. Food is never mind blowing, just mediocre enough to meet standards. A typical favorite dim sum option, the shrimp dumpling, is something we've learned to simply avoid here for the lack of fresh tasting shrimp. But for convenience's sake, it suffices for dim sum, take out or a place to have a family dinner/banquet that's nearby, keeping in mind that food and service can be a hit or a miss particularly during busy holiday times. I can back here after years of not going (for no real reason other than I just don't live anywhere near) and was delighted to see they not only did some renovations but their food quality has improved! Not that it was ever bad, I've been coming here for years and it was always 'good enough.' Now I'll go ahead and say the dim sum is great - there's a larger variety than I've seen from here in a while and they took the cilantro out all of their rice rolls which is a plus for me as I hate cilantro. From the first time I came to New York twenty years ago to now, Howong has been the most incredible Chinese seafood restaurant that I've ever eaten at. Not only is the place beautiful in its decoration and design, but the food is delicious, expertly made, and very cost-effective as well. The owners welcomed me and my family with open arms, and made us feel super comfortable and attended to while we were there. Howong's hospitality and professionalism is unmatched throughout all of NYC. For good prices, our table was piled high with the best dishes made with the best quality ingredients and care. I used to come here often over 10 years ago, but we have stopped coming cuz food and service has gone way down hill. Very rarely I would come for family dinner, but today was an extremely cold day and we were lazy, so decided to come here and highly regret it. Food is still mediocre. Service is even worse. The waiter we had was horrible. He came to take our order. We ordered one dish as an appetizer. Then the guy says " I'll put this order in for now" and proceeds to leave our table to put the order in even though we kept telling him we were Ready to order everything else. He just ignored our request and left our table and came back. After we ordered everything, our food comes and there were 2 mistakes. First, we ordered fried squid. Instead of giving us fried squid, they served us a combination dish of fried squid and scallops, which is $5 more expensive. This is NOT the first time he made this same mistake. The last time we ate there, he did the same thing to our order. So we told him they served the wrong thing, and he said he'll leave the dish on our table and just charge us for the fried squid dish. Second, we ordered a whole chicken, but they only served us half a chicken. So we told the waiter to make sure they only charge us half a chicken. The bill comes and the chicken was priced correctly but they charged us for the expensive combo fried squid/scallop dish instead of just fried squid. So we had to tell them to fix it again. Unfortunately, I had to deduct a star based on the service. When I was waiting in line, I had several waiters/waitresses push me out the way. Their hands were clearly covered in food/oil/substances and they would use their hands to push me. This meant that whatever their hands had, would be on my clothes. This is completely unacceptable. This old school traditional Cantonese restaurant is a must for people who love traditional seafood dishes. Steamed oysters with black beans and XO sauce was amazingly fresh and meaty. Jellyfish was crispy and refreshing with preserved vegetables. Grilled beef ribs were finger licking good. Steam lobster was fresh and sweet and the chef turned the lobster heads into one of the best tasting lobster congee. Service was great, I highly recommended this great restaurant. read more

We only come back for convenience but going forward, even if we really want some BBQ meats that day and Ho Wong is around, we will not bat another eye and just turn the other way. Like most Chinese restaurants, service is not the best. Nobody was there to seat us when we entered the restaurant.
