There was construction going on the whole time which is not very relaxing and not kid friendly.
    Brock L.

The campsite was not bad but we were told that we would have full hook ups and didn't. It's not a big deal for a few nights but with two kids and staying for 5 nights not ideal. The only day the construction stoped was on the Fourth of July. They charge you to dump waste water upon arriving. I have never seen that before and I have started at many sites.

Poor customer service at the front desk

I wish I could give a zero star review! It started out so nice here. I was able to book for 3 nights, cost me almost $500. Very nice for how secluded the site was. I really enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were not very good, smelled bad, but manageable. On checkout day, I stopped in and asked if we could checkout later. They said no problem at all, no one is here, which is true, there were empty camp sites everywhere. So we did our cave excursion , someone in our party got a head injury, we came back to the site l, started packing up, and I had someone call me to say if we weren't gone in less than 10 minutes we would be charged. We were treated so poorly! I told them I had stopped in and asked if we could stay a little longer and then for it to turn into such a terrible last few minutes where they acted like we were taking advantage was just so disgusting. We won't be back. There are soooo many nicer campsites for a 1/3 of the price with so many more amenities! The KOAs in the area are way nicer. Also this place is known as Heritage Trails or American Buffalo "Resort" and they are next to bear country. They may have to change their name regularly due to the poor reviews.

    American Buffalo Resort space X-18.

I can't say enough about our stay at American Buffalo!! We scored the best spot in the place (X-18). Huge concrete space with a very large concrete patio, table, chairs, fire pit and BBQ. It's an end spot overlooking a pine forest. We will definitely come back! Just beautiful!!!

The restrooms and showers at Black Elk Resort are beautiful, very clean and much larger than the shower in our Van so we used them nightly! They also have a laundry room. Bring your quarters. Mt Rushmore, Custer state Park, Crazy Horse etc. There is a beautiful covered patio area with BBQ's you can use & a nightly camp fire. Also, a bar, which we didn't frequent. Reality, we were disappointed from the moment we pulled in. The grass was NOT green like the pictures. I realize it was end of season, but, it was 90°! Why not water the lawn? We stayed in the front of the park, right next to the main road. Loud!! Not happy. The website pictures certainly don't show that! Our sights were so slanted, we had to use all of our blocks to jack up our trailer so we were level. Not happy. The water was BROWN! We had to use our water filter & run the water for quite awhile before it was semi clear. Needless to say, we bought bottled water for cooking & drinking. The water was ok for a few days, then almost zero water pressure for showers. By the last day, the water turned disgustingly brown again. Our water filter had turned from clear white to dark brown. Wish I could post a picture of it. We would never stay there again, due to these issues. Just want people to be aware, websites are not what they appear to be.

My top reason for booking here was for it's location being in the heart of downtown Rapid City, but also because of how nice it looked. I thought I was being bamboozled when I saw it was only $86 a night to book! I knew nothing prior to our stay that it was 'haunted' until seeing a section of the gift shop dedicated to American Horror Story, which prompted my Google search. The hotel definitely feels vintage but no weird occurrences, but maybe the ghosts here are just chill. ;) There is so much nearby that we were able to walk to, like restaurants, a barcade and even a comic book store. There is plenty of street parking as well as a parking garage across the street. We got lucky with a corner room and I felt like it was pretty spacious for the price. Not to mention great views of the Black Hills! Great choice of a place to stay when visiting Rapid City!

This is a nice enough historic hotel right in the middle of Rapid City…read more I stayed for 3 nights with my family. We had a one bedroom suite. The suite was very small, barely bigger than the king bed in the bedroom and the sofabed in the living room. The bathroom was pretty tiny, not big enough for 4 towels without hanging them on random doorknobs. There was no door between the two rooms. We arrived around 5PM, and our room was not ready yet. We were given two $15 vouchers for Starbucks to be used the next day only for the inconvenience. That was nice. When I made the reservation, I noted that there would be 4 of us in the room. When we got to the room, there were only 2 towels in the room, and there were no pillows for the sofabed. Also, the sofabed was brand new, and so the moving straps had not been removed, and the sofabed could not be opened. I had to call down to the front desk to bring scissors to open up the sofabed and to bring up more towels and pillows. The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were not great. The bathroom, as mentioned, was small with very little counter or shelf space. The shower/bath combo was cramped with a cloth curtain. Water pressure was not great, and even on the hottest setting, the water wasn't very warm and was very susceptible to getting colder. We were in town to visit the nearby sites, so we were out of the room most of the days. Imagine my surprise after returning that no housekeeping came after our first night. That was weird. After our second night, the housekeeper had come and made up the bedroom but not the living room (sofabed not made). She (she left a card with her name, Melaney) took the towels and again left only two clean towels. She did not take out the trash in any room. I was exhausted after a full day of driving and sightseeing, and the last thing I wanted to do was call down to the front desk to ask for two more towels and fresh sheets for the sofabed. It was very frustrating. Parking. The hotel itself only offers valet parking. There is a lot of street parking, and it is only $1/hour from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, $0.50/hour from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. There's an app, so you can remember your space # and pay from your phone in the morning. The location really is wonderful, and there are neat historical things about the hotel. The kids loved looking at all the pictures and the stuffed bison heads. The staff was friendly, even if the hotel wasn't run particularly well.

So my husband and son stayed here at Big Sky Lodge two years ago on their guys' trip out West and…read morewere pleased enough with the accommodations to book it for our current week long stay in Rapid City. Now, I'm a bit of an admitted hotel snob, but my husband & I have been married over 25 years and he knows my limits and flexibility. He assured me the place was clean enough for my standards. We are Disney timeshare holders (DVC) and also patronize Airbnbs where we can. Otherwise I generally prefer at least a 3 star, Hampton Inn/Hilton Garden experience at a bare minimum. Sorry not sorry. This place is NOT that. It seems that since my husband's stay in 2018, and even since he booked our reservation earlier this year, ownership of the lodge has changed hands. While I'm appreciative that new ownership and the changes it brings, especially in this new normal of COVID, the service we have received this week has been dismal. I wasn't exactly impressed with the exterior when we arrived - the place is pretty 'vintage'. We were informed that there would be no routine room services performed due to COVID, and we found that we had had to repeatedly ask for things like towels, toilet paper and trash bags. This morning we specifically asked to have the room serviced since we've been here 4 nights now, yet we just returned from being out all day to freshly made beds, and nothing else. No towel restocking, no trash was emptied, no other cleaning, no supplies (hand soaps, in-room coffee supplies, etc) nothing. In my opinion this is pretty abysmal and completely out of the norm for a service industry. If a guest requests a room to be serviced, the staff should, at a minimum, prepare that room to a new guest-ready/turnover level. I was willing to overlook all the other stuff but today's experience was just a nudge too far. Who in the service industry goes into a room and ignores 3 trash cans that need to be emptied? Dead bug in the sink? We have 1 washcloth for 3 people. Nothing was vacuumed or wiped down and nothing restocked. We got a decent rate on this stay, but not good enough that I'm porting my own trash out on the regular and going to Walmart to buy toilet paper. This isn't a timeshare or Airbnb stay where more autonomy is expected on the guests' part. The hot tub is closed, which again, in the age of COVID is a no-brainer, but the area looks janky with a bunch of large rocks on the spa's lid. The front office hours are hit or miss and the 'breakfast offerings' are meager as well, with a few danishes and what looks like whatever yogurt cups were purchased the night before. No rhyme, reason, or standards. Interactions with staff have not been especially friendly or outgoing, odd behavior for a family-owned and run service-industry business. We have 3 more nights here and future return trips to Rapid City will be booked elsewhere. 2 stars because the view of Rapid City from up here is nice. Otherwise 1.

Even offering a tour to show off the property (which included a hot tub overlooking said fantastic view) and additional amenities (laundry, ice machine, breakfast nook etc). The room is a little small, but I cant imagine anyone spending a ton of time here (not sleeping) with so many things to do. We found it the perfect size for the two of us and our dog. Speaking of, this place is dog friendly, with an additional fee. Great grassy area (please be respectful owners, so this place continues to allow dogs) to play in. Not a lot of sidewalks on this part of town, so the grassy space was much appreciated. Not sure if I would get thr chance to stay here again, but I would book again for sure.

There is wifi accessible and our room came with a tv that included access to a variety of apps, including Netflix. We were fortunate enough to bunk in a family suite and it is perfectly suited for a group of people that are looking for a home-away-from-home feel. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and open-concept kitchen and living area, it really felt like we had our own apartment here. The kitchen and bathrooms are thoughtfully stocked with travel-sized toiletries and condiments, and there are plenty of dishes and cookware to utilize. There would be no need to worry about cooking in the morning, however, because breakfast is prepared and delicious! Every morning was plenty to fill me up for hours, and the variety and quality of food was really exceptional. It is served at a communal table, so everyone at the lodge eats together.
