We always have such a great time at this restaurant, we've probably been at least six times. Every time we visit the Adirondack we want to come back. It's not that the food is spectacular per se (it is very very good and sometimes spectacular), but the ambience of the old house is welcoming and comfortable. The staff are top-notch and go out of the way to make you have a lovely time. The specials are fun and there are constants like the Hungarian mushroom soup and hunters chicken are always such a delight. This was my first time visiting since I had to go gluten-free, and I was delighted to find tons of options, including a gluten-free flatbread. So once again this year we went to the Ausable Inn from Rochester, specifically for my birthday dinner and we ended up again eating lunch there the day before. and all the many times we've been going we have never once been even close to being disappointed about anything. I had scallops that were to die for. And for dinner I had shrimp cocktail that was absolutely amazing and cold and fresh and the cocktail sauce was delicious. This casual small-town inn has been consistently good for a number of years now. I love the chicken salad, smoked trout, potato wedges, and of course, their wonderfully good mushroom soup! Do get reservations for dinner in the summer months or you'll likely be turned away. Stopped in to look at a place visited many years ago. The place is casual, rustic, clean and very homey. The service was inviting and cordial, the drinks generous and food was delicious, both lunch and dinner. We sat at the bar where the bartender was friendly and the local crowd was welcoming. Extensive menu, delicious food, great service and good prices, what's not to like? Not sure why this doesn't get better reviews. We started with an appetizer special of duck wings, which had a melt in your mouth flavor. I enjoyed the bison burger and my wife, the chicken avocado salad. Both were excellent. We love this place and eat here more than any other place in the Adirondacks. The food is consistently good. I always get an order of boneless hot buffalo wings and there are few places where I have had better ones. The Hungarian mushroom soup is fantastic. The burgers are great. However, the service is consistently slow. On this last visit, it was absurdly slow and the only waitress moved as if she were in a slow-motion dream. We were eating outside on the front porch and when we needed drink refills we would go in bar to get them ourselves because she was so freaking slow! Can these guys not fix this? This is my favorite place to stay in the area. The staff is always friendly and the food is great. They have rooms for rent above the restaurant available as well. It makes a great location to stage hiking, skiing, biking, or climbing adventures. They have a beautiful gas fireplace to warm yourself after winter adventures. The kitchen serves up great food and always has a lot of daily specials. A full bar and many microbrew draft beers are on tap to wet your whistle. The kitchen closes at 8pm so be sure to get there early to enjoy the food! Pizza night on Friday nights is also a great attraction for everyone! We ordered the homemade Alfredo with grilled shrimp and the peppercorn steak au poivre. The Alfredo was awesome and the shrimp were a Lg/Xl size, it came with 4. Came here for some food after a 3 day backpacking trip in the ADK. We were craving burgers and they had beer on tap and outdoor seating. Burgers were good, hand cut frys were great. Prices were a little steep. $5 for tap beer, $10 for a burger. Service was decent and the food was really good, but we were essentially ravenous. I had the burger with port mushrooms and onions. The Ausable Inn is our favorite after hike destination. Many excellent post hike experiences here. The time I ripped off my filthy hiking boots and slipped into my hot pink patent leather heels and strutted in for shots of tequila at the bar; the time I pulled in from the trail in my convertible, music blasting to discover my subwoofer smoking from the trunk; the time we devoured beer, burgers and fries on the deck after conquering three high peaks in a row (and then couldn't walk to the car after our meal); the time we splurged on big entrees and dined casually by the fire. We love the Ausable. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside remembering. While I would agree with others that we, too, have sometimes experienced slow and somewhat "cool" service....it hasn't been significant enough to warrant no longer patronizing the Inn. This place is cozy, serves delicious meals and best of all...the other guests are usually hikers who can be heard talking about their latest achievements. We always end up chatting up others and sharing trail tales. To me, nothing is better after the challenge of the mountains than chilling on the deck with some spirits and making new friends while awaiting the delivery of a steak or juicy burger. Ok so FIRST off we were not allowed to sit outside, which was a bummer. SECOND off our waitress was clearly not good at their job and also she got my order wrong. The food was tasteless, fries burnt, and the pulled pork was "pork chunks". Then the waitress' husband came in and kneeled in front of her next to our table and proceeded to preform PDA. I felt uncomfortable and even dirty. Also he rides a scooter. The bloody bathroom was almost an inch full of water. They were out of motz sticks which was sad. Therefore, we had a horrific dining experience and we never recommend eating here. read more

My wife and I went here on a 'date-night' recently and since we were slightly staggered by the menu prices, we chose a couple of burgers, onion rings and micr0 brew beers and sat out on the deck to eat. The food was just wonderful: cooked to order just perfectly and everything was home made and rich-tasting. We enjoyed the atmosphere on the deck and the view of the mountains while we ate. As long as you have $20 to $30 for each person with you, you can have a fantastic meal here in a classic Adirondack atmosphere complete with knotty-pine interior and the old weigh-scale they used to use for the annual 'biggest buck' contest that the old "Spread Eagle Inn" (it's former name when my family owned it) used to have each years through the 1970's. After a long day of hiking, climbing, and cliff jumping I needed food right away and let's face it your options are limited in Keene Valley so the Ausable Inn it was. The restaurant like most places in the area has a ton of character and has been around forever. I looked at the menu for only a second or two before I knew exactly what I wanted which was the Yellow Fin Tuna with balsamic vinegar reduction and I had it cooked rare. This entree like all entrees at the inn came with bread and a dinner salad. Both the bread and dinner salad were very unimpressive. The salad could have used a lot more vegetables and the bread was tough possibly because it wasn't fresh. My entree came out and unfortunately like many other places you order tuna it was very over cooked. It wasn't horrible and the sauce on top of it was very good, but the fish was cooked somewhere in between med rare and medium which is very far from rare. I did however love the fresh vegetables which they substitute for my potato free of charge. The waitress was also extremely nice and helpful. One other unfortunate side note was we chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful day and the temperature was still reasonable. This ended up being an awful idea. The bugs were relentless on the desk and we eventually had to move back inside. By no means a bad meal, but I felt there was plenty they could improve on. read more

Be aware the fries are extra and are the same price if want the chips or not, the beers are watered down. By far the worst meal I've had in a long time. Service was mediocre at best. I am an avid hiker and tourist to the Keene Valley and Lake Placid area, and I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant business. I have counted at least 5 different occasions in a row that this place has turned my party and I away stating that they were to busy. I have called ahead of time to make reservations and they have said they do not take reservations. I have walked in and asked to be served and they have told me outright that they are a reservation only business. The people working there need to get there stories straight. They are lying to customers and are one of the most unprofessional businesses I have every been to. I have even walked in when there are plenty of tables available and been refused service. I will never give this restaurant another dime, and neither should you! To bad that this is a black eye on a small community up there that thrives on out of towners bringing money into the area. I will continue to go to Noonmark diner instead of them! read more

I've stayed here many times on my way to becoming an ADK 46er. Proximity to all major trails is excellent. It's not the 4 Seasons, but then if that's what you're looking for, don't go to the Adirondacks. What I love about the place is that it has a personality that matches the surrounding mountains and trails. It's like being in an outpost in the middle of the woods with all the amenities you'd never have - Showers, excellent food and a bar!! I've eaten here a couple times and it was just ok. I go here because it's close to where I hike. Many times we get out of our hike late and they won't accommodate us even 1 minute after 9. Fair enough. Tonight we get there at 8:30pm and they tell us they can't serve us. They say they have become reservation only on busy weekends. Meanwhile they have an empty table but say more people are coming in. So 20 minutes later we pass by again. The table is still empty and even more people have left. They basically had no interest in serving us or accommodating us in any way and went on to start recommending other restaurants. Apparently they are so successful they don't need or want your business so I suggest you don't waste your time with these arrogant snobs. I forgot to mention to them that I'm an event host for a hiking group of over 10,000 people and myself and others run trips to the area throughout the year. I'm going to spread the good word to all my hiking friends. Thanks for nothing and keep your mediocre food and poor attitudes! read more
