I brought my vehicle to this mechanic expecting professional service, but unfortunately my experience was extremely disappointing. My vehicle was returned with scratches/damage that was not there beforehand, and when I brought it to their attention, accountability and customer service were lacking. I also requested to see camera footage regarding the incident and was told it was "too much footage to go through," which was frustrating and unhelpful. When I told him I could provide the exact date and time the car was dropped off, he still refused to show the footage. If he's innocent, showing the video shouldn't be an issue, especially since the car had no scratches when it was loaded onto the tow truck. When we called back to try to figure out the situation, he ignored us and refused to take our calls, even after we already paid him. On top of that, their prices are extremely overpriced for the level of service provided. I understand accidents can happen, but honesty, communication, and taking responsibility go a long way. Instead, I was left feeling dismissed and forced to deal with the damage on my own. I would recommend taking detailed photos of your vehicle before leaving it here. read more

I was towed here after my car decided to die on Route 7. Turns out the engine oil cooler failed. They diagnosed the problem, ordered the part, and I had the car back in 48 hours. That might seem like a lot but the dealer said it could be a week. The Buick Encore seems to have this particular problem due to the design of this part. Ugh. Anyway, they were honest. I am picky about mechanics in Jersey because most have jacked up prices, so I came because of the positive reviews and it is very close to transportation at Journal Square. I am glad I did. I had my own parts and just needed the labor to get my brake pads changed ($80), front rotors replaced ($50), and door handle replaced ($50). The prices arent as low as Bronx prices but close enough and very reasonable. Edgar and his son were very honest in their evaluations and pricing and openly admitted they werent experienced at exhaust and recommended I do that work elsewhere. They actually even did one minor repair for free since it only took a few minutes. Fair and good pricing convenient location, polite and nice staff. This is my new go to local mechanic, I highly recommend. Nasty guy with attitude who never helps and is ready to turn you away. He will give you every excuse and tell you what he's working on with other people cars. Check engine light was on. I made the mistake of telling Westside Tire & Auto (who I used to go to) that the car had recently gone over a low divider and through water because I'd gotten caught in a storm. Gino at WSTA told me that they needed to charge me $1300+ to replace my charcoal cannister and purge valve. That sounded steep, so I went to Hoyos. Guy was super-friendly and explained that, based on the error message and what he observed, I only needed the cap replaced, which wound up costing about $380. When I told him about the divider and the water, he said there was no physical damage to my undercarriage and that the parts in question shouldn't get flooded because they're sealed off. Even if Hoyos had to replace the cannister, etc. he was only going to charge me $900...$400 less than Westside. I'll stick with Hoyos from now on. read more

What goes around comes around! I recently took my car to Hoyos Auto Repair and inquired about fixing an issue with my heat/AC panel. I spoke with the owner in person, he assessed the situation and said he would need to take a deeper look and then would call me back with a quote. A few hours later I received a call from the owner with a quote for the job. I agreed to the initial quote given and was told it would take 24-48 hours to complete the job. The next day I received a call from the owner, telling me that the part he ordered was not all that was needed and that it was going to cost more $$ to fix the issue. I didn't get a good feeling about the situation and told him I did not accept the new quote and would not like to move forward with the job. He then responded by saying that I would still need to pay him for the labor because he "opened up the car", I said, "no", because the car was not fixed and the quote was based upon the vehicle being fix. I picked up my vehicle a few hours later. A week later I took my vehicle to another local mechanic, when he opened up the car to fix the same issue he informed me that parts were missing and a line had been intentionally cut! Clearly it doesn't take an expert to conclude that the owner of Hoyos Auto Repair took some retaliation action, when I did not agree to pay for labor when the job was not completed in full. Bottom line, these people are untrustworthy and unethical. Don't take your vehicle here! read more

I went in for an oil change, as my last one was in early January but I was out of town a lot so only did 3,000 miles with my car. The car uses synthetic oil. I never get a receipt nor is there any confirmation that the oil change was actually done. When I got home I checked & could see that the other fluids had not been capped off even though I asked & the owner said yes, they were. He hadn't changed the windshield sticker so I went back in and asked him to do that. The oil filter has a 9/2/2022 date stamped on it. I'm annoyed at myself that I didn't mark the oil filter with some nail polish. The owner is a nice guy & Hoyos is so convenient but I think it's time to go elsewhere. I paid $80 cash. read more

Edgar Hoyos is like the Colombian version of Puddy from Seinfeld; anywhere else you go it's $500 more. He's trustworthy and doesn't screw you over which is rare and super important because if you're like me, clueless, it's easy to be taken advantage of. We used to go to Pep Boys out of pure convenience and after flushing so much money down the drain, we have finally found mechanic nirvana. Hoyos is definitely the best mechanic around. read more

I fear mechanics more then I fear the dentist, but a little less then I fear the IRS*. That's #2 on the fear scale for me. So when I saw some Yelpers I know review Hoyos, I knew I had to get my car there ASAP. I started by just dipping my toe in and getting an oil change. $25 is very reasonable, cheaper than I've been getting at Zap Lube. Plus Zap Lube has been pressuring me to get a transmission flush (for like $350+) and I wasn't sure I needed it because I don't drive much and am not looking to keep this car for another 5 years. David said I didn't need the flush as long as I change the oil every 3 months (see you in April Hoyos) and they also fixed my trunk which hasn't reliably latched closed in YEARS. For an additional $30. I'm a fan. I'll be back soon for a full car diagnostic. *I don't fear the IRS for a specific reason. It's just an inherent fear. I'm working on it and will review my new CPA soon. read more

They're open from 8 AM to 6 PM on Monday through Friday, and I'm not sure about Saturday and Sunday, but you can ask them. These dudes rock!!! My check engine light came on last week, and I brought it to Pep Boys for a diagnosis. I won't go into the details of what was wrong with my 10 year old car, however Pep Boys quoted me at $1250 for the whole shebang. Not wanting to spend that much, I called around to all my boys in JC, hoping that somebody new a good "mom & pop" auto body shop. Sure enough, my man Kenny D put me up on Hoyos. They're super honest, and do quality work. Edgar had his team diagnos my issues (which ended up being the same diagnosis I got at Pep Boys), but afterwards, he quoted me nearly $500 less than the faceless corporation did. I gladly accepted this. I left the car with them overnight. By end of business the next day, all the repairs were done. They showed me all the new parts that were installed, with the warranty papers that they got from the actual dealership. Edgar took me for a test drive around the block, just to ensure I was satisfied. He even gave me 2 quarts of oil, just because. I've been in JC for nearly a decade now. If only I had learned about this place earlier. They clearly do great, and cheap, work, because during the minutes that I spent standing in their lot, waiting on my car, about a dozen customers came in and out. Everybody seemed to know Edgar. Now, I will neither recommend this place to my friends nor will I bring my vehicle to this establishment. The mechanics here are not knowledgeable in diagnosing or remedying technical issues with your automobile. Instead, they attempt to nickel and dime you into purchasing unnecessary parts or making repairs that, in the long run, do not solve the problem. A word of advice...caveat emptor or buyer beware. If you want a knowledgeable and honest mechanic then this place is NOT it. I would highly recommend other establishments in Jersey City instead. read more

A good solid neighborhood mechanic. He'll do what needs to be done as inexpensively and well as possible. I have an '02 vw and he's kept me rolling very well and fairly when I've needed repairs. I live almost across the street and they're always busy, I've seen everything from newish Range Rovers and bmw's to a thirty year old chevy in his garage. When it makes more sense to do something like an alignment or get tires elsewhere he'll let you know that. On more than one occasion he's diagnosed my car or hooked it up to the computer for free, keep in mind I'm a repeat customer and he knows I'll be back. Wow, its great to see so many awesome reviews. I have fixed my car in the past by these guys and like in my previous review I mentioned may be because they are conveniently located in jersey city and have a lot of work they have become loose with the quality of work that they deliver. This time again I was unfortunate to deal with Edgar's son Mr. Juan. I scheduled a used car inspection which I was planning to buy with absolutely clean car fax and service history with Honda dealership until the owner wanted to sell the car off. I got it to Hoyos, Mr. Juan told me to leave the car with him for an hour. He called me back stating there are a few issues with the car but nothing major. When I reached the place he stated that there are 4 things that are wrong with this car namely, 2 rear differential, 2 front struts assemble, a/c compressor and TPMS totaling the $$ value to an astonishing $1987. I was shocked to the core, I do not understand how is this expense a minor one. He charged me $60 in cash for this transaction without a receipt. Anyway, I thought I should get the vehicle inspected by another mechanic just to double check. The other mechanic who is a friend of a friend and has his own place in North jersey quoted me $49+tax for the inspection. I was like , "thats fine, its better to double check". this guy inspected my vehicle in front of me in depth and explained each and every detail about the check up including a test ride on the highway. To my surprise, this mechanic was like, "there is nothing wrong with the car, its a 2010 Honda CRV with one of the best on road reliability , your car just needs TPMS for now, nothing else". It was unbelievable to me, I pinched myself. To top it up even after spending so much time he said, don't worry about the payment there is nothing wrong, go ahead buy the car. He did not even charge me a penny. This is one of my luckiest days I guess!! I am deeply hurt by the kind of work people do just to make cash out there. I had my my Honda Civic taken to Hoyos " and repaired here for an cracked radiator which was replaced, the repair was done well, the only issue I have is the AC was not blowing out enough cold air this was about 3 years ago maybe it needs more Freon? and I was charged about $350 for radiator,Freon and labor and I thinking about bringing my car back to do work on my power steering. read more

Edgar Hoyos is an honest, productive mechanic. For some jobs, he'll send you pictures and photos of your old parts and him putting in new ones. He does everything he can to ensure that you know you're getting value. I recently got my girlfriend's 2004 Honda Civic serviced for $1097 after tax. It sounds high, but he did the following: - Timing belt and water pump change with front seals - 100K mile service -new spark plugs, fluid changes, the works - Oil change - New bulger - New rear suspension Try getting that much value at the dealership. I recently took my 2010 Toyota Corolla in for maintenance because it was making a sound. They carefully diagnosed the issue, communicated a low price that was $ 200 and promptly fixed the issue. I have never been ripped off here and I will only have my car repaired here. I once made the mistake of having my car served at a different place because I moved out of Jersey City. The most trustworthy mechanic I've ever met!!! Amazing value and great customer service. Edger and his son are very nice and honest. I took my car to the dealer for an oil change (had coupon) as usual they gave me a list of work that is needed and was going to cost us thousands$$$$. Yelp brought me to Hoyos auto and thank God i was lucky to meet someone honest that only repairs what is needed with a very reasonable price. Most of the recommendation from the dealer are not needed at all. Edgar promised he'll get the car ready within 1 day and he delivered on his promise. I don't know much about cars but I like to think I know quite a bit about people. These are guys I feel comfortable trusting. This rating is not based upon service, rather lack of service / customer service. 6PM on Wednesday, I got home from work and barely made it into my parking space b/c my car was bogging so much. I quickly Yelped this place, called and was told that I could leave my car overnight and place the keys in the box. Thursday When I didn't hear from them by 11AM, I gave them a call. They said they saw my car outside and would give me a call back when they had a chance to look at it. 5PM: Having not heard anything from them, I called again. He said the car ran fine and he didn't see an issue with it. I explained that I had tightened a wire leading to one of the spark plugs & that's how I was able to make it to the shop. He thanked me for the additional info (which I would have given him had he called me) and told me he'd pull it in the bay, check it out again and give me a call. I told him that I was supposed to drive to work the next day so I needed my car. 6PM: I called and no one answered. Granted, the place closes at 6 so I stayed patient Friday 8:30AM: I gave them a half hour after they opened in hopes that I would hear from them first. Surprise, surprise - I didn't. Since no one answered, I left a voicemail asking for an update 9AM: Since no one called back, I left another voicemail, telling them I would like to come pick up my car. 10:10AM: as I'm 1 minute away from Hoyos, I get a phone call. I ignore it b/c I'm pulling up. The gentleman proceeds to tell me that my wires and spark plugs needed a complete replacement as they were corroded and shot, so he recommended a tune-up (my last tune up was 9 months/8K miles ago) ... but wait, I thought there was nothing wrong with my car? read more

I went to hoyos based on all these yelp reviews and I must say I was not disappointed. My friend gave me a dodge stratus RT a couple of months ago and it in pretty bad shape. The muffler was loud, the brakes, the shocks, the rotors, etc. The check engine light was also on. I told him I want to fix the car little by little with the muffler , catalytic converter and the check engine light first. The check engine light was the gas cap and also my gas pump. It took him about three hours before he called me to pick up my car. All that costed 480 which I know is way cheaper than going to pep boys. Definitely coming back to fix the rest of my car. I strongly recommend that repair your cars here, no matter what problem you have on your vehicle,because the service is pretty good!!Fast, Cheap, and High Quality parts. I have a 07 BMW, just change the front breaking pad, breaking disc, and sensor, it only cost me 280, which if you change it in dealership will cost 600 more, and the quality is no difference with OEM part. I've been using Hoyos for a few years now for regular maintenance. I'm pretty disappointed after my last couple of visits. We don't drive much at all (3K miles/year at most) and parts that should last 30,000 miles are lasting us a year before needing replacement. I think Edgar's son Johann is succeeding him in the business because I see him less and less. If that's the case, those are some big shoes to fill.
