We ate at the Hungry Trout earlier in the week during a recent vacation to the Lake Placid area, and had such a nice experience, that we thought we would finish the trip on our final evening at McDougalls Pub, sitting outside on their porch. We got there right at 4pm and started with beers (they don't serve food until 5pm). Once we could order off the menu, we decided icy margaritas were in order -- and what goes better with margaritas than seafood and wings?? So we ordered Buffalo wings and fried calamari. our server was named Sage, and just couldn't have been sweeter or more attentive. We're so glad we were able to include meals at both sides of the establishment -- Hungry Trout and McDougalls Pub -- while in the Placid area. We hope you do, too! read more

It was a beautiful night so we drove to Wilmington for dinner with the dog in tow. We called ahead and asked if dogs were allowed at the outside seating. We were relatively early and got a great table on the patio with moderate sun. Our view of the rolling river and mountains added to our yummy meal. My husband had the Fish and Chips minus the chips substituting a side Caesar salad. I had the mild chicken wings. Both were delicious! I drank a Tito's Mule and was very happy Water was brought for the dog and a whiskey for my husband. They were happy too! read more

We had a great meal at R.F McDougalls Pub. We are staying at The Hungry Trout and were in the mood for some appetizers and drinks. They let us know up front that the kitchen was busy and it might take longer, but we didn't feel as though we waited that long. We got quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, poutine, and the pepperoni pizza. Everything was reasonable priced and good. I would recommend this pub for anyone who is in town and in the mood for some drinks and bar food. read more

Decent restaurant located near the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA and nearby Flume Trails. A little deceiving because there are two restaurants on this property, one that appeared more fine dining and then R.F. McDougalls Pub... More of the pub fare/average run of the mill restaurant and since we were coming from camping/hiking, we opted for the pub - a good choice indeed. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a Yelp check-in offer for a free pint of beer which I gladly redeemed for my bro bear. I ordered the Fish Taco Trio and the Pub Steak. The fish tacos were a little hit or miss, not quite up to par but not disgusting by any means. I think my pub steak just over powered my tastebuds with the flavorful spices and perfect cook (medium rare). The steak was served with green beans and fries. I would highly recommend this dish over the much, much, much more expensive steak option. The portion size was just right for me (and I LOVE steak). Service was average as it almost seemed as though the wait staff was taking care of the fine dining upstairs in addition to the pub downstairs? I hope not. The Hungry Trout restaurant has a good reputation so we decided to try McDougalls Pub, situated under the HT (and offered both menus). We were fortunate to get a seat on the deck outside overlooking the waterfalls! This was a great location to sit with an amazing view. Our visit started with drinks, they had Stella on Tap, and we were impressed they were actually served in Stella Chalices, which often doesn't happen. We even commented to our waitress how nice this was, but were surprised our next round was served in an everyday pint glass??? I'm not a snob, but did they only have 2 chalices? (especially how we made a big deal to our waitress about this!). We decided to order from the pub menu. Starting with the pretzel logs and mustard, this was ok, nothing special. Entrees tried were the Adirondack burger and a chicken sandwich. One nice thing is that for any of their burgers, a chicken breast can be substituted. The burger was served with homemade potato chips and the chicken sandwich with French fries. Overall, both sandwiches were OK, but nothing popped with flavor. I guess we could call it standard pub food. Throughout our visit we attempted to engage our waitress, we will call her "D", regarding menu items, but overall her demeanor and treatment was cold and didn't like being bothered. This was one thing that was consistent throughout our visit not matter how we complemented or thanked, we got the feeling we were inconveniencing her just being there. While the location is beautiful, poor customer service sets the tone for a dining experience. read more

charming and friendly servers, horrible service ordered onion soup and a salad for dinner, while my wife ordered trout. Server offered to bring out the soup first and the salad with my wife's entre (perfect). Also ordered iced tea. My wife's entre shows up with my salad. I remind the server of the soup. "Sorry, I'll get it". Ten minutes goes by, another server, "opps, sorry, the kitchen forgot so they're making it". Halfway through dinner I just ask to cancel the soup, but can I get a refill on the iced tea. Twenty minutes later and at least four trips by the table, still no iced tea. Beyond bad. The food is probably great, but they don't bring it to your table........just excuses. Never saw the soup, never saw a refill on the iced tea, never saw a server again until the check. This was one of our go to places to eat in the Adirondacks. Had to wait forever for someone to come and take our drink order. Two waitresses and one bartender. The wait staff was handling indoor and outdoor tables. Took forever to get our food. My husband had a margarita that arrived with two fruit flies doing the backstroke. Waited forever for the to go boxes and the bill while people were lined up for tables. The bartender was talking to people at the bar while the waitresses poured the beers for their tables. Bartender kept disappearing also. Bartender dropped a beverage in the dining area that splattered a lady. She picked up the glass and went back to the bar. No apology or cleanup. Happy slipping!! We were at this restaurant for well over two hours which was ridiculous. Food was good but we probably won't be back. read more

Definitely one of the better meals of our trip. While we were waiting for our outdoor table, we drank beers on their terrace overlooking the river. The host and our server were very accommodating throughout our meal. You can't go wrong with any of the choices on the menu here, as our entire group of six was raving about how good the food was. Good reliable pub food. We ate here two nights in a row and the service and food were just great. The first night I ordered the Whisky Peppercorn Burger. It didn't have enough whiskey or peppercorn, and it seemed like it might have been a frozen burger since it was almost too perfectly shaped and did not have enough flavor. It was good, but not great. Four stars, not five. The second night I ordered the Gorgonzola Tenderloin Tips. They were very good, cooked just right, and had good flavor. The presentation was sloppy but the taste was right on. Stayed in Wilmington for the night after a long day of skiing. Located this place on Yelp and it did not disappoint! Menu had something to offer for each of us in the family (2 adults 2 kids). Tap list was perfect for what we were looking for to rehydrate. We started with the Bavarian pretzels and they were amazing. I went with the pub steak with the peppercorn sauce on top and wow, great flavor and it was cooked perfect to my liking. Wife had the calamari for her meal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Oldest son went with a bacon burger and devoured it. Youngest had the chicken finger kids meal. Felt the kids mea was a little pricy (12.99) considering drink not included. Had dinner here tonight with my wife, and we were both pleasantly surprised. The food was FAR better than what some of the reviews led me to believe we would be expecting and the service was great. I had the venison, and It was perfectly prepared. I haven't had venison prepared that well in a very long time. The drinks were good, the service was prompt, and the desert was the icing on the cake. Upon the snow tipped mountain tops on the main road (possibly the only road, kidding there's other roads) sits R.F. McDougalls Pub, which is also connected to the classier establishment the Hungry Trout. I have been vacationing in Lake Placid for years and have driven by this place for...you guessed it, years. However this time I will not be denied. The space is quaint, the service is...serviceable and everyone was kind. The food here was fantastic. I recommend getting the pub steak, it was FANTASTIC. Very bland.- no bread or salad or side dish with it. The chicken sandwich was grilled but appeared gray. With the short staffing, I chose not to make an issue. The poor young man was running from table to table. We were very disappointed in the beer/wine list. Said draft and brought a can with a non-chilled cup. Everything seemed very rushed. Great view- but the parking lot wraps around. We weren't pleased with the portion sizes for the outrageous prices. This place tries to look "upscale" but I felt like I was at an overpriced Applebees. When I came here with my fiance, we were a part of a Saturday night dinner rush during our most recent stay in Lake Placid. Six months ago we ate at The Hungry Trout upstairs. I loved The Hungry Trout, but R F McDougall's paled in comparison. I believe both restaurants operate out of the same kitchen, which really made this dinner unbelievable. You can actually order off of The Hungry Trout's menu if you'd like, and that's nice because the two menus are very difference. I ordered the Fish and Chips, because it smelled awesome when I walked in. If the fish was fresh, I'm curious to find out how mine managed to border on frozen in the center. That being said, the parts of the fish that were cooked were awesome, and the fries that it came with were good, too. The tarter sauce was good, and the cole slaw was different in a very good way. The dining room isn't huge, but big enough that our two servers were stretched thin throughout our stay. Our server did a good enough job, but I was left waiting longer than I'd like to get a refill. The walls are covered in fishing signs and it's a really cozy/fun atmosphere. It's pretty loud, though, and while it's not the loudest restaurant I've been in, it's hard to carry on a conversation without shouting over everyone else trying to shout in order to have their own conversation. I didn't hate this place, but I definitely wouldn't give them another chance unless it were earlier in the evening or a weekday. read more

We came to this place based on past reviews. We were seated in the bar upstairs to wait for. Table and we're seated within a timely fashion. The waitress poured us room temperature water without ice. I noticed mostly everyone's glass in the dining room had ice was more shocked when the waitress topped off my glass with more room temperature water. Garlic Parmesan wings came out first, which in the dim lighting, appeared undercooked. Wings were not as crispy as I personally prefer. Our burgers then came out. Mine seemed as if it had juts come off the grill however my girlfriend's was just barely warm and her fries were cold. We had a great dinner here just the other night Friday. We went to Whiteface and stopped here on the way home. We sat outside on the back porch and enjoyed the view. I have the brie & mushroom soup it was wonderful I could have had another crock of that for sure. My mom & Sister got the Gorgonzola steak tips and they really enjoyed their food. My son & I split the cowboy steak and enjoyed it vety much. Service was very quick & friendly. After the sun set it got chilly. The staff provided us with blankets. In addition they started up the outside fireplaces it was super cozy. We will come back again when in the area. read more

Now the negative, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone the food was sub par at best. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my girlfriend had a whiskey peppercorn burger both were served with cold not even fresh kettle chips and pickle and coleslaw. For the quality of the food $13.99 each the food should have been fresh or stood out or something . There wasn't much open and we needed to eat. Came up to lake placid for New Years with two other couples and my fiancé. My good friend has a house in the area and recommended this place. We had a blast every night, and the bartender Jim made our New Years so awesome, we came back the next the next three nights too. It wasn't slammed, but we were out to enjoy one another's company. But it wouldn't have been as awesome without Jim. Also- great Irish coffees! We didn't eat here because we had made plans each day, but the food looked awesome too.
