4th of July we had done a race on Whiteface Mountain. We tried to get food in Lake Placid, but there was a parade there and it was impossible to park. On our way back to the house we rented we decided to try and score a table at The Hungry Trout even though there was a sign, reservations only. The staff were so sweet and squeezed us in. We used to love this place but since they closed the tavern it's been a disappointment. This year we tried to make reservations by phone and email and their website (which is only making reservations in 2022), but no one ever responded to us. And of course walking in only gave us the response of "we only seat reservations." Sad. The patio on the river and great fish fry were such a draw. read more

This place was wonderful! To start we both had a "hot & dirty" martini--ice cold martini with blue cheese olives and a dash of tobasco, sounds weird, was amazing. Appetizers--the baked scallops and the smoked trout, both delicious. Mains--Campfire Trout and Seafood Papardelle (a special). The pasta had multiple lobster claws, tail, and crabmeat. I died and went to heaven. For dessert we had grasshopper pie, and carrot cake for my hubby's birthday. Both very tasty! The decor is very cozy, like I want to come back on a brisk fall day and eat all the delicious food. Our waitress was so adorable. Knew when to check in, had a fun sense of humor, and was all around lovely. Will keep this in mind and return when we're back in the Lake Placid area!! read more

Great meal at the hungry trout. The food was quite good. Highlights were the scallops coquille, lemon caper trout and venison chops. All were fresh, tasty and very well prepared. Our server Meagan was a 10 -- super friendly and accommodating. Chef Brad stopped by our table which was a nice touch and throwback to a bygone era when chefs would touch tables and make their presence more felt. Really great service. What a gem. Beautiful location on the Ausable River. Literally felt like we were in an immersive experience with the overlook view of the brook aside the restaurant. The house rainbow trout in grand marnier butter was impeccable. Our wait staff Megan was charming and authentic. Brad, our chef, visited our table and made sure we were more than satisfied with the 18 oz ribeye steak. The decor is charming and there is a night time view of the river that is lit up. The food is spectacular, so inventive and different than anywhere we have eaten in quite a while. I wasn't impressed by this place. We made a reservation over the phone a few hours before we were to arrive in Lake placid. They were able to accommodate us and we were told we would have a table with a view. When we arrived they sat us on the side of the restaurant with a view of the stream, we couldn't see the Mountain View, but it was still pretty. This place is pretty expensive for the quality of food. I wasn't entirely impressed with any of the dishes. We got the escargot and smoked trout as appetizers. The escargot was my favorite, I liked the presentation of it and it was yummy! Wasn't a fan on the smoked trout. I didn't like the flavor. For my dinner I got the campfire trout. I didn't think it was tasty. It came with risotto and vegetables. I would give the food a 2/5, and that's being nice. He got the duck and he liked it! The staff was nothing to rave about either. With so many other restaurants in the area, I wouldn't go back here. read more

This place is great! I've been here a few times. On my most recent visit, I ordered the fish and chips. I also tried the pretzel. Both of these were yummy. I came here for dinner with friends on a busy weekend. We were seated as soon as we arrived on the outside deck. The view of Whiteface was gorgeous and I was so glad that we had such a great view. Our pretzel came quickly. It was served hot and fresh. It was gone pretty quickly. But, between four people, it was big enough to share. I ordered the fish and chips. My favorite meal to order when I go out. The portion of fish was plentiful. And the fries were seasoned perfectly. They were yummy and flavorful. I would definitely order this entree, again. I'll be back again the next time I'm in the area for sure. read more

Overall 3.1 I'm must say overall a good experience with great ambiance. Were able to score reservations at the last minute. I wouldn't say we had high expectations but were pleasantly surprised. Two servers taking care of the entire floor and were quite busy. Still we didn't wait for anything and were served our courses promptly. We ordered a very nice bottle of Zenato Valpolicella Ripassa which ended up pairing well with everything. Starter course was the venison and wild boar stuffed mushrooms. The cheese took over the flavor profile completely. Second course wedge salad and lobster bisque. The salad was just fine crisp cold lettuce and accoutrements. Lobster bisque was like a double serving very large. Very rich and decadent bisque with an elegant velvety smooth finish. Main course J had the Roasted Trout with Lemon-Caper Butter. The skin was soggy and burnt and trout was overcooked. The flavor was lacking and underdeveloped sauce really didn't marry with the fish at all. The rice was cooked well but bland unless stirred in with sauce. Still not a horrible dish just not executed well. My steak and seafood trio was an decent try at a surf and turf. Filet was in two 3oz pieces (my judgement on size) I ordered med rare and it came out med well. Seafood was cooked well with some shrimp and chunks of lobster, served over mashed potatoes with a gravy / Demi glaze of sorts. The potatoes and lost lettuce Didn't pair well. Flavor and sauce was good. Overall the food was priced appropriately and not bad and not epic. I would go back and give them another shot. One thing I enjoyed was the wood burning fire in the entry way provided that smoky winter feel but wasn't facing the dining area which would have been too warm. read more

Tricia was a great waiter, very professional & informative on the menu! Recommended the special of the day which I am beyond words! The special was Rainbow Trout with a lobster sauce and shrimp , absolutely so mouth watering and delicious, I'm so glad I picked this off the menu. Even the dish presentation was a fish plate! Atmosphere was very romantic! Wine selection is great too, I paired it off with the brotherhood wine (a sweet cherry flavored wine). The house old fashioned complimented the meal as well! We loved our dinner at the Hungry Trout Restaurant during a recent Adirondacks vacation in the Lake Placid area! A word of encouragement -- call and call to secure a reservation. We didn't know they took reservations, and couldn't get thru by phone, so we count ourselves very lucky to get a table by showing up right when they opened. GREAT service, absolutely delicious trout, and an unbeatable view! We got the Pan Fried Trout and the Campfire Trout and shared them both -- superb! Started with cocktails -- a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned (there was something special about it -- vanilla-scented bourbon, maybe?) and both were GREAT! Had the lobster roll at the Hungry Trout, it was terrible. There was about two ounces of lobster with lots of filler served on a huge steak roll stuffed with large hot house tomatoes. Additionally, the lobster tasted a little off. We mentioned our dissatisfaction to the waitress and she took notes which she gave to the chef. The chef did nothing, he never talked to us or offered to adjust the bill. The lobster roll cost twenty eight dollars and I wouldn't feed it to my cat. read more

Last night we (and several others) showed up for 5pm reservations. It was dark and empty. There was no one at the restaurant. No one on property. No sign on the door. We've enjoyed The Hungry Trout in past years and took company there for dinner recently. it was not the same. We sat downstairs, in the tavern, which has lost much of its cozy ambiance. Two of us ordered from the main menu (trout and mushroom ravioli) and both were very good. The other three dishes were from the tavern menu and were not good at all. Chicken fingers and fish and chips were significantly overcooked and a chicken sandwich was undercooked and inedible. We left disappointed, unfortunately. read more

I want to give a shout-out and a big thank you to The Hungry Trout Restaurant in Wilmington, NY for making my viewing of the solar eclipse such a once in a lifetime event. The Trout offered a great brunch with a varied menu of breakfast and lunch dishes and desserts. Not only was the food delicious, but it was accompanied by a very attentive and friendly staff. The view of Little Whiteface Mountain and the stream below couldn't be beat. To top it off guests were invited to stay on the resort property to view the eclipse. All in all a wonderful day. Enjoy a spectacular view while you dine on trout prepared six different ways with friendly, fast service. There are other seafood & steak options but the trout is the highlight of the menu. Not a lot of choices in this area for dining, but this place is worth stopping in for a nice meal. The bacon wrapped scalloped, smoked trout & pork belly appetizers were delicious. If you are near Lake Placid, and you do not eat here, you are eating at some place not worth writing about. The Hungry Trout in Wilmington is one of the best American restaurants we've ever visited. Totally professional in every way. The menu features fresh trout from the Ausable River, which is 50 yards away. Many other items for people who do not like trout (?). Beautiful indoor and outdoor seating. A separate Pub downstairs. Great views of the mountains and Ausable River. It could not be nicer. read more
